34. The Time Machine (1969)

Don't remember the book well enough to compare, but this seemed underwhelming. There were some cool effects for the time, but the far distant future didn't have enough thought out - I didn't get the whole dual society thing (I mean, I got it, but the film didn't give me enough to understand or care), and some of the costuming from that time was underdeveloped.

35. Between: Hope (2016)
36. Between: Extraction (2016)
37. Between: Horatio Rising (2016)
38. Between: Don't Look Back (2016)

Done with this, and glad. Season 2 (6 episodes) simultaneously went too fast and too slow. Lots of plot development and action, but too much stupid petty drama they didn't develop. And with the constant reminder that none of these people can act their way out of a paper bag, it made for a slow experience. Can't say I'd recommend this to anyone.

14. Invaders from Mars, by Willam Cameron Menzies (1953) 5,5/10

I expected much more from this lowbrow space invasion flick... Not very inventive or surprising, really...

15. Ikarie XB 1, by Jindrich Polák (1963) 8/10

A very interesting approach to space travel. A solid narrative, and many surprising or thought-provoking situations. Beautiful restauration, too.

16. Veronica, by Paco Plaza (2017) 7/10

Good horror, with a solid atmospheric approach. It may have been very classic, but I still enjoyed it.

17. Insidious : The Final Key, by Adam Robitel (2017) 6/10

With every sequel, the Insidious franchise becomes fantasy rather than plain horror. By playing on the "other world"/our world notion, we see demons/spirits interacting with humans and travels become commonplace. This prequel wasn't frustrating, and some moment wre well-made, but this is definitely not great cinema.

18. The Lost World, by Harry O. Hoyt (1925) 8/10

An early exploration movie, with lots of humor and adventure. And animated dinosaurs, no less !! A lot of fun, visual ambition and a solid rythm.

Kiwi film about a woman on the lam trying to deal with a rat infection at the cabin where she is hiding out. Turns out, it is no ordinary rat problem and the 'rats' might be monsters, aliens, mutant animals or worse. Some nifty 'rat' point-of-view shots and effectively gruesome special effects, but not really an especially remarkable film overall, though I do like the idea of a creature that becomes automatically immune to whatever treatments are used to destroy others of its species.

19. Barbarella, by Roger Vadim (1968) 7/10

Psychedelic & pop sci-fi flick, with a lot of humor and corny moments... The Sex scene with David Hemmings is a very strong moment, really... And I finally found out where the Duran Duran got their band name from...

01. - 23. Travelers (2016/17) Episodes 02 - 24 Once you're a few episodes in this gets quite good.
24. - 38. Game of Thrones (2011/19) Episodes 53 - 67
39. Infinity Chamber (2016) Very simple and effective low budget slow burn.
40. Dark Skies (2013)
41. G.O.R.A. (2004) When the jokes aren't hitting this is very dry and dull.
42. The Vampire (1957) - A very good Dr. Jekyl/Mr. Hyde adaptation.
43. Four Sided Triangle (1953) - I've known of this film for a number of years and always assumed it had something to do with the Bermuda Triangle...how wrong I was. A good surprise, at least in terms of concept.
44. Krakatit (1948) - This was a disappointment honestly. I was expecting to be blown away, my anticipation perhaps killing its impact.
45. The Golem (1936) All that lead up and the Golem is awakened and destroyed in a matter of five minutes. From what I remember, in the 1920's version the Golem was making a ruckus for half the film.
46. The Prize of Peril (1983)
47. Memoirs of a Survivor (1981)
48. Memories (1995) My preference of the shorts is the same as the order in which they appear. This is probably the most impressive anthology movie I've seen.
49. Memory Lane (2012) Eww
50. Mill Of The Stone Women (1960) Great atmosphere and set design.
51. The Island of Lost Souls (1932)
52. The Omega Man (1971) The worst of the bunch regarding the Richard Matheson novel 'I Am Legend'.
53. Alraune (1930) While the '52 version is better directed and in general much more pleasant to the eyes I preferred this versions' story.
54. Alraune (1952)
55. Loom (2012) + Science Fiction Theater "The Strange Lodger" (1957) + Science Fiction Theatre "One Hundred Years Young" (1955)

I would probably have seen this earlier if I had known that it is more or less an unofficial 5th film or sequel to Antonio Margheriti's "Gamma Quadrilogy" from 1966. It's got a somewhat strange production history, which I'm guessing the Wikipedia entry relates accurately but not in as much detail as I'd like. Basically MGM was involved with the Margheriti films and released them stateside (3 of them are now on DVD on Warner Archive) dubbed and I guess wanted to make another but for some reason (here's where the details are lacking on Wiki) is ended up being made in Japan rather than Italy by Fukasaku who is best known now for the long string of yakuza films he made shortly after this. And since MGM was financing it, it had to be made in English with Caucasian actors so it very much has the feel of Italian and American genre films of the period, without a lot of Japanese flavor; perhaps when I've seen more of the director's work I'll be able to see his imprint more, but as is it feels an awful lot like the earlier Margheriti films, which is all to the good IMO. The bright primary colors, the cheesy but cool miniatures, the comradeship of the military, scientific and medical personnel - all pretty cool, and this is all really well done and pretty exciting up until and except for...the monsters, which are among the most idiotic and fake looking creatures you'll see in a color SF film from this period or later. They really look like throwbacks to something like The Creeping Terror and they really take down the film - which otherwise would I think be considered good enough at least to not show up on many bad movie lists. As it is, being a generous rater and looking more at the good than the bad I enjoyed the hell out of this and will give it a 7. Not overall one of the best perhaps, but certainly one of the most fun watches in this challenge for me.

47. Turkey Shoot (Brian Trenchard-Smith, 1982)
48. Dead End Drive-In (Brian Trenchard-Smith, 1986)

This turned out to be a very appropriate double feature; apart from the being from the same director and both being (nominally) science fiction, the two share a broad dystopian vision, though it's articulated in very different ways.

Turkey Shoot is - and I hate to keep calling films mash-ups but it's a pretty accurate shorthand here - "1984" meets "The Most Dangerous Game". Really, if you're familiar with both of those literary works - or their better cinematic adaptations - that's it. A group of people are sent to a "re-education" camp in a totalitarian society, and then those who run the camp make sport by setting a few of them "free" if they can escape a brutal hunt. There might also be shades of Punishment Park and of various SF TV shows from the period - I know there was a similar episode of Logan's Run for example. Nothing new here, and nothing all that novel in the execution, but it's reasonably well done and fun and has just the right level of violence and nudity to keep it in exploitation territory while not seeming so exsessive that you forget the overall message, such as it is. Ratings-wise, a generous 7

Image

Dead End Drive-In on the other hand is something really special; in this case the dystopia is much more subtle, one of diminished expectations and dreams, in which (mostly) young people end up in a "drive in" from which they can't escape. They get to watch movies (mostly earlier Brian Trenchard-Smith films!), they get food, they can sleep in their cars, they can get beer and drugs, but they can't leave. It's a parable of course about the whole bread and circuses mentality in a society - give people enough to sate their momentary desires, don't scare them or physically abuse them, and they'll lie down like sheep for the slaughter. Of course we have one man, our hero Crabs (Ned Manning) who won't give up trying to keep his cherry-red '56 Chevy running and won't give up on dreams of escape.

Beautifully shot in a neon-inflected bright color palette, full of classic cars and classic tunes, and with a lot of references to the culture of the time that probably will have to be sorted out in future viewings, this struck me as almost the ur-80s-film, a reminder of the excesses of the Me Generation and of Reaganism and Thatcherism - and there's a more unpleasant side to this fenced-in paradise that comes out in the last third of the film that surely has even more resonance today under Trumpism - a feeling that this was a film of it's time and of the future, a warning but also a celebration of the music and color and hair and cars starting to fade before a grim onslaught of coming environmental catastrophe and diminished resources, expectations, and... dreams. Which makes the ending - quite similar to the climax of Turkey Shoot something both triumphant and sadly, increasingly hard to believe or hope for.

Easily my favorite film of the Aussie challenge - probably of all three challenges this month - so far and a top 5-10 from Oceania, and apologies to George Miller but I think this is the most interesting post-apocalyptic or dystopian vision Australia has produced. I hope the brilliant new Arrow Blu-Ray will help give this some of the recognition it deserves. 9

49. BloodRayne (Uwe Boll, 2005)

Image

My first Uwe Boll film! Was hoping I'd have a chance to see one without actively searching - my local library doesn't have any of his lowest-rated stuff and getting it from another library could have taken a while; and this was the on I most wanted to see since it ties in with fantasy/sf. But lo and behold, the gods of bad movies sometimes smile upon you and I picked up a still-shrink-wrapped copy at Goodwill last week for 1.99. Which is more than it's worth by most measures I suppose. On the one hand, I'm not yet ready to join with those ripping on Boll as worst-ever or anything, and comments like "completely incompetent" go too far; this is fairly easy to follow as storytelling, the camerawork is not completely awful, the acting isn't good but certainly isn't on the level of that in Maniac or Plan 9, and some of the fight sequences are... adequate, I guess. And it's amazing the actors Boll got for this - Ben Kingsley, Udo Kier (ok, both of them have done some schlock, but still) and friggin' Geraldine Chaplin! Oh and Michelle Rodriguez, Kristanna Loken and Michael Madsen aka the John Carradine of the 21st century. On the other hand, the editing and use of slow-mo are horrible, the music's bad, and there's an unremitting unpleasantness to it all; it's an exploitation film that revels in it's debauchery and in particular in it's treatment of the women characters. So all in all it is pretty terrible, but certainly not for me in worst-of-all-time territory. 2 I give it.

50. Chandni Chowk to China (Nikkhil Advani, 2009)

Image

More proof that I can't trust Bollywood ratings at all; this mash-up of Bollywood (song and dance and romance) and Chinese (martial arts and the particular kind of sentimentality in the father-daughter relationship) sensibilities was a pretty large-budget film by Indian standards, with a couple of Hindi superstars (Akshay Kumar and Deepika Pradukone) and a classic Hong Kong martial arts figure (Gordon Liu), some American financing (which is why I have a DVD of it from..somewhere) - but it was a big ol' flop with generally mediocre reviews. I dunno, it worked for me. The fighting sequences were pretty solid, all the lead actors worked pretty well, especially Pradukone in a dual role, and seemed to be having fun, and the music wasn't annoying (though not memorable either - Lagaan, the last Bollywood film I watched, at least had one or two songs that stayed with me 5 minutes after the film was over). I doubt I'll return to it often but I had a good time and it was one of the more genuinely enjoyable (as opposed to so-bad-it's-good) watches of this challenge for me. 7 it gets.

51. Sorceress (Jack Hill, 1982)

Image

The first thing to know about this latter-day Corman production is not the director or genre or anything else, but writer Jim Wynorski, one of the worst T&A filmmakers around. You know there's going to be sex (or at least nudity) and it's going to be sleazy, and there isn't going to be much else of interest - and you're right. This stars a couple of Playboy playmates, the Harris twins, as a couple of babes with, you guessed it, a destiny handed down from the Gods to defeat evil! In the form of their own father, who had planned on slaying his firstborn as a sacrifice but was thwarted by their mother who he of course killed. Lots of naked breasts here, really terrible fight scenes, completely unmemorable in any way unless the Harris twins' assets are enough for you. Not for me so I'll give it a 2; at this point probably the worst of the 80s barbarian fantasies I've seen.

52. Dr. Goldfoot & the Bikini Machine (Norman Taurog, 1965)

Image

Along with all the serious and semi-serious spy movies that came along in the wake of Bond we also have quite a number of total spoofs, among them this Vincent Price vehicle wherein he plays a mad scientist who creates bikini-clad robots with the intent of putting them near the levers of power so he can RULE THE WORLD - no, actually, just putting them near wealthy men so he can get rich quick. I guess it's refreshing that the bad guy has such modest desires? But that's about the only interesting thing here; sure it's got babes but there are hundreds of spy movies that have those; and it's got Price of course but he's in plenty of vastly better films and not too many worse ones. Frankie Avalon is no help as a hapless secret agent, and there's an UNBELIEVABLY long and interminable chase sequence that ends the film not soon enough. Not bad theme song or credits sequence. 3 is the best I can do and it was so dull I didn't even consider watching Mario Bava's sequel which has an even worse reputation. Sorry Mario.

53. Eliminators (Peter Manoogian, 1986)

After three really, really bad and dull movies in a row I finally got lucky, though I can't say I struck gold. Copper, perhaps. This is a fairly standard but enjoyable Indiana Jones-cum-Terminator-influence trek through a jungle, with Denise Crosby as a scientist whose work has been stolen by a megalomaniac, Andrew Prine as the Jones or more accurately Han Solo-type amoral guide who will get her to the scientist's hideout, and Patrick Reynolds as the half-man, half-machine victim of said scientist's experiments. Crosby has a little flying robot that can do just about anything and serves as an excuse to get them out of jams, and also the Ewok/Short Round cuteness that I guess they felt they needed. The low budget and some poor editing decisions certainly hurt this but it's overall a reasonable enjoyable diversion. 6 from me.

54. The Avengers (Jeremiah Chechik, 1998)

Right off the bat I'll mention that I'm not really familiar with the 60s TV series this is based on, so no "what an awful adaptation" or "this movie ruined my childhood" shit from me here. This starts out fairly well in the first few scenes, with Ralph Fiennes (pretty decent) as our hero John Steed first going implacably through a test of his umbrella-wielding fighting skills, then meeting Dr/Mrs Emma Peel (Uma Thurman, ravishing) and getting involved in the race to stop whoever is trying to destroy the weather in the UK through the Prospero Project, which Peel created. That's two flicks in a row with female scientists having their work taken by megalomaniac older men (in this case it's Sean Connery) in order to do Bad Things. Alas it's only maybe 15 minutes in when things start going horribly wrong and the film becomes nearly incomprehensible and stays that way till the end. Apparently this got terrible test reviews and so the studio (of course) decided to chop 1/2 hour out of it to make it more action-packed or something like that, not worrying of course that they were going to lose any sense of structure or narrative flow or much of the rationale for the events that happen.

I will say though that even though there are some good things here - I like Fiennes and Jim Broadbent as his boss "Mother", and Thurman is very fetching in her black leather catsuit, and the production design is quite nice overall - I don't think the film would probably be very good even if the best-case-scenario director's cut could ever be put out, because there is also a fatal error in tone throughout the film. Everybody talks in such an exaggerated cheerio-stiff-upper-lip, I say looks like London's going to freeze to death, dontcha know - and I mean everybody, all the way through the film - that it cannot be taken as anything but a parody, and alas a parody that isn't funny. I really don't know what the rationale for this approach was but making a parodic action film for $60 million (it'd probably be at least double that today) aimed mostly at the American market based on a TV series that few in the target demographic have heard of....well, thank goodness nobody does such stupid shit today. I mean it'd be like making a $200 million film about The Lone Ranger or something like that. 4.

55. Sangraal, la spada di fuoco / Sword of the Barbarians (Michele Massimo Tarantini, 1982)

Image

Another barbarian fantasy from 1982, this one from Italy, featuring "Peter McCoy" (Pietro Torrisi) as one of the most heavily-muscled slabs of beefcake in the genre this side of Schwarzenegger and Ferrigno. Guess what, his destiny is to defeat an Evil One who has destroyed his village and murdered his wife, how original is that? This has nicer scenery (more outdoor location shooting) than most of the other lower-budgeted efforts in this genre I've seen, and some pretty good fight sequences, and while the regular low-angle shots that emphasize crotches and chests can be a bit disconcerting at least it's a slightly different visual style. Also our lead dude gets a magic crossbow that looks like it weighs 100 kg and which fires three bolts simultaneously, so points for that. Overall it's still not good but more fun than the Wynorski/Hill effort I saw the previous night. Probably won't get to watching all 4 Deathstalker films like I'd planned for this challenge now, but after the barbarian flicks I've already seen I think I'm hitting my limit. 4 for this piece of beef&cheese-cake.
Here's to the fools who dream.

27. Star Wars: Episode III - Revenge of the Sith (George Lucas, 2005) [Rewatch] 7->6-/10
Without the powerful ending, I would probably enjoy it less than Episode I.

Image

28. The X-Files S3Ep19: Hell Money (Tucker Gates, 1996) 7/10
Not really an X-File but much more original plot than previous few episodes.

1. Interstellar (Christopher Nolan, 2014) [Rewatch] 9/10 =
Image

2. Angel's Egg / Tenshi no tamago (Mamoru Oshii, 1985) 7+/10
Dark, mysterious tale of a young girl carrying an egg for unknown motives and destination in a crepuscular atmosphere. The plot remains enigmatic all along so you need to form your own judgement and guesses on what you see but it is really worth for the graphical work and soundtrack.

Image

3. Bram Stoker's Dracula (Francis Ford Coppola, 1992) [Rewatch] 7+>8-/10
More Fantasy than Horror, this Dracula is now benefiting from a 4K remaster and HDR BR release which makes it a real feast for the eyes. It could have been great if the plot was not dragging and so incoherent in the second half.
Image

4. Avengers: Age of Ultron (Joss Whedon, 2015) 4+/10
Apart from the first sequence in the snow, it is practically the same scene of super heroes throwing cars at each other in large avenues repeated ad nauseam.

Image

5. Space Adventure Cobra (Osamu Dezaki, 1982) 8-/10
Erotico- space opera anime with really nice graphical design, lot of fun if you can bear the typical 80s reckless charisma of the hero.

Image

6. The Witches of Eastwick (George Miller, 1987) 5-/10
You keep hoping it will eventually deliver either as a comedy or a fantasy flick but fails in both. Lot of dated, macho humor.

Image

7. The Snow Queen / Snezhnaya koroleva (Lev Atamanov, 1957) 8/10
Charming Russian animated film based on the tale from HC Andersen, the original voices make a lot for it.

Image

8. Faraway, So Close! / In weiter Ferne, so nah! (Wim Wenders 1993) 7/10
Quite a pleasant sequel of The Wings of Desire, with Bruno Ganz again and a quite convincing new fallen angel played by Otto Sander but apart from rehashing the concept with new characters, Wenders doesnt have much more to say and the plot drags horribly in the last part.

Image

9. Jurassic World (Colin Trevorrow, 2015) 6/10
One of the worst of the series in terms of character development (which says a lot) and the story is really nothing new but it has a few entertaining sequences, good to see the pteros again.

Image

10. Urusei Yatsura 2: Beautiful Dreamer / Urusei Yatsura 2: Byûtifuru dorîmâ (Mamoru Oshii, 1984) 6-/10
I was expecting a "philosophical" anime, reading some reviews, and was eventually disappointed by the rather esoteric, romantic twist, which also comes too late after enduring too much average comedy.

Image

11. Under the Skin (Jonathan Glazer, 2013) [Rewatch] 6+>7-
Brilliant for the commentary on social and physical inequalities, I am less convinced by the constant visual experimentation and mix of genres.

Image

12. Mary Shelley's Frankenstein (Kenneth Branagh, 1994) 5-/10
A very mediocre Frankenstein due to the number of plot inconsitencies and the poor acting (Helena Bonham Carter excepted).

Image

13. Scanners (David Cronenberg, 1981) 7-/10
Has a suspenseful soundtrack that contributes a lot to the atmosphere. A little long and bland at times although the wait is rewarded by a great ending.

Image

14. The X-Files S3Ep15: Piper Maru (Rob Bowman, 1996) 6/10
15. The X-Files S3Ep16: Apocrypha (Kim Manners, 1996) 6+/10
I didnt feel a lot of inspiration in this two-parts story where a lot of elements of the main story line are thrown as fillers. The fact they used French Canadian actors with distinctive accents for the French characters did bother me.

Image

16. Les Visiteurs du Soir (Marcel Carné, 1942) 7/10
Jules Berry's entrance as the devil is definitely boosting the film half-way, after a rather slow and conventional start.

Image

17. Star Wars: Episode I - The Phantom Menace (George Lucas, 1999) [Rewatch] 6>5/10
Worse than I recalled, only young Anakin and the race vaguely held my interest.

18. Twixt (Francis Ford Coppola, 2011)
Low budget and unambitious, yet entertaining to some degree. 6-/10

19. A Story of the Forest: Mavka / Lesnaya pesnya. Mavka (Yuri Ilyenko, 1981) 8+/10
I don't remember how it ended in my watchlist but that is truly a fantastic film with forest nymphs and spirits venturing in the world of men: beautifully shot in natural light and reminiscent of Parajanov work. Need to get this on DtC list.

20. Ex Machina (Alex Garland, 2014) [Rewatch] 6/10 (=)
Promising but doesnt manage to elevate from its crowd-pleasing sexual domination pitch.

Image

21. The X-Files S3Ep17: Pusher (Rob Bowman, 1996) 6+/10
Decent mind control and cat-and mouse plot.

Image

22. The X-Files S3Ep18: Teso dos Bichos (Kim Manners, 1996) 5+/10
How low will Season 3 go ?

23. Star Wars: Episode II - Attack of the Clones (George Lucas, 2002) 6/10
The love story is an implausible bore and not only because of Hayden Christensen miscast. Fortunately the action in the last hour is bringing a bit of fun.

Image

24. Pom Poko / Heisei tanuki gassen ponpoko (Isao Takahata, 1994) 7+/10
An other environmentalist tale from Studio Ghibli with great visual moments and energy. A little long and trivial at times.

Image

25. Dead or Alive: Final (Takashi Miike, 2002) 7-/10
Psychedlic yakuza delight.

Image

26. Youth Without Youth (Francis Ford Coppola, 2007) 5+/10
Coppola doesn't seem to know what films he wants to make before the very end.
