whom shall we find
Sufficient? who shall tempt with wand’ring feet
The dark unbottom’d infinite Abyss,
And through the palpable obscure find out
His uncouth way, or spread his aerie flight,
Upborn with indefatigable wings,
Over the vast abrupt, ere he arrive
The happy Ile?

Well here he is skidded out onto the Zone like a planchette on a Ouija board, and what shows up inside the empty circle in his brain might string together into a message, might not, he'll just have to see.

I managed to see 52 films in February. The major trend was catching up with 2019 films in preparation for the forum poll, and as expected last year dominates ... completely. I have also been catching up on Chinese cinema, but based on films that hit home, you can barely tell. :(

Martin Eden (2019, Pietro Marcello)
8.5s
Portrait de la jeune fille en feu / Portrait of a Lady of Fire (2019, Céline Sciamma)

Focused on finishing the Academy winner lists. Perhaps because of that not the best of months with only three movies that I considered to be particular good (8/10 or better). Some other worthwhile movies (7/10) here and there as well, but also a lot of average and below average stuff.

The Great Waltz (1938)
Cleopatra (1963)
Ordinary People (1980)
ICM
April Challenge: Image
But at the bottom, the immanent philosopher sees in the entire universe only the deepest longing for absolute annihilation, and it is as if he clearly hears the call that permeates all spheres of heaven: Redemption! Redemption! Death to our life! and the comforting answer: you will all find annihilation and be redeemed!

Dead Man's Shoes (2004) https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0419677/?ref_=rt_li_tt

Gave both of these an 8 out of 10

Exceptional month. A rare perfect score and finally some solid proof that 2019 was indeed a good year for film.

Image

01. 5.0* - Promare by Hiroyuki Imaishi (2019)
Imaishi's big return to the world of cinema. He's a little older, but still every bit as wild and dynamic. Promare is almost twice the length of Dead Leaves, but it's just as unrestrained. An onslaught of chaos and insanity, hammering away at breakneck speed. Some people will cave under the weight of the film, I just hope his next one won't take another 15 years. Promare is a dream come true.

Image

02. 4.5* - Chiwawa [Chiwawa-san] by Ken Ninomiya (2019)
Ken Ninomiya's second future is a blistering confirmation of the man's enormous talent. Vibrant, dynamic, colorful and in your face, but never without heart. Ninomiya's films are truly one of a kind. Clearly one of the rising talents of Japanese cinema and I'm glad that Chiwawa wasn't the disappointment if so easily could've been.

Image

03. 4.0* - Gretel & Hansel by Oz Perkins (2020)
Stark and atmospheric reinterpretation of several Grimm fairytales. Oz Perkins' style is quite minimal, but very precise and effective. Beautiful cinematography and a killer soundtrack make this a very dark and moody film, which nails the balance between its fantasy and horror elements. A very nice surprise indeed.

04. Image

4.0* - Lost in Love [Ru Ying Sui Xin] by Jianqi Huo (2019)
Very stylish and heartfelt romantic drama about the precarious balance between passion and trust. Though Huo is known to be a very skilled romance director, this film felt closer to Yibai Zhang's early work, sporting a more contemporary, urban vibe. Great cinematography and superb central performances make this a worthy entry in Huo's oeuvre.

Out of 26 films and 1 documentary (my favorite viewing of the month actually). A mix of MUBI, TSPDT and the world cup.

4/5
Lektionen in Finsternis (Lessons of Darkness) (Herzog, 1992)

3.5/5 but might turn into a 4/5
Englar alheimsins (Angels of the Universe) (Friðriksson, 2000)

3.5/5
The Ballad of Narayama (Imamura, 1983)
Agantuk (The Stranger) (Ray, 1991)
Anatomy of a Murder (Preminger, 1959)
Primer (Carruth, 2004)
L' amour en fuite (Love on the Run) (Truffaut, 1979)

Too much good stuff last month! (excluded a lot of stuff which normally would have been on a such a list...) - also some duds this month; I watched Portrait of a Lady on Fire last month, and it's definitely the worst film I've seen from last year.

I've restricted the list to films I've given 8 or higher.

1. A Hidden Life (Terrence Malick, 2019)*
2. Magnificent Obsession (Douglas Sirk, 1954)
3. گبه / Gabbeh (Mohsen Makhmalbaf, 1996)
4. Uncut Gems (Josh & Bennie Safdie, 2019)
5. Journey to the West (Tsai Ming-Liang, 2014)
6. Nana (Valérie Massadian, 2011)
7. L'apollonide / House of Tolerance (Bertrand Bonnello, 2011)
8. Prince of Darkness (John Carpenter, 1987)
9. Der traumhafte Weg (Angela Schanelec, 2016)
10. Macao (Josef von Sternberg (& Nicolas Ray), 1952)
11. سکوت / The Silence (Mohsen Makhmalbaf, 1998)
12. The Emblazoned Apparitions (Phil Solomon, 2013)

* = theatrical

Such an amazing film this. I still don't understand why it remains so overlooked. The animation is gorgeous, the fantasy is creative, the mood is so peaceful, characters are lovely. And we've already gone through an 80s reappreciation period. Glad to see more support for this film

My favorite Park. Not quite as serious and wannabe dark as some of his other films, which made it a lot more enjoyable for me.

Mubi is showing a lot of post-war Kawashima movies at the moment. I think some are recently restored or have had me subs especially for Mubi.
