Mika Ninagawa month!

01. 4.5* - Diner [Dainâ] by Mika Ninagawa (2019)
Weird and full of wonder. Ninagawa's Diner is dark and outrageous, but the extremely colorful and bold direction give it a brighter appeal and a certain lightness you would not expect from a film like this. Ninagawa once again proves she is one of Japan's most talented active directors, a true delight.

02. 4.0* - No Longer Human [Ningen Shikkaku: Dazai Osamu to 3-nin no Onnatachi] by Mika Ninagawa (2019)
Interesting biopic on Osamu Dazai, one of Japan's famous writers. Like many of its peers, Ninagawa's film exploits the scandals around its central figure rather than laud its subject with praise and admiration, but that just makes things more interesting. Add the beautiful cinematography, a fine score and a superb cast and you have another winner.

Quelque part quelqu'un (1972) Somewhere, Someone - 9
Shui jing ren (1983) Portrait in Crystal - 8,5
Anti-Clock (1979) - 8,5
Ich bin den Sommer über in Berlin geblieben (1994) I Stayed in Berlin All Summer - 8,5

These were my four highest scores this month (out of 89 features total, lock-down has me locked in)
Three with female directors, which is nice. I am kinda focussing on that (with 74 female directed features seen this year so far/already), but the fact that I liked these the most is still a good surprise.

Anti-Clock is an amazing experimental feature that calls to mind both Peter Watkins and David Cronenberg, but in a style that is still uniquely its own. It has an intelligent future vision, but focusses for a great deal on psychology of despair. Quelque part Quelqu'un has got more that it's fair share of despair, so I guess I am both drawn to that and impressed when it is pulled off in a unique and sensitive way that rings a particular bell with me. The first feature of Angela Schanelec is a touch more lighthearted, but still is about... uncertain... feelings. I love her minimalistic style, and she was clearly knowing what she was doing right from the start. Nice to see some of her earlier acting work too this month (like in Die Familie oder Schroffenstein (1984)). I started the month with a few wuxia films, and Portrait in Crystal was the clear winner there, an amazing cult discovery on the level of Bastard Swordsman, so much to enjoy, so much silly stuff, but better, also so much brutal stuff, constant jaw dropping in a mode of film where weirdness is already default.

Sounds like fun! Maybe you should try Ronny Yu's The Trail (also 1983). Bit closer to the horror side maybe, but all these films tend to blend together different genres.

This month was a rebirth of my love for film. I cannot stress the quality of these films. It's almost impossible for me to position the top 5, they're all 5 candidates for my top 100 movies. Some of them for my top 10. I was just woozy watching some of these. Rivette does a mostly all female character recast of the Revenger's Tragedy, and makes them pirates, and all dressed in high fashion. WTAF, and it works, boy does it work, crazy sensual and delinquent, mind...blown... I liked the film in position number 6 so much that I went and bought the original poster online straight after watching it, Violent City, full Bronson, one of the best original soundtracks I've ever heard (Morricone), Sollima absolutely ROCKS, got several of his westerns on my top list and now this. He's in the Pantheon, one of the shiny ones.

Not a great fan of Ronny Yu's work so far, but I'll see if I can get to it, soon-ish (otherwise it'll end up at the end of my bottomless que)... wanted to dig a bit more into the horror side of things anyway (black magic, black magic 2, hex, bewitched and seeding of a ghost still to see!!! way behind on things as always, and I expect a lot more from these titles)

Yu is a bit all over the place, but I liked this one. Double checked though and I had it confused with Peacock King (1988). I would give that one preference as that one is probably closer to the films you mentioned. :sweat:

April was a very strong month, but only 3 new actual favorites... though a larger drop off between the 2nd and 3rd films.
I did have a rare watch that resulted in a perfect 10. I usually have to rewatch something for it to ultimately result in a 10, and this was no exception, but it was ~9+ on ftv. I rewatched 2 days later and it was elevated slightly after I absorbed more detail and nuance. My last 10s might have been back in 2018 (Christiane F. and Der Fan and the later only became a 10 on my third viewing), so this is somewhat significant.

Seems like a lot of people had good months - for film that is. Maybe being forced to limit our experiences is helping some of us appreciate them more? Anyway I nearly always find some great films and this past month was no exception, though I kind of feel like it could have been even better. Bikini Spring Break (Jared Cohn, 2012) What's worse than an Asylum rip-off of a big-budget SF/action flick? An Asylum rip-off of Spring Breakers, that's what. Worst film I've seen since...???... and the first 1 I've given out this year.

Interesting biopic on Osamu Dazai, one of Japan's famous writers. Like many of its peers, Ninagawa's film exploits the scandals around its central figure rather than laud its subject with praise and admiration, but that just makes things more interesting. Add the beautiful cinematography, a fine score and a superb cast and you have another winner.
Thank you for the review. I did not have this on my radar and became intrigued, because I have the title-giving novel on my shelf waiting to be read. I have also not seen anything from Mika Ninagawa so far (up to today I had only heard of Helter Skelter); is NLH a reasonable first step into her work?

As for how good it is as an introductory film, I guess that depends. For the average IMCfer, I think it's probably the ideal film. Not a contemporary setting, a somewhat artistic topic, stylistically clear but not as extreme as her other films. It gives you a good idea of what Ninagawa stands for, without getting the full, over-the-top treatment, which might be a bit overwhelming. If, on the other hand, you love more pronounced, contemporary films, I'd say Helter Skelter is the one to go for. And if you want something lighter/weirder, Diner is the most obvious pick.

I like them all though, so it's not an easy choice :)

Ah nice, I can totally see why Limite would be a favorite of yours! I'm actually eager to rewatch it, think I would get even more out of it a second time. Wasn't La region centrale a favorite of yours too?
