9. Jeannette: The Childhood of Joan of Arc / Jeannette, l'enfance de Jeanne d'Arc (Bruno Dumont, 2017) [IMDB: 5.3/10]
Hit and miss but quite a cinematic experience . 7/10

THE END
the landfillShow
Image

1. Chelsea Walls (Ethan Hawke, 2001) [IMDB: 5.1/10]
I liked the broad gallery of characters and bohemian vibe. Hawke also rather does a good use of the DV camera while so many other movies of the early 2000s have become barely watchable. But after one hour all the mini-stories start to run in circle with really little being said. 6+/10

Image

2. The Sound and the Fury (James Franco, 2014) [IMDB: 4.8/10]
Franco killed his movie inflicting a shaky cam taking close shots of a mentally challenged, yelling character for the first 30 minutes, the rest isnt too bad. 5/10

Image

3. The Toilets were closed from the Inside / Les Vécés étaient fermés de l'Intérieur (Patrice Leconte, 1976) [IMDB: 5.3/10]
A parody of French 50s crime stories, Leconte's first film is lacking pace and the strong argument he had with the lead actor is somehow visible in his acting but it is nicely iconoclast with some funny moments and a colorful cast. 6-/10

4. The Girl on a Motorcycle (Jack Cardiff, 1968) [IMDB: 5.3/10]
Pure product of 1968... A young lady rides her motorcycle in black leather, visiting her lover and reflecting on life. The cinematography of Jack Cardiff and Marianne Faithful's are saving the film, all outdoor scenes and pyschedelic visions being quite nice to watch, while the script is unfortunately very dull. 6-/10

Image

5. The Monkey's Mask (Samantha Lang, 2000) [IMDB: 5.1/10]
A kind of Australian, lesbian Basic Instinct. It's hard to believe in the lesbian couple involving Kelly McGillis which makes the numerous sex scenes rather cringeworthy. There is also some inspid poetry imposed by various charaters all along. The director keeps digressing before coming up with a very predictable conclusion. Overall, a painful experience. 4/10

Image

6. Twixt (Francis Ford Coppola, 2011) [IMDB: 4.8/10]
Low budget and unambitious, yet entertaining to some degree. 6-/10

Image

7. The Demoniacs / Les Démoniaques (Jean Rollin, 1974) [IMDB: 5.4/10]
Wouldn't be a serious low rating challenge without a film of French master of erotico-horror Jean Rollin. Not one of his best, obviously, but like most, it is saved from total mediocrity by a few mesmerizing shots. 5+/10

Image

8. A Corner of Heaven / Tiantang jiaoluo (Miaoyan Zhang, 2014) [IMDB: 5.3/10]
Shouldn't stay long with that rating: great, experimenting b&w cinematography serving a bleak tale of modern China. 8-/10

138. Almost Human (2013) IMDB: 4.6
My Rating: 5
While not terrible, this Fire in the Sky meets Friday the 13th alien slasher is let down by some pretty bad acting in places. It does have some pretty good effects given the budget though.

Australian financed mystery thriller set in Norway and following a couple of American reporters trying to uncover a possible NATO conspiracy. While the film is not exactly tightly paced or brilliantly acted, it is moody and atmospheric when it counts and all the UFO conspiracy stuff is quite interesting. The low IMDb rating in this case seems really harsh.

This Kiwi horror film had me hooked from early on: neon-lit hospital where crazy lab rat experiments are going on, camerawork running with the characters and turning angular at pivotal points. The opening stretch though is far superior to everything after it. There are a whole bunch of weird and wacky supporting characters, but a little too much of a generic horny teens flick for my liking.

32. Funny Man (Sprackling, 1994) 4.7 on IMDb
A strange British take on a Nightmare on Elm Street supernatural slasher. It takes inspiration from Monty Python's surreal sketches, but it's really in the tradition of the working class stand ups of the seventies with its reliance on saucy humour, stereotypes and innuendo. This sort of humour would have been dated at the time of this movie's release but none of that would have mattered if it was funny. Unfortunately it's not. The bizarre kills and weirdness provide some interest but the lack of any plot means that the film wears out its welcome and becomes tiresome.

33. Phantoms (Chappelle, 1998) 5.4 on IMDb
The population of a town disappear and a group of people investigate, eventually finding out they're in a version of The Thing. Affleck's flat lead performance is one of the worst things about this movie. That, and the directing. Things pick up a lot when O'Toole appears and the monster attacks become more frequent.

34. Breathing Room (Suits-Cowan, 2008) 4.4 on IMDb
Battle Royale, but filmed in a single warehouse room. The quality of the visuals is horrible, it looks like it was filmed on a cheap camcorder. Anyway, people get killed off one by one while the script brings in twists to the rules that only muddy matters. Eventually the killer is revealed in an ending that is both predictable and lame.

I most likely first learned about this from RedLetterMedia, but I had the feeling before I watched it and a couple of times during it that I'd seen it before, perhaps at the b-movie fest I went to at Northwestern U in the 1980s? But would they have had such a new movie at the time? Anyway, this and the next film are on that 50 Sci Fi Classics box from Mill Creek that I mentioned many, many bad movies ago, and they were both among the more fun terrible films I saw. In this case there's a meteor or something that crashes to the earth in some hick part of...Maryland, I think? And a bunch of rednecks find the "monster" (guy in a green latex suit of course) and take him and exhibit him or something. But the "leader" is a drunken psychotic dude who fucks things up for everybody and there's lots of death and maiming to finish this off (though none of it very explicit). This actually ends up being something of a parable about racism and a critique of redneck culture, if you can believe it - at least it seemed so to me - but it's so ridiculously incompetent and cheap that the message isn't going to be noticed much. Or maybe I was just reaching. Richard Buxton as "Joe" the crazy redneck who most of the action centers around has to be seen to be believed, one of the great bad performances of all time. Rating, jeez, I dunno. 2 as a production, 10 for hilariousness.

70. The Astral Factor (John Florea/Gene Fowler Jr/Arthur C. Pierce, 1978) 3.7 on IMDb

A guy learns the mystic secrets of the East, matter transmission and ESP and psychokinesis and such, by studying books in the prison library where he's locked up for killing his mother, intending to break out and kill anybody who looks like her or who wronged him. At least I think that's basically it - the sound was poor and I may not be completely accurate. Doesn't matter, this is basically an excuse for us the viewer to look at hot babes of the era like Stefanie Powers and Elke Sommer in revealing clothes, and watch clueless cops bicker with each other. Some cool cars and LA scenery, not unwatchable but still in the end not good at all. 4 from this lascivious viewer.

71. Fire Maidens from Outer Space (Cy Roth, 1956) 2.1 on IMDb

Image

Cheesecake is also the attraction in this cheap British b/w production about an expedition to the hidden 13th moon of Jupiter which turns out to have an ancient Atlantean civilization, refugees from Earth thousands of years ago, all but one of them women. Of course they want to kill or hold the men, of course the planet is totally earthlike and everybody speaks English, and of course it's deeply sexist and stupid throughout. And there's an alien critter (not too different looking than THE GALAXY INVADER above who kills people sometimes. There are some amusing bits - the lead actor Anthony Dexter as the ship's commander seems to be aware that he's in a piece of crap and smiles or laughs or winks at strange places throughout the flick. It's worth a 3

72. Beast from Haunted Cave (Monte Hellman, 1959) 4.1 on IMDb

This cheapo film noir cum creature horror is Hellman's first film, with production credited to Gene Corman, Roger's younger brother. So you know it's good! So good they felt they didn't need to put a "the" in the title, I guess. Anyway like I say it mostly is a film noir, with a gang of thieves that have the brilliant idea to make a bank heist while blowing up a mine in Deadwood, SD, then escaping by ski over the mountains. All would be well except for the GIANT SPIDER that just inexplicably exists here and decides to track one of the men and kill everybody. The more noirish crime elements and some of the interactions between characters early on are actually decent, but the monster is one of the worst ever and the last third of this is just idiotic. Also 3.

35j. Sort of a Commercial for an Icebag (Hugo, 1970) [15 mins] 5.2 on IMDb
I thought it might be a parody while watching it, but looking it up it's a genuine artist with a weird obsession for making giant copies of household objects (ice bags in this case).

I don't particularly like it, but it has a rhythm, a pattern and it looks like it took genuine effort to make it, which is more than I can say for some of these experimental shorts...

And that's it for me. I love many of these flicks and could easily make this a two month long challenge. I hope it returns to the schedule next year. Thanks for hosting, sol. And  to all the other foolhardy turkey pluckers who participated. Congrats to Flavo for really gorging and to albajos for going so low!

LAST POST OF THE CHALLENGE, FOLKS!!

Image
140. Fantastic Four (2015) IMDB: 4.3
My Rating: 5.5
I feel like this one has gotten a little of a raw deal from the critics and nerds on the internet. A guy at work told me it was the worst superhero movie he'd ever seen. Off the top of my head and then started rattling off: Captain America (1978), Fantastic Four (1994), Daredevil, Elektra, Catwoman, Batman & Robin, Captain America (1990), etc. My point being, this is far from actively awful, settling into a very mediocre groove. The pacing is definitely off (and from what I've read it sounds like studio interference may be partially to blame there) taking forever to get to the meat of the movie. It reminded me of Ang Lee's Hulk in that respect which didn't get quite as much hate as this one did. It also had some hackneyed dialogue and some of the effects weren't good. BUT much of the acting was solid with a cast that was well above much of the material and Doom was a pretty cool villain for the 10 seconds he was in the movie. I think there's probably a pretty decent Fantastic Four movie buried in here, it's just not this.

Image
141. Monster High (1989) IMDB: 3.3
My Rating: 3
Like some kind of sub-Troma effort gone wrong, Monster High tries desperately to be funny and fails pretty consistently. The production values are terrible. The acting is bad. The story barely makes any sense. There's just not much reason to bother with this.

Image
142. Jupiter Ascending (2015) IMDB: 5.3
My Rating: 5
I remember a time when I was excited about a new Wachowskis movie but nowadays it almost feels like an obligatory chore. And its because of stuff like this. Despite the basic plot of a woman not realizing she's secretly royalty, forced into a world greater than what she ever thought possible (which is like the plot of over half of a YA novels), this movie tries to complicate the shit of things by throwing all kinds of random characters, archaic terminology and blustery action (oddly enough all traits of a certain kind of anime that annoys me too) in an effort to feel bigger than it really is. Also, somebody seriously needs to give Eddie Redmayne a throat lozenge.

AAAAANNNDDD on that note, I am done! It's been super fun watching all these crappy movies (sometimes anyway) and I've enjoyed the comments from you guys on all the crappy ones I've missed (I'm taking notes for next year possibly). Thanks to sol for hosting the challenge!

18. Sharknado 5: Global Swarming (2017) - 4.1

They stopped trying. That's the only explanation for this. Now they're just fighting sharks in tornadoes all over the world, but without any plot structure to get them there. It's absurd and not even fun.

19. Malibu High (1979) - 5.0

This was almost bad enough to be good. A timeless tale of the young woman who's failing at high school, so she decides to sleep with her teachers to get good grades. Then starts smoking pot because why not? Then starts hooking to make money. Then starts contract killing to get out of hooking. If my high school experience was 5% as intriguing as hers, I might consider going to a class reunion.

20. Cindy and Donna (1970) - 4.6

This is the soft-core-porniest of all the films I've seen for this challenge. I also want to be a fly on the wall when they pitch a shot-for-shot remake of this film today. "OK. We have this beautiful coming of age story. This 15yo girl (Cindy) observes her 17yo sister (Donna) drinking, smoking pot, and having a bunch of sex. So Cindy starts exploring her body and herself, spending oodles of time naked. Donna keeps exhibiting while behavior, also naked a lot. For a side story, we have a 17yo stripper who's sleeping with Cindy and Donna's father. Then, Cindy and her friend go to the beach and pick up some dudes, but Cindy is too nervous to actually have sex. But then they go home, and Cindy and her friend have a lesbian experience after getting high. Her friend convinces Cindy (remember, she's 15) to sleep with someone, so of course she chooses Donna's boyfriend. But wait - there's a twist ending that literally comes out of nowhere and makes zero sense."

5th viewing or so since ca 1986. I first saw this at a Northwestern University B-Movie Fest when I was a Junior or Senior there; saw it again at least once at b-fest, and probably once more in the cinema in the 90s and once on VHS. The prints Northwestern got usually weren't very good, and of course VHS... so it felt in some ways like this was a first viewing, on DVD courtesy of the lovely Image Wood box set. For the first time I could clearly see the strings holding up the "flying saucers" and see the fabric background in front of which Col. Edwards stands as he "made that decision". Criswell's narration is the greatest in the history of film. Hilarious as always, I'm fully with the Medveds and others on this one, the best bad b-movie ever. Rating 1. Or 10. Both.

74. Bride of the Monster (Edward D. Wood Jr., 1956) 4.1 on IMDb

2nd viewing I think. Also saw this long ago, perhaps at a b-fest; only remembered bits and pieces like the awful Harvey Dunn as the police captain, the rubber octopus of course, Lugosi's hypnotism, Tor. It's a little better than memory placed it, perhaps; the stock footage (apart from the gators) is less glaring than in Plan 9, there's little day-night-day problem, and the production looks a little less chintzy, perhaps because it's mostly just supposed to take place in an old house rather than an alien spacecraft. So on the whole it's a slightly better film, but also somewhat less funny. 2 on a "critical" scale.

75. The Sinister Urge (Edward D. Wood Jr., 1960) 2.4 on IMDb

Image

Probably the only "major" Wood film I hadn't seen, this alas isn't on the Wood box and I had to make do with a mediocre downloaded copy. It's an interesting film historically, at least to someone without a huge knowledge of the sexploitation or juvie subgenres of this era, both of which it falls into to some extent, though in it's last few minutes it's closer to straight (late) noir. A maniac is going around killing nubile young girls in a park, and it turns out he's connected to a porno production house that's run by femme fatale Gloria (Jean Fontaine) for "the syndicate", the same faceless mob I've seen in, oh, 1822 or so 40s-60s crime films. There's an interesting little bit where one of the cops is describing the kind of girl who falls into porn and then for the next 10-15 minutes we get that story essentially - kind of a cool bit of narrative exploration here for Mr. Wood. Otherwise it's pretty schlocky and as usual very poorly acted with occasional unintentionally hilarious dialogue. Pretty strange to see Wood making an overtly moralistic, anti-porn film...OR IS IT??? 2 is what it deserves I think.

I wasn't planning to participate, but I ended up seeing a couple of bad films due to the other challenges, so why not.

0. Crocodile Dundee II (1988 - 5.5 on imdb) - also Australia - 5.8 - just a smidgen too high for the challenge, but it's still bad. Mind you, not as bad as...
1. Crocodile Dundee III (2001 - 4.8 on imdb) - also Australia - 5.4 - It's been 15 years, he can't still play the ignorant backwater boy card.
0. Pembalasan ratu pantai selatan/Lady Terminator (1989 - 5.7 on imdb) - also scifi - 2.4 - An Indonesian attempt at American scifi, it's so bad I was shocked that it was rated so highly. Similar American films are usually in the 2-3 range. Definitely falls in the "so bad it's good" category, though. But it's still bad. They even lift the line "come with me if you want to live".
2. Pulgasari (1985 - 5.2 on imdb) - also scifi - 3.4 - The (in)famous North Korean Godzilla copycat made by the kidnapped South Korean director. It wasn't half-bad... but it was still bad. Better than Lady Terminator
3. En vildfågel/Give Me My Son (1921 - 5.4 on imdb) - 5.8 - Boring little-seen Swedish silent drama.
4. Resident Evil 5: Retribution (2012 - 5.4 on imdb) - also scifi - 4.0 - The first 4 ranged from good to acceptable, but this one was just plain ridiculous. Mildly interesting way to bring back Rain and Carlos, two of the better characters from the universe, but not enough to salvage the film. I'll still watch the final one eventually.
5. Maniac (1934 - 3.4 on imdb) - also scifi - 4.2 - Seriously, wtf? Odd little film that only gets credit for actually getting completed and screened in the 1930s; I guess they needed some serious escapism to get over the Depression.

If I can manage to unintentionally see 5 films that fit this challenge, I should be able to see 5 in all.

I've seen this being called one of the greatest action films of all time by quite a few people. I guess I can see why, because it's practically watching a video game. I mean, they even go through different scenarios which felt like levels in a game. I still didn't like it though.
My father didn’t have the skill of a professional cameraman. The result? Avant-garde cinema.

Gorging indeed. I'm seriously going to take a month off from challenges and try to take in some quality cinema for a little while in February.
All three of the February challenges offer a chance for "quality cinema." As much as I love turkeys it was a relief to watch a couple of Oscar Micheaux silents and follow them up with Sounder.

I was kinda still full of Turkey after the yearly November challenge over on Trash Epics but a few low-flyers did come my way over the opening month of 2018.

1. Once in a New Moon / 1935, Anthony Kimmins / 5.0 on IMDb
2. Rose of Cimarron / 1952, Harry Keller / 5.2 on IMDb
3. Tiger by the Tail / 1954, John Gilling / 5.4 on IMDb
4. The Giant Gila Monster / 1959, Ray Kellogg / 3.4 on IMDb
5. Naked Fury / 1959, Charles Saunders / 5.3 on IMDb
6. Out of the Shadow / 1961, Michael Winner / 5.1 on IMDb
7. Uho te Uka, La Leyenda / 2012, Waitiare Kaltenegger Icka / 3.9 on IMDb

Cheers!
That's all, folks!

Well, that's it from me. It's been exhausting hosting this challenge, but I am absolutely chuffed that Low IMDb Rating (one of my own challenge ideas) managed to be the busiest challenge this month.

I'm also very happy that it was a hit, and look forward to it being a regular thing. There's gold in them there bad movies! Well, silver at least.
Here's to the fools who dream.

I did, it's...very just okay.

You can tell the bright spots by the cast.
