1001 Movies Before You Die Challenge

#1

Post by Knaldskalle »

As I stated in my movie goals for 2014, I intend to finish off the 1001 list this year. To help me achieve this I thought I'd host an unofficial 1001 challenge to start off the year. Anyone interested in the list, working on the list or just mildly bored is welcome to join the quest to finish off this list:

Image

Goal:

Watch as many movies from the 1001 Movies You Must See Before You Die list as possible! Films that have been on the list but no longer are count as well.

Rules:
- A feature film (Anything 40 minutes or over) counts as one entry
- A total of 90 minutes of short films count as one entry
- For Mini-Series (40 minute episodes or longer) each episode counts as an entry.
- For Mini-Series with shorter episodes, the 90 minute rule applies.
- No rewatches

Challenge runs from January 1st - January 31st 2014.

2. Knaldskalle - 27
3. Cocoa - 16

My goal is to watch 25 titles.

EDIT: I just realized I'm 28 away from the Gold. I'm going for that.

This should be the jump start I need. I have 142 left and will finish by year's end, regardless of how many relationships it could ruin.

5. The Ear (Kachyna, 1970). This was really good! Parallels the paranoid thrillers of Hollywood of the same age in interesting ways.

6. Oklahoma! (Zinnemann, 1955). Well, I guess Rod Steiger was good, but that's not saying much. Really not my kind of musical, I much prefer the older Busby Berkeley ones. "Oh what a beautiful morning" is a catchy tune, though.

7. Wake in Fright (Kotcheff, 1970). Scathing portrait of Australia that manages to come across as not inaccurate (or at least that's my impression as a furriner).

Dunno, could be. I think most people are busy with other challenges and real life. I know I'm feeling a little challenged out after Octohorror, Noir-vember and Silent December.

8. The Draughtsman's Contract (Greenaway, 1982). Oh I luvs me some Greenaway. He has a wonderfully absurd take on things, combined with an acute sense of imagery. The score for the movie reminded me of another Greenaway I saw recently, but I can't remember if it's ZOO or Belly of an Architect. It has the same rhythmic quality.

9. Do The Right Thing (Lee, 1989). St. Gloede commented on iCM that most of the characters were just plain annoying. Could be, but the thing is, I see these "characters" on a near daily basis, not in Bed-Stuy, but Harlem and the characterizations in the movie are only slightly exaggerated. I read somewhere (IMDb?) that Spike Lee was all about being anti-white, but it seems to me he (gently) skewers every black stereotype in the book and at the same time presents the great diversity of black communities in New York (he could even have included black Latinos and black Caribbean immigrants, not to mention African immigrants) and their sometimes strained relations with the people who live off them (I'm thinking of Turturro's character in particular here).

It was interesting to see the 80s style again, though I'm glad it's a thing of the past (those colors, ugh!).

1. The Seventh Victim (1943) 8/10

2. Vampyr (1932) 4/10 - to be honest, I almost fell asleep numerous times throughout the film. It wasn't till after an hour mark, that I found the film somewhat engaging. There's something about early '30s horror film that almost always make me disinterested. Not my style, but some of the shots were visually pleasing.

3. The Grapes of Wrath (1940) 5/10 - not a fan of the book, but the film did well at trying to cram everything major that was present in the book from what I could recall. The film was well shot and captured the gritty atmosphere.

Films Watched
1. The Seventh Victim (1943) 8/10
2. Vampyr (1932) 4/10

4. Ghost Busters (1984) 6/10 - It slightly bothers me that this is not called Ghostbusters without a space on icm.
5. Ba wang bie ji (1993) 6/10 - Farewell My Concubine

Both films were good overall, but while there were great scenes, there were also moments that made me lose some interest throughout each.
Films Watched
1. The Seventh Victim (1943) 8/10
2. Vampyr (1932) 4/10
3. The Grapes of Wrath (1940) 5/10
4. Ghost Busters (1984) 6/10
5. Ba wang bie ji (1993) 6/10

6. Rocky (1976) 8/10 - I wasn't expecting this to be such a romantic movie; I love a good romance! I almost cried at the end :'(

7. The Rocky Horror Picture Show (1975) 6/10 - What did I just watch... I was liking it until Rocky Horror was introduced. It then went a little downhill for me. I like camp, so the film wasn't bad overall for me.
