I thought of saying something similar but then thought better of it - but now that you broke the ice... yeah, I especially had a flashback to circa 2006 IMDb forums and the love for American History X there among the cool teenaged-boy set. Not that that film doesn't get a certain amount of critical acclaim from people outside of the high school-college range, but I wouldn't have expected it to rank as high as it does here, that's for sure.

I've never fully understood the high praise for Fucking Åmål, but hey.
Expected great ranks for the likes of Blood Simple & Synedoche, New York. Even better than expected for Carnival of Souls, Primer, La planète sauvage & Man Bites Dog

That Koyaanisqatsi only landed really high on the lists of joachim, Gorro and mine surprises me. Perhaps a lack of participants from the docu screensaver mafia.

I swear that's true.
I think no movie in the top 100 is really bad (edit: OK, I admit I can't stand Gattaca) and I have even highly considered some of these when I first watched them (like American History X for example).

I'm just surprised in the sense that: show the list to anyone without the context, they'll think it has been made by some 20-year old boy, or more accurately some guy who was 20 years old in 2000 and is nostalgic about it, and that's a very different feeling than what I've experienced so far with our other lists

.. interesting, this is the 3rd highest film on our ICM most favorited (weighted) list and been like that forever, I think it used to be 1st even for a while? Still, in a poll aimed on debuts alone, it barely enters the Top 50.

Hehe you would have been right to use it as a counter. I agree with everything you said about "Un homme qui dort" but I can't help loving it: it's special to me because I dropped out of college and it showed exactly what I had been feeling at the time and the film was also kind of an excuse like "you see, I'm dropping out but there's a movie that explains everything about my decision and as I'm not the only one to feel this way then it's totally OK to do so".
But unlike other movies, it has also stood up the test of time because of the philosophical fodder you mentioned: Georges Perec remains one my favourite writers.
But yeah it has the typical "twenty-something" label all over it and it's finally only a 8/10 in my books, still enough to be in my all-time top 100
