I can't call it a coincidence, but just yesterday I updated my Letterboxd list, filling in the last 3 months. Obviously, I am hoping for a few more discoveries, especially as I did not see a single 10/10...

65 + 1 films rated 8.5 or higher in 2019: https://letterboxd.com/gloede/list/firs ... -the-crop/

I favorited six films this year (9/10):

A Man and a Woman (1966)
They Shoot Horses, Don’t They? (1969)
Investigation of a Citizen Above Suspicion (1970)
Mishima: A Life in Four Chapters (1985)
Innocence (2004)
Shoplifters (2018)

These are „high 8/10“ from this year:

La roue (1923)
This Transient Life (1970)
The Fifth Seal (1976)
Hitler, ein Film aus Deutschland (1977)
Berlin Alexanderplatz (1980)
Alone in the Wilderness (2004)

An Elephant Sitting Still (2018)

My favorite film from the year 2019 so far is Parasite.

But at the bottom, the immanent philosopher sees in the entire universe only the deepest longing for absolute annihilation, and it is as if he clearly hears the call that permeates all spheres of heaven: Redemption! Redemption! Death to our life! and the comforting answer: you will all find annihilation and be redeemed!

Quite an easy list for me, as I prefer this setup to best op 2019 (production year) anyway. I'll be watching the best 2019 films in the coming years (they travel slow), so no point in focusing too much on that particular list right now. Anywhere, here they are: https://www.onderhond.com/blog/movies-2019-top

10. The Brand New Testament [Le Tout Nouveau Testament] (2015)
09. The White Girl (2017)
08. Last Sunrise (2019)
07. Godzilla: The Planet Eater [Gojira: Hoshi Wo Ku Mono] (2018)
06. A.I. Rising (2018)
05. Killing [Zan] (2018)
04. The Forest of Love [Ai-naki Mori de Sakebe] (2019)
03. Book of Birdie (2017)
02. Climax (2018)
01. Paris Is Us [Paris Est à Nous] (2019)

Two Netflix films in my Top 10 isn't bad at all. 4 Films that might appear in some other arthouse/genre cross-over lists, the rest I'm pretty sure is completely beyond the awareness of this board.

whom shall we find
Sufficient? who shall tempt with wand’ring feet
The dark unbottom’d infinite Abyss,
And through the palpable obscure find out
His uncouth way, or spread his aerie flight,
Upborn with indefatigable wings,
Over the vast abrupt, ere he arrive
The happy Ile?

Well here he is skidded out onto the Zone like a planchette on a Ouija board, and what shows up inside the empty circle in his brain might string together into a message, might not, he'll just have to see.

Only 5 9/10s and no 10/10s this year out of 329 movies (so far):

1. Damnation (Béla Tarr, 1988)
2. The Last Command (Josef von Sternberg, 1928)
3. The Browning Version (Anthony Asquith, 1951)
4. The Great Garrick (James Whale, 1937)
5. Days of Wine and Roses (Blake Edwards, 1962)

Hoping for better movie watching next year although this year is in line with 2018's stats (5 9/10s out of 361 films, no 10/10s). Ill try to become more adventurous and patient as I get distracted too easily while I watch films these days

Btw you've got two films at #71.
't was a matter of adding [*] before every film, it was. Many corrections follow'd upon initial shouting, they have. 't was one I missed. Thanks, I say to thee, good Sire.

It might very well just be me, but none of the pbs.twimg.com-hosted images are showing.

Hast thou written poems on 'The Scoundrel'? If thou hast, I 'member none.

Your imitation of life is more cherished than mine.

The pbs.twimg.com images came from twitta, at least the ones that didn't somehow inflate to about 4096x4096 which is too large even for my standards. They were showing up normally for me, but perhapst thou couldnst perceive them for thou hast no twitta account. Should be fixed now, let thine perception flow.

The Scoundrel - Search Scoundrel in this stinky app for some very bad poetry I hope is at least somehow mildly amusing browsing in its badness, yes? If you agreed - subscribe, we got more mildly amusing content coming right up

Evil Residents - Reply pending, check thread back in the future

Addressing the elephant in the castle, what made the change of 5 to 8 in the case of Evil Residents come about?
Resident Evil - 2.5 yrs ago I most likely had an excessively elitist-cynical view of such action films, a mind too pitifully stratified, biased, and judgemental to ease itself into letting go and enjoying the ride along with all the little pleasures in life that come to enhance the experience by spontaneously forging webs of thrilling connections, creating a childlike sense of astonishment for even the most basic things such as underground cities, rampant biotechnology, the decision games of a powerful AI & people, amnesia, pure survival within a claustrophobic, grungy environment with strange people that cannot be trusted, Milla's ass-kickery, the awesome soundtrack, a most exciting ending conveying vast scope and birthing perhaps the greatest "postmodern" postapocalyptic film series. . . . "So, we party when the sun goes low / Imminent annihilation sounds so dope" Xxo

American Honey - Mostly filmed right behind the shoulders or in front of a reticent beautiful girl exploring first love, the company of fellow partying teenagers selling magazines across beautiful redneck America, pop songs, dancing, fireworks, 'I Believe in Unicorns'-like textures, ... I just watched Rihanna's 'We Found Love' music video for the first time and I'd watch that first if I were you to give you some idea of what to expect if you do choose to watch it.

The dark unbottom’d infinite Abyss,
And through the palpable obscure find out
His uncouth way, or spread his aerie flight,
Upborn with indefatigable wings,
Over the vast abrupt, ere he arrive
The happy Ile?

Well here he is skidded out onto the Zone like a planchette on a Ouija board, and what shows up inside the empty circle in his brain might string together into a message, might not, he'll just have to see.

What a year it has been! I saw 330 movies for the first time in 2019, beating my previous record of 315 (still modest numbers compared to many others in this forum).

The Haunting
Tokyo Story

Spider-Jerk: Into the Spider-Shit
Kawaita Hana
Fuocoammare

Two I've changed my mind about:
SpoilerShow
The Incident (I wrote a very long review in some thread when I saw this)
Burning (I gave it a negative review initially because the first half is quite boring, but the second half was so good that it's stayed in my mind)

Two excellent non-movies:
SpoilerShow
The Deadwood TV series
The Chernobyl miniseries

The Lighthouse and especially Vitalina Varela are the only films that mattered. I saw the latter twice in one day.

15 films

Notable rewatches
Aladdin (1992) - 84 - no change

12 this year (comparing to 8, 14, and 16 for previous years; including feature-length films only), which is not bad. Most of them are recent films from the past few years that I only now had a chance to see. I think this means that I'm less and less likely to discover new favourites among older films, unless I'm rewatching them, though I certainly hope I'm wrong.

L'Inferno (1911)
Vitalina Varela (2019)
Eternity and a Day and At the First Breath of Wind are two of my all time top 250, as is Blue (by Kieslowski), though my sense is that this is not the one you mean.
Right, it's this one. From Kieslowski's trilogy, only Red is a favorite, but I really need to rewatch them some time.

Kieslowski is one of my all time favorites, even though his career was curtailed by death in his early 50’s while at the peak of his powers.
Though Double Life of Veronique is my personal favorite, I think that Blue is his most accomplished film, and an absolutely amazing work of cinema.

Well, this just went straight into the watch list... I was in Krabi for about a week in 1994. I'd be real interested to see what it looks like circa 2019.

A relatively quite weak year for me - far fewer films seen, and fewer great films, than the previous 2-3 years. This was primarily due to losing interest for several months starting in early summer, followed by family tragedy in the autumn, not because I became harder to please or found it harder to find good films.

Well, this just went straight into the watch list... I was in Krabi for about a week in 1994. I'd be real interested to see what it looks like circa 2019.
I was in Krabi in 1989, and went back last year to see an old friend who lives there. Still like the town alright, but the surrounding beach areas and islands have turned into complete tourist dumps, getting trashed by the hordes
Imagine standing exploring a small island by yourself 30 years ago only to return to the same small beach now full of tourist charter boats and roughly 1000 people. I could go on and on, but let's just say I won't be going back again.
What a shame...

The movie The Beach was probably the beginning of the end for that part of Thailand.
