Ohayô dropped from completely stable 500-ranks out of the 1000 and never returned.

Makes you wonder if Ozu has been cancelled or something. :P

Huh. I’m quite surprised that this particular Cronenberg film had been in the list every single year (until now), I wouldn’t have expected that level of love for it. It was just a “like” for me and not a favorite, though I saw it ages ago at too young an age I think to really “get” it most likely...in other words, very much due for a re-watch and I’d look forward to it.
LOL that this is not on the 366 Weird Movies ..
It hurts how they just stopped at that random count :mw_confused:
It's the number of days in a leap year. I'm pretty sure they were going for a "film-a-day" type of thing. Not random at all.

Ferg, I do realize the numerological appeal to the 366 (and might have came across this very number or its more old-fashioned sibling, the 365, in my life before), it just cuts off a list project which wasn't finished at all. The appendix of the list exists since they (he?) of course will keep finding very weird films and there's little need to cut it short - make it a 500, a 666, a 747, a 1001, just don't stop so soon when there's enough weirdness to be championed!

Kairo - one of the absolutely creepiest films for me. Should belong in any Top 5 of J-Horror, but it looks like people have more problems relating to its atmosphere than with Ringu or Ju-On. Pity.

Given the high half-life of this poll, I might consider adding my strong 7's to my list next year because some movies (like Le Corbeau) need more support overall

Only 8 in the top 100, 5 of which have lost ground compared to last year.

And everybody focuses on my second sentence (I don't know what a oui problem is, though, Kongs  ) but I'm astonished that Le Corbeau is outside our top 1000 while Le Salaire de la Peur is in our top 50, and the popularity of Le Corbeau and Le Salaire de la Peur in France are not that different

Just to end with my rant, I promise I'll move on after that, I use on a daily basis a website called SensCritique where for example Le Corbeau has been rated 6,300 times and let's say The Third Man (#23 in our poll) has been rated 4,200 times.
While on iCM they are respectively at 1,850 and 20,910 checks.
So I might have a distorted view on the popularity of French movies worldwide.

Okay, I see where you are coming from (figuratively speaking, and literally too). Interesting fact and something I can't judge, but as I said on another occasion, the German films to be celebrated in this forum are also mostly cinephile titles which wouldn't be seen by the common Kraut pleb. No one of my age randomly watches Fassbinder movies, for example.
For your Clouzot films, I can't tell anything about Corbeau's wider popularity and have no deep personal relationship with this title. It used to rank 500-700 here, that is not too bad, right. The plain numbers show a BIG advantage for Smokey and Le salaire de la peur though:

Le corbeau (1943)
- IMDb 7.9 at 9,100 votes
- ICM 1,850 checks with 190 favs
- 9 lists, neither of them 1001BYD or TSP

Le salaire de la peur (1953)
- IMDb 8.1 at 55,300 (!) votes, almost always in the Top 250, one of the 5 highest rated old French films
- ICM 7,405 checks with 1,211 favs
- 25 lists (an already enormous number and it ain't classic Hollywood), both 1001BYD and TSP #287 (and S&S), ICM most fav #51, multiple award list and best-ofs

So.
Maybe that helps to lessen your surprisement. If the raven will return to the middle of the list I can't tell.

Wow, top 50! I felt guilty not voting for a Wachowski film, but I haven't seen Cloud Atlas or The Matrix a very long time. Perhaps in next year's poll!

If you need any more reason to see Samsara other than that just one Baraka wasn't enough, look at this big-ass long list of countries. You won't find more in this poll. B)
A fantastic doc experience, filmed in magnificent 70mm; dare to imagine this on the big screen!
(Yes I said it, I think the profit is like 5000% higher than for HHH)
I loved Samsara, but not enough for it to crack my top 70. I liked Local Hero a lot, too, and it would certainly be in my personal top 1000
