Eastern European Challenge (June 2017)

#81

Post by 3eyes » June 6th, 2017, 3:22 am

1. Macbeth (Hung 82, Bela Tarr)
MTV distillation of the Scottish play in 2 shots, one of which lasts over an hour.

2. Ucieczka z kina 'Wolnosc' / Escape from the 'Liberty' Cinema (Pol 90)
Toward the end of the Communist era a censor is faced with a film in which the actors insist on departing from the script. Many-layered, hilarious and poignant.

@Roger,

I was so glad when I saw that you signed up for the Eastern European challenge! I'm loving your comments, and absolutely ecstatic that you enjoyed one of my favorite discoveries from last year, Golik's 'The Girl and the Oak', with faces and landscape disputing attention amidst the rugged dryness of the imposing Dalmatian Zagora.
RogerTheMovieManiac88 on wrote:I watched Zubavicius' 'Jautrumo kaip duonos...' yesterday on the back of reading your progress post and it's certainly another gem. Somewhat uncomfortable subject matter but very poetically explored and considered. Glad to have seen it.
That was one of my favorites (the DVD is indeed worthy a purchase, very single title is a fascinating piece),
I love the final text:

I believe that there is no such man,
that he has never existed,
and shall never exist.
I believe, as I believe in that with every day comes dawn,
as I believe in my own pain,
in the tenderness offered to me,
I believe. I believe.
I want to believe that one day men would spare gentleness as they would a slice of bread.

Although most of it was filmed in a veterinary clinic, I think he also took brief shots from a children's facility, and other hospitals and clinics - it's that combination of the inexplicable and mysterious, of haunted and haunting visages, of overwhelming gestures of loss and pain, of Vivaldi, that text (and the one that opens the film) that made Edmundas Zubavicius's 'Tenderness Like Bread' so special to me.

Amazing film, so glad you found it!
It is indeed. I love how it takes several elements on Noir cinema, both thematically and aesthetically - the docks, the nightclub, seedy milieu, characters at the end of their rope, hopes constantly crushed , even a venetian-blinded window... -, and makes its own unique vibe. And with no concessions, right up to its bleak final moments...

I'm following your Hungarian ventures with great interest. I've seen 5 Zoltán Fábri ('Körhinta', 'Édes Anna', 'Két félidö a pokolban', 'Isten hozta örnagy úr' and 'Az ötödik pecsét') and all of them have been very special, he is one of my favorites - have 'A Pál utcai fiúk' lined up for the challenge and the upcoming 1968 poll, along with other potentially interesting Hungarian titles!

4. Trois couleurs: Bleu (Three Colors: Blue, Krzysztof Kieslowski, 1993) Poland

Probably my favorite so far. Music in the movie was fantastic.

5. Vtáckovia, siroty a blázni (Birds, Orphans, and Fools, Juraj Jakubisko, 1969) Czechoslovakia

Great feeling through most of the movie with the fools acting out madness.

6. L'homme qui ment (The Man Who Lies, Alain Robbe-Grillet, 1968) Czechoslovakia

Just finished this, not sure what to think yet. Very dreamlike.

01. Zift, by Javor Gardev (2008) 6,5/10

Not very surprising, and the director seems to have a passion for naked people... But it is an honest, well-done thriller (and possibly my first bulgarian movie).

Week 2:

Features:
10. 'Sziámi macska' (1943, László Kalmár) (Hungary) - 8/10 (FTV)
Delightful, offbeat Hungarian musical with Zita Szeleczky pretending to be Siamese. Playful deception and engaging numbers abound amidst a pleasant mix of the humourous and the stylish.
11. 'Valurile Dunarii' (1959, Liviu Ciulei) (Romania) - 10/10 (RV)
A war-time potboiler of intrigue, uncertainty, and romance on the threatening waters of the Danube. Artistically dazzling and sizzling with atmosphere and intensity.
12. 'Horizonte te hapura' (1968, Viktor Gjika) (Albania) - 7/10 (FTV)
Something of a landmark it would seem in Albanian cinema for being set in the modern day. Visually quite striking with its look at the dockyard work of crane operators and the closing storm scene is particularly well staged.
13. 'Un été inoubliable' (1994, Lucian Pintilie) (France/Romania) - 9/10 (RV)
Beautiful, sad, contemplative. Kristin Scott Thomas sparkles and dazzles in the performance of her career.
14. 'Terminus paradis' (1998, Lucian Pintilie) (France/Romania) - 9/10 (FTV)
A haunting, darkly comedic parable from Pintilie. Beauty and ridiculousness. Dreaming and hopelessness. The marriage scene in the little secluded church and the closing exchanges between officer and fugitive in the train carriage are utterly sublime.
15. 'Otec' (2009, Lukás Hanulák) (Slovakia) - 6/10 (FTV)
Student film with a dreamy narrative style and some interesting observations on relationships.
16. 'Amnistia' (2011, Buyar Alimani) (Albania/Greece/France) - 8/10 (FTV)
Terrific drama of a woman surviving while her husband is in prison. Conjugal visits bring impersonal sex and someone else comes tentatively into her life. A threatening and compelling film with a dark patriarchal figure at its centre and a brilliantly spartan, self-contained style of repeating motifs, places, and encounters. The shattering denouement took my breath away.
17. '2 yota aamuun' (2015, Mikko Kuparinen) (Finland/Lithuania) - 7/10 (FTV)
An encounter in Vilnius that might lead to more. Wistful, uncertain, and somewhat reminiscent of 'Lost in Translation'.

Shorts:
'S one strane mora' (1968, Bogdan Zizic, 11 minutes) (Yugoslavia) - 7.5 or 8/10 (FTV)
Ethnographic short film. Visually arresting, as one would expect, with its contrasts, focus on faces, and the architecture of the region.
'Sazamtro' (1974, Carlo Sulakauri, 9 minutes) (Georgia) - 8/10 (FTV)
A remarkable and intelligent little creation from Georgia on the fates of hard-working and not so hard-working fellows and the circularity of existence. Simple and intriguing animation and very engaging. A real find, for me!
'Tango' (1981, Zbigniew Rybczynski, 8 minutes) (Poland) - 10/10 (FTV)
The repeating movements of life across time. A brilliantly executed commentary on society and rituals of existence from the masterful Rybczynski.
'When Snowflakes Covered All Over' (1982, Zdenka Doitcheva, 8 minutes) (Bulgaria) - 7.5/10 (FTV)
Simple yet charming animation about the power of dreams. Different guises are imagined and there's a playful humour allied to the awareness.
'Geranium' (2005, Lucie Sunková, 12 minutes) (Czech Republic) - 10/10 (FTV)
A little masterpiece of painted on glass animation from Lucie Sunková. The painterly beauty that brings to mind such luminaries as Renoir is exquisite but the sense of movement and wistfulness that Sunková attains through her creativity is just as wonderfully eye-catching. Here's a film that can justifiably be compared to the short film wonders so lovingly crafted by Aleksandr Petrov.
'The Horror of Dracula' (2010, Dalibor Baric, 3 minutes) (Croatia) - 9/10 (FTV)
Extraordinary found footage re-telling of the Dracula tale. Astounding and imaginative. Disorientating cut-outs, psychedelic strangeness. Like looking ''right into the rabbit hole'', as someone commented on Vimeo.
'Swimming Pool' (2010, Alexandra Hetmerová, 7 minutes) (Czech Republic) - 6.5 or 7/10 (FTV)
Strange but pleasant little animation of outsiders and connection.
'A Bear Judges the Brides' (2016, Martinus Klemet, 3 minutes) (Estonia) - 8/10 (FTV)
Based upon Estonian folktales about the wiseness of bears. Delightfully narrated with a wry humour and humanity. Klemet is an animator of great talent.
'Shaping Scars' (2016, Sholtay, 8 minutes) (U.K./Hungary) - 8/10 (FTV)
A dance film on the break-up of a relationship. A fascinating performance piece.

Week 2 total: 8 feature films and 69 minutes of short films for 9 points in all.

Total after two weeks: 19 points

Morally ambiguous and disturbing, this film is quite interesting.

03. Faraon, by Jerzy Kawalerowicz (1966) 8,5/10

This was my first film by Kawalerowicz, and I'm very impressed by the visuals.

Czech surrealism to engage against the powers that be... Not my cup of tea, really, even though this is well done.

2. Ostre sledované vlaky [Closely Watched Trains] (1966), Jirí Menzellukewarm (Czechoslovakia)
It’s a coming of age story about a young man who follows in his father’s footsteps and becomes a train dispatcher at a train station, and it’s about his sexual awakening all amidst WW2 and The Third Reich’s occupation. I feel like I need to be Czech(oslovakian) to truly appreciate this film and its subtle jokes. As it stands, it’s decent enough, beautifully shot slice of life with a couple of funny scenes, but I didn't get much out of it.
Seen so far - 2Show
1. Satantango (1994)Show
Original Title: Sátántangó
Director: Béla Tarr
Country: Hungary

This should be worth at least 3 entries. It definitely isn't a film for everyone, but it will reward a patient viewer. Compiled of mostly long takes, some of them as long as 10 minutes, the film moves at a very slow pace, almost naturalistic, it's like the passage of time for characters is the same for a viewer. For me, these 7 and a half hours felt like a couple of days (I actually did watch it during the course of 2 days). This can be a good or a bad thing, depending on the viewer and his/hers patience. For my taste, it is too slow, tbh, but the themes presented in it, the cinematography and music are all too good and intriguing for me to not enjoy it. It's set in a remote Hungarian village in existential crisis. The farm that the villagers collectively own has dried out, so they have to decide what to do. Greed comes into play and some of them plan to escape with the money that needs to be equally divided. After the news breaks out that Irimias, a charismatic, manipulative former co-worker on the farm (who everyone presumed dead) is returning, everything turns to standstill. Villagers seem to respect him and fear him. He acts as a prophet, a leader that offers a better tomorrow, but from the get go, it's obvious that it's all just a trickery and that the villagers are doomed one way or the other, they're just sheep following a wolf.

At times, I was bored, my mind wandered, and at times I was hypnotized and enthralled, but overall I'm very appreciative of the entire experience. I just need someone to explain to me why this is tagged as a comedy on IMDb?

I noticed many Soviet entries among participants' viewings here; they should be deleted just like I deleted mine.

I'm done with the Romanian list. Reached 58 out of 59, with one unavailable title. The movie exists, but it's nowhere to be found on the internet. It was on youtube some time ago, but got deleted. I guess I just have to wait to be re-uploaded or streamed on national television.

Sounds like laureats of national filmmaking going senile in later stages of life (nothing new). The critics' do not mind listing minor films at the expense of one hit wonders or overlooked directors.
That's why I advocate at least one film per director rather than going all the way through one man's oeuvre. So don't watch latest Kusta or the likes.

Where is the Balkan challenge on that list which I won with 101 points, if I remember well?

3. Nacionalna klasa [National Class Category Up To 785ccm] (1979), Goran Marković- recommended (Yugoslavia)
The film follows Floyd, a self-centered race car driver, who is compelled to act maturely and become a responsible adult for the first time in his 27 years of life, but all he cares about is the race at the end of the week. The film takes place over the course of 8 days. During these 8 days, Floyd has to deal with mechanical issues on his car, his moody girlfriend (moody because of neglect) and the fact that he needs to serve his time in military (something that was obligatory in Yugoslavia at the time, unless one is a college student or medically incapable). The plot is somewhat thin, but it’s more character than story oriented, so that’s not a big deal. The biggest virtues are the dialogues and the soundtrack which is still popular in Ex-Yu countries.
Seen so far - 3Show

2. Closely Watched Trains (1966)Show
Original Title: Ostre sledované vlaky
Director: Jirí Menzel
Country: Czechoslovakia

It’s a coming of age story about a young man who follows in his father’s footsteps and becomes a train dispatcher at a train station, and it’s about his sexual awakening all amidst WW2 and The Third Reich’s occupation. I feel like I need to be Czech(oslovakian) to truly appreciate this film and its subtle jokes. As it stands, it’s decent enough, beautifully shot slice of life with a couple of funny scenes, but I didn't get much out of it.

Hiya, Mario. I watched one of the YouTube uploads in fact. I'm not all that hung up about understanding everything that is said and, anyway, I think this one from Albania is in many ways more a visual accomplishment. Some of the compositions with cranes moving in unison against the sky are terrific (I was reminded at times of Raoul Servais' 'Sirene') and the closing section really ramps up the tension as the weather turns threatening and sour. I'd watch it again with subtitles, for sure, and perhaps I would get something a little different out of it. I liked a lot about it though, as things are!

A lot of intriguing viewings on your part as well. I might watch 'Pokolenie' over the next while and I'm glad you saw and seemed to appreciate Saucan's 'Meandre'. I think it's a captivating and deeply perceptive piece of film-making from 60's Romania.
