It is the second of February and we have no thread to talk about our favorite new discoveries of the last month?!

This was an absolutely incredible film month for me. Thanks in part to an operation I had the time to watch 73 films (which must be my highest amount of films seen in a month in years), and of course, with this many films the chances of seeing great works goes considerably up.

Rohmer dominated, I saw 5 of his films, finally catching up to some of his best regarded late work, finishing his Comedy and Proverbs series and watching 3 out of 4 "seasons".

9s
La femme de l'aviateur / The Aviator's Wife (1981, Eric Rohmer)
Egy erkölcsös éjszaka / A Very Moral Night (1977, Karoly Makk)

8.5s
Dvoryanskoe gnezdo / Nest of Gentry (1969, Andrey Konchalovskiy)
Conte d'hiver / A Tale of Winter (1992, Eric Rohmer)
Bílá paní / The White Lady (1965, Zdenek Podskalský)
Tisícrocná vcela / The Millenium Bee (1983, Juraj Jakubisko)
L'ami de mon amie / Boyfriends and Girlfriends (1987, Eric Rohmer)
Smutecní slavnost / Funeral Ceremonies (1969, Zdenek Sirový)
Quelque part quelqu'un / Somewhere, Someone (1972, Yannick Bellon)

Top 8s
Shûu / Sudden Rain (1954, Mikio Naruse)
Conte de printemps / A Tale of Springtime (1990, Eric Rohmer)
Postav dom, zasad strom / Build a House, Plant a Tree (1980, Juraj Jakubisko)
Ôsaka no yado / An Inn at Osaka (1954, Heinosuke Gosho)
Kamennyy tsvetok / The Stone Flower (1946, Aleksandr Ptushko)
Conte d'été / A Summer's Tale (1996, Eric Rohmer
Ze soboty na nedeli / From Saturday to Sunday (1931, Gustav Machaty)
New old (1979, Pierre Clémenti)
Takekurabe / Growing Up (1955, Heinosuke Gosho)
Dyn Amo (1972, Stephen Dwoskin)

Holy moly. 45 feature films seen in 31 days. I think my record until now would have been between 10 and 15. The challenges really kept me going and I was able to add a lot of favorites: Witness for the prosecution, Grave of the fireflies, All about eve and Persona. Next to that an increase of 6! awards. My initial goals for 2019 are going to be shattered really. I am also on a total of 1.045 checks now with 822 official ones placing me on rank 12.279.
I think my goals to see 250 feature length movies will be done in july, my goal to reach top 10.000 could even be done this or next month.
My Blu Ray collection was also started this month with the purchase of an actual blu ray player and next to this:

Criterion: Blue is the warmest color
Criterion: Stalker
Criterion: 12 Angry Men
Arrow: Donnie Darko (Steelbook)
Arrow: The Human Condition trilogy
Arrow: Network

Dr. Strangelove criterion is also on its way.

That's it for this month. Cheers!
[*][*][*][*][*] Favorite
[*][*][*][*] Very good
[*][*][*] Good
[*][*] Okay
[*] Bad

Month started out slow and weak for me, with lots of crappy sci-fi (deliberate) and a serious cold, but the last 3 weeks have been pretty terrific, and extreme cold has kept me inside all the time, just watching more stuff. For once I will include ratings, just because -

10:

1. Roma (Alfonso Cuarón, 2018)
2. Velikiy uteshitel / The Great Consoler (Lev Kuleshov, 1933)

9:

3. Kramasha (Amit Dutta, 2007) SHORT
4. Ivan (Aleksandr Dovzhenko, 1932)
5. Manbiki kazoku / Shoplifters (Hirokazu Koreeda, 2018)
6. Universal Citizen (Peter Thompson, 1987) SHORT
7. Universal Hotel (Peter Thompson, 1986) SHORT
8. If Beale Street Could Talk (Barry Jenkins, 2018)
9. Vesyolye rebyata / Moscow Laughs / Jolly Fellows (Grigoriy Aleksandrov, 1984)
10. Dishonored (Josef von Sternberg, 1931)

HONORABLE MENTION 8/9

Aerograd (Aleksandr Dovzhenko, 1935)
The Brother From Another Planet (John Sayles, 1984)
A Burlesque on Carmen (Charles Chaplin, 1915) SHORT
Entuziazm (Simfoniya Donbassa) / Enthusiasm (Dziga Vertov, 1931)
Essai d'ouverture (Luc Moullet, 1988) SHORT
Étude cinégraphique sur une arabesque (Germaine Dulac, 1929) SHORT
Get Out of the Car (Thom Andersen, 2010) SHORT
Kosmicheskiy reys: Fantasticheskaya novella / Cosmic Rays (Vasily Zhuravlyov, 1936)
Lmno (Robert Breer, 1978) SHORT
Noviciat (Noël Burch, 1965) SHORT
Philips-Radio (Joris Ivens, 1931) SHORT
Der Schweigende Stern / The Silent Star (Kurt Maetzig, 1960)
Seance on a Wet Afternoon (Byran Forbes, 1964)
Seryy Volk end Krasnaya Shapochka / Grey Wolf & Little Red Riding Hood (Garri Bardin, 1991) SHORT
Show Boat (George Sidney, 1951)
Smile, Darn Ya, Smile! (Rudolf Ising, 1931) SHORT
Sorry to Bother You (Boots Riley, 2018)
Three Little Bops (Friz Freleng, 1957) SHORT
Thunderbolt (Josef von Sternberg, 1929)
Two Portraits (Peter Thompson, 1982) SHORT
Wind Vane (Chris Welsby, 1972) SHORT
World (Jordan Belson, 1970) SHORT

Most Valuable Re-Watches

Matinee (Joe Dante, 1993) 7>10
Act of Violence (Fred Zinnemann, 1949) 9>10
In a Lonely Place (Nicholas Ray, 1950) 8>9

Also re-watched Logan's Run (probably 4th-5th time) and Capricorn One (2nd I think); both improved marginally (both rated 7 - worth seeing but certainly significantly flawed) but I continue to be more and more interested in the period in science fiction between 2001 and Star Wars. Digging out more of the obscurities in this period will probably be a priority this year.

Oh and I found Gloede's list amusing, because I've seen all of the Rohmers, and nothing else. And my ratings are essentially the same on them, though La femme de l'aviateur is the only one I've seen at all recently. I think the walk/spying in the park sequence might be my favorite single scene in all of Rohmer.

The standout viewing for me was Ode to the Goose, which I can’t recommend enough. Definitely invokes comparison with Burning, particularly through the common mystery/sexual tension/thriller combo, and interesting given the similar histories and known friendship between the two directors. Another film by Zhang showing extraordinary command of narrative.

Yes. And what Audrey Totter was to Gloria Grahame.

The Assassin #1 of the decade huh. Wow. I loved it myself, and would probably pick Hou as one of the top 10-20 living directors, but I can't quite go there. I ought to see it again of course, like I ought to see a lot of his films again. Wish I'd managed to see it in the cinema in 35mm.

2. Too Early/Too Late (Jean-Marie Straub & Daniélè Huillet, 1982)
3. The Leopard Man (Jacques Tourneur, 1943)
4. Que le diable nous emporte / Tempting Devils (Jean-Claude Brisseau, 2018)
5. On the Beach at Night Alone (Hong Sang-Soo, 2017)
6. First Reformed (Paul Schrader, 2017)*
7. Before My Eyes (Mani Kaul, 1989)
8. The Grand Bizarre (Jodie Mack, 2018)
9. Iguana (Monte Hellman, 1988)
10. Possible Worlds (Robert Lepage, 2000)
11. Song To Song (Terence Malick, 2017)
12. Gens du Lac (Jean-Marie Straub, 2018)
13. Man of Marble (Andrzej Wajda, 1977)*

HM: Point de Gaze (Jodie Mack, 2012), Laurence Anyways (Xavier Dolan, 2012), BlacKkKlansman (Spike Lee, 2018)

Le fond de l'air est rouge

The Narrow Margin
My Winnipeg
Mùi du du xanh
Tian guo ni zi
Salaam Cinema
The Bitter Tea Of General Yen
Horse Feathers
Waking Life
Wild River
The Gunfighter
ICM
April Challenge: Image
But at the bottom, the immanent philosopher sees in the entire universe only the deepest longing for absolute annihilation, and it is as if he clearly hears the call that permeates all spheres of heaven: Redemption! Redemption! Death to our life! and the comforting answer: you will all find annihilation and be redeemed!

It was already a favourite the first time around, but a rewatch always does wonders for me when it comes these kind of films when I can go in knowing exactly what to expect and what kind of mood I need to be in. I haven't seen a Hou I haven't loved yet, all 10 that I've seen I've rated 8+.

Nothing I really 'loved', but really enjoyed Berlin Syndrome and Searching. On the non film side of things, I also watched Haunting of Hill House, which wasn't great but enjoyable, and Planet Earth which was great.

Decent start to the year. Work is work, and there's been at least one major snow event every week up here in PA which might have hindered my theatrical trips a bit, but still I persevere!

1. Shoplifters (2018)
2. Le doulos (1963)
3. Mr. Arkadin (1955)
4. If Beale Street Could Talk (2018)
5. Police Story (1985)
6. La vi de boheme (1992)
7. The Happy Breed (1944)
8. Lenny (1974)
9. Fiddler on the Roof (1971)
10. Summer 1993 (2018)

Most beneficial re-watches (all upgraded to 8 or 9):

The Only Son (1936)
Laura (1944)
Bigger than Life (1955)
The Birds (1963)

Incredibly happy you saw and loved The Agitators, Matthew, I wasn''t even aware I had championed it that hard. Can't wait to see The Favourite either. Hoping to catch it at the cinema, but they are only showing it at 5 inconvenient times at the arthouse, spread over the month.

@Lonewolf - Thanks for the concern. It was not serious at all, just had to be done.

2. Nattvardsgästerna / Winter Light (1963, Ingmar Bergman)
3. The Ballad of Buster Scruggs (2018, Joel & Ethan Coen)
4. Bacalaureat / Graduation (2016, Cristian Mungiu)
5. Roma (2018, Alfonso Cuaron)
6. Sorry to Bother You (2018, Boots Riley)
7. Glass (2019, M. Night Shyamalan)
8. Coraline (2009, Henry Selick)
9. George Washington (2000, David Gordon Green)
The gauzy thoughts of the sturdy Scots
Wrestle with the elements
Up on the trail high
I need to know where does it go
How do I get there and what will I find?
