1. Crocodile Dundee II (1988) - 5.8 - silly sequel
2. Crocodile Dundee III (2001) - also low imdb rating - 5.4 - thoughtless threequel
3. Dad and Dave Come to Town (1938) - 6.6 - harmless silly comedy that doesn't quite work but isn't all that bad
4. Lousy Little Sixpence (1983) - 7.4 - interesting documentary that flaiky? dug up online.
5. The Odd Angry Shot (1979) - 7.6 - I've never seen MASH, but "Australian version of MASH" does sound about right. You definitely need to enjoy black humour to get through this one. Not quite a comedy, though, as my friend found out the hard way
6. Black Harvest (1992) - 7.6 - fascinating doc, would like to see the rest of the trilogy. A window into a world I know nothing about. The very existence of tribal warfare with spear and bows and arrows (and guns) in the 1990s among people who are exposed to the modern world will never cease to fascinate me.
7. Heavenly Creatures (1994) - 7.8 - My first Jackson film set outside Middle Earth. Kate and Melanie are brilliant in this; I was amazed to find out it was their first roles.
8. Ten Canoes (2006) - 8.2 - this has been on my watchlist for years; I had a copy and then lost it, but now I have a much better version, and I'm glad I got to see it that way because it's visually stunning. The storytelling is great too, and it moves along at just the right pace.
9. Broken Barrier (1952) - 5.6 - boring love story that's only really notable for the fact that it actually tackled a biracial romance in the '50s. And the male lead is the Baron from the first Harry Potter movie.

Forgot that one:

10. Mad Max (George Miller, 1979) [Rewatch] 6/10 (=)
PShow
1. Once Were Warriors (Lee Tamahori, 1994, New Zealand) 5+/10
Although the film gives an interesting perspective on social issues in NZ, I found the characterization of the father and his "metis" friends too heavyhanded by opposition to the Maori people and culture we are, not too convincingly, shown as the solution of all problems.

Image

2. Animal Kingdom (David Michôd, 2010, Australia) 7+/10
Very solid crime family drama.

Image

3. Crocodile Dundee (Peter Faiman, 1986, Australia) 7-/10
Despite the clichés, cheesy lines and predictable plot, still a nice little 80s candy.

Image

4. The Monkey's Mask (Samantha Lang, 2000, Australia) 4/10
A kind of Australian, lesbian Basic Instinct. It's hard to believe in the lesbian couple involving Kelly McGillis though, which makes the numerous sex scenes rather cringeworthy. There is also some insipid poetry imposed by various characters all along. The director keeps digressing before coming up with a very predictable conclusion.

Image

5. Red Hill (Patrick Hughes, 2010, Australia) 5-/10
Another caricatural film where an escaped convict with aboriginal origins takes revenge from the local red necks and sheriff. In the middle, a young virtuous cop and a panther (yeah). Lot of meaningless and improbable action.

Image

6. Looking for Alibrandi (Kate Woods, 2000, Australia) 6/10
The relationship between three generations of women is the most interesting part, for the rest it is the usual hich school teenage movie played by actors well in their 20s.

7. Bad Boy Bubby (Rolf de Heer, 1993, Australia) 6+/10
Feels more Dutch/NW European than Australian. Has a lot in common with Bernie (1996) for the trashy humor, too many scenes with shock value for me to enjoy this fully.

Image

8. Crocodile Dundee 2 (John Cornell, 1988, Australia) 5-/10
Unnecessary sequel that seems to have been made from all the deleted scenes of the first.

Image

9. The Man from Snowy River (George Miller, 1982, Australia) 6-/10
Family-friendly horse drama.

I checked out the Hawaiian shorts, and they definitely seem focused on native Hawaiian culture, so I'm OK with including them.

Nice. I really liked all three but my favourite was perhaps the magical yet very simple 'High Rider' from Bradley Tangonan. A girl skates to work and observes the idiosyncracies of the world as she passes by. A very pleasant and imaginative little piece that slows things down and conveys a sense of affinity and fantasy.

I was very pleased to see these three from Hawaii!
That's all, folks!

Final Aus/NZ/Oceania Stats and Challenge Update

Users
The 2018 Aus/NZ/Oceania Challenge is now closed; we've had 25 participants in the challenge, covering 445 watches (471 with shorts/episodes). Simba63 pretty much dominated throughout the challenge, amassing 91 watches, including a staggering 82 watches on the official Australia list. 72allinncallme, Mate_cosido, and sol rounded out the 40-watch club, with 59, 46, and 45 watches, respectively.

It has been years since we've run a similar challenge on this forum (which happened twice in the past), but we had more participants during this challenge than during the other two combined. Kudos to everyone who joined in!

Leader board is up-to-date and finalized in the first post.

Australia List Progress
All stats in this section include rewatches
Across all films watched for this challenge, Simba63 rocked it by watching 84% of the films on the official Australia list during this month. 72allinncallme, sol, allisoncm, Mate_cosido, and maxwelldeux all hit at least 10% of the official list as well. These stats are also maintained in the first post.

But how did we do as a group? Across all the watches from everyone who participated in this challenge, here are our stats:
  • First time around: We collectively watched all 100 films on the official Australia list once.
  • Second time around: We collectively earned a silver, watching 78 of the 100 films at least twice.
  • Third time around: We hit 39/100 films three or more times.
Years
Films watched in this challenge have ranged from 1906 to 2017, covering 64 unique years in film. 1982 has been the most popular single year with 17 watches, followed closely by 1984 and1978 with 16 watches each. Here's a list of watch count by decade (including shorts/episodes):
