Conquer the World Challenge

The Netherlands Antilles ceased to exist in 2010.
Yeah I know but they didn't add Curacao to IMDb - not my fault.

I have an idea for you: once you get back to Canada, you should go to Saint Pierre and Miquelon and make a feature film, whatever the quality. Then you can try to nominate it for the Oscar Foreign Language award. You could make a history, Fergenaprido.

11. Italy - Riusciranno i nostri eroi a ritrovare l'amico misteriosamente scomparso in Africa? by Ettore Scola (1968) 8,5/10

Added to my 500<400 list. A very funny comedy led by a fantastic pair : Albert Sordi and Bernard Blier. The script, by Age & Scarpelli, is excellent. The themes of this superb film are still very relevant, I think...

Yeah I know but they didn't add Curacao to IMDb - not my fault.
However, because of a similar year reason, you corrected IMDb in one of your checks from an ex-Yugoslavian country, I think it was Serbia/Serbia and Montenegro, so that's no excuse. I'm not sure about the Jimmy Cliff music video but for the other I would say that the right nationalities are:

- Lalit and Deepak (Peter Sagnia, 2011, Sint Maarten)
- Heart of a Monster (Damian Marcano, 2016, Curaçao)
- One Day at the Time (Gabri Christa, 2016, Curaçao)

You already did Aruba a few days ago so why not trying to watch some more shorts from Curaçao and Sint Maarten so you have all the Dutch Caribbean countries checked?

I think what sortile is saying is that films made after the dissolution of the Netherlands Antilles should be filed under the relevant new island territories. Allowing post-2010 productions to represent the Antilles would be akin to allowing a Russian film of the present day represent the Soviet Union.

I'm sure pre-2010 films would be fine since former countries are allowed in this challenge. Not sure about what sort of films are available from there! Don't think I've seen anything myself.
That's all, folks!

Yes, exactly, I didn't mean Antilles ought to be excluded from this challenge. Sorry if I didn't explain better, I assumed Mario was familiar the situation of those territories. I recommend in any case reading the corresponding article on Wikipedia, it includes a chart that clarifies the organization of the Dutch Caribbean after 2010.

I see why you put this as Australia - and IMDB doesn't help - but it should certainly be considered a Papua New Guinea film (which is what UNESCO considers it).

This was the most exciting challenge/game I've taken part of here. It really got me into watching lots of movies. I wished I could have watched a lot more African movies. Seeing how people see the world has really gotten me excited about learning about different cultures. It has, also, helped me with loads of ideas to write about. Thanks for hosting

Papua New Guinea became independent in September 1975 and I deduce from the words of Gary Kildea (film-maker) that the film was made before, when it was still Australia. Maybe that's why IMDb lists only the latter. But on the other hand the end credits say that the film was produced by "Office Information Government of Papua New Guinea". This a border case, so I think both countries can be valid.

January 1 Conquistadors Update

This will be the final update. If you post any updates after this, you're just going to have to use your imagination to work out what the table would look like with your further updates included. This last update took me over 30 minutes to do since everyone insisted on watching dozens of films in the last three days of the challenge. Hmm. Anyway, without further ado:

This brings to my mind the Gold Coast affair, several posts above. Technically one could argue that, since India didn't exist yet in 1939 and hadn't existed before, that film could hardly have been "made in India". I'm not sure but I think that British colonies were not part of the United Kingdom (of Great Britain and Northern Ireland), so you couldn't say it was from the UK either. Then what was it? British India? British Raj? But on the other hand you could also say that in any case it is part of the present-day Indian cultural heritage just like the Taj Mahal is, even though it was made while the region was part of the Mogul Empire.

It can be quite confusing and I haven't found a simple consistent logic that can be applied equally to all the different cases that arise in a challenge of this nature. But maybe it's just my faulty sense of logic, who knows?

By the way, time should be up now for everyone. I will wait 2-3 days before making the final tally and posting the results, some people might be still travelling or trying to recover from New Year's Eve.

In the meantime, this could be a good moment, while it is still fresh in our mind's, to post what you think about the flaws and strengths of this edition of the challenge. That information will surely be helpful to improve future editions of this or similar challenges.

I see why you put this as Australia - and IMDB doesn't help - but it should certainly be considered a Papua New Guinea film (which is what UNESCO considers it).
I'll change it to Papua New Guinea (fixed). I saw that production note in the end credits and would have followed that, but IMDB indicated Australia and didn't have an exact release date, so I couldn't compare with the independence date of Papua New Guinea.

I was planning on watching My Brilliant Career for Australia, whether Trobriand Cricket counted for Australia or not, but ended up watching no movies at all yesterday.

I enjoyed the challenge a lot. I did a similar challenge on my own in May, and liked the way it pushed me to greater variety and to things that I had wanted to watch for years, like Trobriand Cricket.

I only managed to watch one more film between my last update and the end of the year:

3. Paddington 2 (King, 2017, UK) Image 5/10
4. Battle of the Sexes (Dayton-Faris, 2017, USA) Image 4/10
5. Bunohan / Return to Murder (Said, 2011, Malaysia) Image 4/10
6. Apocalyptic / Apocalypse Cult (Triggs, 2014, Australia) Image 2/10
7. Aenigma (Fulci, 1987, Italy-Yugoslavia) Image 4/10
8. La fille inconnue / The Unknown Girl (Dardenne-Dardenne, 2016, Belgium-France) Image 5/10
9. Vampire Journals (Nicolaou, 1997, Romania-USA) Image 5/10
10. Henjel gwa Geuretel / Hansel & Gretel (Yim, 2007, South Korea) Image 4/10
11. Phantom of Death / Un delitto poco comune / An Uncommon Crime (Deodato, 1988, Italy) Image 4/10
12. Macabre (Stamboel-Tjahjanto, 2009, Indonesia) Image 5/10
13. The Dark (Fawcett, 2005, Isle Of Man-UK-USA) Image 3/10
14. Dnevnoy dozor / Day Watch (Bekmambetov, 2006, Russia) Image 3/10

19. Bakemono no ko / The Boy and the Beast (Hosoda, 2015, Japan) Image 6/10

23. Kuutamosonaatti / The Moonlight Sonata (Soinio, 1988, Finland) Image 4/10
24. Who Killed Captain Alex? (I.G.G., 2010, Uganda) Image
Funny ultra-low-budget action film from Uganda which comes with a Rifftrax-style voiceover from a "video joker". Technically it's awful, which provides some amusement, but it's clearly deliberately tongue-in-cheek, and some of the video joker's lines are genuinely amusing. The dedication and effort shines through.

Thanks for hosting sortie, and thanks for the additional stats sol.

Flaws: Using imdb as the only guide for countries. It contradicts the convention we use here for polls and the ongoing conquer the world challenge, and created confusion/dissent among the participants this month.

Sorry for being on the late side with this final update. Hope it reaches you in time. I've been in bed with a pretty debilitating cold for the last two or three days and haven't really been able to muster up the energy for much in the way of film-related activity.

28. 'Ansiktet' (1958, Ingmar Bergman) - 10/10 - Sweden
29. 'El amigo' (1960, Leonardo Favio, 11 minutes) - 8/10 + 'Gaudí asesinado por un tranvía' (1968, Jorge Honik, 2 minutes) - 9/10 + 'Passacaglia y Fuga' (1975, Jorge Honik, Laura Honik, 18 minutes) - 10/10 + 'Ofrenda' (1978, Claudio Caldini, 4 minutes) - 8/10 + 'El péndulo' (1981, Fabián Bielinsky, 7 minutes) - 7.5/10 + 'Templario' (2008, Mariano Cattaneo, 8 minutes) - 5/10 + 'Shave It' (2012, Fernando Maldonado, Jorge Tereso, 4 minutes) - 8.5/10 + 'Copetin' (2014, Ernesto Kullock, 6 minutes) - 6/10 - (60 minutes in total) - Argentina
30. 'Con chim vanh khuyen' (1962, Van Thong Nguyen, Vu Tran, 43 minutes) - 7/10 + 'Chúng con nhó Bác' / 'North Vietnamese Newsreel 40230' (1969?, no director credited, 25 minutes) - 7/10 - (68 minutes in total) - North Vietnam
31. 'Agua salada' (1974, Arturo Sinclair, 11 minutes) - 9/10 + 'Madre Tierra' (1978, Leonidas Zegarra, 10 minutes) - 5/10 + 'Una novia en New York' (1987, Gianfranco Annichini, 9 minutes) - 7/10 + 'Canción para un cine cerrado' (1988, Nelson García, 10 minutes) - 7 or 7.5/10 + 'Una pequena mirada' (1992, Danny Gavidia, 10 minutes) - 8/10 + 'Detras del espejo' (2012, Julio O. Ramos, 13 minutes) - 7/10 - (63 minutes in total) - Peru
32. 'Chevalier' (2015, Athina Rachel Tsangari) - 6.5 or 7/10 - Greece
33. 'O Ka' (2015, Souleymane Cissé) - 7.5/10 - Mali

With Wales being ruled ineligible, my final score is 32 points.

Thanks for hosting, sortile! I enjoyed my explorations to corners far and wide a great deal. I think using IMDb as a guide is a sensible rule, with the proviso that arguments against their tags should be entertained when necessary.

Belatedly wishing all challengers a very Happy New Year!

That's all, folks!

YES! I'm so glad someone watched this! It's hilariously inept, but it has so much heart that it more than makes up for any shortcomings. If only Hollywood movies would have a tenth of the passion these guys do...
Personal film goals for 2019.

Opening post updated with final scores. Thank you all for playing this amusing game. I didn't expect so many participants but you've made things easy anyway (well, except that young Irish rebel... what was his name?). ;)

In the end we've been on a par with the other December official challenge, even though in the recent poll to set up the schedule for 2018 challenges the difference in votes was big: 16 for Conquer the World vs 37 for Documentaries. And in terms of posts/views this is among the most active challenges ever.

Congratulations to the winner: Mario Gaborović. See you soon.
