How big is your backlog?

I just deleted 10 movies from my backlog, because I couldn't think of a reason why I should watch them. They were just a bunch of movies that randomly got into my backlog years ago. I even kept some other random stuff like movies that got in my backlog, because I filled some random KG-requests. Not a particular desire to see them, but I am just curious to see what I uploaded myself.

Interesting thread. I guessed I'm in the 401-500 range

3 years ago I began stockpiling movies on my laptop because I was going away for the summer and I assumed I would have a shitty internet connection and lots of free time, so it was perfect for watching movies. I was right about the former but wrong about the latter. I have 180 films left to watch from that downloading spree, though a few are ones I saw years ago and want to see again.

Since I returned home a year ago, I've been going to my local library and ripping dvds, mainly in anticipation of leaving again (which is 99% going to happen next month), and only since I joined here in June have I really been watching movies more regularly. There are 200 films in that category on my computer (with 10 more being added this week). Add to that 7 films from my brother, 30 films from the lovely people here on the forum, and 30 films from KG (so far). I'm not counting my Watch later and other lists I have on my youtube account, which add up to just under 150 films (mostly shorts).

Grand total: 440 + 10, so I was actually right on. I thought I would be underguessing, but I've been watching (and then deleting) a lot of films these past two months, so I guess that's why. I'm running out of room on my external harddrive anyway, so it's probably good that I move in a month. I've got a separate spreadsheet for my movies at home/films I want to see that I update with information pertinent to the challenges here so that I can more effectively decide what to watch, which is very helpful.

I joined the ongoing unofficial cleanup challenge in hopes of making some inroads on my KG backlog. Trouble is, what do I do with the ones I've watched? I store some of them on flash drives in case I or anyone else wants to see them again later, but organizing is a pain.

I only buy movies if a) they're old "comfort-food" favorites that I like to watch over and over; or b) if I really want to see something and can't get it any other way. I rarely buy new DVDs sight unseen, though.

I could certainly do a lot of weeding of various queues. My ICM "Watchlist" tends to be a catchall for things that I have no other way of queueing, such as new movies that haven't shown up in the NF saved category, or stuff I can't find on NF or KG. I'm sure I could make better use of it, but it would be time-consuming to figure out how.

I just managed to get my backlog below 200.

Total runtime still 21.4 days. Average runtime of 154 minutes, because of the Hitchcock seasons and Heimat 2.

Well, these 99 titles still add up to a total runtime of 11.4 days (I counted a few seasons of AH presents and AH hour as 1 entry for each season). If I watch an average of 3 hours a day, it would take me 3 months. But I'm also rewatching my favorites and there are still new movies getting into my backlog for the World Cup and FotW, so I guess I'm booked for the rest of this year. I won't start picking new goals and collecting other movies before December.

Oh at least 1000 are dvds and blu-rays (and even some VHS, though I no longer have a working player). I've been meaning to make a count but I'm too lazy. 5 tb worth of stuff on hard drives.

The only backlog of films I have is the one made up of titles I have recorded on my TV planner. Somewhere in the region of 80 to 100 films I'd imagine and it is a constant struggle to make enough space for new stuff.

I hardly ever download stuff to my laptop so I don't have a backlog of titles building up there. I like to watch as I go and fall into new stuff serendipitously.

Even if you get them cheap that's still at least 5000 euros you spend without watching them any time soon. I regularly buy dvd's as well, but not more than I'm able to watch within a reasonable period. I can think of more useful ways to spend 5000 euros.

Out of the 6100 dvd/Blurays I own, I still have 1892 dvds to watch... And I do watch a lot of them (admittedly I even enjoy a few rewatches, and go to the movies quite often).

I'm well aware this is more than I can watch in a year, but I love to spend hours just looking at my shelves...

Given that my movie collection is at around 8000 at the moment and that I have less than 6000 checks on iCM and I do not own every film that I have ever seen, at a conservative estimate, I would say that I have:

Somewhere between 2750 and 3000 films unwatched films in my home movie collection on DVD, BRD, HDDVD, LD, VHS or Beta.

I know that sounds like a lot, but where I live, it is nigh on impossible to rent movies any longer (all but a few rental outlets have gone extinct) so if there even the faintest chance that I might want to watch or rewatch a film, it is worth my while to buy it at the right price. And luckily, between all the op shops on my side of the country and a local retail chain that specialises in reselling used products (Cash Converters), the vast majority of DVDs that I have bought over the past few years have cost me between AU $0.50 and $3.00 (quite cheap). The collector in me doesn't like the fact that some of the second hand DVDs that I purchase come scratched, but the vast majority of films that I buy second hand play without a hitch (higher than 95%).

It's not necessarily 1000 individual dvds/blus though; I have an awful lot of boxed sets (at least 50, perhaps 100) with anywhere from 4-50 films - features that is; also lots of sets of shorts. Still the number of physical dvd/blu is pretty large.

As to price - well, I'm guessing my average is below 5 euros which is what, 7 dollars, 8 at the moment? I've gotten a lot of stuff at thrift shops and I rarely buy anything that's not on sale, and those box sets bring the per-film cost down considerably. But I've also been collecting since VHS days in 1987 or so, so even if it is $7-8000 over 30 years that's only an average of $250 or so per year. And I spend more on that in the cinema, at least I have the last couple of years.

It's easy to guess from my situation, but I'm exactly the opposite : I become nervous when I don't have a huge number of films I can watch whenever I feel like it...

So My backlog gives me peace of mind. I know I'll be enjoying a good film tomorrow evening, or even next week. Knowing this is a pleasant feeling.

It's pretty useless to count my Netflix-backlog. Last week I watchlisted 6 movies. A few days later 3 of those were taken down from Netflix. If I want to watch something from Netflix, it seems I need to watch is right away......

You assume correctly. I have been known to watch the occasional film on YouTube, but generally it's all DVD and Blu-ray for me, with sporadic viewings on other formats.
