I quit the forum for a few weeks, decided to lurk today, and had to log back in to say what a bad fucking take that is.

Yes, people get sick when taking it. Do you know why? Because a vaccine is a weaker version of the virus. It HAS to do that so that you develop antibodies. It's how your body can fight against it in the future.

You are literally saying you would rather get permanent lung damage (my partner works in a respiratory clinic and most patients are people who had covid months ago) rather than having a mild fever for a few days.

I'm just blown away. Seeing takes like this, or the one about how the covid test messes with an organ that regulates hormones (it's behind the skull) to the point that I'm having enough when seeing misinformation like this.

Completely agree and the worst thing is that so many people get misinformed because of social media.

You can compare it with a root canal, doing the root canal treatment hurts, your tooth hurts for 3 days after you did the treatment but it's still infinitely better than leaving it untouched to become an abscess.

Getting the vaccine might keep you in bed for a day but what's the hurt in that ? Covid can do permanent damage to your lungs and that frightens the shit out of me.

Ps: According to all these anti-vaxxers, the vaccine was literally death, you'd get unbearably ill and such. We're now what, 2 months ? into vaccinating and how many people have died from the vaccine ? How many have in the meantime died due to covid ?

I love when people create fresh new topics but get annoyed when it's clear that no attempt to search for existing topics of a similar nature seem to have taken place. But one poster's "related" is another's "tangent".

Apologies, didn't know... I wasn't planning on making a post about COVID actually. It just was there before I realized i made a post about covid (and also didn't know there was a general thread of covid), but just forget it. I will vaccinate myself, that's not the issue.

I got the first dose of the Moderna vaccine about a week ago. I felt slightly dizzy about an hour after the shot, developed a bit of a headache and later got achy joints, like one does shortly before coming down with the flu. Next morning al that was gone and I just had some residual fatigue and a seriously sore arm for 3 days total. That was it.

My wife had the same vaccine on Thursday and she has just been tired and with a bit of soreness in the arm.

I think everyone who can should take the vaccine, not just because it helps protect those who can't take it (the fabled "herd immunity") but also because even though you may make it through Covid-19 just fine the people you manage to infect before you realized you were sick may not be as lucky.

Oh, and my wife just had one of her students come down with it. She was in the hospital twice and twice went into (mild) shock. Her student's a freshman straight out of high school, so 19-20 years old.

You never know how it'll affect you and we still don't know what the long term effects of it may be.

2. Even if it was, it would be a great example of why I'd prefer people to keep politics out of the non-politics threads. Clearly it engages me in things that add (a little) stress to my daily routine rather than the stress relief I'm looking for when engaging in my hobbies.

Netflix suggestion function is so messed up. It shows the same the same movies on the homepage over and over again and from what Ive seen no option to go alphabetically or by year.

Try justwatch.com. You can get info on available streaming in your own country.

Although I use it, it's still a bunch of recommendations based on ...... whatever. Somewhat the same as what you see while browsing Netflix. Advantage is you can use it to mark movies as "seen" so they won't show up anymore, but it's still not useful if you want to fully browse the database. That's why I'm so happy with my iCM-list. I can browse everything, filter on checks, sort on number of official lists, crossreference on forum made lists or other lists I'm interested in, etc... This way I never miss something I might want to see.

Is this actually true for the mRNA vaccines (Biontech/Pfizer, Moderna, Curevac, etc.) though? As far as I understand they don't contain any virus but a string of messenger-RNA that tells your body to produce spike-proteins which it will then learn how to fight. The mRNA itself will just be digested afaik.

So for a decent portion of us the vaccine will not contain any virus, just information on how to fight it. In general this entire vaccine story is fascinating. An entirely new technology in development for like 20+ years is put on the market during a global pandemic which compared to most traditional vaccine manufacturing is a big leap forward and suddenly it's just widely accepted and people really hate on "that old stuff". But to be fair some of that is due to the unmitigated PR disaster that is Astrazeneca which is a story all to itself. It makes me wish Oxford had just stuck to their original plan to just release it for everyone instead of licensing it to Astrazeneca who seem to have no clue how to conduct this vaccine buisness (I mean as a company, the Oxford vaccine itself would be considered a miracle if we didn't have the mRNA ones and people are way too bitchy about it). In general it fascinates me how quickly people accept novel technology in this case. Even my mother is really unhappy about getting the AZ vaccine instead of Biontech. In Germany they did the funny thing to first not allow it for 65+ people, then allow it for everyone, then for noone and now not for people under 60 (so a complete 180° for a host of different reasons). It's like a little surreal comedy that writes itself. So unless I tell my doctor that I accept the presumably neglible risks of a thrombosis I'm bound to get the mRNA vaccine (but when?). But honestly if there is any way I can get an earlier shot than late fall I'm up for it. This isn't to say that their reasoning for pulling it is complete bullshit. The likelihood of someone in my age with good overall health and no preconditions dying of Covid is infinitely small. If the likelihood of the vaccine causing a deadly thrombosis are also infinitely small but oh shit 9 completely healthy people died out of nowhere, then this is suddenly a legitimate debate as the risk doesn't have to be gigantic to outweigh a Covid-infection or at least put it in perspective. but honestly sitting inside for a month longer in summer probably statistically has more negative impacts on my health than 2 dozens of these vaccines so this is a kinda hyppocritical debate at some level too. And I'd also like to just get it over with ASAP so I take anything that the government is willing to give me. But I'm not holding my breath in terms of stuff happening anytime soon. At least Schleswig-Holstein is one of the better governed states that has somewhat realized we just need to get that shit out into peoples arms instead of bunkering it in vaults for 2nd doses.

I really want a film about this entire vaccine story, there's so many interesting stories in all of this, maybe some avant-garde documentary mixed with surreal comedy or an absurd thriller. Vaccine-Mayhem 2 Electric Boogaloo, that shit writes itself!

Or maybe this is the time for some kind of Borat figure in Europe (should be from the Arab world of course). Society is so weird these days, do you even need scripts anymore? I'll write some of this down in my notebook under bullshit film-ideas. I have a dream of someday making a film out of all my worst film ideas.

Edit: Also the German conservative party is a real comedy club these days. The Bavarian Ministerpresident (the head of the Bavarian government and Merkel heir apparent) said that those who dare should take the AZ vaccine. Then the Minister of health encouraged people in the Cabinet to take it but our Minister of Interior (the security guy and the former Bavarian Ministerpresident) who always played the strongman apparently didn't dare and opted out of this (which is especially funny because his successor introduced this fucked up narrative). It would be more funny if this shit-show wasn't our government but at least they provide some laughs in hard times. Btw if you're under 50 and don't like conservative politics how about immigrating to Germany? We really need you. You have it right, these new mRNA vaccines work differently from the traditional vaccines that contain a weakened or "killed" version of the disease. There was an infamous incident where someone forgot to weaken the polio vaccine (formaldehyde, I think was what was used to weaken it) and a bunch of kids were injected with live full-strength polio. Obviously not ideal, but it was an accident and I know only of that one case where the "vaccine" actually caused the disease.

This new approach is really exciting to me, especially if we can expand that approach to other hard-to-fight diseases. I know one of the vaccine companies - I forget which, sorry - is working on a trial on children that is an extension of their trial of an ebola-vaccine being tested on children right now. The idea of using mRNA to "trick" the body into producing the characteristic surface proteins is clever and almost mimics how viruses use our cells' production system to reproduce. Beating the viruses at their own game, I like that idea.

I write this sick as a dog after my second dose (Moderna) yesterday. This one is really kicking my butt. But it's better than getting the real thing!

Haha, that's topical, "gute Besserung" (get well soon), as we say in Germany and I'm happy for you that you were able to get it now, my vaccine is still nowhere in sight. It's curious to hear that the reaction is still so strong but I guess even if you just trick the body it might go a bit crazy. Haha, that's topical, "gute Besserung" (get well soon), as we say in Germany and I'm happy for you that you were able to get it now, my vaccine is still nowhere in sight. It's curious to hear that the reaction is still so strong but I guess even if you just trick the body it might go a bit crazy. I agree that it's an exciting new development and I'm also curious to see where it will find it's uses.

The strong reaction comes from the immune system (which is usually what makes you feel bad when you get sick). The first time around the vaccine is still new to your body so the immune system reacts to it a little slow - it needs to "learn" to recognize the 'intruder' (in this case the spike protein encoded by the mRNA in the vaccine). When you get the second dose the immune system quickly responds to the spike protein and you get a stronger reaction.

Thank for the well wishes! I feel much better today, but I'm still a bit weak and have a headache that comes and goes. Hopefully I'll be fine tomorrow.

Thanks 3eyes. Migraine is gone, but the drilling through concrete continues... and the workers are strewn all over the hallway now, lol. It kind of makes it like a challenging obstacle course to navigate through... maybe adds a little spark to Monday morning.

So for my youtube channel hobby:

The camera breaks two months ago because my mother was careless with it (we split 50/50 for the cost since we both use it). It was under warranty, but they ran out of parts, and the camera model, so we just got a refund and I had to throw in more money with her to buy a more expensive model. I went to her house while she was at work to record everything for my next 2 videos. I then use my sd card to usb adapter to transfer stuff. It would keep stopping at random intervals, and then I get a message that says invalid ms-dos function. It then stops working completely. Disk Management doesn't even detect it, but when I removed it from the usb port the usb input got loose lol. I could go to her place today while she's working, but traveling for 45 minutes during a stay at home lockdown to be there for 2 minutes seems like a waste of time. I ordered another adapter and I will visit her this weekend anyways since I'm vaccinated, but if the sd card broke during the process then I think I'm gonna give up with youtube and video games, sell my recently acquired collection and go back to movies and tv shows.

EDIT: Thing is though is that one video was such a huge passion project of mine that I ordered a $600 made-to-measure outfit for it. It's on its way now. What the hell will I do with it if I don't have my youtube channel.
