flavo5000's response makes sense, for instance. He stopped rating the movies because he likes bad movies, and that would mean either rating them too high for their objective qualities or too low based on his subjective enjoyment. I get that.

But, e.g. in your case the reviews suggest that you aren't getting any more enjoyment out of these movies than your ratings indicate. You don't have to answer me, but it is a fair question.

Well you asked three questions, not 1, but ok, I'll answer. I wouldn't want to undermine your assertion that it wasn't the point of your post to imply that the viewing habits you're questioning are somehow inferior to your own, so I'll leave you to decide for yourself why I've bolded and italicized certain parts of your post.
Can people watching tons of movies that we know almost no one likes explain why they are voluntarily wasting their time?
Consensus opinions on the movies I watch don't make any difference to me since there have been countless times when I've enjoyed widely down-rated films and probably even more times when I've disliked widely revered movies. In fact, my viewing experience would be very limited indeed if I allowed it to be guided by what other people think or how many people got to see a movie before I did. Personally, it seems only slightly less stupid an outlook than that of those who insist only on watching 1080p blu-rays, massively limiting the range of movies they will ever get to watch. The only real exceptions to this when it comes to horror movies are when people directly recommend them to me, at which point I'll look into the film and decide whether I'm interested. That's right, I look at stills and plot descriptions for most of the films I watch before watching them!

As far as wasting my time, I doubt anyone at my funeral would be any more impressed with me getting Platinum on the UNESCO list than they would be with me watching thousands of crappy horror movies. In fact, any one thing that someone does could just as readily be described as a waste of time by someone who doesn't share the same interest, so its a meaningless observation.
Can I save you the suspense and assure you that Paranormal Activity 12 or Children of the Corn 47 will not be good movies?
The reasons for me watching all the Children of the Corn movies is a simple sense of completism. Same goes for any horror franchise of which I've watched all the entries. Generally if I watch the first film in a horror franchise, I will then aspire to complete it. This is a forum inspired by a site dedicated to the tracking and completion of countless film lists, so perhaps this is something you will be able to comprehend. You certainly wouldn't save me any suspense telling me the next CotC film is going to be bad, not least because those films don't have any suspense to begin with, but it's also not the point. For the record, I was jokingly commentating on my CotC binge over on another site, so it wasn't all misery.
Why not look for horror movies you might like? If 60%+ of your ratings are below 5, you are a masochist.
Well looking for movies you might like is not the same as finding movies you like. Certainly you cannot predict with 100% accuracy which films you will like and dislike, even when it comes to low-budget B and horror movies like the ones I usually watch. For example, I didn't really expect to like Nightmare Sisters as much as I did and there are a number of entries on my list of favorite horror movies that I didn't see coming until I actually watched them and gave them a chance. There are also a number of movies that I went into this month expecting to enjoy them (Scare Campaign, Eat and Debug for example), only to discover that they sucked.

Generally I go for movies that have piqued my interest somehow and I typically look at screens and plot descriptions before checking most of them out, and despite what you say about me not appearing to get more enjoyment out of them, I only really suffer continuously during the 0-2/10 movies and there's something to be said for the kind of trash churned out by David DeCoteau and Jim Wynorski even though they are hardly ever good movies that I would give a positive rating to. In fact, if I'm going to give a rating of less than 5 it makes sense to explain why the rating is so low rather than call attention to the comparatively minor things I liked about them. But rest assured if the rating was 3 and above then there was at least something enjoyable or at least tolerable about them. I think my ratings are correctly weighted, so don't feel the need to go down the flavo route.

60. Scream Queens s02e03 (2016) 6/10

61. Z Nation s03e04 (2016) 6.5/10

62. Ôdishon AKA Audition (1999) 8.5/10 (Taiwan-->Japan)

I need a little time to process this one, but I do believe I just saw a great film.

63. Children of the Corn 2: The Final Sacrifice (1992) 3/10

If the second one in the series is this bad, how terrible must the rest of them be? Part 3 coming up this weekend, so I guess I'll find out soon enough.

64. Nochnoy dozor AKA Night Watch (2004) 5.5/10 (Japan-->Russia)

Overly long and surprisingly dull, especially considering it made the TSZDT and Cult Movies lists.

11. les jeux de la comtesse dolingen de gratz (catherine binet, 1981)
surrealist plot of eroticism and madness drawing on unica zurn's dark spring and stoker's dracula's guest. at least three nested stories which intertwine to oneiric effect amid a dark gothic atmosphere. rather impressive and binet's only feature! am tempted to give it 8/10 :think:

1. hungry stones (tapan sinha, 1960)
lovely romantic ghost story from india (and a freeleach on kg) 8/10

2. ladies in retirement (charles vidor, 1941)
this is more like gothic noir but it does have murder? and louis hayward and elsa lanchester. pretty fun 7/10

3. dr jekyll and mr hyde (john s robertson, 1920)
static compositions and too many intertitles. john barrymore is pretty awesome though 6/10

4. tôkaidô yotsuya kaidan aka the ghost of yotsuya (nobuo nakagawa, 1959)
really beautiful, yet also surprisingly gory for 1959! 8/10!

5. the sea wolf (michael curtiz, 1941)
there's a ghost ok? and great performance by edward g robinson 7/10

6. love massacre (patrick tam, 1981)
crazy weird hong kong horror set in san francisco. only 6 checks on icm. minimalist aesthetic, becomes a mad slasher in the last 30 mins 8/10

7. kyûketsu dokuro-sen/the living skeleton, (hiroshi matsuno, 1968)
similar plot to the fog, kind of hilarious special effects 6/10

8. return of the living dead (dan o'bannon, 1985)
so 80s, very silly but kinda fun too 6/10

9. the vvitch (robert eggars , 2015)
great looking film, usual witch stuff. errm... 6/10

10. the abominable dr phibes (robert fuest, 1971)

lol. i could watch a film a day if i pushed myself but don't think i could manage more than that (and still have a job). i need variety and also time to digest. i see 6 people there with 10 or less so i don't feel so bad :sweat: 301 is like ten films a day how is that even possible

i do generally watch between 20-30 features a month and i thought that was a lot :/

To be fair like 110-120 a month was the norm for me a few years ago. Ahhh the days of being a full time student without a job.

114. Danza macabra (1964)
a.k.a. Castle of Blood
You know, I like a good old dark house story, and this one does a solid job of building a sufficiently brooding, spooky atmosphere with shadows a-plenty and fog machines in overdrive. The plot's a little thin, but I think that's ok. Barbara Steele is also looking nice, fresh off Black Sunday. It's also capped nicely by an alarmingly bleak ending.

115. Una lucertola con la pelle di donna (1971)
a.k.a. Lizard in a Woman's Skin
Pretty decent giallo here. I find that I tend to like Fulci's non-supernatural films (giallos and westerns) more than his more popular, famous horror efforts. Not sure why really. I think it may have something to do with him operating better with a little restraint. I mean, don't get me wrong. There's certainly a time and place for gates to hell and zombies punching sharks. But his skill as a director and his flair for style is a little more obvious with less ridiculous trappings.

116. Absentia (2011)
This was an interesting, mildly creepy low budget indie horror that has some nice ideas. It doesn't seem to add up to much by the end but I think it succeeds pretty well in its uneasy tone.

117. The Cottage (2008)
This is certainly the kind of movie than I need slipped in among all the serious, disturbing and/or creepy efforts for the month. This crime comedy cum Texas Chain Saw Massacre-style romp is pretty consistently entertaining with some good laughs and an overall freewheeling, fun vibe. It's not a masterpiece, but it doesn't really need to be.

12 so far this month for me, and that's total (1 was horror). But I do have 2 dates coming up. It's almost like I'm becoming a human being.
My father didn’t have the skill of a professional cameraman. The result? Avant-garde cinema.

That 301 in 2012 is never going to be topped, it was pretty amazing.

I don't know how I did that. I don't have the patience or the time for that anymore.

#Night 25#

62. The Little Shop of Horrors (colorized version, desaturated) (Roger Corman & his posse, 1960) 7-/10

Thrill-O-Meter: 0 out of 10 cadaver meals to feed ones need for money.

Hilarit-E-Meter: 3 out of 10 laughs.

63. Mockingbird (Bryan Bertino, 2014) 2/10

Thrill-O-Meter: -1 out of 10 screams
- for a far-fetches premise that would have been difficult to make believable even as a "normal" thriller and for failing extra hard as a faux-found-footage movie by giving the characters reasons to actually rather NOT film what they are doing.

[10 min]. The Scooby-Doo Project (Chris 'Casper' Kelly & Larry Morris & Steve Patrick, 1999) 6/10

Didn't finish: Broken (Simon Boyes & Adam Mason, 2006) [21 min]
Didn't finish: The Astro-Zombies (Ted V. Mikels, 1968) [11 min]

I know what you saw last night!Show
#Night 1#

1. House of Mortal Sin (Pete Walker, 1976) 2/10

Thrill-O-Meter: 0 out of 10 screams for a crazily self-righteous priest in a very conventional British B-movie that in 2016 also feels hopelessly dated (I mean an old priest having the hots for the adult women who visit his confession booth instead of for the altar boys who ring his bell and scrub his cross, what a ridiculous notion!).

2. Green Room (Jeremy Saulnier, 2015) 6-/10

Thrill-O-Meter: 0 out of 10 Heil Hitlers for a reasonably unclichéd but cinematically bland and ineffective non-horror film.

3. Goodbye Gemini (Alan Gibson, 1970) 6/10

Thrill-O-Meter: 0 out of 10 swinging shrieks for a pretty intriguing and promising buildup, but instead of the horror getting started in the second half it just slowly fizzles out into almost complete irrelevance.

#Night 2#

4. 劇場版　零　ゼロ / Fatal Frame (Mari Asato, 2014) 8/10

Thrill-O-Meter: 1 out of 10 teary-eyed shudders for its eeriness that stems from desires that are as confounding as they are agonizing, so much so that they are manifested as ghostly visions and actions caused by forces beyond people's own will.

5. Event Horizon (Paul W.S. Anderson, 1997) (2nd+ viewing) 7-/10

Thrill-O-Meter: 0 out of 10 self-molesting screams for squandering a promising horror concept with (too few) descriptions of the unspeakable horrors awaiting on the other side of the universe, which have all the eloquence of a 10-year-old's essay about Hell scribbled down in a hurry while sitting in the bus on the way to school, the best of which probably still was "where we're going, we won't need eyes to see" (where's Lovecraft when you need him?), instead this action sci-fi film mostly opts for visual depictions that are equally as sophisticated (maggots, cut up bodies, maggots, fountains of blood, and maggots) and filling a lot of runtime with what's basically "Solaris goes slasher horror".

6. 31 (Rob Zombie, 2016) 2/10

RIP Rob Zombie - Thank you for 'House of 1000 Corpses'. I will miss you.

Thrill-O-Meter: 0 out of 10 hillbilly hollas because unfortunately screams of horrific disappointment don't count.

Didn't finish: Spasmo (Umberto Lenzi, 1974) [7 min]

#Night 3#

7. Nightmares (Joseph Sargent 1983) 3+/10

Thrill-O-Meter: 0 out of 10 Teufelsnagetiere (devil's rodents) for having f-ck all to do with nightmares, unless silly little stories with conclusions that can't even be said to have some kind of moral can be called nightmares.

8. Strasek, der Vampir (Theodor Boder, 1982) 4/10

https://vimeo.com/ondemand/strasek

Thrill-O-Meter: 0 out of 10 hollow screams for being like a (completely vampire-less) Swiss Dreyer film...after Dreyer watched Herzog's 'Nosferatu' a hundred times and then proceeded to make an ultra-low budget film with nothing to say or even really a story to tell but figured that a relentlessly tootling synthy score would be enough to make it worthwhile.

#Night 4#

9. The Truth About Emanuel (Francesca Gregorini, 2013) 6+/10

Thrill-O-Meter: 0 out of 10 moans for a sad psycho-drama about loss with some suspense/mystery elements - definitely not a horror film (for this I didn't find it sad enough), even its thriller thrills are pretty mild, but the damage is done.

10. February / The Blackcoat's Daughter (Oz Perkins, 2015) 9-/10

Thrill-O-Meter: 5 out of 10 screams for leaving me in a constant state of anticipation; for totally delivering in the second half in completely unpredictable ways; for showing the murderous dangers of having a one-track-mind; for striking a brilliant balance between groundedness and unsettling mysteriousness; for evoking a certain loneliness by making clear that even if other people are friendly and helpful to each other everyone is basically on their own; for knowing that there are no villains but that every person has issues; for not even making me wonder why the perpetrator did what the perpetrator did but for instead making me accept that it is about showing that you can never know what goes on in another person, yet once it does get a little into the perpetrator's motivations it finds a beautifully non-conclusive middle-ground between psychology and spirituality/demonic possession; and for being as tragic as it is unsettling - while the reactions so far seem to be very mixed I am confident that this one still has to find its audience and will be a film with a lot of lasting power, and if nothing goes wrong I'm sure that we will hear many more great things from Oz Perkins in the future.

11. The Incredible Melting Man (William Sachs, 1977) 1/10

Thrill-O-Meter: 0 out of 10 ATCHKAs for being incredibly melty.

#Night 5#

12. A Thief in the Night (Donald W. Thompson, 1972) 7/10

Thrill-O-Meter: 1 out 10 preachings about God for being dumb yet sort of thrilling raptureploitation; for feeling like a charmingly home-made community effort that is not only pretty solid but in its own small way has ambitious filmmaking that is strangely suggestive (especially great: the mindful match cut editing and the variety of music); for its trippy ending that suggests an eternal hell for the ones that have been left behind; for the time.....is near.

13. Hangman (Adam Mason, 2015) 7-/10

Thrill-O-Meter: 1 out 10 silent creepers living in your house for taking voyeurism to the next (more immediate) cinematic level (in fact being the only film I can think of where voyeurism is used in any decently unsettling way); and for the final section that taken on its own is nothing special but which I found surprisingly effective, the accumulation of this family's mundane everyday life footage did something to me without my realizing it and consequently infused this event in the end that we have seen before a thousand times in movies with resonance.

14. The Beast with Five Fingers (Robert Florey, 1946) 2/10

Thrill-O-Meter: 0 out of 10 fears, but ten tears for poor Peter Lorre giving his all and wasting his energy on this stinker.

15. The Cottage (Paul Andrew Williams, 2008) 6/10

Thrill-O-Meter: 0 out of 10 screams for what is to an extent a British variant of 'From Dusk Till Dawn'.

Hilarit-E-Meter: 2 out of 10 laughs.

Didn't finish: The Forest (Jason Zada, 2016) [19 min]
Didn't finish: Yeogo goedam / Whispering Corridors (Ki-hyeong Park, 1998) [11 min]

#Night 6#

16. Le loup des Malveneur / The Wolf of the Malveneurs (Guillaume Radot, 1943) 3+/10

Thrill-O-Meter: 0 out of 10 screams for having no Nazis (or even wolves really).

17. A Distant Thunder / A Thief in the Night II: A Distant Thunder (Donald W. Thompson, 1978) 4/10

Thrill-O-Meter: 0 out of 10 screams.

#Night 7#

18. Gremlins (Joe Dante, 1984) (2nd+ viewing) 5+/10

Thrill-O-Meter: 0 out of 10 cackles by green monsters who just wanna have fun for a film that alludes to so many possible allegorical readings (a cautionary tale about being a responsible pet owner/parent, suburban paranoia, xenophobia, consumerism, the dangers of technology, modern man messing with nature), but none of which stick, so it ends up being a hollow experience full of random references to pop culture, classic movies and Spielberg's and Dante's own work as a substitute for actual jokes - possibly the first major production guilty of this(?), so thanks very much, 'Gremlins'.

19. Phase IV (Saul Bass, 1974) (2nd viewing) 8/10 (from 9)

Thrill-O-Meter: 1 out of 10 high-pitched ant screams for some people would rob their mother for ants, rat snitch on one another for ants, sometimes kids get murdered for ants, so before we go any further I want my ants!

[6 min]. Phase IV - "lost ending" (Saul Bass, 1974) (3rd viewing) 9/10

[5 min]. Total Skull AKA Rob and Sheri Moon Zombie Fan: The Fan Movie (Josh Hasty, 2011) 2/10

20. Blue Movie (Alberto Cavallone, 1978) 1/10

Thrill-O-Meter: 0 out of 10 rapes.

21. 青い沼の女 / Blue Lake Woman / Aoi numa no onna (Akio Jissôji / Akio Jissoji, 1986) 6/10

Thrill-O-Meter: 0 out of 10 screams for this supernatural melodrama shot in typically distinctive Akio Jissôji fashion with striking-looking (video) images.

22. The Incredibly Strange Creatures Who Stopped Living and Became Mixed-Up Zombies!!? (Ray Dennis Steckler & camera operator Vilmos Zsigmond, 1964) (2nd viewing) 3/10 (from 1)

Thrill-O-Meter: Eh...well, at least it isn't formulaic.

23. Lights Out (David F. Sandberg, 2016) 5+/10

Thrill-O-Meter: 0 out of 10 cries for help in the dark for finding a way for visualizing fear of the dark (solution: a perpetually backlit naked witch with anger issues) even though the story has zero to do with fear of the dark; and for fickle electricity.

#Night 9#

24. The Day of the Triffids (Steve Sekely & and David Lynch cinematographer Freddie Francis, 1962) 4/10

Thrill-O-Meter: 0 out of 10 screams for a nice collection of horrifying "what if..." scenarios (alien invasion through killer plants, most of the population going blind, an airplane "trapped" in the air because everyone is blind, escaped convicts taking over a crowded mansion of blind "womenfolk" to help party it down like an American band,...) turned into a typical laughable 50's sci-fi B-movie (even though it was already the 60's) that is no less dumb than the average MST3k movie but thanks to keeping things varied and some decent production values it isn't painfully dull at all.

Hilarit-E-Meter: 1 out of 10 laughs.

25. The Watcher in the Woods (John Hough & Vincent McEveety, 1980) 5/10

Thrill-O-Meter: 0 out of 10 screams for a very typical (but perfectly watchable) "ghost-haunts-female-character-to-find-peace-in-the-afterlife" horror movie with the distinction of having a convenient super-happy sappy ending that goes way beyond supernatural to veer straight into fantasy territory, but it's a Disney movie, so what else could you expect?

Didn't finish: The Lost Skeleton of Cadavra (Larry Blamire, 2001) [11 min]
Didn't finish: True Love Ways (Mathieu Seiler, 2015) [19 min + ending]
Didn't finish: From the Dark (Conor McMahon, 2014) [30 min + ending]

26. Friend Request (Simon Verhoeven, 2016) 7/10

Thrill-O-Meter: 2 out of 10 *screams* for a sensibly told thriller that very much gets the overlap and interplay between online and offline life and excellently translates it into cinematic storytelling, unfortunately I wasn't quite on the same page as the film with the supernatural elements that were introduced later on, because while those fairly generic "horror hallucination" sequences worked OK enough on their own I kept looking for rational explanations (the fact that the cameras recorded different things than what the characters saw seemed to support that reading), but as became clear by the end, the film fully embraced the supernatural angle. So, I think there was a considerably better film in there (in the down-to-earth part) but unlike in the thematically similar 'Unfriended' (overall they are very different films, though) there unfortunately isn't a successful synthesis of relevant themes connected to social media issues and the plot's supernatural elements...but this is still my favorite German-produced English-language horror movie set in California that was shot in South Africa with Australian, British and American actors. Easily.

27. The Cat and the Canary (Paul Leni, 1927) 5+/10

Thrill-O-Meter: 0 out of 10 silent screams for a nice creepy castle, which in combination with the framing that gives an unusually large amount of headroom, emphasizing the size of the rooms, does half the work; for the quite creative opening sequences that especially called to mind Epstein's "House of Usher" film for me - and while the whole thing runs out of steam pretty soon it maintains a minimum of atmosphere even through all the shenanigans.

28. The Unearthly (Boris Petroff, 1957) 1+/10

Thrill-O-Meter: 0 out of 10 "Time for go to bed."

#Night 11#

29. 地下幻燈劇画 少女椿 / Midori / rough translation of original title: "Underground Projected Dramatic Pictures: Maiden Camellia" (Hiroshi Harada, 1992) 7-/10

Thrill-O-Meter: 1 out of 10 mild screams of despair purely for the intense ending that doesn't hold anything back, having endured and gotten through misery and extreme abuse for some time without killing herself thanks to an unwarranted hope of things getting better, the protagonist finally gets to have some very tangible hope for a brighter future, having this bubble burst ironically is worse than all the lows she experienced hitherto, creating an intense feeling of the whole world being against her, like everyone has always hated and deceived her, which is translated into an ending that brought to mind the devastating conclusion of Mulholland Dr. for me.

30. The Ninth Gate (Roman Polanski, 1999) (2nd viewing) 6/10

Thrill-O-Meter: 0 out of 10 screams for a whole lotta disappointing nothing.

31. The Vatican Tapes (Mark Neveldine, 2015) 3+/10

Thrill-O-Meter: 0 out of 10 "Your mother sucks cocks in hell".

Didn't finish: The Pact (Nicholas McCarthy, 2012) [11 min]

#Night 12#

32. Histoires extraordinaires / Tales of Mystery and Imagination (by Edgar Allan Poe) / Spirits of the Dead (Roger Vadim & Louis Malle & Federico Fellini, 1968) 8-/10

1) "Metzengerstein": 8
2) "William Wilson": 7
3) "Toby Dammit": 7-

Thrill-O-Meter: 2 out of 10 screams
- for poignant tales about simple unfulfillment commanding ones life, told with great nuance and cinematic richness in what is the second-most-brilliant horror anthology that I recall seeing.

33. Teenagers from Outer Space (Tom Graeff, 1959) 3+/10

Thrill-O-Meter: 0 out of 10 moody teens throwing a tantrum due to hormonal imbalance even though they are aliens played by grownups, but they certainly act like teens.

34. The Invitation (Karyn Kusama, 2015) 9-/10

Thrill-O-Meter: 4 out of 10 screams
- for capturing so much of the weirdness, group dynamics and strange feelings that emerge during dinner parties;
- for feeling like identification figure Tom Hardy is surrounded by soap opera actors even though there is neither a Tom Hardy nor is everyone else a soap opera actor (in other words for having you wonder if you are the weird one or if everyone else is...or to quote the trailer: "A near perfect balance between suspicion and paranoia);
- for getting into an uncomfortable situation, then having all your suspicions confirmed but now you are stuck in the middle of this situation regardless and you have to recalculate everything you thought true and deal with it just like everyone else;
- for its character arc that ends up being an ironically painful and traumatic catharsis to what was originally a painful and traumatic experience;
- for its final punch creating a sense of an impending apocalypse.

35. Hush (Mike Flanagan, 2016) 6/10

Thrill-O-Meter: 0 out of 10 hushed screams (but it was close to getting 1).

- for trying extra hard to be discomforting, making it extra laughable.

45. Unheimliche Geschichten / Eerie Tales / Weird Tales / Tales of the Uncanny (Richard Oswald, 1919) 2/10

Thrill-O-Meter: 0 out of 10 silent screams for unheimlich schlecht erzählte Geschichten.

46. 藪の中の黒猫 / Kuroneko / Black Cat From The Grove (Kaneto Shindô, 1968) (2nd viewing) 9/10

Thrill-O-Meter: 2 out of 10 expressionist screams in a beautiful nightmare
- for turning theatricality into uncanniness;
- for having principles (like swearing revenge) tested, by knowing that sticking to them means making a close relation/loved one your enemy;
- for the brightest, whitest, illuminated people and objects surrounded by complete, deep, pitch-black darkness, and stuff dropping in and out of light like a motherf-cker;
- for people-flying-through-the-air scenes that are more intense than in any kung-fu film;
- for, like, the "grove-iest" forest ever, man.

50. The Exorcist (Theatrical Cut) (William Friedkin, 1973) (3rd viewing) 7+/10

Thrill-O-Meter: 1 out of 10 screams
- for showing that everyone is looking for answers, and religion makes everything so easy;
- for showing that everyone likes having a purpose and that in times of emotional distress one often tries to either ignore it or tackle it indirectly, and helping a child in need who is the daughter of a famous and rich actress comes in very handy;
- for becoming what you fear as a horrid weapon against rape and a self-destructive method of self-preservation.

Thrill-O-Meter: -1 out of 10 screams

53. The Stuff (1985) 6/10
This is kind of my baseline for what I expect out of a B-movie. Is it good? Not really. But it's competent and engaging and takes its pulpy plot just seriously enough to make you actually interested in what's happening but not so seriously that it can't have a sense of humour. There are some really bad shots and the first scene which sets the whole thing off is absurd, and the comedy sometimes goes way too broad, especially in the the wider scenes that are establishing the impact and popularity of The Stuff. Despite all that Moriarty really hits just the right tone of absurdity with his lead role and once the whole thing picks up steam it rolls right along with its crazy little allegory for consumerism and drug addiction. It's silly fun.

54. Dawn of the Dead (2004) 8/10 (Rewatch)
It was better than I remembered. I really like how many perspectives on interpersonal relationships the film explores, focusing on that rather than the consumerism of the original makes it feel very different. Lots of great shots too, which I've come to expect from Snyder but I don't think I noticed the first time I watched it. Also lots of really strong action sequences. The whole thing is paced really well, making the zombie horror more than just a momentary terror but rather a more lasting and permanent menace that makes the characters go through various shifts in perspective and expectation. It really brings out that the film is about what it means to be human. Also lots of gore if you're into that, I guess.

18a Bound in Flesh
18b The Dark One
19 The Citadel (A pile of shit. Watch Egoyan's Citadel instead).

117. The Howling (1981) 7/10 *rewatch

I'd decided to start off my Howling marathon with a rewatch of the original after watching the Welcome to Werewolfland featurette and concluding my original 4/10 rating from years back was harsh. Turns out it was a smart move as the film is much more fun and creative with the werewolf town premise than I had given it credit for. Performances are enjoyable too and one has to be impressed with the skill of the transformation sequences -- even the cartoon campfire scene is pretty well done. Solid ending, too.

118. Howling II: Your Sister is a Werewolf (1985) 6/10

Christopher Lee stars as a werewolf hunter bent on preventing a lycanthrophic takeover bid. Some neat gore effects and make up design in this one, and it's enjoyable to watch a determined Lee on the hunt for wolfblood, although he probably acts a little more than his thinly-layered part calls for. This also ramps up the bewbage and inserts its own quirks into the werewolf mythos and is a good film despite its faults.

119. Howling III (1987) 3/10

The first sign of the series taking a nosedive as the focus shifts to Australian marsupial werewolves with pouches for the young, and of course theres a whole subplot involving the nursing of a cub that has unfortunate echoes of Basket Case 3 excess. The tone is all off too, more reminiscent of a TV movie than a blood and teeth horror movie. And it just goes on and on, getting all the more baffling and boring as it does.

38. Hanno cambiato faccia / They Have Changed Their Face (1971) 6/10
39. Long Weekend (1978)
Both characters are unpleasant and stupid, and Marcia is insufferable. They're supposed to be an unlikeable pair, but they're killing animals and arguing right from the beginning so the audience never has a chance to engage with them, and the animal attacks are too rare and brief to enjoy their torment. It's a well-made film though, that captures the atmosphere of the uncanny, with good cinematography of the beach and a slow drip of increasingly sinister mysteries.

40. Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street (1936)
This is on the official Top 500 Horror list. Now it's not even on the TSZDT 1001-2000. It's a creaky, cheaply-made melodrama, one of the British "quota quickies", which were equivalent in quality to the lower tiers of America's poverty row. This does have two things going for it: firstly, it's an entertaining rendition of the Sweeney Todd story, with multiple murders and blackmails which keeps things interesting; secondly it has Tod Slaughter's excellent hammy performance as Todd. This is the performance he became famous for, and it's easy to see why. The low quality of much of the film that isn't Slaughter's performance (the film sinks noticeably whenever he's offscreen) is why this has slipped into obscurity.

41. Die Zärtlichkeit der Wölfe / Tenderness of the Wolves (1973)
A creepy and atmospheric character study of Fritz Haarmann (the German serial killer who inspired M). Its mix of nastiness, black humour and insightfulness is appealing, as is a beautifully disturbing performance by Kurt Raab as Haarmann. The technical values are also excellent and my Blu-Ray looked great. Apparently this was supposed to be a Fassbinder film, but he ended up only producing it and acting while Ulli Lommel directed. It uses Fassbinder's crew and there's talk that Fassbinder is the true auteur behind this film (see this unusually insightful IMDb comment thread). Certainly, Lommel's later filmography doesn't convince me that he was the driving force behind this. Only 48 checks on iCM too! Where is the Fassbinder mafia to vote this into next year's 500<400?
7/10

Image

42. The Hamiltons (2006)
Amateurish. The idea is interesting, as it seems to be aiming for a thoughtful examination of family relationships twinned with bleak horror, but it misses the mark badly with an stupid and insipid script, ugly camerawork/editing and poor acting. The guy playing the eldest brother is probably the worst actor I've seen in a film this month; he can't even stand in a scene without looking awkward. Some incest and splashes of gore stopped me hating it.

25. The Return of the Living Dead (1985) (rewatch) - I didn't think much of it when I saw it the first time, but kept thinking about it later on. - 7/10 (formerly 5/10)
26. Jacob's Ladder - This film gets namedropped quite a bit, so I finally decided to watch it. Albeit somewhat predictable, I did not see the mystery/twist aspect to be that important. Good, thought-provoking, well acted film. - 7/10

    If you guys want to squeeze in a really depraved piece of filmmaking, I suggest you watch Cold Fish by Sion Sono.

    Well, it is his only film that's worth watching. At least from what I've seen so far.
    My father didn’t have the skill of a professional cameraman. The result? Avant-garde cinema.

    What precisely did you find to love about this film? I thought it repulsive on just about every level.

    It was supposed to be repulsive. I was amazed at how something so cruel and hateful could be so entertaining. I mean hell, it was fucking hilarious at times.

    Sitting through 146 min of unrelenting repulsiveness is not my idea of fine entertainment or hilariousness for that matter. I guess you loved his misogynistic message?

    It's been a few years but wasn't the misogynistic moments coupled with cheerful music? That might have made it sarcastic.

    If not, I have no problem if a hateful film has hateful views. It's when stuff tries to pass off hateful views as being normal, or the good thing to do.

    Not much cheerful music while the raping and various other forms of sexual assault ensued. And what's up about the scene where
    Spoiler: click to toggleShow
    the older fish guy rapes the wife of the protagonist, then she returns to her husband, feeling all invigorated and cheerful?
    And let's not forget that touching scene where the protagonist
    Spoiler: click to toggleShow
    beats up and rapes his wife after first having knocked his own daughter unconscious
    - no cheerful music there for you. Don't try to tell me this was sarcasm - it certainly did not feel that way to this viewer.

    Like I said, this was a hateful film. Of course you're gonna be repulsed by it. Rape is one of the worst things you can do to another human, so of course a hateful film would have that. It's a lot more disgusting when there's a romance film with a guy (a sympathetic character) following and/or assaulting a woman, which makes her want him, and the film makes this look like a good message.

    I can something similar to this with music. Boyd Rice is a neo-nazi who wears shirts that says RAPE on it. He established himself as a piece of shit, of course he'll do shitty things. Someone who establishes himself as a good guy with good values turns out to be a rapist, fuck him.
