140. My Bloody Banjo (2015) 6/10

After sustaining damage to his genitals and being roundly mocked at work for it, a disgruntled office worker summons his evil imaginary friend to take bloody revenge. Hilarious at times even though it doesn't fully exploit its outlandsih premise. Highly enjoyable either way.

#Night 29#

71. I Am the Pretty Thing That Lives in the House (Oz Perkins, 2016) (2nd viewing) 8-/10

See last night for review.

Thrill-O-Meter: 1 out of 10 screams.

72. Chained (Jennifer Chambers Lynch as Jennifer Lynch, 2012) 4/10

Thrill-O-Meter: 0 out of 10 screams for a film made by the talent who gave us "Boxing Helena" (never forget!).

73. Earth vs the Spider / The Spider (Bert I. Gordon, 1958) 4-/10

Thrill-O-Meter: 0 out of 10 screaming spiders...huh, what?

Didn't finish: Horror Express (Eugenio Martín, 1972) [18 min]
Didn't finish: Torture Chamber (Dante Tomaselli, 2013) [10 min]
Didn't finish: The Rambler (Calvin Reeder, 2013) [11 min]

I know what you saw last night!Show
#Night 1#

1. House of Mortal Sin (Pete Walker, 1976) 2/10

Thrill-O-Meter: 0 out of 10 screams for a crazily self-righteous priest in a very conventional British B-movie that in 2016 also feels hopelessly dated (I mean an old priest having the hots for the adult women who visit his confession booth instead of for the altar boys who ring his bell and scrub his cross, what a ridiculous notion!).

2. Green Room (Jeremy Saulnier, 2015) 6-/10

Thrill-O-Meter: 0 out of 10 Heil Hitlers for a reasonably unclichéd but cinematically bland and ineffective non-horror film.

3. Goodbye Gemini (Alan Gibson, 1970) 6/10

Thrill-O-Meter: 0 out of 10 swinging shrieks for a pretty intriguing and promising buildup, but instead of the horror getting started in the second half it just slowly fizzles out into almost complete irrelevance.

#Night 2#

4. 劇場版　零　ゼロ / Fatal Frame (Mari Asato, 2014) 8/10

Thrill-O-Meter: 1 out of 10 teary-eyed shudders for its eeriness that stems from desires that are as confounding as they are agonizing, so much so that they are manifested as ghostly visions and actions caused by forces beyond people's own will.

5. Event Horizon (Paul W.S. Anderson, 1997) (2nd+ viewing) 7-/10

Thrill-O-Meter: 0 out of 10 self-molesting screams for squandering a promising horror concept with (too few) descriptions of the unspeakable horrors awaiting on the other side of the universe, which have all the eloquence of a 10-year-old's essay about Hell scribbled down in a hurry while sitting in the bus on the way to school, the best of which probably still was "where we're going, we won't need eyes to see" (where's Lovecraft when you need him?), instead this action sci-fi film mostly opts for visual depictions that are equally as sophisticated (maggots, cut up bodies, maggots, fountains of blood, and maggots) and filling a lot of runtime with what's basically "Solaris goes slasher horror".

6. 31 (Rob Zombie, 2016) 2/10

RIP Rob Zombie - Thank you for 'House of 1000 Corpses'. I will miss you.

Thrill-O-Meter: 0 out of 10 hillbilly hollas because unfortunately screams of horrific disappointment don't count.

Didn't finish: Spasmo (Umberto Lenzi, 1974) [7 min]

#Night 3#

7. Nightmares (Joseph Sargent 1983) 3+/10

Thrill-O-Meter: 0 out of 10 Teufelsnagetiere (devil's rodents) for having f-ck all to do with nightmares, unless silly little stories with conclusions that can't even be said to have some kind of moral can be called nightmares.

8. Strasek, der Vampir (Theodor Boder, 1982) 4/10

https://vimeo.com/ondemand/strasek

Thrill-O-Meter: 0 out of 10 hollow screams for being like a (completely vampire-less) Swiss Dreyer film...after Dreyer watched Herzog's 'Nosferatu' a hundred times and then proceeded to make an ultra-low budget film with nothing to say or even really a story to tell but figured that a relentlessly tootling synthy score would be enough to make it worthwhile.

#Night 4#

9. The Truth About Emanuel (Francesca Gregorini, 2013) 6+/10

Thrill-O-Meter: 0 out of 10 moans for a sad psycho-drama about loss with some suspense/mystery elements - definitely not a horror film (for this I didn't find it sad enough), even its thriller thrills are pretty mild, but the damage is done.

10. February / The Blackcoat's Daughter (Oz Perkins, 2015) 9-/10

Thrill-O-Meter: 5 out of 10 screams for leaving me in a constant state of anticipation; for totally delivering in the second half in completely unpredictable ways; for showing the murderous dangers of having a one-track-mind; for striking a brilliant balance between groundedness and unsettling mysteriousness; for evoking a certain loneliness by making clear that even if other people are friendly and helpful to each other everyone is basically on their own; for knowing that there are no villains but that every person has issues; for not even making me wonder why the perpetrator did what the perpetrator did but for instead making me accept that it is about showing that you can never know what goes on in another person, yet once it does get a little into the perpetrator's motivations it finds a beautifully non-conclusive middle-ground between psychology and spirituality/demonic possession; and for being as tragic as it is unsettling - while the reactions so far seem to be very mixed I am confident that this one still has to find its audience and will be a film with a lot of lasting power, and if nothing goes wrong I'm sure that we will hear many more great things from Oz Perkins in the future.

11. The Incredible Melting Man (William Sachs, 1977) 1/10

Thrill-O-Meter: 0 out of 10 ATCHKAs for being incredibly melty.

#Night 5#

12. A Thief in the Night (Donald W. Thompson, 1972) 7/10

Thrill-O-Meter: 1 out 10 preachings about God for being dumb yet sort of thrilling raptureploitation; for feeling like a charmingly home-made community effort that is not only pretty solid but in its own small way has ambitious filmmaking that is strangely suggestive (especially great: the mindful match cut editing and the variety of music); for its trippy ending that suggests an eternal hell for the ones that have been left behind; for the time.....is near.

13. Hangman (Adam Mason, 2015) 7-/10

Thrill-O-Meter: 1 out 10 silent creepers living in your house for taking voyeurism to the next (more immediate) cinematic level (in fact being the only film I can think of where voyeurism is used in any decently unsettling way); and for the final section that taken on its own is nothing special but which I found surprisingly effective, the accumulation of this family's mundane everyday life footage did something to me without my realizing it and consequently infused this event in the end that we have seen before a thousand times in movies with resonance.

14. The Beast with Five Fingers (Robert Florey, 1946) 2/10

Thrill-O-Meter: 0 out of 10 fears, but ten tears for poor Peter Lorre giving his all and wasting his energy on this stinker.

15. The Cottage (Paul Andrew Williams, 2008) 6/10

Thrill-O-Meter: 0 out of 10 screams for what is to an extent a British variant of 'From Dusk Till Dawn'.

Hilarit-E-Meter: 2 out of 10 laughs.

Didn't finish: The Forest (Jason Zada, 2016) [19 min]
Didn't finish: Yeogo goedam / Whispering Corridors (Ki-hyeong Park, 1998) [11 min]

#Night 6#

16. Le loup des Malveneur / The Wolf of the Malveneurs (Guillaume Radot, 1943) 3+/10

Thrill-O-Meter: 0 out of 10 screams for having no Nazis (or even wolves really).

17. A Distant Thunder / A Thief in the Night II: A Distant Thunder (Donald W. Thompson, 1978) 4/10

Thrill-O-Meter: 0 out of 10 screams.

#Night 7#

18. Gremlins (Joe Dante, 1984) (2nd+ viewing) 5+/10

Thrill-O-Meter: 0 out of 10 cackles by green monsters who just wanna have fun for a film that alludes to so many possible allegorical readings (a cautionary tale about being a responsible pet owner/parent, suburban paranoia, xenophobia, consumerism, the dangers of technology, modern man messing with nature), but none of which stick, so it ends up being a hollow experience full of random references to pop culture, classic movies and Spielberg's and Dante's own work as a substitute for actual jokes - possibly the first major production guilty of this(?), so thanks very much, 'Gremlins'.

19. Phase IV (Saul Bass, 1974) (2nd viewing) 8/10 (from 9)

Thrill-O-Meter: 1 out of 10 high-pitched ant screams for some people would rob their mother for ants, rat snitch on one another for ants, sometimes kids get murdered for ants, so before we go any further I want my ants!

[6 min]. Phase IV - "lost ending" (Saul Bass, 1974) (3rd viewing) 9/10

[5 min]. Total Skull AKA Rob and Sheri Moon Zombie Fan: The Fan Movie (Josh Hasty, 2011) 2/10

Didn't finish: The Hollow / The Burning Curse (Sheldon Wilson, 2015) [12 min]
Didn't finish: Backcountry (Adam MacDonald, 2014) [26 min]
Didn't finish: Southbound (various, 2015) [8 min]

#Night 8#

20. Blue Movie (Alberto Cavallone, 1978) 1/10

Thrill-O-Meter: 0 out of 10 rapes.

21. 青い沼の女 / Blue Lake Woman / Aoi numa no onna (Akio Jissôji / Akio Jissoji, 1986) 6/10

Thrill-O-Meter: 0 out of 10 screams for this supernatural melodrama shot in typically distinctive Akio Jissôji fashion with striking-looking (video) images.

22. The Incredibly Strange Creatures Who Stopped Living and Became Mixed-Up Zombies!!? (Ray Dennis Steckler & camera operator Vilmos Zsigmond, 1964) (2nd viewing) 3/10 (from 1)

Thrill-O-Meter: Eh...well, at least it isn't formulaic.

23. Lights Out (David F. Sandberg, 2016) 5+/10

Thrill-O-Meter: 0 out of 10 cries for help in the dark for finding a way for visualizing fear of the dark (solution: a perpetually backlit naked witch with anger issues) even though the story has zero to do with fear of the dark; and for fickle electricity.

#Night 9#

24. The Day of the Triffids (Steve Sekely & and David Lynch cinematographer Freddie Francis, 1962) 4/10

Thrill-O-Meter: 0 out of 10 screams for a nice collection of horrifying "what if..." scenarios (alien invasion through killer plants, most of the population going blind, an airplane "trapped" in the air because everyone is blind, escaped convicts taking over a crowded mansion of blind "womenfolk" to help party it down like an American band,...) turned into a typical laughable 50's sci-fi B-movie (even though it was already the 60's) that is no less dumb than the average MST3k movie but thanks to keeping things varied and some decent production values it isn't painfully dull at all.

Hilarit-E-Meter: 1 out of 10 laughs.

25. The Watcher in the Woods (John Hough & Vincent McEveety, 1980) 5/10

Thrill-O-Meter: 0 out of 10 screams for a very typical (but perfectly watchable) "ghost-haunts-female-character-to-find-peace-in-the-afterlife" horror movie with the distinction of having a convenient super-happy sappy ending that goes way beyond supernatural to veer straight into fantasy territory, but it's a Disney movie, so what else could you expect?

Didn't finish: The Lost Skeleton of Cadavra (Larry Blamire, 2001) [11 min]
Didn't finish: True Love Ways (Mathieu Seiler, 2015) [19 min + ending]
Didn't finish: From the Dark (Conor McMahon, 2014) [30 min + ending]

26. Friend Request (Simon Verhoeven, 2016) 7/10

Thrill-O-Meter: 2 out of 10 *screams* for a sensibly told thriller that very much gets the overlap and interplay between online and offline life and excellently translates it into cinematic storytelling, unfortunately I wasn't quite on the same page as the film with the supernatural elements that were introduced later on, because while those fairly generic "horror hallucination" sequences worked OK enough on their own I kept looking for rational explanations (the fact that the cameras recorded different things than what the characters saw seemed to support that reading), but as became clear by the end, the film fully embraced the supernatural angle. So, I think there was a considerably better film in there (in the down-to-earth part) but unlike in the thematically similar 'Unfriended' (overall they are very different films, though) there unfortunately isn't a successful synthesis of relevant themes connected to social media issues and the plot's supernatural elements...but this is still my favorite German-produced English-language horror movie set in California that was shot in South Africa with Australian, British and American actors. Easily.

27. The Cat and the Canary (Paul Leni, 1927) 5+/10

Thrill-O-Meter: 0 out of 10 silent screams for a nice creepy castle, which in combination with the framing that gives an unusually large amount of headroom, emphasizing the size of the rooms, does half the work; for the quite creative opening sequences that especially called to mind Epstein's "House of Usher" film for me - and while the whole thing runs out of steam pretty soon it maintains a minimum of atmosphere even through all the shenanigans.

28. The Unearthly (Boris Petroff, 1957) 1+/10

Thrill-O-Meter: 0 out of 10 "Time for go to bed."

#Night 11#

29. 地下幻燈劇画 少女椿 / Midori / rough translation of original title: "Underground Projected Dramatic Pictures: Maiden Camellia" (Hiroshi Harada, 1992) 7-/10

Thrill-O-Meter: 1 out of 10 mild screams of despair purely for the intense ending that doesn't hold anything back, having endured and gotten through misery and extreme abuse for some time without killing herself thanks to an unwarranted hope of things getting better, the protagonist finally gets to have some very tangible hope for a brighter future, having this bubble burst ironically is worse than all the lows she experienced hitherto, creating an intense feeling of the whole world being against her, like everyone has always hated and deceived her, which is translated into an ending that brought to mind the devastating conclusion of Mulholland Dr. for me.

30. The Ninth Gate (Roman Polanski, 1999) (2nd viewing) 6/10

Thrill-O-Meter: 0 out of 10 screams for a whole lotta disappointing nothing.

31. The Vatican Tapes (Mark Neveldine, 2015) 3+/10

Thrill-O-Meter: 0 out of 10 "Your mother sucks cocks in hell".

Didn't finish: The Pact (Nicholas McCarthy, 2012) [11 min]

#Night 12#

32. Histoires extraordinaires / Tales of Mystery and Imagination (by Edgar Allan Poe) / Spirits of the Dead (Roger Vadim & Louis Malle & Federico Fellini, 1968) 8-/10

1) "Metzengerstein": 8
2) "William Wilson": 7
3) "Toby Dammit": 7-

Thrill-O-Meter: 2 out of 10 screams
- for poignant tales about simple unfulfillment commanding ones life, told with great nuance and cinematic richness in what is the second-most-brilliant horror anthology that I recall seeing.

33. Teenagers from Outer Space (Tom Graeff, 1959) 3+/10

Thrill-O-Meter: 0 out of 10 moody teens throwing a tantrum due to hormonal imbalance even though they are aliens played by grownups, but they certainly act like teens.

34. The Invitation (Karyn Kusama, 2015) 9-/10

Thrill-O-Meter: 4 out of 10 screams
- for capturing so much of the weirdness, group dynamics and strange feelings that emerge during dinner parties;
- for feeling like identification figure Tom Hardy is surrounded by soap opera actors even though there is neither a Tom Hardy nor is everyone else a soap opera actor (in other words for having you wonder if you are the weird one or if everyone else is...or to quote the trailer: "A near perfect balance between suspicion and paranoia);
- for getting into an uncomfortable situation, then having all your suspicions confirmed but now you are stuck in the middle of this situation regardless and you have to recalculate everything you thought true and deal with it just like everyone else;
- for its character arc that ends up being an ironically painful and traumatic catharsis to what was originally a painful and traumatic experience;
- for its final punch creating a sense of an impending apocalypse.

- for showing that everyone is looking for answers, and religion makes everything so easy;
- for showing that everyone likes having a purpose and that in times of emotional distress one often tries to either ignore it or tackle it indirectly, and helping a child in need who is the daughter of a famous and rich actress comes in very handy;

134. American Horror Story S3E4-5

135. Eight Legged Freaks (2002)
While there's some dumb fun to be had here, the lame CGI spiders create a total lack of stakes for any of the characters to ever feel like they're in danger. For a better movie that could genuinely generate chills, see Arachnophobia. I also thought the whole 'searching for gold' subplot was pretty unnecessary.

136. Hell Night (1981)
While I expected this to be a fairly routine slasher, it ended up having a bit of a Tobe Hooper TCM vibe. Linda Blair also never hurts to have around. After all was said and done, it was still fairly routine though.

137. Lovely Molly (2011)
I thought this did a pretty good job of keeping the audience guessing although the narrative was almost too opaque at times to hold attention. Lodge did a very good job of selling the crazy and while there was little in the way of true scares, Sanchez did a much better job here than in Blair Witch Project of generating an evil atmosphere, although the remnants of his previous success with the camcorder footage seemed unnecessary.

138. Excision (2012)
This was a pretty graphic, darkly comic picture that gives off strong vibes of other movies in this vein like May and American Mary. The main character is more believably outcast than many movies of this type with just enough of a self-perception to leave the ending in question.

139. Cockneys vs Zombies (2012)
Yes, this is a pretty blatant Shaun of the Dead ripoff. Does that mean it can't be fun? Of course not. It still has some pretty good laughs and remains pretty entertaining the whole time. I thought it was quite a bit better than the much higher ranked Dance of the Dead.

1. Hellraiser - #38 on TSZDT, my highest unchecked movie on the list, 665th check on TSZDT - The beginning has a Stephen King or Rosemary's Baby kind of vibe. I'm usually not into stuff like this, but it turned out to be okay. 6/10
2. The Frighteners #272 on TSZDT, 666th check on TSZDT - Was alright, had outrageously exaggerated characters, probably Peter Jackson's idea of what Americans were. CGI was just beginning. The best thing was Michael J. Fox. Could have been a lot worse without him. Trini Alvarado was good too, an underrated actress. 5/10
3. Psycho remake (1998, Gus van Sant) I've been avoiding this remake for 18 years. I was impressed by the Story of Film documentary. One of the best documentaries ever and it just happens to be on film so I wanted to complete that list. Vince Vaughn seems pretty miscast with his fake laugh. Awfully pointless, but some good acting from the others. Dare I say good directing. I think the first one was directed well enough. Might be a little biased, since Alfred Hitchcock is my favorite director. In memory of Alfred Hitchcock at the end. LOL 5/10
4. Hocus Pocus - TSZDT #865, 667th check on TSZDT - kinda not my thing, that's why I haven't seen it sooner. Vinessa Shaw and Thora Birch were good. I guess I like those characters more than the witches. n/a
5. Dead Silence - 668th check on TSZDT, Kinda dumb. was expecting more. Still not horrible. I don't think the actors were bad like the comments on ICM suggest, but I just didn't find the puppets that scary. 6/10
6. Resident Evil - TSZDT #273, 669th check on TSZDT - Wow, this was horrible. I've avoided it for 14 years, because I was not interested in anything relating to this movie. However, I gave it a chance. I didn't like the video game style of the movie. Come on. It's a movie, not a video game. Adapt it that way. Not into Milla, less than enthused by the director, really dumb story. One of the worst ever easily. 1/10
7. Paranormal Activity 2 #610 on TSZDT, 670th check on TSZDT - I don't like the series. This wasn't the worst ever, but nor is this really impressive. I guess I'd give it 3/10.
8. Vamp (1986) 2 lists, #984 on TSZDT, #671st check on TSZDT - ok, but not really into college boys looking for trouble, Grace Jones was good though
9. Evil Dead (2013) #309 on TSZDT, #672nd check on TSZDT, not that great, but some ok moments, unnecessary to have made, though 5/10
10. Scream 3 (2000) #671 on TSZDT, 673rd check on TSZDT Was pretty funny and enjoyable. RIP Wes Craven.
11. Scream 4 (2011) #755 on TSZDT, 674th check on TSZDT. Just seemed like more of the same, not done as amusing as Scream 3. Nice cameos from more recent stars, but…it didn't cut it. Still, RIP Wes Craven.
12. The Greasy Strangler (2016) 2/10 - Took a chance and saw it with my friend. Most of the movie, I thought I'd be rating it 3/10. But it was bad. The only things worth watching it for: the costumes and the poor delivery.
13. The Sacrament (Ti West) 6/10 #849 on TSZDT, 675th check on TSZDT. Well, this was okay. It was filmed in a very different style from a horror film. Almost like a docu-drama. I am familiar with the Jonestown Massacre and somewhat liked this version of it.
14. Premature Burial (Roger Corman) - Finally got around to seeing it. Am not usually impressed by Corman. This is like a low-budget attempt at making something look better than it is. But beautiful actresses and costumes can't really save a so-so plot and execution.
15. Vacancy - #627 on TSZDT, #677th check on TSZDT. Didn't like the way the husband and wife were fighting in the beginning. I believe Luke Wilson called Kate Beckinsale a "bitch". Totally unlikeable characters. You are almost rooting against the characters. Anyway….5/10
16. Day of the Woman aka I spit on your grave (1978) # 296 on TSZDT, 678th check on TSZDT - not a huge fan of it, some of the end was okay, but I would recommend you miss it overall. 2/10
17. Dracula: Pages from a Virgin's Diary - Watched this on Amazon Prime the other day, interesting concept, but very one note. 5/10
18. Gin gwai/The Eye - overall, pretty interesting. Not as good as Ringu, but hey.
19. Versus - 5.2/10 (Ryûhei Kitamura) Well, okay. It felt a little bit repetitive to me. Lots of fighting, but not much substance.
20. Godzilla: Final Wars 4.5/10 (Ryûhei Kitamura) Not great and way too long.
21. Midnight Meat Train - 4/10 not really into it. Real actors, but pretty dumb and has dated sexist lines just like the ICM comments say.
22. Paranormal Activity 3 - #558 on TSZDT, 682nd check on TSZDT, wow I can't stand this series. It's lazy, it's edited badly. It's supposed to be bad, but that's just what it is, very horrible. 3/10
23. Spiral/Uzumaki (2000) #548 on TSZDT, 683rd check on TSZDT. Pretty interesting imagery. OK film. 6/10
24. Mimic - #616 on TSZDT, #684th check on TSZDT. Ok, but not among Guillermo del Toro's best work. It was like he was forced to work within the studio system and wasn't able to fully express himself.
25. Murder Party #923 on TSZDT, #685th check on TSZDT, started out sort of okay. Good production value at first, I thought. The actors are ok at best and the dialogue tries too hard. If there's a positive thing that can be taken away from it, it's that you can probably decide to make a horror film and it will probably be better than this.
25. The Innkeepers (2011) 356 on TSZDT, #686th, Kinda liked it a tad more than Ti West's other film, The Sacrament, "recognized" a younger Lena Dunham in a scene.
26. The Crazies remake - #357on TSZDT, #687th check on TSZDT - This didn't do anything for me. I thought the characters were unrelatable and I was so totally not into it.
27. Le pacte des loups/The Brotherhood of the Wolf (2001) #443 on TSZDT, 678th check on TSZDT - This film featured lots of great actors and had the style of a regular drama despite the other elements. Really enjoyed seeing Edith Scob, Emilie Dequenne, Jeremie Renier, Benoit Magimel, even Monica Bellucci.
28. Dead of Night/Deathdream - Really great premise, really decent execution, fun watch.
29. Shock Waves - eh.
30. Madman - ok.
31. A Monster Calls - decent animation, I feel that it channeled Wizard of Oz and some other movies. It didn't feel very fresh, but there were lots of great actors, a couple of scares, some great effects.
32. Mother's Day - too tortuous for me
33. Lake Placid - horror movie with big stars and no heart
34. Halloween H20: 20 Years Later (1998) OK sequel with some familiar "faces"
35. Eight Legged Freaks (2002) Funny movie/alright.
36. Fright Night remake - totally unnecessary, but ok 5/10
37. Friday the 13th (2009) remake - In bad taste, not necessary, not interesting, not worthwhile, wish I could rate it higher than 1/10 but I'm voting my conscience
38. Tusk - 6/10 - Finally got around to seeing this. It really is pretty messed up. Well done, but so messed up.
39. Housebound - pretty ok
40. Splinter - checked it out on Amazon Prime - was not that great, barely ok, but some interesting effects
41. Oculus - #626 on TSZDT - I thought it had pretty bad acting. I didn’t really like it.
42. The Children - wow, the kids were horrible actors. Otherwise, it was pretty decent (not a joke and I know the kids were a huge part of it, but next time please will someone give them acting lessons?)
43. UK: Under the Shadow (Babak Anvari) Totally creepy in a good way. Really well done. 8/10
44. A Field in England - Not my style and not impressive
45. Lady in White (1988) Kinda okay.
46. Constantine - Lots of exaggerated situations. Liked some of it, had a pretty good cast.
47. The Undertaker and His Pals - listed as a comedy, horror on IMDB. was it meant to be funny? Maybe. Lots of laughs. Good costumes and stuff. Easy to have great clothes in the mid-1960s, though. Overall, bad, but a fun kind of bad at least. 5/10
48. The Tomb of Ligeia 6/10 What was up with Vincent Price’s glasses?
49. Schatten - Eine nächtliche Halluzination/Warning Shadows (1923) YT link on ICM - great cinematography, ok story

88. Lyle (2014) 5.5/10

This is more psychological horror, not terribly well-executed but not too bad for the budget it appears to have had.

90. The Secret of Crickley Hall s01e02 (2012) 6.5/10

50. There’s Nothing Out There (1991) More funny than scary, weird stuff, weird glasses, weird lasers, etc. OKay….. 4/10

66. Sleepaway Camp (1983) 5/10
That ending sure is something. I should have expected it, I had all the pieces, but it still came as a surprise. The ending aside, this is a pretty mediocre slasher with a lot stupid moments and barely passable acting. It's full of silly moments that only work in a comedy, but the editing tries for something darker and fails, leaving the overall tone in an ineffective middle ground.

67. De dødes tjern (1958) 8/10
More of a mystery thriller than a horror, but it's a very good one. The characters are all interesting in their own ways and the film wastes no time in setting up the intrigue. It's fun watching them interact and unravel the plot while the fear of death hangs over them. The ending explanation is very much of its time, in a way I don't like, but at least the narrative resolution is good. It's a fun film that wouldn't be out of place for Noirvember either. As an aside I want to note that while the Scope B&W cinematography is gorgeous, the shimmer every time there's a pan drives me crazy.

68. Maniac (1980) 2/10
Gory killings interspersed with bland introspection into the killer. This is so damn boring as it seems to intentionally avoid any hint of comedy and also any meaningful character development beyond giving some thin justification for the lead's psychology.

69. Hannibal (2001) 7/10
After watching so many B-movies this stands out in its slickness and scope. The performances, even if no one is truly giving their all, are strong enough to carry an uneven plot for over two hours that feel much brisker than Maniac's 85 minutes. It's not a standout film, and pales in comparison to Silence of The Lambs, but on its own merits it's a pretty entertaining look at two bizarre Lecter relationships. The final 20 minutes are an amazing piece of horror, though. The whole thing is worth watching just for the payoff of that sequence.

70. Motel Hell (1980) 3/10
If this was played as a comedy it might work, but despite everything that happens pointing that way it's all played bizarrely straight. It's not silly enough to be campy fun but nowhere near competent or coherent enough to take seriously. There are a couple of memorable ideas and scenes, but the film holds back from embracing and exploiting their potential.

Made the Top 200 on TSZDT! My quest for Top 200 on every list by the end of the year is looking good.

Ravenous (1999) - All these character actors together in this western setting reminded me of The Hateful Eight and Bone Tomahawk. Enjoyed the first half. Perhaps it deserves a rewatch in the future. The music was puzzling. I didn't know how to feel. - 5/10
The Wicker Man (1973) - Not as goofy as I thought it'd be. More like a fucked up Halloween special of Heartbeat. Also, mind you, I haven't seen the remake.. YET! - 7/10

Aww I love Maniac. I really liked that they cast someone 'gross' as the killer, coz usually they cast attractive dudes and it kind of sexualizes everything. So this way it made his actions more grotesque. I also related to the main dude in some ways.

Yeah I like that choice, and the actor isn't terrible, though he's not good either, but there's just nothing for the character to do besides kill. Sure he talks to his dolls and later talks about his dead mother, but it all feels tacked on and empty.

25 - The Mist (Good movie. But the praised ending was a a cheap shot. And the Fog is better, I think. Still, happy this is on the TSZTD-list and happy this list is around. We should make a new rule: Every time someone makes a rant about it here, it should get a dozen additional entries).

26 - Deat Heat. (Great shit. Simply Incredible. Wow. Would have ranked high on my action list.)

27 - Class of Nuke 'Em High (Was ok. A bit too much over the the top)

50. There’s Nothing Out There (1991) More funny than scary, weird stuff, weird glasses, weird lasers, etc. OKay….. 4/10
Hey, this was one of my first splatter movies. I never forgot the scene where the one girl takes her own arm off the ground and uses it as a weapon to hit the killer on the head with.

3-10. Stranger Things (2016, eight episodes)
Pretty good, plenty of good fake nostalgia, good cast. A bit too predictable in places, but excited for the second season.

141. Hollywood Chainsaw Hookers (1988) 6/10

Fun 80s sleaze in which cult members doubling as hookers inflict grisly deaths of their clientele. Has some great one-liners, humorous kills and classic 80s-style nudity. Also one of Linnea Quigley's more enjoyable supporting roles.

47. Dead & Breakfast (2004)
A chaotic horror comedy that performs impressively on the horror and action front with lots of gore and and a genuine uncertainty about who is going to survive, but has a curiously misplaced sense of humour. The jokes are pitched somewhere between spoof and sitcom territory, but tend to fall flat as though the punchline never arrived. There's also some incongruous songs which were mainly useful in making the plot clear. In a desperate attempt to save the comedy, sitcom-style pizzicato strings play intrusively to signal "funny" conversations. It's rare that I think a failed comedy film suceeds as a bad movie, because by definition it can't be unintentionally funny, but this one ploughs along at such a fast rate, and with enough good zombie action that it is fun despite being a comedy desert. A cast of reliable performers help.

48. Rawhead Rex (1986)
By contrast, this one was unintentionally funny. It deservedly appears on Total Film 50 Most Unintentionally Hilarious Movies, which it achieves by taking Clive Barker's serious script dealing with the conflict of paganism and Christianity folklore but making the monster a muscleman in fantasy armour with a puppet beast head. He looks like somebody Conan the Barbarian would fight. The monster goes on the rampage, massacring men, women and children in ridiculous gory fashion and hypnotising priests by urinating on them. Then they try and do a Ghostbusters style special effects finale on their tiny budget.

142. Chainsaw Cheerleaders (2008) 6/10

Cheap and cheerful horror-comedy about a misfit teen cheerleader taking chainsaw in hand against a 500-year-old witch (played by Tiffany Shepis). Also has Debbie Rochon in a bit of a thankless supporting role. Overall it's very fun despite its obvious limitations.

Spoiler: click to toggleShow
50. There’s Nothing Out There (1991) More funny than scary, weird stuff, weird glasses, weird lasers, etc. OKay….. 4/10
51. La sindrome di Stendhal /The Stendhal Syndrome (1996) So this might be my only Halloween movie. Was pretty interesting. I think it was dubbed in English with other voices than the real actors. It was an ok experience, I guess. Film #873 on TDZDT, 708th check on TSZDT, now ranked at #46 on TSZDT

beginning of the month: TSZDT #67 on list with 664 checks out of 1000 (unchecked 336)

Key: (IMDb rating / icheck rating / my rating) 7.3 is above average on IMDb, 4% is above average for icheck, and 7 is above average for me.

Oct. 29. Pitch Black (2000) 7.1 / 5.1% / 4

With nearly 200,000 IMDb votes this was the highest rated popular horror movie I hadn't watched yet. It's shit! An action movie that cribs from the Alien franchise, but with awful dialogue, questionable acting, terrible CGI and basic cable production values. The picture is grainy and the colors are alternately washed out or filtered down to yellow or blue. It's an eyesore from beginning to end.

Oct. 30. The Devil (1972) 7.1 / 13.3% / 5

A surrealist art film about a failed revolutionary who goes mad and becomes a serial killer. The character behaviors are very puzzling which I suppose is the point. Or perhaps there is meaning and symbolism to this movie that would be apparent to a Polish intellectual from the time period, but I do not share that context. Either way my enjoyment of this was limited.

Oct. 31. Theatre of Blood (1973) 7.3 / 6.1% / 5

An early iteration of the Conceptual Serial Killer (e.g. Se7en) that Hollywood likes more than real life serial killers (who are almost always just depressing perverts). Vincent Price plays the role, as he does, like a campy Batman villain. He's the Shakespeare Killer! I suppose this gimmick tricks many people into thinking this a Smart Movie. It is not. But I would agree this is better than most slashers, which just aren't my thing.

Aw, I guess that's it for the challenge. Kind of a disappointing end to a pretty good month (watched more movies I liked than didn't). I'll post my tally tomorrow along with any other movies or shorts I might sneak in tonight before midnight. (Is that the official end?)

#Night 30#

74. Demon / Dibbuk - Eine Hochzeit in Polen (Marcin Wrona, 2015) 5/10

Thrill-O-Meter: 0 out of 10 screams.

75. The Objective (Daniel Myrick, 2008) 4/10

Thrill-O-Meter: 0 out of 10 screams.

Didn't finish: The Binding (Gus Krieger, 2015) [4 min]
Didn't finish: Extinction (Miguel Ángel Vivas, 2015) [13 min]
Didn't finish: The Damned / The Are the Damned (Joseph Losey, 1962) [8 min]

- for capturing so much of the weirdness, group dynamics and strange feelings that emerge during dinner parties;
- for feeling like identification figure Tom Hardy is surrounded by soap opera actors even though there is neither a Tom Hardy nor is everyone else a soap opera actor (in other words for having you wonder if you are the weird one or if everyone else is...or to quote the trailer: "A near perfect balance between suspicion and paranoia);
- for getting into an uncomfortable situation, then having all your suspicions confirmed but now you are stuck in the middle of this situation regardless and you have to recalculate everything you thought true and deal with it just like everyone else;
- for its character arc that ends up being an ironically painful and traumatic catharsis to what was originally a painful and traumatic experience;
- for its final punch creating a sense of an impending apocalypse.

#Night the 13th#

35. Hush (Mike Flanagan, 2016) 6/10

Thrill-O-Meter: 0 out of 10 hushed screams (but it was close to getting 1).

36. Entrance (Dallas Richard Hallam & Patrick Horvath, 2012) 6+/10

Thrill-O-Meter: 1 out of 10 screams
- for simply being.

#Night 14#

Thrill-O-Meter: 3 out of 10 screams.

Thrill-O-Meter: 0 out of 10 noisy scrubs.

39. The Oregonian (Calvin Reeder, 2011) 4-/10

Thrill-O-Meter: 0 out of 10 tinkerings with film.

40. The Little Girl Who Lives Down the Lane (Nicolas Gessner, 1976) (2nd+ viewing) 6-/10

Thrill-O-Meter: 0 out of 10 screams.

Didn't finish: The Hive (David Yarovesky, 2015) [7 min]

Thrill-O-Meter: 0 out of 10 annoying screams.

Didn't finish: After.Life (Agnieszka Wojtowicz-Vosloo, 2009) [7 min]

#Night 18#

44. Chosen Survivors (Sutton Roley, 1974) 3-/10

Thrill-O-Meter: -1 out of 10 screams
- for trying extra hard to be discomforting, making it extra laughable.

45. Unheimliche Geschichten / Eerie Tales / Weird Tales / Tales of the Uncanny (Richard Oswald, 1919) 2/10

Thrill-O-Meter: 0 out of 10 silent screams for unheimlich schlecht erzählte Geschichten.

46. 藪の中の黒猫 / Kuroneko / Black Cat From The Grove (Kaneto Shindô, 1968) (2nd viewing) 9/10

Thrill-O-Meter: 2 out of 10 expressionist screams in a beautiful nightmare
- for turning theatricality into uncanniness;
- for having principles (like swearing revenge) tested, by knowing that sticking to them means making a close relation/loved one your enemy;
- for the brightest, whitest, illuminated people and objects surrounded by complete, deep, pitch-black darkness, and stuff dropping in and out of light like a motherf-cker;
- for people-flying-through-the-air scenes that are more intense than in any kung-fu film;
- for, like, the "grove-iest" forest ever, man.

47. Livide (Alexandre Bustillo & Julien Maury, 2011) 3/10

Thrill-O-Meter: 0 out of 10 screams en française.

48. Time Walker / Being From Another Planet (Tom Kennedy, 1982) 2/10

Thrill-O-Meter: 0 out of 10 wails.

50. The Exorcist (Theatrical Cut) (William Friedkin, 1973) (3rd viewing) 7+/10

Thrill-O-Meter: 1 out of 10 screams
- for showing that everyone is looking for answers, and religion makes everything so easy;
- for showing that everyone likes having a purpose and that in times of emotional distress one often tries to either ignore it or tackle it indirectly, and helping a child in need who is the daughter of a famous and rich actress comes in very handy;
- for becoming what you fear as a horrid weapon against rape and a self-destructive method of self-preservation.

surrealist plot of eroticism and madness drawing on unica zurn's dark spring and stoker's dracula's guest . at least three nested stories which intertwine to oneiric effect amid dark gothic atmosphere. rather impressive and binet's only feature! 7/10

140. Alone in the Dark (1982)
I love the cold open in this open. It came on like something out of Blood Diner but then snapped back to reality and diddled along for a while before the inmates even escaped the asylum. Once they did, it picks up a little but still doesn't live up to the promise of Martin Landau and Jack Palance being insane. At least they have the always reliable Donald Pleasance as, what else, the doctor who rushes in to help randomly because he knows the crazed maniacs intimately.

141. L'ultimo treno della notte (1975)
a.k.a. Night Train Murders
Comparing this to Last House on the Left (which is easy since even the promotional material did so), the crime itself feels much more overly stylized (courtesy of the more giallo-centric Aldo Lado) with a decent but somewhat lazy Morricone soundtrack (based on his standards anyway). After the attack, the movie grinds to a halt for quite a while, bogged down in giallo-esque procedural business before the revenge kicks in for the finale. Yea, not great overall.

142. Curtains (1983)
I thought this was a fairly standard slasher for the most part. It does have a couple of fairly striking scenes though like the ice skating attack and the old hag mask is a pretty creepy looking killer disguise. I didn't really find the ending all that surprising though.

143. Count Yorga, Vampire (1970)
Fairly generic vampire tale with a really tedious middle section. The ending picks up but doesn't quite know whether to embrace its camp or remain overly serious. The last scene fake-out is just another example of this behavior.

144. The Last Winter (2006)
I feel of two minds about this one. On one hand, we've got the always reliable Ron Perlman and Connie Britton along with several other solid cast members as well as some well-shot, very eerie atmosphere. On the other hand, the effects are pretty terrible, being very distracting from the narrative at times, especially the crappy CG snow and the creature toward the end. Overall it still fairs better than Fassenden's Wendigo.

145. Yi boh lai beng duk (!996)
a.k.a. The Ebola Syndrome
I'm not sure if I could think of a more unlikable main character in a film. This guy is just pure scum from the beginning all the way to the bitter end, spreading disgusting ebola virus in every way he possibly can. I can't say I enjoyed watching this, but I'm sure there's a group of people who revel in gore and unmentionable body fluids that would get a kick out of it.

146. Dr. Terror's House of Horrors (1965)
Here we have another Amicus anthology movie. While none of the shorts stand out, most of them are at least mildly entertaining, with the brief werewolf story, the jazzy voodoo and the somewhat longer Donald Sutherland-led vampire story being some of the highlights. I was fairly disappointed in Lee's killer severed hand section as well as the killer plant story, both coming off fairly hokey. The wraparound was fine but not one of Amicus' best.

147. You gui zi (1976)
a.k.a. The Oily Maniac
If this movie is any indication, the Shaw Bros. would've made a freakin' awesome Swamp Thing movie. While this isn't going to win any distinguished awards or anything, it's pretty consistently entertaining with loads of nudity and crazy kung fu oil creature fighting.

148. Child's Play 3 (1991)
Pretty middling sequel, I mainly watched it for completion's sake. It really feels like someone just said, 'give me a treatment for Chucky terrorizing a military academy' and then someone farted this out. It all plays out very familiar with Andy warning everyone of the murderous doll and people thinking he's just crazy. Chucky kills. Rinse. Repeat. The barber death was especially stupid.

149. Annabelle (2014)
Considering this was a spin-off of the wall-to-wall spook show The Conjuring, it's surprisingly dull. The plot meanders along, hinting at the haunted doll's evil on occasion but rarely letting it loose. By the time they stick it back in its glass case, you've arrived at the conclusion that you don't really care if it stays there or not.

150. The Being (1983)
You know, every fiber of my being (geddit?) tells me this isn't a good movie, but I'll be damned if our old buddy Jackie Kong (of Blood Diner fame) hasn't given us a good ol' monster mash that offers up a pretty decent time amidst all the bad acting and backwards plotting. He's wise to relegate the monster primarily to POV shots early on, only really busting him out toward the end. And you know what, the monster ain't half bad. A little stiff but yea, it's pretty decent as far as monsters go. The ending in the warehouse does drag on too long though. I have to say, I did love the clunky "where are they now" stories at the end.

151. Cemetery Sisters (!987)
Oh boy... Another shot-on-video shitfest... It's remarkable how little actually happens in the movie. When it recycles the same hair brushing scenes like four times, you know you're in trouble. The random short toward the end the kid is watching is far more interesting than movie he's actually in.

152. Curse of Chucky (2013)
Suprisingly stylishly shot with a really nice, dark palette and visual panache. The plot itself is a little overly basic though, mostly ignoring the previous two over-the-top entries and going back to the first three's more direct horror. Overall, a pretty decent entry in the series.

Well, that's it for me! I actually hit over 150. Didn't think I'd actually get that far but with my final overnight marathon, I managed to reach it. It's always a treat doing these horror challenges and I'm looking forward to next year!
