7. Bad Boy Bubby (Rolf de Heer, 1993, Australia) 6+/10
Feels more Dutch/NW European than Australian. Has a lot in common with Bernie (1996) for the trashy humor, too many scenes with shock value for me to enjoy this fully.

Image

8. Crocodile Dundee 2 (John Cornell, 1988, Australia) 5-/10
Unnecessary sequel that seems to have been made from all the deleted scenes of the first.

Image

9. The Man from Snowy Riverk (George Miller, 1982, Australia) 6-/10
Family-friendly horse drama.

Image
Spoiler: click to toggleShow
1. Once Were Warriors (Lee Tamahori, 1994, New Zealand) 5+/10
Although the film gives an interesting perspective on social issues in NZ, I found the characterization of the father and his "metis" friends too heavyhanded by opposition to the Maori people and culture we are, not too convincingly, shown as the solution of all problems.

Image

2. Animal Kingdom (David Michôd, 2010, Australia) 7+/10
Very solid crime family drama.

Image

3. Crocodile Dundee (Peter Faiman, 1986, Australia) 7-/10
Despite the clichés, cheesy lines and predictable plot, still a nice little 80s candy.

Image

4. The Monkey's Mask (Samantha Lang, 2000, Australia) 4/10
A kind of Australian, lesbian Basic Instinct. It's hard to believe in the lesbian couple involving Kelly McGillis though, which makes the numerous sex scenes rather cringeworthy. There is also some insipid poetry imposed by various characters all along. The director keeps digressing before coming up with a very predictable conclusion.

Image

5. Red Hill (Patrick Hughes, 2010, Australia) 5-/10
Another caricatural film where an escaped convict with aboriginal origins takes revenge from the local red necks and sheriff. In the middle, a young virtuous cop and a panther (yeah). Lot of meaningless and improbable action.

Image

6. Looking for Alibrandi (Kate Woods, 2000, Australia) 6/10
The relationship between three generations of women is the most interesting part, for the rest it is the usual hich school teenage movie played by actors well in their 20s.

3. Meet the Feebles (Peter Jackson, 1989, New Zealand) Noticed that a lot of people were watching this, but did any of them really enjoy it? Peter Jackson has come a long way from such silly nonsense

Noah Taylor actually outshines Geoffrey Rush here (no pun intended) and has more screen time than him if anything, but it is a decent enough performance and it is not too surprising that he won an Oscar for it even if he was not the best of the nominees by far. What is surprising those is all of the film's other awards circuit successes. The whole structure of the film, focusing on just the events before and after his breakdown (and not the breakdown itself) is not particularly helpful and while some moments made me smile, this is hardly the most inspirational movie out there.

1. Caddie 6/10 Official Australia list
2. On Our Selection (1932) 4/10 Official Australia list
3. Praise 6/10 Official Australia list
4. Spotswood 7.3/10 Official Australia list - Great performance by Anthony Hopkins! He really knocks it out of the ballpark, especially toward the end. Once particular speech I watched 3x just because it was so good.
5. Stone 2/10 Official Australia list - If you’re into Easy Rider rip-offs, this one’s for you.
6. They're a Weird Mob 5.7/10 Official Australia list- pretty cheesy for Michael Powell, but not horrible.
7. Death in Brunswick 7/10 Official Australia list - Unexpected to find a dark comedy on this list with Sam Neill. Well, it was pretty funny! LOL.
8. Annie's Coming Out (1984) 7/10 Official Australia list - A very sweet and charming movie that reminded me of The Miracle Worker.
9. Looking for Alibrandi (2000) 7/10 Official Australia list - sweet coming of age story about the daughter of Italian immigrants in Australia.
10. The Club (1980) 6/10 Official Australia list - not into sports movies usually, but it got more interesting as it progressed and they focused on the characters.
11. The Devil's Playground 5.5/10 Official Australia list - not my favorite movie about priests/children/etc.
12. Cunnamulla (2000) 5.5/10 Official Australia list - An okay film about people in the Australian Outback. Not ultra-compelling, but okay.
13. Dogs in Space (1986) 3/10 Official Australia list - a film about aimless punks, not really likable
14. Eureka Stockade (1949) 5.2 Official Australia list - Pretty boring and dry.
15. The Shiralee (1957) 7/10 Official Australia list - Pretty touching, especially near the end.

With allison's 2/10 for the film and hardly exciting scores from others, I had very limited expectations with this film, which always helps. It is a little on the meandering side, indulging in nude beach swims, card games and chit chat scenes, but it has a pretty decent central dynamic, with its police officer protagonist coming to really like the lifestyle of the bikers who he is sent to infiltrate. I didn't see the ending coming either, which is always a plus too.

I've always considered it American, personally. But when I looked at it, it is a US-NZ coproduction, and the director is from NZ and has made several films there. It's kinda borderline, but I think you can count it.

12. Strictly Ballroom (1992)

Watched this with the wife, and we had opposite reactions to it. She was bored - I was fascinated. The over-the-top drama of the dance teachers was hilarious - and I loved those mockumentary stylings used in there. The costuming and colors used in the film were pretty impressive, even if the dancing was less-than-stellar. I had a lot of fun watching this.

Stats will come later tonight, but just a quick preview:

We are collectively at 95/100 on the Official Australia List! We just need the following 5 films:
- Bliss (1985)
- Goodbye Paradise (1983)
- The Lighthorsemen (1987)
- Little Fish (2005)
- We of the Never Never (1982)

Goodbye Paradise - recently dusted off my ex-rental VHS of the film. Will definitely be watching this one by the end of the week. :)

The Lighthorsemen - own it on Blu-ray and while I haven't ever seen it, it frankly looks a little boring. I guess I'll watch it before the 31st though if nobody else does.

We of the Never Never - also own it Blu-ray. I've seen it before, quite recently, but it's one of our country's best films, so I suppose I could rewatch it.

Bliss - own on DVD and again have already seen it, but it's been quite a few years, so I suppose a revisit might be in order.

Little Fish - could buy this on a DVD over here for a mere $6.98 if I wanted to. Can't say it really looks that interesting, but again, I *could* see it.

Through the 3rd week of January, we've had 21 participants in the Oceania Challenge. Simba63 has a pretty commanding lead with 69 watches. 72allinncallme is coming in 2nd place with 41 watches. Mate_cosido and sol round out the top four with 31 and 29 watches, respectively.

Leader board is up-to-date and maintained in the first post.

Countries
In what might be the least shocking stats I've presented (still), Australia is dominant, with 254/310 watches coming from there. Thanks still to jvv, we have more countries that aren't named either Australia or New Zealand. Here's an alphabetical listing of countries and their respective watch counts:

Characteristically solid Rolf de Heer movie about one man's passion for music that he links to a single childhood experience in which a French musician accidentally landed in his outback town when on tour. The scenes of his meeting the musician later in life have a real warmth to them with lots of wisdom passed on in the form of music.

13. Dinosaur Island (2014)

A three-for movie. While it was not as bad as I had expected, it wasn't all that great. The highlight of the film was when they referred to my home state as the "butt fungus capital of the world." 3/10, which might be a bit generous.

A difficult film to assess because it ends so much weaker than it begins. Still, the first two thirds here are offbeat and original enough that I would recommend the film overall. The focus is a highly flawed and hardly good-looking couple who struggle to sustain a relationship closer to traditional norms. There are some very funny moments involving the guy using mathematics to perfect his performance "in bed" (or the floorboards, since that's where they do it).

Message received loud and clear. I was saving Goodbye Paradise for a Jan 26 Australia Day viewing, but seeing that you're so desperate to hit Platinum as soon as possible, I'll bump it up to tonight's viewing. ;)

@Simba - if you're going to watch Bliss and The Lighthorsemen anyway, I won't bother (re)watching them myself. I don't need either film to achieve my goal of Silver on the Official AU list, and I really should concentrate more on the other challenges in these last few days of January.

I liked this a lot more than expected. Sure, the acting is not top notch, and from a technical viewpoint, the film has more historical significance than cinematic genius value, but the film tugs nicely into the nature versus nurture debate with lots of questions raised regarding the issues of raising Indigenous Australians as white... issues that still play into national debate today, what the Stolen Generation and all the fears these days about separating Indigenous children from even the utmost abusive of parents for fear of public outcry.
