Personal Film Goals for 2018

#41

Post by PGonzalez » January 6th, 2018, 1:58 am

For the first time I actually thought my goals through, which means it will only be more mind-boggling when I don't reach them by the end of the year. They are:
  • Reach rank 5500 (currently 7530)
  • Have 1 check in 10 of the 17 lists I currently don't have a check on (plus one for every new list adopted that meets the criteria)
  • Reach 40 awards (currently 27)
  • Reach 180 checks at the Cahiers yearly lists (currently 135)
  • Reach 220 checks at Rosenbaum's (currently 193)
  • Reach 300 checks at S&S (currently 257)
  • Participate at the World Cup post-February
  • Reach bronze at Público's list
  • Reach silver at the Cahiers 100

    Extra credit
  • Go as far as possible in Bénard da Costa's "The Movies of my Life"
  • Make progress in non-american country lists

I don't expect to watch a huge amount of films this year (I've been focusing on TV mainly for the past year) but my long-term goal is to complete the forum's 1001 top movies list. I'm currently at 706/1001. There will be an update in March but there were 80 new entries last year so it's a fairly stable list.

I'd love to also work on 500<400 but it's a bit daunting because of the huge changes in the list every year.

Hmm.

1. Gold on TSPDT list (82)
2. Some more awards maybe? 130 is a nice number. Currently at 112.
3. Finally complete The Russian Guild of Critics and Roger Eberts lists. (7 and 27 movies)
4. Enjoy some good movies.

A late happy new year from me. :party:

1. Have my favourite films list reach 1000
2. Finish 2017 and 2018's ICM Forum's 1001 Favourite Movies list
3. Finish 2018's TSPDT list
4. Remain in the Top 10 for Doubling the Canon and reach the Top 10 for <400 (currently 13th)

I haven't had very focused goals in a few years, but I've been slowly getting some of my passion back for film, so my aim is just to watch more. But specifically focusing on:

- watching more 2017/2018 films, particularly more foreign and underseen stuff as I miss out on a lot
- getting through my backlog, using the randomizer on my list of owned films on lists and watching whatever it throws up
- completing lists/gaining awards, not picking anything in particular but just looking at my progress on lists using the iCM Enhancer script and reaching the closest milestones. I've been kind of missing completing stuff
- finish TSPDT again (24 to go!)

Exactly what I wanted to say. I saw 152 movies in 2016 and 151 in 2017, if this figure drops to half after this year it will mean that I've made some actual progress.

(Gosh, this really makes it seem like an AA meeting)

I watched 126 films last year and that was my lowest amount in a year EVER. I feel like I don't have enough time for film anymore or I'm too depressed and I barely watch any :P

152 is hardly the point of addiction... sounds more like casual viewing to me - less than 1 per 2 days? I'm in my down period now and I've already watched like 3 films today.

I think my high was last year? I posted somewhere about the exact number, I think it was 2960. Never actually hit the big 3K but always been close. Still I've always got mad respect for anyone who can bang through over 1000.

I consider I watch too many movies and I'm around 500 per year... I don't particularly admire people who are even more into it than I am.

I'm more impressed by people with a solid knowledge of the films they see or talk about. I love it when they make solid analysis or know the history of the director or of the studio. I also love those who can quote filme... All in all, people who take the most of what they can from the films they watch...

But that's a scale, I know a guy who will only watch IMDB top 250 films and knows everything about them, a practice which I find mind-numbing and anti-intellectual. I feel the best option is just to watch the films! Context only goes so far. The most important thing in my opinion is the work itself not the circumstances that created it.

I really don't know how you guys can do it! :blink:

I reached 1000+ films by combining two years in a row (526 in 2014 / 511 in 2015) and that gave me a complete burnout.

Since then I've been watching less and less, to focus on life and other things has others have put it. My lowest was last year with 249 and without making any goals this year I really want to beat it by watching less.

I usually watch one movie per day, after work, except during film festivals or when going into cinemas (then I watch from 1 to 4 films in a row, depending on what's available).
It's not that crazy, really...

I can manage a movie per day (we're talking about features right?). As of right now, I've seen 22 movies in 26 days. That's almost one per day.

But more than once per day, I just can't take it anymore. Even TV-Series, depending on the runtime /# of episodes, I rarely binge all the episodes.

I don't think it's crazy, but I think it's all about motivation, i guess..

Yeah I haven't been listening much to music this month. They are new releases from bands I really like, such as Portal and Harakiri for the Sky, but I wasn't motivated for some reasons.

Made some progress, though a bit of it was backwards with the new lists...

Reasonable Goals
- Improve my ICM rank to 1500 (Jan 1: 1972) - Now at 1856
- Make progress (i.e., at least 1 official check) on all official lists (that I haven't already platinumed) - Progress on 92 lists so far.
- Get my rank for all lists under 5000 (53 lists to go) - Now 46 lists to go.
- Get 64 awards (currently at 52) - Now at 56
- Get a bronze on at least one of those ~1000 film top lists - Not Yet
- Get at least 5 watches in all 36 official challenges this year - Accomplished for Jan.

Stretch Goals (may not be attainable, but worth a shot)
- Improve my ICM rank to 1200 (currently 1972) - Now at 1856
- Get 3 new checks on all official lists (that I haven't already platinumed) - 3+ Checks on 44 lists so far.
- Get my rank for all lists under 2500 (142 lists to go) - Now 140 lists to go.
- Get 75 awards (currently at 52) - Now at 56
- Get a bronze on at least two of those ~1000 film top lists - Not Yet
- Get at least 10 watches in all 36 official challenges this year - Accomplished for Jan.

Unreasonable Goals (a boy can dream, right?)
- Improve my ICM rank to 1000 (currently 1972) - Now at 1856
- Get 5 new checks on all official lists (that I haven't already platinumed) - 5+ Checks on 22 lists so far.
- Get my rank for all lists under 1000 (172 lists to go) - Now 173 lists to go.
- Get 90 awards (currently at 52) - Now at 56
- Get a bronze on at least three of those ~1000 film top lists - Not Yet
- Get at least 20 watches in all 36 official challenges this year - Accomplished for Jan.

Time for an update !! :)

1 - Still 2 to watch...

2 - 189 more films to watch

3 - That didn't change. Still 2 more films to check. I just found one of them !

4 - I mostly need to catch up with the rythm I wanted to follow... 99 before bronze.

5 - I got it, but that's because of the update. I count 7 more films to watch.

I didn't really work on my goals, but I think some of them are really within reach, now. Soon !

And here we go with the first update of the year: Decent progress overall, with a few lists taken care of, and my TSPDT requirement reduces with this year's update. Here's a breakdown of my progress, showing the number of checks needed at the beginning of the year, last month and today, with completed lists in bold, backslides in red and gains in green:
The push for Top 250 on every official listShow
1910s: 3-->3-->4
1950s: 1-->1-->2
1960s: 1-->1-->1
1990s: 0-->0-->0
A.V. Club Best Films of the 00's: 1-->1-->1
Amanda Award - Best Film: 1-->1-->1
Animation: 0-->0-->0
BBC's 100 Greatest Films of the 21st Century: 1-->1-->1
Belgian Film Awards: 1-->1-->1
Best of Rotten Tomatoes: 0-->0-->1
Cahiers du cinéma 100: 2-->2-->2
Cannes Film Festival - Palme d'Or: 1-->1-->0
ekolay.net's Best Turkish Films: 2-->2-->2
Golden Horse's 100 Greatest Chinese-Language Films: 0-->0-->0
Goya Award: 1-->1-->1
Guldbagge Award: 1-->1-->1
iCheckMoves - Most Favorite: 0-->0-->0
Livejournal Russian Top 100: 5-->5-->5
MovieSense 101: 1-->1-->1
Paste's The 100 Best Anime Movies of All Time: 3-->3-->3
Reddit Top 250: 1-->1-->2
Russian Guild of Film Critics - Best Russian Films: 1-->1-->0
Sight and Sound 2012 - Combined List: 15-->15-->14
The 100 Best Films of World Cinema: 2-->2-->2
The 100 Most Significant German Films: 1-->1-->0
They Shoot Pictures, Don't They?: 21-->21-->14
TimeOut's 100 Best French Films: 2-->2-->2
Top 100 Bollywood Films: 3-->3-->3
Top 100 Spiritually Significant Films: 1-->1-->1
And the breakdown so far:

Goal: Top 250 on every official list
Films left at start of year: 74
Target pace to meet goal: 6.17 checks/month
Checks left last month: 74
Checks left currently: 67
Checks left at this point in 2017/2016/2015: 92/84/64
Current pace: 7.0 checks/month
Top 300 goals completed this month: 1990s, Animation, Cannes Film Festival - Palme d'Or, Golden Horse's 100 Greatest Chinese-Language Films, iCheckMoves - Most Favorite, Russian Guild of Film Critics - Best Russian Films, The 100 Most Significant German Films
Lists that have (re)appeared this month: 1990s, Animation, Best of Rotten Tomatoes, Golden Horse's 100 Greatest Chinese-Language Films, iCheckMoves - Most Favorite
Worst ranking this month: 1950s (#318)
Best goal-related rank: Animation (#207)

I took care of a few lists that just managed to creep over the 250-mark in January (ICM Favourites, Golden Horse), but there are more on the horizon (Dutch Film, Russian Guild, etc.) so there'll be more of the same in February, no doubt. My biggest windfall was the TSPDT update, which reduced my goal-related checks by 4, making up more than half my net progress for the month. On track to finish in early November so far - we'll see if that lasts...

I have an odd plan this year, of finishing off the films on both TSPDT and Sight and Sound, two birds, one stone sort of thing, I'd be left with ~120 on TSPDT and ~60 on S&S. anyway I was doing some sorting and I found some peculiar numbers lining up regarding how many films left in this cross-referenced list by decade:
10s:4
20s:8
30s:14
40s:14
50s:36
60s:46
70s:46
80s:27
90s:27
00s:16
10s:1

all those doubles just seemed very peculiar to me. I know it's a very specific thing but.

No real concrete goals other than bronze on <400. Other than that I'll be trying to focus on Polish and Iranian cinema and working my way through my filmstruck watchlist.

Same here, pretty much. I can watch 1-2 in a day (sometimes 3 if I'm really in a film watching mood), but there are lots of days I don't have time to watch anything. Sometimes a whole week will go by and I won't have seen a film.

Last year I probably watched 175-200 movies total. It's absolute insanity to me how some people watch 1,000+. I mean, not really, but I can't imagine ever making that work for myself.

- take place in at least 6 challenges
- knock 10% off my watch list, which means I'd be finished with it, with no new additions, by about the time I retire :P

One of my goals for this year is a bronze on at least one of those 1000+ film critics lists. For the first time today, I noticed that I'm less than 100 films away from accomplishing it. I'm 98 films away from bronze on the "1001 Movies You Must See Before You Die" list. So this is entering the "actually possible to accomplish" realm. Yay!

For context, I'm still 400 away from bronze on Rosenbaum. But I'm having fun and finding a lot of great discoveries now that I'm actually getting into film.

I am calling this one done. I still technically have 83 to go, but they are not available with english subs (or available at all).

It seems I've lost interest somewhat in the S&S list for the time being. It'd always been an easy one to combine with the TSPDT but that's obviously ending now. I'm currently more interested in the #lists goal because it features some far more glaring gaps in my viewing than most of the relative obscurities that are left on the S&S.

I have also been doing some catch-up on last year's acclaimed films. I've been trying to find a decent way of keeping track of it, but it's mostly just a bunch of separate lists. I might as well record them here too.

2017

TSPDT: 8 left
S&S: 18/25
Film Comment: 15/20
Reverse Shot: 7/10
Cahiers: 4/10

Finally, along with the #toplists goal, these two are slowly coming into view:
Oscars: 73/90
BAFTA: 56/72

1 - Finish the AFI lists (3 more films to watch)

2 - Reach gold on the They shoot zombies, don't they ? list (192 films to watch)

3 - reach #1 in the french lists : 2 movies to check

4 - get bronze on the <400 list : 105 movies to check.

5 - get a gold medal on They shoot pictures, don't they ? 8 more checks...
1. Still 2 films to watch. Shame on me for getting distracted...

2. 188 more checks, so there's progress here, even if not enough.

3. I got the plat on the timeout list, so I only need to watch 1 film (except if the Cesar gets attributed to a film I haven't seen this week-end)

4. 98 films before bronze, I've kind of let down that goal for the moment. I'll get back to it soon.

5. Gold was reached with the new list, but I consider I still have 6 more films to watch, as it was my initial goal. I'll get there soon.

- Get my rank for all lists under 5000 (53 lists to go) - Now 34 lists to go.
- Get 64 awards (currently at 52) - Now at 58
- Get a bronze on at least one of those ~1000 film top lists - Not Yet
- Get at least 5 watches in all 36 official challenges this year - Accomplished for Jan/Feb

Stretch Goals (may not be attainable, but worth a shot)
- Improve my ICM rank to 1200 (currently 1972) - Now at 1648
- Get 3 new checks on all official lists (that I haven't already platinumed) - 3+ Checks on 68 lists so far.
- Get my rank for all lists under 2500 (142 lists to go) - Now 126 lists to go.
- Get 75 awards (currently at 52) - Now at 58
- Get a bronze on at least two of those ~1000 film top lists - Not Yet
- Get at least 10 watches in all 36 official challenges this year - 5/6 so far

Unreasonable Goals (a boy can dream, right?)
- Improve my ICM rank to 1000 (currently 1972) - Now at 1648
- Get 5 new checks on all official lists (that I haven't already platinumed) - 5+ Checks on 43 lists so far.
- Get my rank for all lists under 1000 (172 lists to go) - Now 172 lists to go.
- Get 90 awards (currently at 52) - Now at 58

...maybe also trying to finish Monte Hellman's filmography, which may be a challenge due to Cordillera.
