And now I've seen Koreeda's "After Life." One more director down. I didn't particularly enjoy this and, given that the other Koreeda premises I read didn't interest me nearly as much as this one, I'm not too encouraged to dig further into his catalog.

July Challenge: Image
But at the bottom, the immanent philosopher sees in the entire universe only the deepest longing for absolute annihilation, and it is as if he clearly hears the call that permeates all spheres of heaven: Redemption! Redemption! Death to our life! and the comforting answer: you will all find annihilation and be redeemed!

My goals for 2020:

1. Platinum on They Shoot Pictures, Don’t They? -215 to go
2. Bronze on Yle News’ Best Finnish Films of All Time - 19 to go
3. All movies on a list with 50 films from 50 countries, chosen by my friend and myself to watch and discuss during the year in pubs -49 to go
+ Watch all unseen movies on 10+ official lists again - 15 to go
1. Platinum on They Shoot Pictures, Don’t They? - 64 to go. Watched 45 new films in June's TSPDT challenge. The challenge was surprisingly inspiring for me. Much ahead of schedule now, but that's very good, because I will be very busy at work next Fall.
2. Bronze on Yle News’ Best Finnish Films of All Time - Done!
3. All movies on a list with 50 films from 50 countries, chosen by my friend an myself to watch and discuss during the year in pubs - 25 to go. Just on schedule. Behind on pubs, though, as you'd suspect.
+ Watch all unseen movies on 10+ official lists again - 14 to go. Little progress. I'll do this as a bonus when/if I complete my numbered goals on time.

1. Watch at least 366 features
2. Reach platinum on TSPDT by March (69 to go)
3. From April, each month watch at least 25 films in a single challenge
4. Make it to the cinema at least 20 times
5. Watch all movies on 10+ lists (89 to go)
After June:
1. Ahead of target (475 features in 182 days) - am updating target to be 732 features to make it interesting (most I've done in a year is 560ish).
2. Completed TSPDT on the 19th March with Shoah. Delighted and proud to complete a really enriching experience.
3. Done it for 7 challenges (TSPDT, 1960s, Comedy, Western, 1950s, Doubling the Canon List and Women Directors).
4. I've been 9 times but not the year for this challenge! I won't be going to the cinema again in 2020. I want to replace it with a goal related to recent releases - will ponder.
5. Down from 59 to 13.

Since I didn't reach my goals from 2019, I'll try and pursue them in 2020.

1 - Reach gold on the They shoot zombies, don't they ? list (158 films to watch)

2 - get bronze on the <400 list : 80 movies to check.

3 - Get 6 more bronze medals (1910, Sundance Film Festival - Grand Jury Prize, Goya Awards, Belgian Film Awards, Silent but not forgotten, Spaghetti western)

4 - Finish iCM Forum's Favourite French Films list : https://www.icheckmovies.com/lists/icm+ ... htysparks/ (21 films to watch)
SpoilerShow
1 - 127 films to check, 31 checks since january... The update was certainly a big help...

2 - 68 more films to watch. 8 checks since last time, that's good.

3 - Get 6 3 more bronze medals (1910, Sundance Film Festival - Grand Jury Prize, Goya Awards, Belgian Film Awards, Silent but not forgotten, Spaghetti western) Hey, I did good with this one. :banana:

4 - Still 19 to watch. Slow progress here as well, but progress still.
1 - 124 films to watch...

2 - 67 more films to watch

3 - Get 6 3 more bronze medals (1910, Sundance Film Festival - Grand Jury Prize, Goya Awards, Belgian Film Awards, Silent but not forgotten, Spaghetti western)

4 - 19 films to watch... I didn't work on that one this month, but I'll try and catch up in July

Update through April:

1. Complete my project of watching a film from each year from 1919-2020 (currently on 1980, 40 films to go)
2. Bronze on TSPDT (39 films to go)
3. Rank in top 8,000 on every list (8 lists to go)
Update as of the end of June:

1. Complete my project of watching a film from each year from 1919-2020 (currently on 2003, 17 films to go)
2. Bronze on TSPDT (22 films to go)
3. Rank in top 8,000 on every list (7 lists to go)

I have been really focused on #1, which is helping a lot with #2. I'm hoping I can have this project finished by the end of July, but we'll see. I might be in the position this year where I'll actually need to come up with some bonus goals because I'm doing so well on the ones I set at the beginning of the year!

And down go Bruno Dumont ("Slack Bay") and Kiyoshi Kurosawa ("Cure") too. Can't say that I was wild about either film.

I've finally bottomed things out, with just a handful of IMDb lists left to complete the goal. Here's a breakdown of my progress, showing the number of checks needed at the beginning of the year, last month and today, with completed lists in bold, backslides in red and gains in green:

The push for Top 200 on every official listShow
1001 Movies You Must See Before You Die: 11-->0-->0

CineChile's 50 Best Chilean movies of all time: 1-->0-->0
Cinema Tropical's Best Latin American Films 2010-2019: 0-->0-->0
Empire's The 100 Best Films of World Cinema: 0-->1-->0
FOK!'s Film Top 250: 0-->1-->0
Harvard's Suggested Film Viewing: Narrative Films: 1-->0-->0
Hürriyet's The 100 Best Movies of Turkish Cinema: 0-->0-->0
IMDb's 1910s Top 50: 1-->0-->0

IMDb's Thrillers Top 50: 0-->0-->0
IMDb's Top 250: 0-->1-->0
IMDb's War Top 50: 0-->0-->1
Kinemathekverbund's The 100 Most Important German Films: 3-->0-->0
Livejournal's 100 Best Russian Movies: 1-->0-->0
Outlook India's Best Bollywood Films: 1-->0-->0
Reddit Top 250: 0-->1-->0
Rotten Tomatoes's Top 100 Movies of All Time: 0-->0-->0
Sight & Sound's The Greatest Films of All Time: 17-->0-->0
Taschen's 100 All-Time Favorite Movies: 1-->0-->0
Total Sci-Fi's The 100 Greatest Sci-Fi Movies: 2-->0-->0
TSPDT's 1,000 Greatest Films: 17-->0-->0

And the breakdown so far:

Goal: Top 200 on every official list
Films left at start of year: 66
Target pace to meet goal: 5.5 checks/month
Checks left last month: 10
Checks left currently: 6
Checks left at this point in 2019/2018/2017/2016/2015: 25/44/78/43/20
Current pace: 10.0 checks/month
Top 200 goals completed this month: 1001 Movies You Must See Before You Die, A.V. Club's The Best Movies of the 2010s, BBC's The 21st Century's 100 Greatest Films, Empire's The 100 Best Films of World Cinema, FOK!'s Film Top 250, IMDb's 1950s Top 50, IMDb's Top 250, and Reddit Top 250
Lists that have (re)appeared this month: 1001 Movies You Must See Before You Die, IMDb's Animation Top 50, and IMDb's War Top 50
Worst ranking this month: IMDb's Biography Top 50 (#253)
Best goal-related ranks: IMDb's Shorts Top 50, IMDb's Thrillers Top 50, Taschen's 100 All-Time Favorite Movies (#1) and IMDb's Drama Top 50 (#67)
Median ranking on all lists: #66 (BFI's 100 Science Fiction Films and TSPDT's 21st Century's Most Acclaimed Films) and #67 (UNESCO's Memory of the World and MDb's Drama Top 50)
Overall Ranking: 18-->16-->16

So just six checks to go, most of which I'm holding out for until nearer the end of the year in case the IMDb lists fluctuate in the meantime, obviating the need to see them. A few exceptions: Ford v Ferrari, which I'll be seeing in the next few days, and Cowboy Bebop: The Movie, which I"ll watch sometime later this summer after I finish the TV series. That'll take me down to three checks (two on the IMDb 1920s list and one on the IMDb War list), one of which will hopefully be covered by 1917, and the other two, well, we'll see by December.

2016 goals finished: 1 - 25 films (1990)
Specific directors seen: 2 - Sam Wood, Frank Lloyd

I don't remember what my Tin Awards goal was, or maybe I changed the number since I first set it. I have 33 lists, not 30 as my goal in my spreadsheet. :shrug:

Again, great progress overall, but not on many of the specific goals. Long films was again the best area of improvement, though I also finally made some significant progress on the 20+ list films. Surprised I made no progress on my watchlists, though. This coming quarter I have less on my plate workwise, and there are fewer games/polls on here that I intend to focus on, so I can select more films to watch that fit into these goals.

Having come back to the joys of cinema I might as well define goals for the second half of 2020.

1. TSPDT: See 100 movies, 730 -> 830
currently: 779 = 49/100 (with almost a year between check 730 and 731 :blink: )
2. ICM Forum's 500 <400: See 30 movies (might upgrade this one)
6/30 (after 1.5 years of no check)
3. TBD - Something going-to-cinema related

And now I've seen "Stranger by the Lake" and "Once Upon a Time in Anatolia" (both via Kanopy), so this knocks off Nuri Bilge Ceylan (finally!) and Alain Guiraudie. I liked "Anatolia" better.
SpoilerShow
The remaining names along with, according to TSPDT, their most renowned films.

Aleksey German (My Friend Ivan Lapshin)
Andrew Lau (Infernal Affairs)
Bing Wang (Tie Xi Qu: West of the Tracks)
Edgar Reitz (Heimat: A Chronicle of Germany)
Eduardo Coutinho (Twenty Years Later)
Fernando E. Solanas (The Hour of the Furnaces)
Irving Rapper (Now, Voyager)
Jackie Chan (Police Story)
Jacques Audiard (A Prophet)
Jin Xie (Two Stage Sisters)
João César Monteiro (Come and Go)
John M. Stahl (Leave Her to Heaven)
José Luis Guerín (In the City of Sylvia)
Kaige Chen (Yellow Earth)
Lav Diaz (Evolution of a Filipino Family)
Miguel Gomes (Tabu)
Nikita Mikhalkov (Burnt by the Sun)
Patricio Guzmán (Nostalgia for the Light)
Raj Kapoor (Awaara)
Ruy Guerra (Os Fuzis)
Samira Makhmalbaf (The Apple)
Sergey Bondarchuk (War and Peace)
Serif Gören (Yol)
Shinji Sômai (Typhoon Club)
Stanley Kwan (Center Stage)
Walter Salles (Central Station)
Werner Schroeter (Der Tod der Maria Malibran)
Yilmaz Güney (co-directed Yol)
Zhuangzhuang Tian (The Horse Thief)

And borderline names where I've seen shorts and/or short features, but not really a full feature.

Claude Lanzmann (Shoah)
Jonas Mekas (Diaries, Notes and Sketches)
Manoel de Oliveira (Abraham's Valley)
Margarethe von Trotta (Die Bleierne Zeit)*
Nanni Moretti (Caro Diario)
Zhangke Jia (Platform)

*I saw "The Lost Honor of Katharina Blum," which she CO-directed, but I'm sure she was playing second banana to Schlöndorff...half-credit, at best.

Once Upon A Time in Anatolia is such a beautiful movie, I'm surprised it isn't more popular here.
