Maybe it was already mentioned and I missed it, but which film would that be?
Pleasantville at #999
Aha, thanks! And it barely squeaked into the list, too, haha.

I think it was similar last year - just one. And probably the same person (or persons) commented on how it showed how boring the list was, or something to that effect.

Hmm, somehow I don’t have this is in my favorites list and it should be, especially to get a bit more representation for docs. Added to my list for next year’s poll.

Also, I’m gonna make it a point to have at least my top 50, ideally my top 100, ranked for next year’s poll. I’ve kept my favorites list unranked for too long now, heh.

I was curious how that looks compared to the most checked films on ICM itself and it really turns out 15/15 of the most checked films ARE part of our list. How close I was to saying that Pirates of the Caribbean, #16th most checked, would be the first outside of our list - but that isn't even true, in fact it ranks #844 at ours :o So I scrolled a bit further to find the most popular, not 1001-worthy movie and it takes a while. Even not widely (or non-controversially) adored movies like The Incredibles, Titanic, Gladiator, Ratatouille, V for Vendetta  - all on our list.
So it seems that #28 Shrek and finally #42 Home Alone are the most checked ICM films not to be featured in our favorites of all time.

You may argue that all of that says something about the nature of the most checked films at ICM, or more about our choices of favorites.

Torgo wrote: April 6th, 2021, 1:19 pm But where does one start with HHH?
For HHH, I would have thought A City of Sadness or The Puppetmaster would be both well-known enough and highly regarded enough to make it on here. Even The Assassin seems like it could have made the list given the hype around its (recent) release. I wonder where these three films placed?
Given how esteemed HHH is in many circles, including by some folks here and on TSPDT, I'd be very curious about the answer to this question. But I can tell you unequivocally where NOT to start: The Time to Live and the Time to Die. This was a dreadful theatrical experience a few years ago, on a fairly early date with my (now) wife, which I suggested - we both strongly disliked the film and found it intensely boring. I consider myself lucky this did not directly lead to the end of the relationship ... and that's not a joke or hyperbole. Fortunately she did like both Bande a part and Le Trou later the same summer, but I've been on a fairly short leash for non-English language film suggestions since then despite some notable successes like Parasite, The Vanishing and Cold War.

Despite this fiasco, I've watched two HHH films since then - Dust in the Wind and The Assassin - which were significantly better, but still didn't do much for me.
Funny you should say that, because that's actually my favorite of his!

But at the bottom, the immanent philosopher sees in the entire universe only the deepest longing for absolute annihilation, and it is as if he clearly hears the call that permeates all spheres of heaven: Redemption! I know that was said with a smiley and while it's not totally wrong, it's also true that our picks for favorites don't exist in a vacuum.
It's easy to prove for recent releases, since I'm positive that many forum users watched e.g. Portrait of a Lady on Fire, The Lighthouse or maybe Mommy or Winter Sleep before those hit a single list. For much older older releases, you could look how many of the average participants love an unofficial, pre-1980 (or any date) unofficial film more than any official ones .. and how often that appears for lists.
The interesting stand outs for me are titles I'd call either ICMcore or ICM forum mafia; those which do strong in the <400 poll or most-favorite but are otherwise overseen by history, audiences and critics (for whatever reasons, deservedly or not). Cases where the word-of-mouth advertising and cult patterns apply .. I like that.

ThAnks, Tim.looks like an even top 60, of which I voted for 26 among my 70 entries, though only 5 of the top 10. Lynch and PTA would probably be the next two directors I added if I enlarged my list, and a few others would probably also have films in my top 100.

Overrated for me (though I still enjoy them) are the more old fashioned filmmakers on the list whose craftsmanship I can admire without really being all that inspired.
