Where are all the voters!!! We could use some Canadians here. Don't you guys have any national pride or spirit or whatever?
I'm still going with the vote that's helpful for Canada even though that's a lost cause, but still tring to be unhelpful to DomRep.
I enjoyed the East German entry the most, but then I had to account for it being Soviet propaganda whitewashing for an occupied country. Surprising that it's doing so well in spite of that.
I subtracted only half a point and reserve the right to drop it to 3rd if it'll help Austria.
Les bons debarras 7 - rewatched just now
Ich war neunzehn 7
Das finstere Tal 7
Jean Gentil 3.5 - how does anything trail this non-movie, that's depressing.

Sure, I need at least 2-3 voters who'd place Les Bons first which is too much to hope for.

I still have Jean Gentil left to watch, but so far I prefer Ich war neunzehn and Das finstere Tal over Les bons débarras, so no #1 vote from me.

The first round ends with another good match. Hard competition for my own entry.
1. Das finstere Tal: Gave it (another) rewatch, just to be fair to the competition, but I still iked it as much as the first time when I saw it in the cinema. I guess I just love snowy western. 8.5/10
2. Les bons débarras: Strong and a bit quirky drama with very interesting character dynamics 8/10
3. Jean Gentil: Fascinating stuff about a guy lost in the world after the Haitian earthquakes, aliented by the big cities and finally changing into a quasi-meditative state in the jungle. 7.5/10
4. Ich war neunzehn: Fine episodic tale about the war experiences of a German born Russian soldier. 7.5/10

1. I Was Nineteen - 7.8
2. Good RIddance - 7.4
3. The Dark Valley - 7.2
4. Jean Gentil - 6.4
Overall it was a mixed bag, but still a decent match. Minor spoilers below.
I saw Les bons débarras almost two years ago, but it's still fresh enough in my mind, and the gap between the other films too large, to warrant a rewatch. The high quality version that was recently shared might tick it up to 7.6 or even 7.8, but I think Germany would still win in this round for me.
Ich war neunzehn was good (I expected to like it), though I didn't consider the propagandistic aspects of the film being made. There were a few scenes that were too preachy for me, which is why it's only 7.8 and not higher, but over all I quite enjoyed it.
Jean Gentil was ad admirable attempt, but ultimately too slow and disinteresting to really grasp my attention. It may be intentionally nihilistic, but meh. I don't think this had anything to do with the earthquake, though, since it was released in the same year, but filming almost certainly took place before it, and the scene is entirely set in Santo Domingo at the start, not in Haiti. Unless I misunderstood part of the plot (which is possible; at one point I thought he was going home by bus, but instead he ended up in some random jungle?)
Das finstere Tal was pretty, but hollow. It was moody and was a good, unconventional, take on the western genre, but beyond the revenge plotline everything else felt thin.
Interesting how in this match the Germans brought in the Russians, the Dominicans the Haitians, the Austrians an American (who's really a Brit), leaving les Canadiens to fend for themselves.

To be honest Jean Gentil might be the better film, but I enjoyed Das finstere Tal very much and it really won me over, so I had to put it on top.
