A revision. I actually prefer this to the more highly acclaimed sequel. The interior design/sets are magnificent. Same goes for the fight choreography.

apart from the first 20 minutes, the film seems to be almost entirely on location in Monaco. It's also listed as a Monaco co-production everywhere, including on IMDb which is what we're going by.
There is zero production company based in Monaco involved in this. It was probably entered due to the shooting location. It has been representing France in various festivals. If we loosen criteria to complete the list, at least let's take stuff that somehow say something about the location.
I have taken a look-see (it's on YT) and I've see more Monaco than Paris (many indoors too that I couldn't identify or were anonymous). Some sites say it is just French while others say it is a co-production with Monaco (maybe some of them take the information from IMDb). Could it be that Monaco is there just to gain some tax benefits? I cannot tell which one is right. I will pass it but please try to pick films less disputed.
French citizens can't claim tax benefits from residence or business in Monaco, there is a treaty between the two countries preventing that.

I am obviously not French and I should have read about this before. Participants (or passers-by) from France, correct me if I'm wrong.
- Martinique, Guadeloupe, French Guiana, Réunion and Mayotte are overseas regions with the same status as the metropolitan regions (Normandy, Île-de-France, etc.) only they're not in Europe. This is very similar to the Spanish Canary Islands. They should be therefore removed (three were on the unconquered list, Martinique was missing at all).
- Saint Martin, Saint Barthélemy, Saint Pierre and Miquelon, French Polynesia and Wallis and Futuna. They have some degree of autonomy (French Polynesia in particular) but are nevertheless administrative divisions of France and as such they could also be removed (only French Polynesia was on the unconquered list).
- New Caledonia. A special case with a unique status and seemingly on its way to become an indepent country (maybe even as soon as next year). There is a New Caledonian citizenship in addition to the French. So I think we could keep it (it is on the unconquered list).
Looks about right although there is a referendum in New Caledonia next year for self-determination, nothing is done yet.
Anyway at this stage of the competition I would let them in and park them, otherwise you need to clean US, British and Dutch territories too and some of us have already conquered them.

I'm not certain about the status of the islands and territories formerly known as the Netherlands Antillies but the French overseas territories are very much regarded as part of France. I don't think it hurts to have them in a challenge such as this, for films that might be uniquely representative of one of these outremer départements. British and American overseas holdings past and present are often somewhat different in status to the French, I think.

Generally, I think it is good to be as open and non-excludatory as possible when it comes to appraising the status and eligibility of countries and regions.

British Overseas Territories (Anguilla, Bermuda, Cayman Islands, Gibraltar, Montserrat, Pitcairn, etc.) are different from the French (I forgot to mention French Southern Territories, by the way.) because although they are "under the jurisdiction and sovereignty of the United Kingdom", "these territories do not form part of the United Kingdom". So they can't be removed.

As for the Dutch, we only have listed Aruba, Netherlands Antilles and Surinam. Aruba is part of the Kingdom of the Netherlands just like the Netherlands Antilles was until it was dissolved in 2010. And Suriname was formerly part of the kingdom too but an independent country since 1975. The first two remain unconquered while the last one has been already conquered by blocho with a film from 1976, so no problem here. Hope some Dutch can enlighten us.

Another case of change of name: Siam and Thailand. The former was used before 1939 and in the 1946-1948 period. IMDb is consistent with this and lists only titles (seven to be precise, three of them footage from royal ceremonies) prior to 1930. So I will remove Siam (from the unconquered).

You can easily conquer Bermuda by joining three shorts. Also Netherlands Antilles by watching Tula: The Revolt and Gibraltar with Instant Justice. Brunei Darussalam is conquerable with Yasmine.

Guadeloupe is conquerable with Nèg Maron, it's in French without English subs.

17. L'arnacoeur / Heartbreaker (Chaumeil, 2010, France-Monaco) Image 4/10
18. Jiang tou / Black Magic (Meng-Hua, 1975, Hong Kong) Image
An often dull tale of people using magical roofies on each other. Cool magical duel at the end though.
4/10

Image

19. Bakemono no ko / The Boy and the Beast (Hosoda, 2015, Japan) Image
Beautiful animation and a layered story about loneliness and the struggle to control emotions although the plot doesn't fit together as well as I'd like, with superpowers seeming to come out of nowhere towards the end.
6/10

Image

20. Possession (Zulawski, 1981, France-West Germany) Image
This is a rewatch because I was taken aback by the strangeness the first time I watched it. I still find it both highly memorable and off-putting in how hysterical it becomes, but the symbolism is fascinating and Adjani gives an exceptional performance.
6 or 7/10

Image

21. Ojuju (Obasi, 2014, Nigeria) Image
Nigeria's first zombie movie, made with no budget in the slums of Lagos. It needed a better script and editing: nothing happens in the first third of the movie and the zombie action in the later portions in meagre, with many shots of zombies wandering around that go on for ages.
2/10

Image

22. Todo sobre mi madre / All About My Mother (Almodóvar, 1999, Spain-France) Image
I'm not much of a fan of Almodovar (though I did love The Skin I Live In). I don't get the love for this one: the plot twists are so melodramatic while the domestic dramatics are low-key that I found it hard to get invested in the lives of these characters.
5/10

Image

23. Kuutamosonaatti / The Moonlight Sonata (Soinio, 1988, Finland) Image
Two siblings are chased around by the Finnish equivalent of hillbillies. Good cinematography adds a lot of atmosphere, but the action is generic.
4/10

It was more than a name change because the DRC was overthrown by Mobutu, and Zaire was then a new country set up in the same place. Similar to how Russia and the Soviet Union are counted as two different countries.
A change of regime doesn't make a new country. What do you mean by "a new country set up". According to Wikipedia:
Zaire, officially the Republic of Zaire, was the name for the Democratic Republic of the Congo that existed between 1971 and 1997 in Central Africa. [...] Zaire collapsed in the 1990s, [...] With rebel forces successfully making gains beyond the east, Mobutu fled the country, leaving Kabila's forces in charge as the country restored its name to the Democratic Republic of the Congo the following year.
It depends how you define a country, but when a change of political regime is accompanied by a name change and flag change I would consider that a new country, as Mobutu was trying to assert its previous existence as the DRC as an "inauthentic" country. I don't suppose it matters much for this challenge though unless somebody was planning to watch seperate films for Zaire and DRC.

This is only 42 min so you're going to watch some more shorts (18 min) from Colombia to get it checked.

Personally, I think borders and people are much more important than flags or names. And Mobutu needed to change the name because the word Democratic was clearly incompatible with the dictatorial nature of his regime. But, as you say, it all depends on how you define a country. Anyway, for the matter of this challenge they will stay because one participant had already checked both before the issue was brought into question.

Are you saying that you'll permit if the film if it really is Welsh? :mw_confused: I didn't think we were separating the United Kingdom for this challenge. If we are, let me know so that I can try to be the first to conquer Scotland and Northern Ireland. :geek:

It is, yes. An intriguing and fascinating little piece as well with many strands of interest beautifully explored. It aired on the Welsh-language channel S4C and I'm very fortunate to have caught it. I recorded it on a whim and it provided a captivating 50 minutes of viewing. There are threads about the fostering of Welsh culture and heritage in remote Nant Gwrtheyrn and the challenges of classical music creation Super Furry Animals' Cian Ciarán faces coming from a psychedelic rock background. The simple and sad tale of love and loss is explored through lovely animation work that reminded me of Russian matryoshka dolls in the way that one scene opened unto the other. There's a simplicity to it and also something rather exquisite as the tale is recounted unhurriedly through the short form englynion poetry of Gruffudd Antur, as spoken by Rhys Ifans. The way all these threads of place, heritage and identity are drawn together into the grand culmination with the performance of Ciarán's piece by the BBC National Orchestra of Wales is involving and invigorating and reminded me in a way of Fertik and Miller's film on Zubin Mehta and his preparations for concert with 'The Bolero'. I was surprised by how much I ended up liking this one. Here's a little piece that appeared in the Daily Post: https://www.dailypost.co.uk/special-fea ... s-13938521.

Is this a TV documentary about folk legends? I have found even less information about it than about your Irish check.

49. SWEDEN Hugo och Josefin (Grede, 1967) - Made me want to be eight again living in and idyllic rural place. 7/10
50. DOMINICAN REPUBLIC La herencia del tirano (Fortunato, 1998) - Interesting subject for a documentary, the transition from the ruthless dictatorship of the Trujillo family to a democratic regime, apart from the annoying background music, it tries to squeeze just too much material (footage, speeches, photography) into it. 5/10
51. ZIMBABWE Neria (Mawuru, 1993) - A plain and feminist exposition that requests the bending of sexist traditions in rural areas to adapt to the changing times. 6/10
52. SOUTH KOREA Boksuneun naui geot (Park, 2002) - An spiral of violence among different social groups driven by the desire of vengeance, filmed with precision and ingenuity, I loved the use of sound. 7/10
53. PHILIPPINES Insiang (Brocka, 1976) - A melodrama in the slums of Manila, certainly not my favourite subject, but surprisingly good and the restoration looks wonderful. 6/10
54. TURKEY Bes Vakit (Erdem, 2006) - Beautiful and serene depiction of the children’s life in a village of Marmara, the contrast with the solemnity of Arvo Pärt’s music conveys a special touch although I often feel that ambient sounds would be more than enough. 7/10
55. UNITED STATES OF AMERICA For all mankind (Reinert, 1989) - Amazing collection of NASA footage from the Gemini and Apollo missions. 9/10

The way I look at it is that a film should be eligible if it is clearly and patently a production from the place in question. I wasn't intending to watch this film but just happened to come across it and I'm hugely glad that I did. I think it is a uniquely Welsh film and, indeed, Wales is a country with its own Parliament and sporting teams so I don't see why it shouldn't be eligible. Should someone come across a similarly Scottish-themed film, I think it would be quite alright as well.
That's all, folks!

Separating UK is (thankfully) valid for WC only. Not in this challenge. However I support watching films that entirely belong to local production.

If we had the discussion earlier maybe but now let's just abide by the "IMDb country" rule; it is 200+ countries to be conquered already, there will be other occasions for UK.
