Let's Kick this off by highlighting the top women directors. None made it into the Top 100, which is a shame considering there were two in there last year. So let's give them a little time to shine.

Only 4 even made it into the Top 200.

At Number 4 we have:

Chantal Akerman Rank: 192 Points: 18
Imdb Page
ICM Page
TSPDT Rank: 111
Key film: Jeanne Dielman, 23 Quai du Commerce, 1080 Bruxelles

And At Number 3:

Sofia Coppola Rank: 172 Points: 21
Imdb Page
ICM Page
TSPDT Rank: N/A
Key film: Lost in Translation

Agnes Varda is better than both of them :P

edit: but maybe she's still to come 'cause I didn't notice the #4 and #3

I don't have strong feelings about her either way, I've only seen Beau Travail which was fine, but not enough to make me seek out more, though I have several on my watchlist. Varda's the real disappointment for me.

Varda is sort of a shock; I thought she'd climb the ranks this year lol.

35 rhums is worth checking out from Denis. I don't remember your feelings on Ozu, but it's very Ozuish if you like that sort of thing.

Yeah, thought Varda would go up, certainly not drop off the list. I can tell you that's not the only change that surprised me on the list.

I'll give 35 rhums a shot. I was close to watching it once but then other stuff came up and it got pushed aside.

I considered voting for Edward Yang but I didn't vote for him because I think his only great film is A Brighter Summer Day.

Tati wasn't even a runner up last year so this is an improvement for him. I don't like him, though, so I wish he were further down.

Alone with 42 points we have:

I really need to watch more from female directors.
Seen Beau Travail and Trouble Every Day by Denis -both of which I really liked, Virgin Suicides and Lost in Translation by Sofia Coppola, none from Varda nor Akerman. Although, I really do like Maya Deren. Hmm, maybe should've nominated her..

Has there been a female director challenge? That might be a good idea sometime in the coming year.

Could it be in March? I always watch films directed by women in March. Then maybe we could do iCM Board's Top Female Directors.

If anyone needs help, here's a jumping off point:

There was a challenge in March 2012: viewtopic.php?t=515&1/

There's also an iCM list of every official check directed by a woman: http://www.icheckmovies.com/lists/every ... r/beeswax/

Omg I knew that I was going to forget at least one person, and so far it's 2: Chantal Akerman and Maya Deren

Edit: I guess this means that Byambasuren Davaa didn't make it either :(

My father didn’t have the skill of a professional cameraman. The result? Avant-garde cinema.

So after the challenge, there is now less support for women. :mw_confused:

I wish I had more female directors to include, but I consistently don't like them :( I don't really like a whole lot of any-gendered directors though either :P

Nope, no women made it. Campion only got two votes and 5 points.

I voted for 1 female director, Ann Hui.

I would consider voting for Vera Chytilová, but first I need to watch more of her films (I only voted for directors where I've seen/liked at least 2 of their films).

Yi Yi is the greatest film ever made, A Brighter Summer Day my favourite film of the '90s and The Terroriser one of my favourite '80s films. Sad to see him not make it :(

I added a recommendation for a 8th option for a female director in the monthly director challenge thread. I feel particularly responsible, since I'd vote for Varda and Akerman but didn't find the time to make a list.

I would've voted for him, but I want to see more films from him first. I know he's hated around these parts, but I don't care :P
