December Criterions:
#225: Tunes of Glory (1960) upgrade
#1006: The Story of Temple Drake (1933)
#1007: Until the End of the World (1991)
#1008: Old Joy (2006)
The Wenders is pretty groovy. I think it was discussed a couple months ago on these forums. I like that the cover of the film, which has a significant portion of it set in Australia, is designed just like one of those generic Australian synth-pop bands' album covers from the early part of this decade.

Great to see Until the End of the World getting a proper release.
I have not seen Temple Drake or Old Joy yet, although I like Miriam Hopkins in all the stuff I've seen her in so far.

While KL might not put the most effort into their releases, they definitely get 'em out. even when they don't actually have the rights!
but yeah it's been, what, a five year, ultimately a six year delay?

Teorema (1968, Pasolini)
Paris Is Burning (1990, Jennie Livingston)
Antonio Gaudi (1984, Teshigahara) - upgrade
Roma (2018, Cuaron) - the first Netflix-distributed film released by Criterion, I would think?
Three Fantastic Journeys (Karel Zeman box set). Includes:
Journey to the Beginning of Time (1955), The Deadly Invention aka Invention for Destruction (1958), and The Fabulous Baron Munchausen (1962)

Very happy about Antonio Gaudi, might pull the trigger on that; vague memories of really liking the Pasolini but not enough to buy it immediately. I wish I loved Zeman more than I do but the only one that really knocks me out is Munchausen and I dunno if I'll buy the set for that.
But Roma is interesting - I really liked it, and could see myself getting it, though probably not right away, but more importantly this shows the possibility of future streaming films getting the deluxe treatment, hopefully soon including The Other Side of the Wind.

Ooh, good call on The Other Side of the Wind! With the news about Roma, if there's any other current Netflix film that is a good candidate to get a Criterion release it would be the Welles film, yeah.OldAle1 wrote: ↑November 15th, 2019, 7:40 pm But Roma is interesting - I really liked it, and could see myself getting it, though probably not right away, but more importantly this shows the possibility of future streaming films getting the deluxe treatment, hopefully soon including The Other Side of the Wind.

I saw it in the cinema with editor Bob Murawski present in the spring, and he said at the time that there were concrete plans for a BD release with lots of extras, but who knows how much say he has in the matter. Given the way NF is treating The Irishman I'd have to say that appearances are still that they would prefer everything streaming-only, and theatrical and/or physical releases are just a nuisance to them that they tolerate only because there are still stupid assholes out there who don't want to watch films on their phones.
At least one person involved with the Welles film has confirmed it'll be getting a Blu-ray release - it seems likely it'll be Criterion.
Netflix' Coen Bros. and Baumbach films also seem like pretty good candidates. (Assuming this is more than just a one-off deal.)

Yeah, after some digging I found this posting from August by one of the producers on Other Side of the Wind, Filip Rymsza, that hints at “something special” for a Blu-ray release: https://www.indiegogo.com/projects/fin ... pdates/all

Munchhausen has a UK standalone blu-ray release from Second Run, supposedly region free (haven't checked).OldAle1 wrote: ↑November 15th, 2019, 7:40 pm Very happy about Antonio Gaudi, might pull the trigger on that; vague memories of really liking the Pasolini but not enough to buy it immediately. It's Peter Becker's admitted favorite film.
Leave Her to Heaven with no special features is some Disney bullshit.

Good to know both of those factoids. Only thing I'll likely pick up soon from this bunch is Cranes Are Flying. I wish I were organized enough to figure out what FOX titles I should buy soon because they won't be available anymore - or won't be available in as nice editions under the mouse's reign.funkybusiness wrote: ↑December 16th, 2019, 11:59 pm It's Peter Becker's admitted favorite film.

Ahh...it all makes sense now. Did some Googling and didn’t realize the film was released by Criterion in the Laserdisc days, and found this interesting old article with Becker talking about the issues that Streisand had about the release: https://www.latimes.com/archives/la-xpm ... story.html

yeah at the very least I find it interesting that they're including the laserdisc commentary but... updated?
there was an archive, somewhere on the nets, that had all the laserdisc commentaries as mp3s but I don't remember what or where or

Heh, just noticed that one of the new special features on the Salesman disc is the Documentary Now parody with Bill Hader and Fred Armisen...nice.

More encouraging news regarding certain Netflix films getting physical releases, notably a developing relationship with Criterion after they announced a Roma release last year. Four more Netflix films getting Criterion releases: https://www.blu-ray.com/news/?id=26314

four more that Netflix announced, conspicuously all films up for the current nomination cycle. I wouldn't be surprised if older titles of similar prestige like Buster Scruggs and Okja are released as well. Basically, this is the new IFC deal.

I wouldn’t care at all about Okja, but I’d be down for Buster Scruggs. Oh, and The Other Side of the Wind is being worked on, so that’s coming as well. Criterion and Baumbach have a relationship, maybe The Meyerovitz Stories gets released down the road.funkybusiness wrote: ↑January 27th, 2020, 11:58 pm four more that Netflix announced, conspicuously all films up for the current nomination cycle. Would love to get that Phase IV, but I don't know what my shipping address will be when it's released. I could send it to a remailer but that would easily more than double the cost.

Criterion announce Come and See for June. Plus Keaton's Cameraman.
Also Portrait of a Lady on Fire, An Unmarried Woman and single release ofTokyo Olympiad (theoretically well timed)
Also Portrait of a Lady on Fire, An Unmarried Woman and single release ofTokyo Olympiad (theoretically well timed)
Come and See and Portrait of a Lady on Fire are immediate buys for me, or would be if I could spend money on anything right now.
I watched Portrait of a Lady on Fire last night. Not my thing. Dull. One of those repressed, Victorian-like films where every actor strains to avoid emotions and facial expressions.
