Amazing work, Tim!
I also had no part in the HHH massacre - I've seen all of his features from 1993 onwards, and included at least several of his films. But I still haven't seen A City of Sadness
, or most of his '80s output. Overall it would be nice if more of his films were widely available in better quality. He still wouldn't be for everyone, but he'd probably have quite a few more fans here. If Tarr and Diaz can get on the list then surely Hou can as well.
For those considering dipping their toes in who haven't done so yet, here's a scene from The Assassin
, arguably one of the 5 or so most aesthetically beautiful color films ever made:
And Tim, no the reason Moulin Rouge!
isn't ranked higher isn't because you forgot it. It's because it's actual torture
and my personal least favorite film of all time for over 10 years now. Clearly everyone agreed to leave it off their lists for my sanity's sake.
The experience of watching it was like going through that freaky tunnel in Willy Wonka
...but for hours
(Anyway, I joke around, but it was a seriously distressing experience for me)
