71. Vampirella (1996)
72. Attack of the Virgin Mummies (2004)
I think I might be running out of movies :p

I can see how Vampirella might work as a comic. But Wynorski managed to ruin everything. To put it simply. John Landis appears in a cameo, and he does the best acting of everyone in this. I think this might be Wynorski's most serious film, maybe alongside Deathstalker 2, and it shows.
But Vampirella is still Citizen Kane alongside AotVM. It's completely off the voting scale. I would give it -10/10 if imdb would let me, and clearly the worst I've seen this month.

Wow. Someone had fun :\
My father didn’t have the skill of a professional cameraman. The result? Avant-garde cinema.

65. Ghost Team One (2013) 3/10

Just terrible.

66. The Exorcist s01e04 (2016) 6.5/10

67. Jeruzalem (2015) 4/10

One giant advertisement for Google Glass.

68. Z Nation s03e05 (2016) 6.5/10

69. Channel Zero: Candle Cove (2016) 7/10

An intriguing story so far, reminds me just a bit of Stephen King's It so far. Looking forward to the next episode.

70. Krampus (2015) 6.5/10

Not too bad as far as Christmas-themed horror films go.

71. Zoombies (2016) 3.5/10

Cheap, boring and predictable, and yet, one of the better Asylum efforts (not that that's saying much).

72. Scream Queens s02e04 (2016) 6/10

73. Children of the Corn III: Urban Harvest (1995) 4.5/10

A more entertaining film than the previous two, as we see the franchise expand beyond the cornfield, but still pretty terrible.

74. American Horror Story s06e05 (2016) 6.5/10
75. American Horror Story s06e06 (2016) 6/10

Starting to go off the rails by mid-season, unfortunately.

76. Rasputin: The Mad Monk (1966) 6.5/10

Pretty light on the horror, but an interesting film all the same. Christopher Lee does a solid job as Rasputin.

27. Wait Until Dark (1967) - Albeit a tad silly, the suspense was really fucking good, and it has the weirdest portrayal by Alan Arkin you'll ever see. - 7/10
28. Transylvania 6-5000 (1985) - 2 journalists go to Transylvania in search of Frankenstein.. Had a few good moments. A family friendly horror film. - 4/10
29. Let Us Prey (2014) - Almost as a good a title as All You Need Is Kill. Liam Cunningham has a such a great present. Starts off slow, even a bit too slow, but it more than makes up for it. - 6/10

59. Ju-on (2002) 6/10
I don't know how I feel about this. It's definitely strong in the creepy atmosphere and imagery department, but the non-linear narrative not only makes it hard to follow, it also makes the fact that a lot of the scares are manufactured stand out since the build up is always on "how will this person be shocked/killed" rather than "what will happen next".

60. The House of the Devil (2009) 7/10
I hadn't planned on watching this but then I saw some comments calling it a slow burn which is my kind of horror, so I figured I'd give it a go. It wasn't great, but it was pretty good. It tries hard to capture a 70s vibe and crafts a very good atmosphere, even though it wouldn't pass for a film made in the time period at all, that sets the mood well for a film that relies heavily on the tension of waiting for the horror you know is coming. While it does at the end feel like a pretty thin film, it does well to add in just enough little moments in the build up to keep things interesting. The climax is pretty great too and manages to throw in a couple of surprises even though the main part is telegraphed from the start.

61. Danza macabra (1964) 6/10
I wanted to like this more than I did. It's a well shot creepy film with a simple but compelling premise, but it's stuck spinning its wheels much of the time.

62. Feast (2005) 5/10
Very gory horror comedy, but most of the comedy lies in terrible one liners and meta horror movie humour, so while it keeps the tone light amidst the horror chaos it's not actually funny. It does have very energetic and well executed pacing so I can see how it can be effective for those looking for this kind of horror.

#xx Dead Ringers (1988, David Cronenberg) 7
Not going to count it as a horror, but I'll list it here anyway.

#27 The Blair Witch Project (1999, Daniel Myrick & Eduardo Sánchez) 5
Thrill-O-Meter: 0 out of 10 screams.

#28 Braindead / Dead Alive (1992, Peter Jackson) 6
Thrill-O-Meter: 0 out of 10 screams.

#29 Killer Klowns from Outer Space (1988, Stephen Chiodo) 5
Thrill-O-Meter: 0 out of 10 screams.

#30 劇場版 零〜ゼロ〜/Gekijô-ban: Zero/Fatal Frame (2014, Mari Asato) 7
Thrill-O-Meter: 1 out of 10 screams for uncanny, unpredictable cursed ghosts and voices enthralling teenage girls in a boarding school leading to blackouts, fear and seduction of desires within an alluring dangerous realm, recounting possibly relevant past events, visiting possibly relevant places and people as part of an ‘investigation’ during which the protagonists simultaneously discover themselves, as well as the virtues and vices, strikes and gutters, ups and downs of growing-up/life. I also felt like I overlooked or missed out on stuff by not being female, since it is (intended as or as a consequence of the director being a woman) quite a gender-specific film with the setting and phrase “curse that only affects girls” repeatedly being said. So there’s that apparent drawback (a lack of distinct “relatedness”), but that fact is spontaneously fuelled into mysteriousness in line with the overall narrative qualities mixing the sensate and natural with the phantasmal and psychological.

125. Matango (1963)
a.k.a. Attack of the Mushroom People
Not as hokey as I expected, it builds some moderate suspense before turning into a hallucinogenic nightmare by the end. Yes, the actual mushroom people look pretty silly, but the movie still does a pretty good job of selling it. Really my main complaint was with just how long it takes to really get going.

126a. The Tell-Tale Heart (1971)
126b. Rifftrax Live: The Dirt Witch Cleans Up
126c. Meat (2012)
126d. Bob's Burgers: Teen-A-Witch

127. The Nanny (1965)
This was an interesting mystery with some good misdirection. Hard to talk anymore about it without spoilers, but suffice it to say the movie does a good job of selling the perpetrator.

128. Someone's Watching Me! (1978)
I shouldn't be surprised that John Carpenter could craft a solid, suspenseful made-for-TV movie. Especially in the second half, it offers some genuine thrills only disrupted by the lame commercial breaks. It offers a good warm up for his next flick, Halloween.

129. Mientras duermes (2011)
a.k.a. Sleep Tight
Speaking of incredibly suspenseful, this nasty bit of intensity is stunningly well-executed. It builds a very well-rounded character who's both a monster but something much sadder while also having a very subtle but biting sense of humor as well.

130. Weird ass old Halloween-themed animated shorts: Halloween (1931), Felix the Cat Switches Witches (1927), Spooks (1931), Midnight Frolics (1938), Swing You Sinners! (1930), The Wizard's Apprentice (1930), Puttin' Out the Kitten (1937)
Man, old cartoons were weird as fuck...

131-132. Dead Set (2008) Ep. 1-5
Pretty decent end-of-the-world zombie apocalypse mini-series that would probably be more meaningful in its humor if I had ever actually seen Big Brother. As it stands, I got a little tired of the overly obnoxious characters and was relieved when one would get killed off. Despite it's length, it is well-paced and rarely becomes dull.

133. Black Devil Doll from Hell (1984)
Holy shit... I can absolutely 100% guarantee with complete certainty that NO ONE has seen a movie worse than this for this challenge. IT'S GLORIOUS! At least as glorious as an ultra-terrible, shot-on-video amateur crapfest about a sentient black girl doll with dreadlocks raping a church woman into a sexual awakening can be.

#Night 27#

67. Nightfall (Paul Mayersberg, 1988) 7/10

'Nightfall' concerns a community in a world of perpetual light (they have three suns), dealing with the prophecy of a nightfall, a frightening prospect that is starting to come true as one sun after the other is starting to set. It is a fantasy film about spirituality in the face of the uncertainty of the future, functioning as a sort of alternate biblical story of the dawn of man. While certainly a bit clunky and far from a great film overall, I rather liked it, dramaturgy and suspense are pretty much non-existent, but it is after all a film about spirituality and while being about opposing groups I have respect for how the film doesn't villainize anybody. It's a decently made B-movie, the quality of which may not be on-par with the prose of the bible, but to make up for it this story is more agreeable than most the stories of the bible, plus it doesn't pretend to be anything more than fantasy. So, 7/10 both for 'Nightfall' and 'The Holy Bible'.

Thrill-O-Meter: 0 out of 10 screams.

68. They're Watching (Jay Lender & Micah Writh, 2016) 5/10

Thrill-O-Meter: 0 out of 10 screams.

Hilart-E-Meter: 1 out of 10 screams.

Didn't finish: Paranormal Activity 3 (Henry Joost & Ariel Schulman, 2011) [3 min]

I know what you saw last night!Show
#Night 1#

1. House of Mortal Sin (Pete Walker, 1976) 2/10

Thrill-O-Meter: 0 out of 10 screams for a crazily self-righteous priest in a very conventional British B-movie that in 2016 also feels hopelessly dated (I mean an old priest having the hots for the adult women who visit his confession booth instead of for the altar boys who ring his bell and scrub his cross, what a ridiculous notion!).

2. Green Room (Jeremy Saulnier, 2015) 6-/10

Thrill-O-Meter: 0 out of 10 Heil Hitlers for a reasonably unclichéd but cinematically bland and ineffective non-horror film.

3. Goodbye Gemini (Alan Gibson, 1970) 6/10

Thrill-O-Meter: 0 out of 10 swinging shrieks for a pretty intriguing and promising buildup, but instead of the horror getting started in the second half it just slowly fizzles out into almost complete irrelevance.

#Night 2#

4. 劇場版　零　ゼロ / Fatal Frame (Mari Asato, 2014) 8/10

Thrill-O-Meter: 1 out of 10 teary-eyed shudders for its eeriness that stems from desires that are as confounding as they are agonizing, so much so that they are manifested as ghostly visions and actions caused by forces beyond people's own will.

5. Event Horizon (Paul W.S. Anderson, 1997) (2nd+ viewing) 7-/10

Thrill-O-Meter: 0 out of 10 self-molesting screams for squandering a promising horror concept with (too few) descriptions of the unspeakable horrors awaiting on the other side of the universe, which have all the eloquence of a 10-year-old's essay about Hell scribbled down in a hurry while sitting in the bus on the way to school, the best of which probably still was "where we're going, we won't need eyes to see" (where's Lovecraft when you need him?), instead this action sci-fi film mostly opts for visual depictions that are equally as sophisticated (maggots, cut up bodies, maggots, fountains of blood, and maggots) and filling a lot of runtime with what's basically "Solaris goes slasher horror".

6. 31 (Rob Zombie, 2016) 2/10

RIP Rob Zombie - Thank you for 'House of 1000 Corpses'. I will miss you.

Thrill-O-Meter: 0 out of 10 hillbilly hollas because unfortunately screams of horrific disappointment don't count.

Didn't finish: Spasmo (Umberto Lenzi, 1974) [7 min]

#Night 3#

7. Nightmares (Joseph Sargent 1983) 3+/10

Thrill-O-Meter: 0 out of 10 Teufelsnagetiere (devil's rodents) for having f-ck all to do with nightmares, unless silly little stories with conclusions that can't even be said to have some kind of moral can be called nightmares.

8. Strasek, der Vampir (Theodor Boder, 1982) 4/10

https://vimeo.com/ondemand/strasek

Thrill-O-Meter: 0 out of 10 hollow screams for being like a (completely vampire-less) Swiss Dreyer film...after Dreyer watched Herzog's 'Nosferatu' a hundred times and then proceeded to make an ultra-low budget film with nothing to say or even really a story to tell but figured that a relentlessly tootling synthy score would be enough to make it worthwhile.

#Night 4#

9. The Truth About Emanuel (Francesca Gregorini, 2013) 6+/10

Thrill-O-Meter: 0 out of 10 moans for a sad psycho-drama about loss with some suspense/mystery elements - definitely not a horror film (for this I didn't find it sad enough), even its thriller thrills are pretty mild, but the damage is done.

10. February / The Blackcoat's Daughter (Oz Perkins, 2015) 9-/10

Thrill-O-Meter: 5 out of 10 screams for leaving me in a constant state of anticipation; for totally delivering in the second half in completely unpredictable ways; for showing the murderous dangers of having a one-track-mind; for striking a brilliant balance between groundedness and unsettling mysteriousness; for evoking a certain loneliness by making clear that even if other people are friendly and helpful to each other everyone is basically on their own; for knowing that there are no villains but that every person has issues; for not even making me wonder why the perpetrator did what the perpetrator did but for instead making me accept that it is about showing that you can never know what goes on in another person, yet once it does get a little into the perpetrator's motivations it finds a beautifully non-conclusive middle-ground between psychology and spirituality/demonic possession; and for being as tragic as it is unsettling - while the reactions so far seem to be very mixed I am confident that this one still has to find its audience and will be a film with a lot of lasting power, and if nothing goes wrong I'm sure that we will hear many more great things from Oz Perkins in the future.

11. The Incredible Melting Man (William Sachs, 1977) 1/10

Thrill-O-Meter: 0 out of 10 ATCHKAs for being incredibly melty.

#Night 5#

12. A Thief in the Night (Donald W. Thompson, 1972) 7/10

Thrill-O-Meter: 1 out 10 preachings about God for being dumb yet sort of thrilling raptureploitation; for feeling like a charmingly home-made community effort that is not only pretty solid but in its own small way has ambitious filmmaking that is strangely suggestive (especially great: the mindful match cut editing and the variety of music); for its trippy ending that suggests an eternal hell for the ones that have been left behind; for the time.....is near.

13. Hangman (Adam Mason, 2015) 7-/10

Thrill-O-Meter: 1 out 10 silent creepers living in your house for taking voyeurism to the next (more immediate) cinematic level (in fact being the only film I can think of where voyeurism is used in any decently unsettling way); and for the final section that taken on its own is nothing special but which I found surprisingly effective, the accumulation of this family's mundane everyday life footage did something to me without my realizing it and consequently infused this event in the end that we have seen before a thousand times in movies with resonance.

14. The Beast with Five Fingers (Robert Florey, 1946) 2/10

Thrill-O-Meter: 0 out of 10 fears, but ten tears for poor Peter Lorre giving his all and wasting his energy on this stinker.

15. The Cottage (Paul Andrew Williams, 2008) 6/10

Thrill-O-Meter: 0 out of 10 screams for what is to an extent a British variant of 'From Dusk Till Dawn'.

Hilarit-E-Meter: 2 out of 10 laughs.

Thrill-O-Meter: 0 out of 10 screams for having no Nazis (or even wolves really).

17. A Distant Thunder / A Thief in the Night II: A Distant Thunder (Donald W. Thompson, 1978) 4/10

Thrill-O-Meter: 0 out of 10 screams.

#Night 7#

18. Gremlins (Joe Dante, 1984) (2nd+ viewing) 5+/10

Thrill-O-Meter: 0 out of 10 cackles by green monsters who just wanna have fun for a film that alludes to so many possible allegorical readings (a cautionary tale about being a responsible pet owner/parent, suburban paranoia, xenophobia, consumerism, the dangers of technology, modern man messing with nature), but none of which stick, so it ends up being a hollow experience full of random references to pop culture, classic movies and Spielberg's and Dante's own work as a substitute for actual jokes - possibly the first major production guilty of this(?), so thanks very much, 'Gremlins'.

19. Phase IV (Saul Bass, 1974) (2nd viewing) 8/10 (from 9)

Thrill-O-Meter: 1 out of 10 high-pitched ant screams for some people would rob their mother for ants, rat snitch on one another for ants, sometimes kids get murdered for ants, so before we go any further I want my ants!

[6 min]. Phase IV - "lost ending" (Saul Bass, 1974) (3rd viewing) 9/10

Thrill-O-Meter: 0 out of 10 screams for this supernatural melodrama shot in typically distinctive Akio Jissôji fashion with striking-looking (video) images.

22. The Incredibly Strange Creatures Who Stopped Living and Became Mixed-Up Zombies!!? (Ray Dennis Steckler & camera operator Vilmos Zsigmond, 1964) (2nd viewing) 3/10 (from 1)

Thrill-O-Meter: Eh...well, at least it isn't formulaic.

23. Lights Out (David F. Sandberg, 2016) 5+/10

Thrill-O-Meter: 0 out of 10 cries for help in the dark for finding a way for visualizing fear of the dark (solution: a perpetually backlit naked witch with anger issues) even though the story has zero to do with fear of the dark; and for fickle electricity.

#Night 9#

24. The Day of the Triffids (Steve Sekely & and David Lynch cinematographer Freddie Francis, 1962) 4/10

Thrill-O-Meter: 0 out of 10 screams for a nice collection of horrifying "what if..." scenarios (alien invasion through killer plants, most of the population going blind, an airplane "trapped" in the air because everyone is blind, escaped convicts taking over a crowded mansion of blind "womenfolk" to help party it down like an American band,...) turned into a typical laughable 50's sci-fi B-movie (even though it was already the 60's) that is no less dumb than the average MST3k movie but thanks to keeping things varied and some decent production values it isn't painfully dull at all.

Hilarit-E-Meter: 1 out of 10 laughs.

25. The Watcher in the Woods (John Hough & Vincent McEveety, 1980) 5/10

Thrill-O-Meter: 0 out of 10 screams for a very typical (but perfectly watchable) "ghost-haunts-female-character-to-find-peace-in-the-afterlife" horror movie with the distinction of having a convenient super-happy sappy ending that goes way beyond supernatural to veer straight into fantasy territory, but it's a Disney movie, so what else could you expect?

Didn't finish: The Lost Skeleton of Cadavra (Larry Blamire, 2001) [11 min]
Didn't finish: True Love Ways (Mathieu Seiler, 2015) [19 min + ending]
Didn't finish: From the Dark (Conor McMahon, 2014) [30 min + ending]

26. Friend Request (Simon Verhoeven, 2016) 7/10

Thrill-O-Meter: 2 out of 10 *screams* for a sensibly told thriller that very much gets the overlap and interplay between online and offline life and excellently translates it into cinematic storytelling, unfortunately I wasn't quite on the same page as the film with the supernatural elements that were introduced later on, because while those fairly generic "horror hallucination" sequences worked OK enough on their own I kept looking for rational explanations (the fact that the cameras recorded different things than what the characters saw seemed to support that reading), but as became clear by the end, the film fully embraced the supernatural angle. So, I think there was a considerably better film in there (in the down-to-earth part) but unlike in the thematically similar 'Unfriended' (overall they are very different films, though) there unfortunately isn't a successful synthesis of relevant themes connected to social media issues and the plot's supernatural elements...but this is still my favorite German-produced English-language horror movie set in California that was shot in South Africa with Australian, British and American actors. Easily.

27. The Cat and the Canary (Paul Leni, 1927) 5+/10

Thrill-O-Meter: 0 out of 10 silent screams for a nice creepy castle, which in combination with the framing that gives an unusually large amount of headroom, emphasizing the size of the rooms, does half the work; for the quite creative opening sequences that especially called to mind Epstein's "House of Usher" film for me - and while the whole thing runs out of steam pretty soon it maintains a minimum of atmosphere even through all the shenanigans.

28. The Unearthly (Boris Petroff, 1957) 1+/10

Thrill-O-Meter: 0 out of 10 "Time for go to bed."

#Night 11#

29. 地下幻燈劇画 少女椿 / Midori / rough translation of original title: "Underground Projected Dramatic Pictures: Maiden Camellia" (Hiroshi Harada, 1992) 7-/10

Thrill-O-Meter: 1 out of 10 mild screams of despair purely for the intense ending that doesn't hold anything back, having endured and gotten through misery and extreme abuse for some time without killing herself thanks to an unwarranted hope of things getting better, the protagonist finally gets to have some very tangible hope for a brighter future, having this bubble burst ironically is worse than all the lows she experienced hitherto, creating an intense feeling of the whole world being against her, like everyone has always hated and deceived her, which is translated into an ending that brought to mind the devastating conclusion of Mulholland Dr. for me.

30. The Ninth Gate (Roman Polanski, 1999) (2nd viewing) 6/10

Thrill-O-Meter: 0 out of 10 screams for a whole lotta disappointing nothing.

31. The Vatican Tapes (Mark Neveldine, 2015) 3+/10

Thrill-O-Meter: 0 out of 10 "Your mother sucks cocks in hell".

Didn't finish: The Pact (Nicholas McCarthy, 2012) [11 min]

#Night 12#

32. Histoires extraordinaires / Tales of Mystery and Imagination (by Edgar Allan Poe) / Spirits of the Dead (Roger Vadim & Louis Malle & Federico Fellini, 1968) 8-/10

1) "Metzengerstein": 8
2) "William Wilson": 7
3) "Toby Dammit": 7-

Thrill-O-Meter: 2 out of 10 screams
- for poignant tales about simple unfulfillment commanding ones life, told with great nuance and cinematic richness in what is the second-most-brilliant horror anthology that I recall seeing.

33. Teenagers from Outer Space (Tom Graeff, 1959) 3+/10

Thrill-O-Meter: 0 out of 10 moody teens throwing a tantrum due to hormonal imbalance even though they are aliens played by grownups, but they certainly act like teens.

34. The Invitation (Karyn Kusama, 2015) 9-/10

Thrill-O-Meter: 4 out of 10 screams
- for capturing so much of the weirdness, group dynamics and strange feelings that emerge during dinner parties;
- for feeling like identification figure Tom Hardy is surrounded by soap opera actors even though there is neither a Tom Hardy nor is everyone else a soap opera actor (in other words for having you wonder if you are the weird one or if everyone else is...or to quote the trailer: "A near perfect balance between suspicion and paranoia);
- for getting into an uncomfortable situation, then having all your suspicions confirmed but now you are stuck in the middle of this situation regardless and you have to recalculate everything you thought true and deal with it just like everyone else;
- for its character arc that ends up being an ironically painful and traumatic catharsis to what was originally a painful and traumatic experience;
- for its final punch creating a sense of an impending apocalypse.

35. Hush (Mike Flanagan, 2016) 6/10

Thrill-O-Meter: 2 out of 10 expressionist screams in a beautiful nightmare
- for turning theatricality into uncanniness;
- for having principles (like swearing revenge) tested, by knowing that sticking to them means making a close relation/loved one your enemy;
- for the brightest, whitest, illuminated people and objects surrounded by complete, deep, pitch-black darkness, and stuff dropping in and out of light like a motherf-cker;
- for people-flying-through-the-air scenes that are more intense than in any kung-fu film;
- for, like, the "grove-iest" forest ever, man.

47. Livide (Alexandre Bustillo & Julien Maury, 2011) 3/10

Thrill-O-Meter: 0 out of 10 screams en française.

50. The Exorcist (Theatrical Cut) (William Friedkin, 1973) (3rd viewing) 7+/10

Thrill-O-Meter: 1 out of 10 screams
- for showing that everyone is looking for answers, and religion makes everything so easy;
- for showing that everyone likes having a purpose and that in times of emotional distress one often tries to either ignore it or tackle it indirectly, and helping a child in need who is the daughter of a famous and rich actress comes in very handy;
- for becoming what you fear as a horrid weapon against rape and a self-destructive method of self-preservation.

Didn't finish: William Peter Blatty's Legion / The Exorcist III (Director's Cut) (would-be-2nd-viewing) [20 min]

63. Mockingbird (Bryan Bertino, 2014) 2/10

Thrill-O-Meter: -1 out of 10 screams
- for a far-fetches premise that would have been difficult to make believable even as a "normal" thriller and for failing extra hard as a faux-found-footage movie by giving the characters reasons to actually rather NOT film what they are doing.

Not going to count it as a horror, but I'll list it here anyway.

63. Sette note in nero (1977) 7/10
The lack of gore is a bit of a surprise from Fulci, but it works well as he makes a more traditional giallo. It's a decent mystery with a strong climax, but it never quite hits that something special to make it shine.

64. May (2002) 7/10
I'm surprised I actually like this. A descent into madness played with a strong dose of absurdity but also with an underlying emotional sincerity. The balance between the two is quite effective, with the opening half hour making me wonder how this was a horror film and the last half hour being obviously horror, yet the transition is very smooth so that every scene makes sense in the context of the previous one. The supporting performances are pretty good, matching the film's tone of increasing surrealism.

65. April Fool's Day (1986) 6/10
I'd rate this a bit higher if the characters were actually people you'd want to hang out. Yeah, the film is self aware that these are entitled brats, and they're not actively dislikable, but it still makes me less invested in what happens to them. As slashers go this isn't bad, there are some really dumb decisions in the second half, but mostly things make sense and there's a decent amount of creativity and entertainment in the execution. The comedic aspect is also pretty well done, staying in the context of the film and its characters.

69. The Enfield Haunting (Kristoffer Nyholm; written by Joshua St Johnston, 2015) (mini-series) 6/10

Thrill-O-Meter: 0 out of 10 screams.

70. I Am the Pretty Thing That Lives in the House (Oz Perkins, 2016) 8-/10

(Written after my second viewing.)

I would describe 'I Am the Pretty Thing That Lives in the House' as a gothic short story (or maybe even a gothic poem) brought to the screen. But forget about all the tropes and visuals that are associated with this genre, it is instead focused on what for me is the essential element of gothic literature: The dead are alive. This doesn't seem like much to build a narrative on, and the driving force of "Pretty" indeed is not plot, nor characters, nor the solving of a mystery. And while all three things are embedded into its narrative it is first and foremost a tone poem. An important thing about the the-dead-are-alive notion, especially in this film, is that it goes both ways. The living can sense the presence of the dead (AKA ghosts), but the dead actually live on after their death, probably mostly concerned with reliving their past, but they might also be able to sense the living. So who is haunting who?

Consequently "Pretty" presents a ghost story within a ghost story, to put it in simplified terms. In more concrete terms the plot concerns Lily, a nurse who stays in the house of elderly horror fiction writer Iris Blum ("It's Blum, stupid. Not Ms. Plum. This isn't 'Clue'."), to take care of her until her death, which shouldn't be too far into the future now. But it also wouldn't be too wrong to say that the main character is the house that had a few occupants over the course of its lifetime. I don't mean this in the tired old this-and-that-place-is-like-another-character-in-the-film way, the personality of the house certainly is made up of all the people who lived in it. But writer-director Oz Perkins takes the expression "If these walls could talk" and makes it a reality. It is about the people who lived in the house (or more correctly the people who died in it), but for all intents and purposes the main character is the house itself.

"Pretty" starts with nurse Lily's first day at the house and her opening narration (her voice-over throughout the film sounds relatively lo-fi, like it might be coming from a tape recorder) tells us that she just turned 28 years old, but that she will never be 29. She talks about death, memory and says "From where I am now, I can be sure of only a very few things." One of those things is her name. So right from the beginning we know that Lily (at least Lily as a narrator) is already dead. Logic dictates that what we see on screen are her hazy memories of her short time in the house. Can we trust her words and can we trust what we see?

In any case, the old lady of the house Iris Blum doesn't talk much. But she keeps calling Lily by the name of Polly. And Lily seems to sense some ghostly presence in the house. Polly, as we soon learn, is the main character of Blum's most famous novel "The Lady in the Walls", a novel of which Blum said it lacks an ending because of "an obligation to be true to the subject" for Polly didn't tell Blum about her ending, but Blum tells us that she is convinced that "as endings go, Polly's was not an especially pretty one." Incidentally there also slowly emerges an ugly, moldy stain on one of the walls in the house that Lily grows concerned about. Is there some connection?

Perkins leaves the viewer in the dark for most of the film's running time about the concrete connections between all the characters, as slow and eventless as the whole thing is it is difficult to keep track of all the points of view. For example Lily isn't the only one whose voice-over we hear, we also hear and see young Blum as she writes the novel, and we hear and see Polly. Those voices also aren't particularly easy to distinguish, and it gets even more complicated when scaredy cat Lily finally dares to pick up "The Lady in the Walls" to read at least parts of it, the content of which is told from both Blum's and Polly's point of view. Through the viewer's natural desire to know the answers the film evokes ideas on the way as we contemplate all the possible answers. Did Polly really exist? Is she buried behind the wall? Are Lily and Polly somehow the same person? Is Lily a fictional character altogether? Or is Lily only imagining things?

Like a poem or a song it evokes first and foremost a tone, a mood, and sparks ideas of what it might be about. It takes further readings/listens to find that in between all the lines it actually tells a story, a simple story perhaps, but nevertheless a story. And this is actually how 'I Am the Pretty Thing That Lives in the House' worked for me. The tone and the ideas immediately took hold of me, but it took me two viewings to really make sense of the narrative. This isn't without its drawbacks, because frankly it isn't so much difficult to follow because it floods you with information that you need to sort out, on the contrary, it basically is so eventless that it poses a challenge to stay attentive for the whole time. This was, however, clearly a conscious choice by Perkins, and his approach is nothing if not consequential. But it makes criticisms of the film being "boring" particularly understandable in this case, "Pretty" indeed is very one-note, and unless it is a note you relish or that you learn to relish, it won't be enough for you to satisfyingly get you through a whole feature film.

As it turned out after two viewings, the solution to the mystery is quite concrete and surprisingly not at all convoluted. Nevertheless the ending for me is as chilling as it is simple, and it beautifully circles back onto itself, like a chorus that keeps coming back, just like what you would expect a story told by a ghost to be.

Thrill-O-Meter: 1 out of 10 mild screams of despair purely for the intense ending that doesn't hold anything back, having endured and gotten through misery and extreme abuse for some time without killing herself thanks to an unwarranted hope of things getting better, the protagonist finally gets to have some very tangible hope for a brighter future, having this bubble burst ironically is worse than all the lows she experienced hitherto, creating an intense feeling of the whole world being against her, like everyone has always hated and deceived her, which is translated into an ending that brought to mind the devastating conclusion of Mulholland Dr. for me.

- for showing that everyone is looking for answers, and religion makes everything so easy;
- for showing that everyone likes having a purpose and that in times of emotional distress one often tries to either ignore it or tackle it indirectly, and helping a child in need who is the daughter of a famous and rich actress comes in very handy;
- for becoming what you fear as a horrid weapon against rape and a self-destructive method of self-preservation.

“Then the righteous will answer him, ‘Lord, when did we see you hungry and feed you, or thirsty and give you something to drink? When did we see you a stranger and invite you in, or needing clothes and clothe you? When did we see you sick or in prison and go to visit you?’
“The King will reply, ‘Truly I tell you, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did for me.’ (Matthew 25:37-40)

Not going to count it as a horror, but I'll list it here anyway.
Mind if I ask why? :o
I see it more as a character(s) study with lots and lots of dialogue. There's one horror-esque Cronenberg-ian nightmare sequence and the rest of what might horrify is the gradual disintegration - loss of "sanity" - but that can be found in other "psychological dramas" as well, hence that's how I'd "classify" 'Dead Ringers'. However it does seem to be the type of film that could disturb or traumatise, unfortunately it didn't envelop me enough for me to feel any of that (for the record I still consider it a great film).

So to be reductive: 'Dead Ringers' is more analytical, realistic and dialogue-based than visceral-atmospheric-visual; not to imply that a good horror film cannot be dominantly made-up of the former (but not quite in this case).

whom shall we find
Sufficient? who shall tempt with wand’ring feet
The dark unbottom’d infinite Abyss,
And through the palpable obscure find out
His uncouth way, or spread his aerie flight,
Upborn with indefatigable wings,
Over the vast abrupt, ere he arrive
The happy Ile?

Joe Dante recaptures a bit of his eighties glory-days with this fun but unspectacular kid's horror adventure. It's genuine horror aimed at children, with a similar animated clown doll to Poltergeist (for some children it might be too horrific), and references to similar eighties fare like Paperhouse, Beetlejuice, The Gate, etc. though Dante keeps the references light enough not to be intrusive like the Astron-6 films I watched earlier this month. It lacks the level of action and urgency that Dante brought to his best films; a few more crazy things coming out of the hole would have done wonders, as would less of the characters deciding things like "Oh, the evil clown doll seems to have gone from my bedroom now. I'll go to sleep and maybe padlock the hole tomorrow morning".

44. Willard (1971)
Excellent cast but poorly directed. Fun performances are balanced out by bland camera shots and a lack of atmosphere. The remake had better visuals and rat wrangling/effects, but (with the exception of Crispin Glover) not as good a cast, so they're about even. I might even give the edge to the remake.

*45. Vampire Hunter D: Bloodlust (2000) (Rewatch)
I love the gothic art direction, the imaginative monsters/locations, the orchaestral soundtrack and the exciting action. I think it's brought down slightly by a few dud scenes and a couple of bad perforances from the English-language voice actors (this is a rare case of an anime made with an English track as the original so that's how I watch it).
7/10

Image

46. Alligator (1980)
Creature-feature shlock but put together in an enjoyable fashion. The plot is stupid and formulaic, but the cheesy dialogue and acting was funny and tons of people die in an enjoyable way: munched by the alligator, flattened by the alligator, blowing themselves up trying to kill the alligator... It's also fast-paced, so there's not much downtime between alligator attacks.

77. The Exorcist s01e05 (2016) 6.5/10

78. Taste the Blood of Dracula (1970) 6.5/10

A nice production, but there's not a lot going on here to keep one's interest. Still, not bad, though.

79. Shtolnya AKA The Pit (2006) 5/10 (Russia-->Ukraine)

Students on an archaeological dig in the forest find a pit, start exploring and...well, you know how these things go. Fairly tame stuff, but not too bad considering it's the first Ukrainian horror feature film ever made (that's the claim, anyway).

80. Amish Witches: The True Story of Holmes County (2016) 5/10

Pretty typical Lifetime fare.

81. The Forest (2016) 5/10

Woman goes looking for her twin sister in the Suicide Forest of Japan. A few jump scares and a few creepy moments, that's about it.

82. Z Nation s03e06 (2016) 6/10

83. Mercy (2014) 5/10

It's been about thirty years since I read the Stephen King short story on which this is based so I can't comment on how faithful this was to the source material, but I do remember the story being gripping, and I can't say the same for this adaptation. Ponderous, without enough meat to justify a feature length film.

Not too bad as far as Christmas-themed horror films go.
I wanted to watch this for the challenge but my girlfriend insists I wait til December.

130. Child's Play 3 (1991) 6/10 *rewatch

A better sequel than I originally gave it credit for, with a handful of solid kills and one-liners signalling the series later, more overt shift into horror-comedy. It does some clever things with its military academy setting and while the cast don't set the world on fire, they do an ok job. Carnibal finale makes for a great ending.

131. Bride of Chucky (1998) 7/10 *rewatch

For me this is the best of the series, a horror-comedy that pays homage to the genre classics while capitalising wisely on the post-Scream style of self-deprecation. All the kill scenes are creative and amusing, as is the back and forth betweeen Dourif's Chucky and Tilly's Tiffany. Once again things are capped off nicely and with a promise of the inevitable sequel.

132. Seed of Chucky (2004) 6/10 *rewatch

This is what it is and while it doesn't deliver on the promise of Bride of Chucky's ending, it makes for an amiable enough spoof of horror genre conventions. John Waters is fun in a supporting role as a barrel-scraping papparazzo.

133. Curse of Chucky (2013) 6/10 *rewatch

I overrated this one original. It has a great atmosphere but many scenes are rather dubiously executed, and it shoehorns in multiple endings.

134a. The Simpsons "Treehouse of Horror X" 7/10
134b. The Simpsons "Treehouse of Horror XV" 4/10
134c. The Simpsons "Treehouse of Horror XXVI" 4/10

135. You Can't Kill Stephen King (2012) 4/10

Lame teen slasher in which a killer's calling card is Stephen King inspired murders. Not nearly as fun as it ought to be.

136. Into the Grizzly Maze (2014) 6/10

Surprisingly decent killer bear movie, largely due to an usually talented cast for such fare (James Marsden, Billy Bob Thornton and Thomas Jane in the three main roles).

137. Hooked Up (2013) 5/10 *rewatch

Slightly better than I remembered it being, although a suspension of disbelief is required.

138. Beast of the Alamo (2013) 2/10

A laughably inane chupacabra horror in which DEA Officer Erik Estrada and a ragtag team battle against a hoard of the flesh-eating cryptid. The lousy special effects, uniformly wooden acting and corny as heck dialogue are a mixture or hilarity and agony.

139. The Bone Snatcher (2003) 4/10

A desert-set The Thing/Mimic kind of horror with some cool monster effects but no pay-off and shoddy writing.
