I really like this movie, except that it was too sweet for my test. But I loved the scenery and the weird relationship between the actors and Sally Hawkins is amazing.

Yeah, these nationalist always trying to break things apart... :sarcasm: To be honest I never thought about it until now. Let's hear what other participants say.
The way I look at it is that a film should be eligible if it is clearly and patently a production from the place in question. I wasn't intending to watch this film but just happened to come across it and I'm hugely glad that I did. I think it is a uniquely Welsh film and, indeed, Wales is a country with its own Parliament and sporting teams so I don't see why it shouldn't be eligible. Should someone come across a similarly Scottish-themed film, I think it would be quite alright as well.

1 in favour, 2 against and the rest don't care: we keep UK united and Wales is discarded. I cannot count it for United Kingdom either because you had already checked it. That means losing your 27th check, Roger.

Mario and hurluberlu haven't explored or explained at all why they view Wales as a non-country. Both appear rather non-committal to me. I shall be counting it. It's of course up to you as host whether or not to count it for the collected totals.
That's all, folks!

Because sortile as a host sets up the rules. Do I have to explain further?

He's in charge of this challenge: the boss, The Master, the ruler and his word is the last one.

I get that and it is his prerogative to rule on issues as he wishes. I only mentioned you because of your comment that the cinematic output of the constituent countries or nations of the United Kingdom was only split up for the World Cup. You used the word 'thankfully' and that caught my eye. Do you think it would be too complicated to allow relevant titles from Wales, Scotland and (it pains me as an Irishman to say this) Northern Ireland?

I didn't mean to draw you into this or unfairly criticise you, Mario. I'm merely interested and intrigued by your perspective.

Well I just said that coz it looks more like a football tournament.

But you should look about IRL/NIR split up as a chance to show more than one Irish film in the cup. Aren't you divided by religion, anyway? (Republic is Catholic, North is Protestant?)

I've touched upon this before but I don't think I could bring myself to manage a Northern Irish entry. There's a split between Catholics and Protestants in the North, with the latter generally wanting to remain in the Union. I'd say that a majority in the Republic aren't too committed to the idea of reunification between North and South. The issue has simply been left drag and the ruling Fine Gael party certainly aren't going to make it a priority. The sense of distance and a split between communities will only grow due to this inaction.

I'm not religious though and I take that as a great blessing.
That's all, folks!

Hehe, a nice little tune. I've never heard of them before. Interesting to see an Irish folk music group from Serbia!

I'll have to thank the ICM forum for coming up with this idea - as it is exactly the sort of thing that I love!

That said, my S/O and I decided to make these things quite a lot more complicated than the rest of you who are just plowing through as many movies as possible:

We'll watch the film (which I try to find one that's on an official list) but turn the occasion into a celebration of that country, where we'll include the following:

-Making some sort of food dish (typically a dessert since you don't have a lost meal if things go wrong!)
-Watching a travelogue (Rick Steves / James Fitzpatrick / etc)
-Reading the history/CIA Factbook/culture/etc
-Take a Google Maps StreetView tour through the country
-Finding our favorite (most humorous) local phrases (Mali = When the donkey dies, the farting will stop)
-Listen to music from the country + do some sort of activity relevant for the country

So of course this will be a much slower process for us than all the rest of you, but I can keep track of our progress here for those so inclined (we are allowed to keep posting here after the challenge has ended, right?). We're doing the same thing with all of the US States (and territories) and Canadian Provinces (and territories) - but so far we've only done Washington D.C. on that project (Being There).

Here's our World progress so far:

001 Ireland = Secret of the Kells
002 Indonesia = Mystics in Bali
003 Denmark = Babette's Feast
004 Chile = Battle of Chile Part 2
005 Mali = Guimba the Tyrant
006 Turkey = Dry Summer + Turkish Star Wars
007 Papua New Guinea = Trobriand Cricket
008 Belize = 2012: Curse of the Xtabai + Mega Piranha (filmed in Belize)
009 North Korea = Pulgasari

We're not doing world overseas territories/dominions/unrecognized countries/etc - so no Cayman Islands/Pitcairn/Western Sahara/etc (maybe once we've finished everything else..). I consider there to be 197 countries.

I'd recommend our approach -as you can get a far greater understanding of the country + the film you watched! The best was when we watched Mali and saw people in the film eating the dessert we had just made (which was terrible: Maasa - I dumped the rest of it on some friends after I told them it was gluten-free!).

Hah!

My fault for not checking dates (how was I to guess there'd be multiples of the exact same thing going on? + how does someone see 100+ feature films in a month?). It was the other thread that I originally saw a couple years ago that inspired our endeavor... thus I thought I was posting in that thread. Oh well!

Well, good luck all on your month's challenge (none of the films I saw qualify for your timespan - Pulgasari was in October). See you in the other thread (I'll re-post my spiel there).

The premise of this one is horrendous but I wouldn't be surprised if it was based on actual events. I will not quote the storyline though, I don't want to give ideas that some may fancy to put into practice. :D

Wow, that's a great approach. It is a pity you didn't show up before because following your steps would have been a really amusing experience for all of us. I usually also try to read something about the places where the films I watch were made in, see some maps, pictures, etc. specially when it comes to lesser known countries. But cooking, dancing (guess you'll do some tango when conquering Argentina), etc. goes beyond my patience.

:worship:

If you plan to continue posting your progress I think you'd better switch to the ongoing version of this challenge once this one is over (that is, tomorrow) because it will become inactive soon after that. Of course, in the meantime you can post in both.

According to this article it was the other way around. Believe it or not.

Edit: The real horror here is that over 1000 people dies in mining accidents every year in China. And that’s just the reported incidents.

Now before you take a blame on me, remember I've got a specialization degree in tourism (yeah, college + 1 year above) which doesn't help either. At the last application I went to - training at Hotel Hyatt - they offered 10 positions to several hundreds of candidates; right now I'm waiting for their answer and if turns out to be 'no', I'll probably set off to Malta where dramatically increasing number of Serbian citizens already arrived. They need waiters, drivers, but I wouldn't mind picking garbage either. I'm planning to use that money for another faculty degree: IT. They say it's the only sector you can earn living here.

You others should be lucky for not having this stand-up comedian to rule your lives:
