Yeah, I know. Try to tell that directly to our Host though, like Roger did above, he will blabber some nonsense about a Russian challenge, and, as usual, will only have ears to the sound of his voice. In fact I find this whole thing artistically insenstive and historically offensive (even in the context of an unimportant challenge like this).

I'm afraid I've been rather lax with my updates on here over the last few weeks. Viewings have mounted up so I'll forego comments for now. Here's what came my way in weeks 3 and 4.

Not all of these might be deemed eligible by Albajos since the rules on eligibility were changed halfway through this challenge. Countries with centuries of links to central and northern Europe are excluded temporarily because they were invaded and occupied by Russia (and by Germany for a while). I mean, really? Frankly, I think Armenia and Azerbaijan should be part of this challenge as well (or perhaps they are thought to be more in Eurasia and covered by another iCM challenge).

Features:
18. 'Egy fiúnak a fele' (1924, Géza von Bolváry) (Hungary) - 9/10 (FTV)
19. 'Ewa chce spac' (1958, Tadeusz Chmielewski) (Poland) - 8/10 (FTV)
20. 'Sterne' (1959, Konrad Wolf) (East Germany/Bulgaria) - 10/10 (RV)
21. 'Kym sa skoncí táto noc' (1966, Peter Solan) (Czechoslovakia) - 9/10 (RV)

'Zabludshiy' (1966, Semyon Tumanov) (U.S.S.R.) - 8.5 or 9/10 (RV) (Rewatched this incredibly touching and beautifully observed tale of return and familial re-integration. Tumanov was Simferopol born and as far as I can make out the story is set in the western outreaches of the Soviet Union. I love the film dearly but I shall exclude it from my final tally since it is a Mosfilm production.)

22. 'Hullumeelsus' (1969, Kaljo Kiisk) (Estonia) - 9/10 (FTV)
23. 'Skrivánci na niti' (1969/1990, Jirí Menzel) (Czechoslovakia) - 8.5/10 (FTV)
24. 'Tsutisopeli' (1971, Nodar Managadze, Shota Managadze) (Georgia) - 9/10 (RV)
25. 'Abols upe' (1974, Aivars Freimanis) (Latvia) - 8/10 (FTV)
26. 'Trois Femmes de Moldavie' (2006, Pavel Cuzuioc) (Austria/Moldova/Romania) - 10/10 (FTV)
27. 'Rewizyta' (2009, Krzysztof Zanussi) (Poland) - 9/10 (RV)
28. 'Darchi Chemtan' (2011, Zaza Urushadze) (Georgia) - 6.5 or 7/10 (RV)
29. 'Róza' (2011, Wojciech Smarzowski) (Poland) - 7.5/10 (FTV)

Shorts:
'Bezucelná procházka' (1930, Alexander Hackenschmied, 8 minutes) (Czechoslovakia) - 10/10 (FTV)
'Svetlo proniká tmou' (1931, Frantisek Pilát, Otakar Vávra, 4 minutes) (Czechoslovakia) - 8/10 (FTV)
'A képzett beteg' (1952, Károly Makk, 24 minutes) (Hungary) - 7/10 (FTV)
'Dva mrazíci' (1953, Jirí Trnka, 11 minutes) (Czechoslovakia) - 9/10 (FTV)
'Skenduolis' (1956, Vytautas Zalakevicius, 10 minutes) (Lithuania) - 7/10 (FTV)
'Tam i tu' (1957, Andrzej Pawlowski, 6 minutes) (Poland) - 8/10 (FTV)
'Akvarel' (1958, Otar Iosseliani, 10 minutes) (U.S.S.R.) - 8/10 (FTV) (This student work from Iosseliani's time at VGIK might justly be excluded, I concede. As the first work of such a renowned film-maker and with the iconic Sofiko Chiaureli present, this remarkable short does probably hold a place in Georgian cinema heritage. I won't include it in my final tally of running-times however, since it was completed in Russia as far as I know.)
'Somnambulicy' (1958, Mieczyslaw Waskowski, 9 minutes) (Poland) - 10/10 (FTV)
'Espressoban' (1959, Ferenc Kardos, 5 minutes) (Hungary) - 8/10 (FTV)
'Gavran' (1973, Nikola Djuric, 6 minutes) (Serbia) - 7.5/10 (FTV)
'Ogan' (1974, Stole Popov, 12 minutes) (Macedonia) - 9/10 (FTV)
'Kuzdok' (1977, Marcell Jankovics, 2 minutes) (Hungary) - 10/10 (FTV)
'Klaabu' (1978, Avo Paistik, 10 minutes) (Estonia) - 7/10 (FTV)
'Blok' (1982, Hieronim Neumann, 9 minutes) (Poland) - 9/10 (FTV)
'Carmen Suite' (1994, Aleksandra Korejwo, 5 minutes) (Poland) - 9/10 (FTV)
'Metruska' (2002, Richard Malatinsky, Martin Preiss, 4 minutes) (Czech Republic) - 8/10 (FTV)
'Millhaven' (2010, Bartek Kulas, 7 minutes) (Poland) - 7.5/10 (FTV)
'Prva jutarnja' (2010, Martina Lukanovic, 7 minutes) (Croatia) - 7/10 (FTV)
'Cutia' (2011, Eugen Damaschin, Serge Zanoaga, 3 minutes) (Moldova) - 6/10 (FTV)
'Snepowina' (2011, Marta Pajek, 14 minutes) (Poland) - 8/10 (FTV)
'Rew Day' (2012, Svilen Dimitrov, 7 minutes) (Bulgaria) - 7.5 or 8/10 (FTV)
'Extreme Fugue for One Voice. Laima' (2013, Ieva Epnere, 5 minutes) (Latvia) - 6.5/10 (FTV & RV)
'Arengufondi ideekonkurss' (2014, A Film Eesti, Helger Gustavson, 1 minute) (Estonia) - 7 or 7.5/10 (FTV)
'Myszochujek' (2014, Kristofa Babaskiego, 6 minutes) (U.K./Poland) - 6.5/10 (FTV)
'Pleaca' (2014, Catalin Palavescu, 26 minutes) (Romania) - 7.5/10 (FTV)
'Te-am asteptat' (music video) (2014, Sergiu Ciorescu, 4 minutes) (Moldova) - 6.5/10 (FTV)
'Cézár' (2015, Balazs Deri, 15 minutes) (Hungary) - 6/10 (FTV)
'Skolotajas nedienas' (2016, Rudolfs Anze, 5 minutes) (Latvia) - 7/10 (FTV)

'Oasis' (2017, Daria Kashcheeva, 2 minutes) (Czech Republic) - 7/10 (FTV)

Weeks 3 and 4 total: 12 feature films and 232 minutes of short films for 15 points in all.

Total after 4 weeks: 35 points

Đurić is native Montenegrin but the production is Dunav Film, Belgrade, Serbia.

I recently saw a fine Montenegrin arthouse short, if someone's interested. (pm me for the link)

Okay, cheers. I'll cede to your regional knowledge. I went with IMDb without double-checking before posting.

Speaking of Dunav, I watched just yesterday a pretty special triumvirate of short documentaries from Zivko Nikolic. The three were 'Zdrijelo', 'Bauk', and 'Ane'. Brilliantly observed, intense, and deeply compelling. The latter two in particular really blew me away. Dunav seems like an interesting film unit to explore. The focus on ethnic identities and traditions seems to have been a central tenet. Very impressed by what little I have seen so far!

Recapitulating some things about this challenge - at the very beginning, the only rule established by the Host, was that there shouldn't be any Russian films listed on our progress lists, and as you can all see, there isn't a single Russian title on my viewing list (every other "rule" the Host created, was set midway through Challenge in a rather mischievous, dishonest way to fit his own dubious agenda, his severe lack of democratic conversation, or disguise his ignorance (and in this case, if he asked, I would have gladly helped him) So, to be very clear, the exact number of films I saw is 85, and I will not accept any other number. If this number isn't acknowledged in the final results, I will not be part of them (either at the top, middle or bottom of it).

On a brighter note, I'm grateful that albajos stepped in to host the Challenge when nobody else did, I had a great month of film viewings with some instant favorites and many pleasant discoveries, I enjoyed immensely perusing the viewing lists of my fellow challengers and engaging in some discussions, and I want to especially thank Mario for helping me find subtitles to two films  . As for me, I'm buying a ticket to Canada, see you there.

11. 4 luni, 3 săptămîni și 2 zile [4 Months, 3 Weeks and 2 Days] (2007), Cristian Mungiu - lukewarm (Romania)

12. Nóz w wodzie [Knife in the Water] (1962), Roman Polanski - lukewarm (Poland)

13. Moartea domnului Lãzãrescu [The Death of Mr. Lazarescu] (2005), Cristi Puiu - lukewarm

*May add write ups later.

That's it from me for this challenge.
Seen so far - 13Show
1. Satantango (1994)Show
Original Title: Sátántangó
Director: Béla Tarr
Country: Hungary

This should be worth at least 3 entries. It definitely isn't a film for everyone, but it will reward a patient viewer. Compiled of mostly long takes, some of them as long as 10 minutes, the film moves at a very slow pace, almost naturalistic, it's like the passage of time for characters is the same for a viewer. For me, these 7 and a half hours felt like a couple of days (I actually did watch it during the course of 2 days). This can be a good or a bad thing, depending on the viewer and his/hers patience. For my taste, it is too slow, tbh, but the themes presented in it, the cinematography and music are all too good and intriguing for me to not enjoy it. It's set in a remote Hungarian village in existential crisis. The farm that the villagers collectively own has dried out, so they have to decide what to do. Greed comes into play and some of them plan to escape with the money that needs to be equally divided. After the news breaks out that Irimias, a charismatic, manipulative former co-worker on the farm (who everyone presumed dead) is returning, everything turns to standstill. Villagers seem to respect him and fear him. He acts as a prophet, a leader that offers a better tomorrow, but from the get go, it's obvious that it's all just a trickery and that the villagers are doomed one way or the other, they're just sheep following a wolf.

At times, I was bored, my mind wandered, and at times I was hypnotized and enthralled, but overall I'm very appreciative of the entire experience. I just need someone to explain to me why this is tagged as a comedy on IMDb?
2. Closely Watched Trains (1966)Show
Original Title: Ostre sledované vlaky
Director: Jirí Menzel
Country: Czechoslovakia

It’s a coming of age story about a young man who follows in his father’s footsteps and becomes a train dispatcher at a train station, and it’s about his sexual awakening all amidst WW2 and The Third Reich’s occupation. I feel like I need to be Czech(oslovakian) to truly appreciate this film and its subtle jokes. As it stands, it’s decent enough, beautifully shot slice of life with a couple of funny scenes, but I didn't get much out of it.
3. National Class Category Up To 785ccm (1979)Show
Original Title: Nacionalna klasa
Director: Goran Marković
Country: Yugoslavia

The film follows Floyd, a self-centered race car driver, who is compelled to act maturely and become a responsible adult for the first time in his 27 years of life, but all he cares about is the race at the end of the week. The film takes place over the course of 8 days. During these 8 days, Floyd has to deal with mechanical issues on his car, his moody girlfriend (moody because of neglect) and the fact that he needs to serve his time in military (something that was obligatory in Yugoslavia at the time, unless one is a college student or medically incapable). The plot is somewhat thin, but it’s more character than story oriented, so that’s not a big deal. The biggest virtues are the dialogues and the soundtrack which is still popular in Ex-Yu countries.
4. On the Milky Road (2016)Show
Original Title: Na mlečnom putu
Director: Emir Kusturica
Country: Serbia

It’s set in the Bosnian war, it follows a soldier who brings milk to his unit from 2 women living nearby (therefor the Milky Road). When a beautiful Italian woman arrives, things get complicated. It has the same old absurdity that Kusturica is known for, but it just doesn’t have the magic of his earlier films. It’s visually quite pleasing (apart from a bad CGI snake) and that’s pretty much the only real positive about it. I don’t think anything in it was very bad either; it just left me cold, all of it and, frankly, I got a bit bored.
5. The Battle of Kosovo (1989)Show
Original Title: Boj na Kosovu
Director: Zdravko Šotra
Country: Yugoslavia

Set in 1389, it tells the story of the Ottoman conquest of Serbia told from the Serbian point of view. Serbian prince Lazar tries to unite the divided Serbian lords to fight off the much larger Ottoman force. It does its job well as a history epic, but it works even better as an allegory for Serbia of today. It's still divided and there are a lot more people like Branković than Obilić, unfortunately. "What we are tomorrow at Kosovo, we will be for eternity."
6. The Meeting Point (1989)Show
Original Title: Sabirni centar
Director: Goran Marković
Country: Yugoslavia

An archeology professor uncovers a hidden tablet in Roman ruins which later turns out to be a passage between two worlds (this one and the afterlife). This isn’t really a spoiler because this is clear from the get go. The professor dies soon after discovery and arrives at The Meeting Point, a place where a bunch people he directly and indirectly knew are waiting for their loved ones. In this strange place, he finds out how these people can’t have peace in their death because of the living. It’s a very idiosyncratic film, with plenty of laugh out loud funny absurdities, like son and father in the afterlife in which the son is 20 years older and they keep arguing over who should be the authoritative figure or dead people giving a wake to a man going back to life by awakening from a coma. It’s surreal, funny, and still somewhat sad and tragic. I loved it.
7. Hanka (1955)Show
Original Title: Hanka
Director: Slavko Vorkapić
Country: Yugoslavia

A tragic love love story among Gypsies in a small village. I might've enjoyed it more had I seen it with a better quality.
8. No End (1985)Show
Original Title: Bez Konca
Director: Krzysztof Kieślowski
Country: Poland

The film explores grief of a woman after her lawyer husband dies. She tries to deal with it through hypnosis and sex, among other things. Meanwhile, in the backdrop, we witness late husband's mentor take late husband's unfinished case and attempt to free his client, who is, for lack of a better term, a political prisoner. Maybe if I understood the political picture of Poland of 1960s, I would've enjoyed it more.
9. Ashes and Diamonds (1958)Show
Original Title: Popiól i diament
Director: Andrzej Wajda
Country: Poland

Right after WW2, a different kind of war awakens in Poland, one between different political ideologies who have their own ideas of what kind of country Poland should become. Maciek volunteers to assassinate an important communist figure, but after he falls in love, he starts having second thoughts. Intriguing concept, but too many dull moments, imo.
10. The High Sun (2015)Show
Original Title: Zvizdan
Director: Dalibor Matanić
Country: Croatia

Set in three alternate decades (90s, 00s, 10s) in an unnamed Croatian village, the film explores influence of ethnic intolerance between Croats and Serbs. All three stories are love stories between a young Croatian man and a young Serbian girl, in all three stories the same actors play different set of characters. It has very beautiful cinematography and the powerful first story set right before the break of war was very powerful, but the 2 subsequent stories didn't have quite the same impact.
11. 4 Months, 3 Weeks and 2 DaysShow
Original Title: 4 luni, 3 săptămîni și 2 zile
Director: Cristian Mungiu
Country: Romania
12. Knife in the Water (1962)Show
Original Title: Nóz w wodzie
Director: Roman Polanski
Country: Poland
13. The Death of Mr. Lazarescu (2005)Show
Original Title: Moartea domnului Lãzãrescu
Director: Cristi Puiu
Country: Romania
Films I plan to watch
The truth is you're Donny, and I'm Walter. But I'm tryin', Ringo, I'm tryin' real hard to be The Dude.

Is this really the end, or others just decided to stop it? Nowhere says when the deadline is.

I take the end time to mean midnight wherever the individual might be. I'm hoping to get to two or three more this evening if I have the time.

So that's it! I enjoyed my month of viewings a great deal. I know you and I have something of a difference in opinion about what constitutes/constituted eastern Europe but at the end of the day it's the films that matter. So many wonderful new discoveries came my way during June that served to enhance my awareness and my ever-growing appreciation for the often under-explored and under-valued cinematic heritages of this region as a whole. So, thanks for stepping up and hosting. It was a lot of fun taking part!

Kur patiesiba is Latvian (but says 'Russia' because they weren't independent in 1913); Grešnica bez greha, Ruke ljubičastih daljina and Pioniri maleni are Serbian; 'Milenky starého kriminálníka, Lupič and Ať žije republika are from Czech Republic; Keby som mal pušku, Svatá Jana and Omša are Slovak; Jasenovac and Maska crvene smrti are Croatian.

Thanks for the input on the 1913 film. I hummed and hawwed over whether to include it initially. I will count it now and leave it up to albajos to adjudicate on it. From what he's said, I take it that he would exclude any Latvian films from before 1918, allow those from 1918 to early 1940, disallow those from later in 1940, allow those from 1941 to 1944, and disallow those made from 1944 to 1990-1991. A complex situation indeed!

Wasn't the Czech Republic not instituted until later in the 1960s? In the cases of the Czech, Slovak, and Croatian films is it considered insensitive to use the blanket terms ''Czechoslovakia'' and ''Yugoslavia'' nowadays when referring to individual productions? I would always wish to be as accurate and sensitive as possible in my assignations.
That's all, folks!

No, WW2 marked the beginning of Czechoslovakia. Anyway, you had older films under the term 'Czech Republic' so why not. Because of all that confusion, I tend to assign films to now-existing entities.

I was under the impression that it went all the way back to 1918. Probably need to brush up on my history!

Sorry but you were right. Because Yugoslavia existed since 1918 as well.

As I said, I use present borders to define the origin of films.

Yeah, I think that makes quite a lot of sense. I'm not against it at all but I do like to make note of the political climate and realities that prevailed at the time a film was made. Perhaps something like ''Croatia/Yugoslavia'' or ''Slovakia/Czechoslovakia'' might be the best and most sensitive way to describe the countries of production in such instances.

Just go with "Upper Hungary" then. :P

Hahahaha! Nice resurrecting of this challenge, Mario. It still has legs. Might have to think about dipping my toes back in the water.
Yeah and don't you think Yugoslavian films are good to avoid. I watched almost everything already, and these are just peripheral cinema or new stuff.

Ah, yeah. I know. Actually very much admire the 3 or 4 I've seen from Galic so I'm intrigued by this 1976 one in spite of your relatively low rating.
That's all, folks!

You should better watch what I could recommend you, than random stuff. Otherwise you'll lose patience and turn to something else, and who knows if you'd ever check some jewels. Like this one, for example:

Thanks for the random recommendation. Does certainly look good. I very much like getting tips on what I should seek out but, equally, I enjoy going by instinct and intuition. I don't avoid stuff just because it seems peripheral in the wider scheme of things.

Ok then, just to inform you that everything in this film was true life story. They even asked his real father to play but he refused like "f_ you", and then died meanwhile. So they starred another man who was professional actor.

The whole fantasy sequence in the final chapter (which never happened in reality) must be the best part.

This Dalmatian low-budget flick surprised everyone at the Pula Film Festival and won first prize for best Croatian feature in 2012; prior to this, the crew of three (actors + director) came to the festival in a van, no journalists paid much attention to them as if they were illegals, yet they easily beat other films which all spent ten times their budget.
