Voting Rules:
- You must watch all 3 films before you vote.
- To vote, rank the 3 films from most favorite to least favorite. (note: you're ranking the individual films, not the countries)

Voting deadline = Nov 4th
Countdown till deadline

The country that ends at 1st place proceeds to the next round. The ranking of the match will be decided using these rules:
- Ranked by lowest average ranking.
- In case of a tie between two movies, head-to-head determines the winner (how many people thought A>B and how many thought B>A).
- In case there's still a tie after the previous rule or there is a tie between all three movies, most #1-votes determines the winner.
- Still a tie? Fewest #3-votes determines the winner.
- Still a tie? The match will have a 3 day extension (except when the tie is only between #2 and #3).
Here's a quick summary of how the tournament works
We start with 48 films from 48 countries. Each country has a manager who determines which movie will be watched. In the first round the countries are divided into 12 groups of 4. From each group the countries that end up at #1 and #2 proceed to the next round. In the 2nd round the 24 remaining countries will be divided into 8 groups of 3. The managers pick a new movie. The winner of each group proceeds to the next round. The final 8 countries compete one-on-one in the quarter finals (with a new movie of course) and so on till the final.

I expect an easy victory for England here. It's the only one I've seen before and it is a favorite. The other have to be really good to get near.

I wouldn’t mind if China wins. I loved Mang jing and really liked this one as well. On my <400 list now (don’t tell Ebbywebby tehe )

England have played it safe for two rounds now. A forum darling and an official movie with a high check count. If England wins I do hope for a more funky choice next round (pun intended).

Mediocre screenplay, great cinematography and acting.

2. Please Vote for Me
More like a drama than a documentary. And to me it is an one-sided criticism on democratic election, and it is not objective at all. Also, I can't believe the parents teaching their children to badmouth their opponents for the sake of winning! What kind of education is it?

Very evenly matched round and hard to pick the ranking, but here's one:

1. Yvy Maraey

Very meta particularly towards the end, but also a very interesting exploration of representation on indigenous people. Good move to have the director himself play the white guy, makes the confrontations (particularly in the first half of the film) come across as genuine and experienced. An unique film that truly is a discovery for me, even though I have seen Southern District by the same director. That film has more of a direct political message, but also has a distractingly frequent use of 360 degree panorama throughout. In Yvy Maraey, this auteur fingerprint isn't so grating, partly because it is not used constantly. A good companion film to Tabu (2012) and Embrace of the Serpent (2015).

2. Please Vote for Me

A rather clever deconstruction of benefits and issues of (American style) democracy told through third graders and their parents. Has some questionable scenes from a documentary standpoint, which makes me feel it's quite manipulated. But good fun.

3. 10 Rillington Place

Great acting and engaging throughout in its moral dilemma, if sometimes a little slow plot-wise because as a viewer you are so far ahead of the characters. My main gripe with it though will probably sound a bit silly but it really did bother me in a major way throughout: I really struggle to suspend my disbelief of the world that is depicted, it doesn't feel real or lived in, which means that, for me, the story doesn't have that tension in its connection to reality that often other films "based on real events" have (I know! Bizarre!). The closest thing to a real world to me in this film is actually the courthouse. The interior of the other rooms look and feel like stages from a BBC play, and do not for me fit with the (empty) world outside on the street. I was really dissapointed when they went on a tour around the top apartment at the beginning of the film and it started feeling like a museum tour of the set of an adaptation of Bleak House. For the longest time, I didn't have a mental map of where the room with the medicine cabinet was in relation to the other places, it just felt like it was an island in the film by itself, hence I didn't feel like our lead was in any danger. The street outside was so empty, lifeless and quiet it reminded me of a older open world game like Mafia (2002) when you went into a back alley at the edge of the map that was far from any of the missions of the game and where NPCs and cars wouldn't spawn. I know this critique is a bit silly, but it was honestly these associations that lessened my enjoyment.

This one was hard to get through, not much to like on the whole. But the UK one was at least well made besides being dreary and the Chinese one had one ore two interesting talking points going for it...

I enjoyed all the film choices but Rillington Place felt a bit too by-the-numbers for me, and although I liked Attenborough's performance I kept thinking about how fantastic he was in Brighton Rock, whereas his performance in Rillington did not really have the same depth. Yvy Maraey was a good road movie, but I felt it got bogged down in a few places. On the other hand, I really loved the cinematography and thought it was an excellent way to end the film. Please Vote for Me was entertaining and interesting on so many levels that I am still thinking about it.

Please Vote for Me felt very constructed. And yes, I know that in some sense all documentaries are constructed. I'm saying it felt like the dialogue and interactions were planned out by the filmmakers. At best, I think it was a film crew trying to make their doc more dramatic, and at worst it was the Chinese government trying to make a movie about how democracy makes everyone miserable.

Sorry you (and zhangalan) felt that way. Please vote for me was commissioned by a New-Zealand NGO, I don't suspect any Chinese government propaganda befhind it. Rather, it shows pretty well the manipulation from the authorities, through the teachers (the morning hymn and march, the pre-selection of the candidates) and the parents towards the kids. Like recent examples in Western democracies, elections can be easily perverted by so-called populist politicians that only strive for their own interests: it doesnt contradict democracy as the best system around. Regarding the methodology, as you hint, as soon as you start shooting the subject, there is a risk you influence it and it is even more true with kids I guess. The director said he spent months with them so they could get accustomed to him and his camera before the election shooting took place over 2-3 weeks timeline. There is some dramatization from the editing but I found it was rather helping to stay engaged all along.
