I had just seen 'Vif-argent', I didn't know Cecilia Mangini was debuting in front of the camera in a key, most memorable supporting role at the age of 91, and after watching it I kept thinking, what a beautiful, striking presence she is (the director definitely chose her for a reason), one of my favorite film directors, one of the greatest living filmmakers...

...and then I read your post I discovered her films as part of a small retrospective which included some of her most famous shorts, including 'La Canta delle Marane' and 'Tommaso' my personal favorites - this trailer highlights the shorts included in that program: https://vimeo.com/160710831

I knew in the back of my mind that you valued her films greatly, jd. I have been reading several articles over these last couple of days that give some insight into her socially-concerned, politically-attuned perspectives. Her activism against the pollution of the steel industry in Taranto in recent years was highlighted. Quite obviously a committed and remarkable lady, even into her later years.

Of her directed works, I've only seen 'Stendalì: Suonano ancora' (1960). Certainly one of my viewing highlights of last year! I look forward to seeing more of her work, especially 'Tommaso'.

DAMN RIP. Been a rough couple of weeks with regards to celebrity passing's.

I suppose Christopher Plummer is fated to always being remembered most for The Sound of Music, but it was only one moment in a very long and varied career. I especially enjoyed him as the icy villain in The Silent Partner and the quick-witted patriarch in Knives Out.

Oddly enough, this random movie included the final film appearances by both Plummer and Peter Fonda.

I had forgotten Plummer was even in Sound of Music until the notices of his death, but then it is not a film that means anything or has any importance to me - while obviously a classic to others.

Oddly enough the first films that came to me was the last film I saw him in, just a bit over a month ago, The Man Who Invented Christmas, which is not a particularly strong film, though good enough and with Plummer shining as Dickens' vision of Scrooge. He was really delivering to the end.

My mind then went to my favourite film in which he stars, namely The Man Who Would Be King, though of course he was only supporting, and my mind started jumping to see where he was the lead and where he really stood out. I thought about Beginners, where he has a great performance, and steals the show completely, but once again as supporting.

I have seen him in 25 films, and in only two of them he was credited first. One being Murder by Decree - which was the first major role that came to mind, and the other being the titular character in The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus - which I had completely forgotten in the moment, and while he is not really the lead character, he was spectacular.

Does anyone have any recommendations for films in which Plummer is the lead?

An excellent point. Every movie I've liked him in, he played a supporting role. Some people are just better in those roles. I remember reading some critic who wrote that Brad Pitt was a mediocre leading man but a superlative supporting actor. But that's a discussion for a different thread.
