1.Rio Quarenta Graus - 5/10 I think this Brazilian movie is pretty overrated.
2. São Paulo, Sociedade Anônima (1965) 6/ 10 - Brazil
3. O Quatrilho/Quartet 6/10 - Brazil - a totally sufficient film about 2 married couples living together.
4. Naufragio 1978 - Mexico - kind of a straightforward story that I could relate to part of the time. Interesting ending, especially considering it came out before Kubrick’s The Shining.

Not bad, but it feels Bunuel could have made so much better... Some behaviours are too abrupt and hard to believe.

12. Nieve negra (Martin Hodara, 2017, Arg) Typical mystery thriller type film where son returns to the rural home after father died to face his family history.
13. Melaza (Carlos Lechuga, 2012, Cub) A struggle to make ends meet in a small Cuban village.
14. Os Fuzis (Ruy Guerra, 1964, Bra)
15. Vil romance (José Celestino Campusano, 2008, Arg) Only fitting to finish the month with a film by the director I started this month with; gay romance in "Campusano-land", no happy endings here of course.

Sorry to see people respond so negatively to films like La Mujer Sin Cabeza, and Lavoura Arcacia (even Y Tu Mama Tambien).

They are not "easy" films, but in my opinion two of the more outstanding ones this century (both are in my top 50-100).

One thing that is probably true is that only a small audience can appreciate either of them, no matter how available they are, and their "popularity" (and consumer rating) will probably decrease rather increase as more people see them if only because the vast majority of movie watchers are looking for and expecting something else from a movie

I had been meaning to focus on this challenge but I found myself drawn to the African American one as February progressed. I ended up only watching four films for this one in the end. Oh, well, tough to keep across three concurrent celebrations.

1. 'Pobre mi madre querida' / 1948, Homero Manzi, Ralph Pappier / Argentina / 7/10 / FTV
2. 'Viagem aos Seios de Duília' / 1965, Carlos Hugo Christensen / Brazil / 10/10 / RV
3. 'Gueros' / 2014, Alonso Ruizpalacios / Mexico / 8/10 / FTV
4. 'Desierto' / 2015, Jonás Cuarón / Mexico/France / 6 or 6.5/10 / FTV

1. Los tallo amargos [Bitter Stems] (1956 ARG) - 7.2
2. La diosa arrodillada [The Kneeling Goddess] (1947 MEX) - 7.0
3. Yanco (1961 MEX) - 5.6 - also '60s challenge
4. Crepúsculo [Twilight] (1945 MEX) - 7.0
5. En la palma de tu mano [In the Palm of Your Hand] (1951 MEX) - 7.4
6. 25 Watts (2001 URU) - 5.6
7. Soy Cuba (1964 CUB) - 4.8 also '60s challenge

The local film club was hosting a noir month, so they screened a bunch of older underseen Latin noirs, which was interesting.

Saw 7 films for each challenge this month, unintentionally.

My last post was my final total (20 points). I would have liked to have seen more and delved into more countries as well, but my main focus was on the African American challenge. It was interesting to see so many Mexican films from the 60s in such a short time period (all but two of my 20 were from the 60s and all were from Mexico).

Thanks for hosting clemmetarey, and a big "Olé" to all my fellow competitors.

Thanks for hosting, clemmetarey ! I didn't see enough films, but still, this gave me the incentive to watch a few films I've had on my watchlist for some time.
I especially enjoyed Gavaldon's Macario, so I'll try and look for more films from that director. Some will be screened next month at the French Cinematheque in restored condition (the cycle is named "Mexican film noir"), and I will make that a priority.
