I plan to make an appearance.

(There's also the 1960s section of any Oscar list. See unofficial challenge.)

I plan on watching a few, not 100+ or anything like that...something modest like 15-25.

Yes, but only the episodes that originally aired in the 60s.

I am likely to inadvertently watch movies from the 60's regardless, so I suppose I'll participate subconsciously.

Tried, couldn't stand:
It's a mad mad mad mad world (1963) - suffered through the first hour. Among other things, guess I don't find greed funny these days.

to recuperate:
1. At last the 1948 show (UK 67, eps 1-2) - proto-Python w Chapman & Cleese, also Marty Feldman. 8 eps on Amazon Prime in US.

If I ever stopped films in the middle, this would have been the one I stopped. Likely the worst movie viewing experience in my life (at least the worst not connected to any personal trauma).

Oh, and my approach to this challenge is about the same as weirdboy's. I'll probably spend some effort on the other two February challenges and I'm sure some of those will fall in this decade.

I'm somewhat similar. I'm working on list rankings at the moment, and since most lists have films from the 1960s on them, I'll focus on those.

And since I'm already here...

1. To Kill a Mockingbird (1962) [rewatch]

I said more in the African American challenge thread, but I couldn't think of a better way to start off that challenge...

This is US-based only, but if anyone finds these useful, I can pretty easily generate similar links for nearly every streaming platform. Here is a list of everything from the 1960s streaming on:

Filmstruck: https://trakt.tv/search//?watchnow=film ... =1960-1969

1. The Commissar / Komissar (Aleksandr Askoldov, 1967) 8/10
Sensitive film with great camera work and symbolism inspired by classical Russian School (Koulechov and co), mocking official propaganda and condemning all forms of discriminations.

6. Mizu de kakareta monogatari (1965) - 8/10

Not quite the surreal experience I was led to believe, but after Rengoku eroica it's probably a good thing.

7. L'armata Brancaleone (1966) - 6.5/10

The Holy Grail before The Holy Grail, unfortunately it dragged on a bit after the first hour and at the end I was just glad it was over.

8. Kaidan (1964) - 8.5/10

Visual masterpiece, if I didn't know better and someone told me it was made in the 80s I would probably believe it.

Starting out faster than I thought, but I will slow down as I start watching very long (3+ hours) films on my watchlist:

01. The Diamond Arm (1969) - 5/10
02. Ivan's Childhood (1962) - 8/10
03. Divorce Italian Style (1961) - 7/10
04. Skin, Skin (1966) - 6/10
05. The Eve of Ivan Kupalo (1969) - 6/10

1. The Servant (Joseph Losey, 1963) 8/10
Dragged a little bit at the end, but I loved the power dynamics in this movie. Great screenplay from Harold Pinter.

2. Easy Rider (Dennsi Hopper, 1969) 9/10

3. L'avventura (Michelangelo Antonioni, 1960) not sure/10

4. Kes (Ken Loach, 1969) 5/10
what an ending

2. Viridiana (1961)

Beautifully shot, but just couldn't get into it. I just don't think I react well to the provoking Bunuel does.

3. The Manchurian Candidate (1962) <-- Gold on AFI 100 Thrills list

Loved this one - I was enthralled right from the get-go. Hilarious to me how Angela Lansbury is only 3 years older than the actor playing her son (she definitely stole the show). But I loved how this was set up, shot, acted, and paced. And scarily relevant politically at the time, shortly thereafter, and today.

9. Vecher nakanune Ivana Kupala (1969) - 7/10

Thought I was going to get something similar to Natvris Khe, instead I found myself in a completely psychedelic experience I never would have expected from a story set in a tiny Eastern European village.

10. La ragazza con la pistola (1968) - 7.5/10
Wasn't expecting much from this one other than some Monica Vitti eye candy, in a way that's what I got but this could have actually been a favourite if it wasn't so uneven (seems to be a feature for Monicelli films?).

The first 30 minutes are some of the most hilariously bizarre I've seen. Having remembered Monica Vitti most fondly for her sombre characters in Antonioni's works, it's a nice surprise to see her pull off a character who is so totally bonkers. The second half of the film slows down quite a bit, and does just enough to maintain my interest.

11. La ragazza con la valigia (1961) - 6/10

This was the Girl with a ____ I thought I would like, but I found it quite disappointing.

No prob! I'm amazed at Amazon Prime, actually - lots of crap films on there, but they have quite a few underappreciated gems from the past, and more than any of the other common platforms.

This challenge can motivate me to watch some stuff I've been wanting to for ages. :turned:

I decided to start with a Pasolini film, because I'd only seen one before yesterday and that's way too low for such an important director.

1. Teorema (1968, Pier Paolo Pasolini)
But...sorry, ye cinema gods, I don't think this is a good film. It offered zero emotional or intellectual stimulation; on the contrary it found it pretty empty and eye-roll inducing, a slog to get through. Weirdly, though, it hasn't put me off exploring more from Triple P. At the very least I definitely like his technical approach, so I'll try again and see if I find something that clicks (the other I've seen, The Gospel According to Matthew, was also a bit disappointing but I liked it more than this).

2. Kill, Baby... Kill! / Operazione paura (Mario Bava, 1966) 5+/10
I guess this is revered as the birth of giallo. Apart from a few good shots, it looks too much like a mediocre B-movie for my taste.

Image

3. The Intruder (Roger Corman, 1962) 8-/10
The manipulation story is confusing a bit the anti-segregation message I thought but Old South setting and performances are very convincing.

Image

4. Cloportes / La métamorphose des cloportes (Pierre Granier-Deferre, 1965) 6/10
Typical French crime comedy from the 60s with sharp dialogues. Lacks pace and originality though.
