I once enjoyed Hol volt, hol nem volt (1987), which was called A Hungarian Fairy Tale on the VHS tape I watched it on. Not sure if it can be found anywhere today.

Also, Ruben Brandt, Collector.

Disney is just getting even more ridiculous now. People always say that capitalism brings innovation while socialism stagnates it, but looks what's happening. I already mentioned before how they are becoming a monopoly and are not taking any risks, but I didn't think it was that bad. There actually is literally NO RISK being taken at all.

a random question for dutch people. was watching an italian serial from 1910s which apparently only survived in a dutch translation. wondered why title cards all feature the word PIG

what does it mean

It's true there is wortwhile stuff on Netflix beyond what's on official lists, especially contemporary stuff. But most of those aren't on Dutch Netflix, unfortunate.
Yes, I use a vpn in China to log into my netflix account, and have tried servers in different countries where different stuff is available, though the netflix produced material seems to be available across the board, and many of the films I listed for Maxwell and Joachimt are netflix produced.
When I turn on VPN, Netflix doesn't work for me at all, because it notices I am using VPN. There might be ways to bypass this (although what I've read, they've been doing a good job making this harder and harder), but I don't want to get into stuff like that.
What VPN service have you been subscribed? I read in a review that these VPN services works well 100% with Netflix:
NordVPN
ExpressVPN
Surfshark
LiquidVPN
PrivateVPN
StrongVPN
VPN.ht

They have also list that doesn't work (all servers are blocked)

I'm using Private Internet Access. But I don't use VPN to cheat on streaming sites. It's just annoying I have to turn it off when I want to use Netflix on my laptop. But it's not a big deal, because I mostly use Netflix on iPad or iPhone.

No, I don't. I use the Netflix-app and then I cast to the Chromecast connected to my TV.

I thought I was up on most of the major horror films being released, but there seems to be a new version of The Island of Dr Moreau coming out and it looks terrifying:

Tom Hooper might just have outdone the dreadfulness of his Les Miserables, which is no small achievement.

wtf. why is it 100% CG? and the nightmare deepfake faces? why are the tails coming out of their assholes? and I know she's, like, everyone's darling, or whatever, but why hasn't anyone ever told Jennifer Hudson she's off-key?

even the furries are disgusted by all this.

I came to post the same trailer and what do you know, someone beat me to it. It's a Lovecraftian nightmare.

This re-scoring of the trailer is also effective.

it's really too bad. 30 years ago, the people responsible for something like this would have had their careers ruined and we'd never had to suffer thru something like this again. now it's just a tax right-off for the studio. heck, with enough wall-to-wall advertising, it might actually make some money.

Smoothly meshing CG characters with live-action ones seems to be the new trend... and it's extremely memetic. Earlier this year the design for Sonic in the trailer for the live-action film drew so much attention I've begun wondering if they deliberately misshaped him exclusively for the controversy. Perhaps the studios are purposefully giving the audiences the illusion of superiority ("I can fix this ridiculous design in 5 seconds myself!") or the ability to engage with the material ironically ("Wow, that looks so shitty and everyone's talking about it, guess I must go and see it for myself just to laugh at how bad it is!"). Perhaps it's more-so my generation (and the more social media / memes attached subset) which generally reacts this way (I doubt many around my age or younger gives a shit about 'Cats' the musical anyway), because I do think there's actually an honest audience assortment for these sorts of new movies.

I already thought 'The Lion King' was an indefensible abomination, but 'Cats' just might be up there too now.

Tbf I thought 'Toy Story 4' (semi-photorealistic CGI) and 'Pokémon Detective Pikachu' (live-action with pure VFX characters) both looked amazing. But those movies actually have character.

Who knew that when TS Eliot wrote The Waste Land, he was not referring to the destruction of WWI but rather the cultural devastation that would be wrought by a movie musical he "inspired" more than 50 years after his death.

I have no idea what I just watched. If it wasn't a musical, I might be intrigued just for the camp possibilities. I never saw the actual play, but I remember it running on Broadway for what seemed like 30 years. Based on that alone, I can see this movie coming in with a nice $500 million worldwide box office.

It looks beyond bizarre, indeed.

Happy to see all these CGI blunders (The Lion King, Cats), they still can't surpass Jurassic Park.
