2018 Challenge Series and Awards

Welcome to the 2018 Official Challenge Series!

This is a fun and friendly competition based on the official challenges for 2018. Everyone is encouraged to participate as much (or as little) as they wish. We'll have an overall challenge competition for this year, as well as several awards you can earn along the way based on your participation in challenges. The overarching goal of this is to have fun and encourage everyone to expand their film knowledge by participating in the various country/genre/theme challenges.

How Does It Work?

Very simply, earn points by participating in challenges. Points are based on your rank for the challenge, and totaled across all challenges you've participated in. (Full details of the scoring can be found in the Official Challenges Leaderboard.) In addition, there will be various awards you can earn along the way for achieving certain milestones. Other advice:
  • Record your watches that fit each challenge, even if it's only 1 or 2
  • Scoring tends to reward breadth; 5 watches each in 3 challenges tends to be better than 15 watches in a single challenge
  • Pay attention to films that count for multiple challenges
  • Most importantly, HAVE FUN!
Awards

Yes - there will be awards! Awards are based on participation in the challenges this year and achieving various milestones along the way. Just keep participating in challenges, and it's likely you'll earn quite a few of these along the way. Here are the awards:
  • Participation (AKA the "Christopher Lee") Award: How many challenges did you participate in? Awarded in six levels, for participating in 1, 4, 9, 16, 25, and 36 challenges.
  • X/X (AKA the "Beautiful Mind") Award: Awarded for watching X movies in X official challenges. There are 36 potential levels with this badge. Every challenge participant will earn at least the 1/1 level. But if you want to earn the highest level, you'd have to watch at least 36 movies in all 36 official challenges.
  • Winners Only (AKA the "Charlie Sheen") Award: For winning a challenge. Level up each time you win a challenge. (Max 36)
  • Close, But No Cigar (AKA the "Alfred Hitchcock Oscars") Award: For earning second place in a challenge. Level up each time you come in second. (Max 36; will not be awarded if there is a tie for the win)
  • Obsessed Much? (AKA the "Adrian Monk") Award: For reaching the 100 watch milestone in a challenge. Level up each time you watch 100 films for a challenge. (Max 36)
  • 300 (AKA "Gerard Butler Yells A Lot") Award: Awarded once for reaching 300 total watches across all official challenges.
  • Dabbler (AKA "Eric Roberts") Award: Awarded once for participating in at least three challenges of each type (country/genre/them).
  • Marco Polo (AKA "Nellie Bly") Award: For participating in all 12 country challenges (awarded once at end of year).
  • Think Inside the Box (AKA "The Expendables") Award: For participating in all 12 genre challenges (awarded once at end of year).
  • So You Think You Can Theme (AKA "I Can't Think of a Decent Film Pun for This") Award: For participating in all 12 theme challenges (awarded once at end of year).

Well, I want to tease this thread and try and get this back in the forum's collective (un)consciousness, since we're just about a week away from me being able to post the first awards of the year. Remember, there's still plenty of time to jump in and participate in the three official challenges going on.

So without further ado, here's a teaser of some results from last year:

2017's Close, But No Cigar Awards

Image

This award is for those brave souls who fought the good fight, but ultimately fell just short of the victory.

Congratulations to flavo5000 for earning four 2nd place finishes in 2017! Honorable mentions to 72allinncallme, albajos, jdidaco, and weirdboy for coming in second place twice each.

Full results under the spoiler.

The first month of the year is now in the past, and all of the January challenges have been finalized. This means we get our first month of results! psychotronicbeatnik has jumped out to a nice lead with strong participation in all three official challenges in January. In all, we had great participation in January, with 47 people participating in at least one of the official challenges. For the 2018 Official Challenge Leaderboard, the top 10 are below; full results can be found in the first post.

2018's Participation Awards

Image

This award is for those who have participated in a wide variety of challenges. It is awarded in six levels, for participating in 1, 4, 9, 16, 25, and 36 challenges.

This month everyone who participated in at least one official challenge has earned Level 1 of this award (all 47 of us). This will get a lot more interested next month when we've had enough challenges to get us to the second level...

Thanks for doing this, Max. I don't really understand the ratings, but that's OK - algorithms are a mystery to me
Spoiler: click to toggleShow
but I once wrote a poem trying to replicate one of Bartok's "Bulgarian rhythm" pieces.

2018's X/X Awards

Image

This award is for those people who have watched X movies for X official challenges. The first level is easy to obtain - every challenge participant will have watched at least 1 film for 1 official challenge. But each subsequent level is harder to achieve - Level Two is 2 films in each of 2 official challenges, Level Three is 3 films in each of 3 official challenges, Level Ten is 10 films watched in each of 10 official challenges, and so on.

This month, everyone who participated in at least one official challenge has earned at least Level 1 of this award. And with three official challenges in January, the maximum level that can be attained is Level 3 - so congrats to all thirteen people who watched at least 3 films for all three official challenges: 72allinncallme, cinephage, Fergenaprido, hurluberlu, jdidaco, jeroeno, Mate_cosido, mathiasa, maxwelldeux, OldAle1, psychotronicbeatnik, RogerTheMovieManiac88, sol

2018's Obsessed Much? Awards

Image

This award is for those slightly obsessive people who manage to watch 100 films for a single challenge.

Five different people reached the 100 watch milestone in the Sci-Fi/Fantasy challenge: flavo5000, jdidaco, Gorro, Eve-Lang-El-Coup, and psychotronicbeatnik. And due to some strategic film choices, flavo5000 also managed to reach that milestone in the Low IMDB challenge, earning Level 2 in the first month.

2018's 300 Awards

Image

This award is for those who have tallied 300 total watches across all official challenges. That's 25 watches/month, with three challenges each month. And with strategic film choices that count for multiple challenges, the number of films required to reach this milestone can be greatly reduced.

I really didn't expect anyone to get close this month, but I got surprised. Congrats to flavo5000 who racked up 308 watches across two challenges in January for becoming the first to earn this prestigious award! With strategic film choices that often counted for both the Sci-Fi/Fantasy and Low IMDB challenges, flavo5000 managed to earn this award wicked fast. :circle:

So these awards are going to get a lot more interesting next month, once there's a bit more to report on. But in the meantime, I wanted to ask if y'all had any feedback to make these more interesting/fun. I'm open to suggestions, so let me know. :)

The second month of the year is now in the past, and all of the February challenges have been finalized. In all, we've had great participation this year so far, with 61 people participating in at least one of the official challenges. For the 2018 Official Challenge Leaderboard, the top 10 are below; full results can be found in the first post.

I knew February was going to hurt my standings. Far too busy at work; dozens of films lined up that I simply couldn't make time for. I hope March will be a more productive month for me, but I guess slipping from 5th to 9th spot is not that bad.

This is my personal favorite award. It's already starting to get hard to achieve some of those higher levels, and it's only going to get more interesting as the months go on. Here is a list of everyone with an award promotion this month:

Level 6 - Congrats to all the participants who have watched at least 6 films in all 6 official challenges: jdidaco, jeroeno, Mate_cosido, maxwelldeux, OldAle1, psychotronicbeatnik

Level 5 - Congrats to all the participants who have watched at least 5 films in each of 5 official challenges: 3eyes, 72allinncallme, Fergenaprido, hurluberlu, RogerTheMovieManiac88, sol

Level 4 - Congrats to all the participants who have watched at least 4 films in each of 4 official challenges: cinephage, Eve-Lang-El-Coup, Gorro, sebby, Simba63, VincentPrice

Level 3 - Congrats to all the participants who have watched at least 3 films in each of 3 official challenges: allisoncm, ChrisReynolds, flaiky, flavo5000, frbrown, India Istanbul, Ivan0716, nimimerkillinen, vortexsurfer, weirdboy

Level 2 - Congrats to all the participants who have watched at least 2 films in each of 2 official challenges: 45MinuteZoom, connordenney, Lilarcor, lynchs, peeptoad, RBG

Level 1 - Congrats to all the new participants who have watched at least 1 film for an official challenge: cinewest, clemmetarey, edward5, funkybusiness, max-scl, micmacs, morrison-dylan-fan, Nopros, sacmersault, sortile9io, Straka, tommy_leazaq

20 is my goal this year, and anything beyond that is gravy. I already had 8 last month with the Latin America challenge, so I'm going to be at least a level behind starting next month.

2018's Close, But No Cigar Awards

Image

This award is for those brave souls who fought the good fight, but ultimately fell just short of the victory, landing in second place for an official challenge.

I'm not precisely sure how I did this, but I seem to have missed the post of this award for January. So for now, I'll highlight all the second place finishers from both January and February.

Almost congratulations to 72allinncallme for finishing in 2nd place twice in the official challenges, being the first person to earn Level 2 of this prestigious award.

Almost congratulations also to the other four people with their second place finishes, earning Level 1: India Istanbul, jdidaco, Mate_cosido, psychotronicbeatnik

If you've participated in 6 challenges thus far, but are only level 5, then level 5 is the highest you can achieve. You're final level will be the lowest of two numbers: the number of challenges you participate in OR the smallest number of points that you won in an individual challenge.

Unless I'm misunderstanding how this works, neither of you will get the level 20 award if you had 8 & 6 as your lowest counts in previous challenges.

My goal is to remain at Level 5. I managed to see 5 low-rating films, so I should be able to manage 5 films in all other categories for the remaining challenges.

Yeah - there's still 30 challenges that haven't closed, so if anyone got at least 30 watches in each of those, they'd end up at level 30.

I am proud to have achieved this award with only 192 actual watches which expanded to 334 films watched for challenges thanks to doubles and triples. I especially love watching triples!

Thanks again for compiling all these stats, Maxwell, they are a fun addition to the challenges here.

Yeah - there's still 30 challenges that haven't closed, so if anyone got at least 30 watches in each of those, they'd end up at level 30.
Right, but only if they hadn't participated in the first 6 challenges.

Example:

Challenge 1 - skip
Challenge 2 - 7 films
Challenge 3 - 20 films
Challenge 4 - 20 films
...
Challenge 33 - 20 films
Challenge 34 - 20 films
Challenge 35 - 40 films
Challenge 36 - 100 films

This person would only qualify for level 7, correct?

Correct, but so is this example.

Challenge 1 - 1 film
Challenge 2 - 3 films
Challenge 3 - 10 films
Challenge 4 - 10 films
Challenge 5 - 10 films
Challenge 6 - 99 films
...

Challenge 30 - 10 films
Challenge 31 - 10 films
Challenge 32 - 10 films
Challenge 33 - 10 films
Challenge 34 - 10 films
Challenge 35 - 10 films
Challenge 36 - 10 films
= level 10.

It doesn’t matter if you have challenges with fewer watches Fergen.

If challenge 4 through 33 are all 20 films each, that would be level 20.

Oh, okay. I understand now. It only takes into account the number of challenges that meet that particular level's criteria, not the total number of challenges you participate in. That wasn't clear to me before. Thanks for explaining :)

In that case, I'm going to aim for Level 10.

Thanks as always for these detailed stats. Nice to rise up one spot this month, although -- even with an extra 65.5 points under my belt -- I am nowhere near close to any of the seven participants above me. I guess the challenge now is to try to enter the coveted top seven. The Easter holidays has certainly helped, but yeah, I don't have as much free time as many others here do.

I don't usually go for many challenges on here, but I must admit I'm getting more and more excited about them this year with all of the extended incentives and hoopla. Went from 18 to 11 this month, but the top ten seem to be a big step above me. As a lover of stats this goes straight to my heart (l) so thanks for all of the data max.

Glad you all like these stats. I find them really fun, and I use this as a way to work on my Excel skills. But it's also really good to hear other people like looking at them!

This is my personal favorite award. It's already starting to get hard to achieve some of those higher levels (only three people are at the top level), and it's only going to get more interesting as the months go on. Here is a list of everyone with an award promotion this month:

Level 9 - Congrats to all the participants who have watched at least 9 films in all 9 official challenges: jdidaco, OldAle1, psychotronicbeatnik

Level 8 - Congrats to all the participants who have watched at least 8 films in each of 8 official challenges: 72allinncallme, jeroeno, Mate_cosido, maxwelldeux

Level 7 - Congrats to all the participants who have watched at least 7 films in each of 7 official challenges: 3eyes, Fergenaprido, RogerTheMovieManiac88, sol

Level 6 - Congrats to all the participants who have watched at least 6 films in each of 6 official challenges: hurluberlu

Level 5 - Congrats to all the participants who have watched at least 5 films in each of 5 official challenges: cinephage, flavo5000, Gorro, Ivan0716, sebby, Simba63, vortexsurfer, weirdboy

Level 4 - Congrats to all the participants who have watched at least 4 films in each of 4 official challenges: allisoncm, ChrisReynolds, flaiky, frbrown, India Istanbul, nimimerkillinen

Level 3 - Congrats to all the participants who have watched at least 3 films in each of 3 official challenges: 45MinuteZoom, clemmetarey, funkybusiness, klaus78, Mochard, ororama, peeptoad, RBG

Level 2 - Congrats to all the participants who have watched at least 2 films in each of 2 official challenges: edward5, Nopros, Straka, tommy_leazaq

Level 1 - Congrats to all the new participants who have watched at least 1 film for an official challenge: brokenface, Daviddoes, globetrotter, Knaldskalle, Nathan Treadway, St. Gloede
