Heh. I didn't want to have to break it to you that you're slightly behind your 150 watches/challenge pace... :whistling:
Well, next month is animation month, one of my two favorite challenges of the year (next to horror). So we'll see how that one goes. ;)

Always Bet on BlackShow
1. The Symbol of the Unconquered (Oscar Micheaux, 1920)
2. Super Fly (Gordon Parks Jr., 1972)

3. SHORTS: a-d are froom the Pioneers of African-American Cinema set - I'm taking the timings from the set as IMDb's aren't correct on b & c
a) Two Knights of Vaudeville (unknown, 1915) 11 m
b) Mercy, the Mummy Mumbled (R.W. Phillips, 1918) 13 m
c) A Reckless Rover (C.N. David, 1918) 14 m
d) The Films of Oscar Micheaux (no director listed, 2016) 9 m
e) St. Louis Blues (Dudley Murphy, 1929) 16m

total run time 63 minutes

4. Velvet Smooth (Michael Fink, 1976)

Spike Lee double feature

5. Summer of Sam (Spike Lee, 1999)
6. She's Gotta Have It (Spike Lee, 1984) (re-watch)

7. Women in Cages (Gerardo de Leon, 1971)
8. The Cool World (Shirley Clarke, 1963)
9. Nothing But a Man (Michael Roemer, 1964)
10. Lilies of the Field (Ralph Nelson, 1963)
11. Friday (F. Gary Gray, 1995)
12. Next Friday (Steve Carr, 2000)
13. The Split (Gordon Flemyng, 1968)
14. Independent Lens: Birth of a Movement (Bestor Cram/Susan Gray, 2017)
15. Girl 6 (Spike Lee, 1996) (re-watch)
16. Richard Pryor: Live in Concert (Jeff Margolis, 1979)
Three ambitious films and one piece of schlock to close out this great challenge...reviews to follow tomorrow if anyone cares...

17. Dear White People (Justin Simien, 2014)

I guess the best way to describe this is that it's a somewhat satirical comedy that gradually turns into deeply political agitprop; or maybe the agitprop was in hiding even in the first scenes? Writer-director Simien bites off more than he or maybe anyone can chew in the space of an under-2-hour film: interracial relationships, racial relationships at a fictional Ivy League school, careerism, political activism threatening scholastic career, queerness, a blackface frat party, legacy students, the donor class, racism (or non-racism) in the Age of Obama...it's full of ideas and themes and unfortunately ends up a bit of a mess, but an always entertaining mess which does at times prove thought-provoking for sure. Tessa Thompson is the standout here IMO as the impassioned, activist host of the radio show that gives the film it's name, but the rest of the cast is solid as well. I suspect I might like this more coming to it again at some point.

18. Black Panther (Ryan Coogler, 2018)

Well, count me as one of the few people on this forum who really loved this. I get the comparisons to other superhero films as far as plot structure and to some extent the origin story, but this had a better cast of characters than any other Marvel film so far, the action didn't overburden the rest of the film as it does in most of them (especially the Avengers flicks), and there really is some thought-provoking material here about the place of an advanced country and people in a world that may not be ready for them - or may destroy them. I might write up more on this later or might not, certainly it's getting plenty of press already. Standout elements for me are the lovely cinematography and the performances by Michael B. Jordan and Andy Serkis as the primary villains and Letitia Wright as Shuri, one of the more bad-ass science nerds you'll ever see. In reflecting on it over the last day I'm more conscious of the flaws, many inherent in just about all mega-budget action films, but I guess this hit me at the right moment and in the right way yesterday, so fuck it. Best superhero film since The Rocketeer at least and maybe since Superman.

19. Jungle Fever (Spike Lee, 1991)) (re-watch)

I continue to be impressed more and more with Spike's early work on re-watching it; while this one doesn't really go up in my estimation in this first viewing since it was new (I saw it twice in the cinema), it doesn't go down either and it was already at a pretty high level. It has one significant flaw that hasn't gone away, which is the over-saturation of the music - this is a film that really needs a few more quiet moments to breathe. Is this something about the sound of New York I wonder? Because the other two directors most associated with NYC, Martin Scorsese and Woody Allen, sometimes get a little carried away with too much music as well - certainly all three have been highly musically focused as filmmakers throughout their careers. Anyway it's more problematic in Lee's work, though this is the only case I can think of where I feel it materially harms the film - there are at least a couple of dialogue scenes where the music gets in the way of being able to focus on the (important) words. But it ultimately isn't a big enough problem to keep this from remaining pretty top-tier for this director, with an excellent cast and a host of ideas at play, most of them worked out fairly well if, as in Do the Right Thing, without clear resolutions. But then Spike is smart enough to know that there aren't easy answers. Cast is pretty great as usual but certainly Samuel L. Jackson's junkie is the standout, to my mind his career-best performance and probably my favorite acting performance in an American film from the year; how he didn't at least get nominated for the major American acting awards is beyond me - he did win at Cannes, so there's something, and given the career he's had since I think it's probably safe to say it helped him out.

20. Super Fly T.N.T. (Ron O'Neal, 1973)

Extremely mediocre, dull sequel that features no sex and little action, I think this is supposed to be some kind of political statement about South Africa and African nations throwing off their white oppressors in general, and given that star Ron O'Neal co-wrote the story and directed I'd guess it was something of a passion project for him. Alas it spends most of it's time in talk and a very boring and too-long poker game and not enough in the African portion, the climax of the whole thing. O'Neal gets some cool threads to wear and the music's good, but that's about it.

Hello Maxwell!

I didn't go wild but I did sneak in 24 titles in celebration of black American cinema. Plenty of new favourites and I enjoyed this challenge ever so much. Some breathtaking and beautiful discoveries ranging from the considered, nuanced observations of James Baldwin to Cicely Tyson journeying back to Bountiful and many others in between such as Julie Dash, 'Jammin' the Blues' and the spirituality of Spencer Williams' 1941 opus. Really quite an awesome month!

Hope it's alright if I detail my viewings by way of an IMDb list. My totals were 9 features and 227 minutes of shorts for a score of 12 points: https://www.imdb.com/list/ls023758325/.

A wonderful challenge! I echo beatnik's sentiments and very much hope it returns next year.

That'll be all, thanks for hosting Max, it has been a great month of challenges, and this one was great, a lot of discoveries, and it gave me a look into american society that's not often seen from over here, i felt a lot of similarities between the struggles of black americans and the struggles of the third world

Managed to watch one movie for this challenge yesterday.

1. Boyz n the Hood (1991) - 7/10

I liked the part where they were kids best. The rest was quite predictable.

1. Selma (2014) - 8.6
2. Do the Right Thing (1989) - 7.8
3. The Exile (1931) - 5.8
4. 12 Years a Slave (2013) - 8.2
5. Precious (2009) - 8.4
6. Black Panther (2018) - 8.0
7. Ashes and Embers (1982) - 6ish

This was the hardest challenge of the month, but I still managed to exceed my goal of 5. Crosses off mainly important or prestigious films, plus got to catch BP in theatres. On the surface, it's not African American (taking place in Wakanda, mostly), but it definitely lives and breathes it and the African American experience colours the film, so I'm including it in my list.

37. Putney Swope (1969)

Interesting movie - the beginning was hilarious, with everyone voting to elect Putney Swope chairman of the board because everyone thought no one else would. And the commercials they produced were awesome.

38. The Symbol of the Unconquered (1920)

This was a story about early racism within the Black community, between lighter skinned people and darker skinned people. Plus an early take on the clan. Interesting watch.

39. Klansville USA (2015)

And this was a PBS documentary of how the clan grew and got to become a huge powerhouse in North Carolina, then its downfall. I turned this on because I used to live in NC. It was generally informative, but nothing all that special.

40. Lavell Crawford: Can a Brother Get Some Love (2011)

Funnier than I thought he's be - I mostly know of him as Landslide in an episode of IASIP, and he made me laugh quite a few times.

41a. The Mayor: The Pitch (2017)
41b. The Mayor: Death of a Councilman (2017)

The moral of this series is that if you put wholesome Black people (and Lea Michelle) in a boring series, no one will watch it. It was good this one got cancelled.

41c. Two Knights of Vaudeville (1915)
41d. Mercy, the Mummy Mumbled (1918)

These were a couple early shorts available on Netflix - interesting takes, and I especially liked the Mummy one.

42. United Shades of America: Kamau Buys a Gun (2017)

This one seemed timely, and I felt the need to end the month on the ultimate answer to life the universe and everything. Kamau talks about gun laws and actually buys a gun in CA (which is interesting, because the more stringent gun laws in CA came about because Black Panthers bought a bunch of guns, and the conservatives passed gun laws restricting open carry, etc. Signed into law by Ronald Reagan, no less). And then Kamau attending a "owning a gun while Black" lesson, which is a heartbreakingly necessary thing to do.

Final Stats and Challenge Update

Users
Through the month of February, we've had 28 participants in the African-American Cinema Challenge, and I'm thrilled with that turnout. psychotronicbeatnik led from the start, amassing 62 watches and earning the challenge victory. India Istanbul had some Good Times in second place, with 45 total watches. maxwelldeux finished in 3rd place with the ultimate answer to life, the universe, and everything, 42 watches. Eve-Lang-El-Coup, Mate_cosido, sebby, and OldAle1 round out the 20-watch club, with 36, 28, 25, and 20 watches, respectively.

Leader board is up-to-date and maintained in the first post.

Years
Films watched so far have ranged from 1914 to 2018, covering 83 unique years in film. The 1970s were full of Good Times, and several of us hung out on The Corner in the 2000s. Here's a list of watch count by decade:

Thanks again for doing a fine job of hosting Maxwell - your intro inspired me to change my planned watchlist and made this one of my favorite challenges I've participated in - here or on other movie boards. That just makes coming in first alol the sweeter - yeah, baby!

A special shout out to India - who inspired me to watch some Good Times even before she started binging on them. It's definitely a show worth checking out and I plan to finish out the first season later this year.

 to all my fellow celebrators of African American Cinema. Let's do it Again!
