Director families

#1

Post by Onderhond » August 28th, 2020, 9:47 am

Watched Brandon Cronenberg's Antiviral yesterday, that got me wondering if there are many other examples where father/mother - son/daughter both made it into the director chair. I didn't get far:

- Brandon & David Cronenberg (duh)
- Sofia & Francis Ford Coppola
- Kenta & Kinji Fukasaku
- Goro & Hayao Miyazaki

I'm sure I'm forgetting (or am unaware) of a bunch, so any good resources on this? Do you guys have more (I'm sure you do). No broader family ties (like nephews), also no brothers/sisters. But grandparent/grandchild relations might be interesting too.

Also extra bonus points for finding co-directed films (like Kenta & Kinji Fukasaku doing Battle Royale II together).

Shoot!

David Lynch / Jennifer Lynch off the top of my head.

Weird. Somehow I'd convinced myself they weren't related, because it's a duo I immediately thought of and went "oh, but they're only sharing the same last name". :D

@cinephage: thanks!

The Coppola family is broader. Count Roman, another son of Francis Ford, and Gia, her granddaughter, as well. Both directors and writers. And then there's Nicolas Cage, nephew of Francis Ford, and a famous actor with one directing credit. And there's more, it's like the ultimate clan in the industry.

Another example: Luis Buñuel - Juan Luis Buñuel (son)

Also: Paul Verhoeven - Michael Verhoeven (son). But this case is curious because it's not the Paul Verhoeven we all know, but a German director who mostly worked in the 50s. His grandchildren are actors and directors as well, it's like a lesser known Coppola clan.

The son of Agnes Varda and Jacques Demy, Mathieu Demy, has 1 feature credit and has also been directing shorts and TV episodes.

One of the most notable must be Mohsen Makhmalbaf and Samira Makhmalbaf. His other daughter, Hana Makhmalbaf also directed 2 features + a documentary, and his son Maysam has 1 documentary from 2000.

Gösta Ekman (mostly known as an actor, but has one directorial credit and also worked as a stage director)
Hasse Ekman (son)
Gösta Ekman (grandson) (mainly an actor, but I see 8 directorial credits on imdb. Memorably once claimed he was famous already as a sperm)
Mikael Ekman (grandson)

You've also got Peter Hyams, best known for the many action and sci-fi movies he made like Capricorn One, Outland and Timecop, and his son John Hyams who made the two best Universal Soldier movies (no joke, Universal Soldier: Day of Reckoning is legit a really good movie more influenced by Gaspar Noe than anything else probably).

- George P. Cosmatos (Rambo: First Blood Part II; Tombstone) and his son Panos Cosmatos (Beyond the Black Rainbow; Mandy)

- Ridley Scott and his son Luke Scott (the latter directed the 2016 sci-fi film Morgan)

- Ivan Reitman and his son Jason Reitman

And I was gonna mention Peter & John Hyams, but I see that flavo got there first.

Loving the internet hive mind! Thanks for all the suggestions, some really surprising ones (like the Cosmatos duo).

When I checked who played the role of Alejandro Jodorowsky in Poesía Sin Fin, I turned out to be Adan Jodorowsky (his son), also director of two short films.
