This is a fun idea. It might motivate me to watch more. I'll contribute when I can, but I haven't had much time to watch movies lately.

Since there are a lot more shorts, I'll keep track of what I've seen in two buckets. Count for shorts will be number of hours, not number of films.

1. När Kapten Grogg skulle porträtteras (Victor Bergdahl)
Features (0)Show
Shorts (0)Show
När Kapten Grogg skulle porträtteras (Victor Bergdahl) - 4 minutes

I have 17 unchecked 1917 movies on official lists, which surprises me, I thought it'd be less.

I'll definitely keep an eye open for this challenge, but I doubt I'll find many checks having already checked 200 films from 1917.

It took me over 6 months to find anything from 1917 I hadn't seen yet! And it was only a 9-minute short film from Sweden called Calles nya kläder (1917). Light chase-slapstick'er of little importance. Hopefully I'll find more before the year is up so I at least have one real check for this challenge.

Yey, finally in the game! Thanks to films from the rather uninteresting Swedish film maker Georg af Klercker and one from the interesting Italian director Febo Mari:

1a. Mysteriet natten till den 25:e (1917, Georg af Klercker) - 3/10
1b. I mörkrets bojor [In the Fetters of Darkness] (1917, Georg af Klercker) - 3/10
2. Revelj (1917, Georg af Klercker) - 3/10
3. Mellan liv och död [Between Life and Death] (1917, Georg af Klercker) - 2/10
4. Il Fauno [The Faun] (1917, Febo Mari) - 6/10

Seen this year so far:

1. Il fauno (Febo Mari, 1917) 6/10
2. La femme française pendant la guerre (Alexandre Devarennes, 1917) 7/10 [37 min]
2. The Butcher Boy (Roscoe Fatty Arbuckle, 1917) 4/10 [30 min]
3. Are Waitresses Safe? (Victor Heerman & Hampton Del Ruth, 1917) 5/10 [20 min]
3. Hanawa Hekonai meitô no maki / The Dull Sword (Junichi Kouchi, 1917) 6 /10 [2 min]
3. Frauenarbeit im ersten Weltkrieg (unknown, 1917) 6/10 [10 min]
42min/60min

Saw it last year, but I hope Blue Jeans (John H. Collins, 1917) becomes available online at some point. Very highly recommended.

La femme française pendant la guerre is available here (French only):

Frauenarbeit im ersten Weltkrieg is here (no subs needed)

Finally a decent-size new findings to what's a fairly obscure year in cinema history considering it was toward the end of the Great War, which means resources wasn't exactly going to entertainment projects and not that much got major distribution to be rediscovered years later in strange places.

5. Young Mother Hubbard (1917, Arthur Berthelet) - 5/10
--- Cute. One of many orphan stories that's come to life on the silver screen. This one with 8 year old Mary McAllister taking care of her young family like a mother while social groups tries to split them up. You know the littles ones will end up charming someone to take them in and that results in a lot of wholesome fun from a silent film rarely seen.

6. The Woman God Forgot (1917, Cecil B. DeMille) - 5/10
--- The Woman God Forgot (1917) is probable the closest we get to the Cecil B. DeMille we know from the 1930s. This 1917 film reminds so much of Cleopatra (1934) and other costume dramas from that period, so it's clear he already had a feel for that kind of films early on in his career. Looks quite ambitious too, but lacks perhaps a finesse in the storytelling to really engage as much as the elaborate designs and costumes, but this was a clear sign of things to come from DeMille.

7. A Bid for Fortune (1917, Sidney Morgan) - 5/10
--- A British crime story of the silent variety for those that enjoy the type of fiction as the French were so good at delivering in the silent era. You know, like Fantômas (1913), Les vampires (1915) & Judex (1916). Perhaps not as creative, but it started out in a very satisfying way, even if it didn't totally deliver on it's potential as the crime story progressed. Still plenty of adventure and mysterious nonsense along the way.
