2018's Close, But No Cigar Awards

This award is for those brave souls who fought the good fight, but ultimately fell just short of the victory, landing in second place for an official challenge.

Almost congratulations to weirdboy for finishing in 2nd place in the Forum Lists Challenge, earning a first second and Level 1 of this prestigious award.

Almost congratulations to jeroeno for finishing in 2nd place in the Canadian Challenge, earning a second second and Level 2 of this prestigious award.

Almost congratulations to flavo5000 for finishing in 2nd place in the Documentary Challenge, earning a fifth second and Level 5 of this prestigious award.

But who are the best losers this year? Congrats to psychotronicbeatnik for finishing 2nd in 6 challenges this year! 72allinncallme and flavo5000 are the best losers at losing, both tying for second place here with 5 2nd place finishes this year. jdidaco is right behind with 4 2nd place finishes. :worship: flavo :worship: - both for this and leading the first place award for the year. There were many months when he or someone else was too far in the lead to catch but 2nd place looked very doable. This was a fun award to win - I'm not even sure why, but I came to value my 2nd place finishes as much as my first place ones. Would I have been obsessed with them without Max's hard work with this award? Doubtful.

 to all the 2nd placers!

 EDIT: Flavo is so awesome that I got confused about which awards he actually swept - When I started replying to this I thought I was on the Adrian Monk 100 viewings plus one, but even so, :worship: flavo! Mistakes like this show why I really deserve this 2nd place trophy (and why I would make a lousy host).

9 had 1000 or more
1 had 2000 or more

last year with 12 challenges less we only had
1 with 1000 or more

I think the board have gone crazy

By the way. Last year there were 112 participants in challenges. This year: 113. Progress!

Oh those are cool. I'm going to bet we have fewer with 1000+ watches, since we've made triples harder. But your side challenge might argue against that. To be determined...

Although I did go crazy this last year in terms of how many films I usually watch, my 2190 Challenge film viewings was actually only 1228 films Hulked out thanks to Doubles & Triples. Still crazy but not nearly as crazy as actually watching over 2000 films would be. I've been in the 900s once or twice but never gone over 1000 films watched in a year before. And I blame it all on Maxwell!

EDIT: The number I am actually proud of is my 4.17 average in all my challenge rankings for the year.

Well done Maxwell

So I came in second place on the leaderboard, second in the Close, But No Cigar, Hostess with the Mostess and Winners Only award

And all that without a single ‘Obsessed Much?’ award? :circle:

I should change my moniker to 2allinncallme.

Thanks for running this maxwell, it definitely caused me to participate way more than I used to in challenges. I think I'm all challenged out, though, so I'm going to take it easy in 2019. One thing I noticed is that I avoided long films and watched a lot of short features (40-80 minutes) in order to fit in more views for the challenges.

Despite doing really well this last month, I just missed out on my 12/12 goal. That was the hardest one for me to keep track of, as I always thought I was doing better than I actually was. :D

Level 36 is the maximum possible award, and no one has achieved that level. psychotronicbeatnik Led this challenge award pretty much from start to finish, ending the year at Level 30, the highest level achieved by anyone. sol and 72allinncallme round out the top three, finishing at Level 26 and Level 25, respectively.

For this final X/X post, I'm going to table everyone so that we can see the distribution of levels and note who got a promotion this month.

Rank Person Level Promotion?
1 psychotronicbeatnik 30 promotion
2 sol 26 promotion

Surprised by close I came to beating jdidaco in the end. I guess my goal this year is to surpass him given that I have already achieved the "beat maxwelldeux" milestone.

Same. I recorded 910 viewings in the Word document that I keep - which is far more than for any other year since I started formally keeping track (2010) but also far less than the 1282 points would suggest.

Maxwell,

Thanks again for doing these - it was a big motivator. Will you continue to maintain the overall standings? It hasn't been updated since Nov. 6 and I would love to see how i fared through the end of the year.

Let's see: challenge awards wrap-up, hosting a January challenge, going over 100 watches for docos - it's not like you've been slacking....
