Man this gets harder every year - and I probably say that every year. I'd like to, as sol has done, highlight the stuff I've seen from the last year, but that's impossible this time if I want to focus on what I think are the very best. It seems like almost everything great I saw within the last year is ineligible (1,2,8 are the exceptions); I guess my tastes remain more canonical than I'd like to admit. At least I did manage to avoid re-nominating any of my failures - I think these are all first picks for me. The field continues to winnow... Oh well, not something that's worth worrying about -

If I didn't limit myself to only unofficial films watched in the past 12 months, I would have way too much to choose from and narrow down. I'm a bit surprised that you didn't see more over the past year that meet such criteria, but then again, I'm probably watching more films than you on average... so maybe it's just inevitable that I would find more unofficial favourites than you over a twelve month period.

First, I choose only films I rated 10 - I'm guessing that's not a rule for you as you are much more stingy in ratings; I do occasionally pick a 9 but it probably averages less than one per DTC. Also for the last several years I've focused on Iran and female directors and have typically tried to have multiple films in each category - this year I managed only one Iranian film as most of my favorites that are eligible have been tried before and failed, and I didn't see anything new in the past year that was up to snuff. And yeah, in the past year in particular I did see less new stuff overall than in most years over the past decade, and I did more re-watching and watched more TV. And just in the past 2 weeks I've really upped my reading so next year's crop could well be even harder to harvest.

I like your rule and I think one year I tried specifically to do that though I don't know that I succeeded. A lot of my favorites (Raoul Ruiz standing out in particular) have managed to break into the pantheon in the last few years though with the 1000-2000 and 21st century expansions, so that'd be a further headache and would probably conflict too much with my other self-imposed rules

Looks at a glance like about half of my choices this year fit the bill though.

Happy to bring some intrigue, haahaa. The Yashin is a beauty and was one of the first films on my submission. I hope my nominating it might shine a bit more of a light on it. It getting the ''Eysymont treatment'' in due course would be nice, indeed. I've been rather startled (but pleasantly startled) at how many people on here have watched the 1944 film and have come back with a positive reaction.

Copy uploaded to KG, pot for transcription started (I hope to see doublers contributing). If Russian subtitles were available, I would convince my pal tequila to make a Spanish translation. With Russian and Spanish subs available I'm sure an English translation will soon come out. It is the same procedure followed for Once There Was a Girl, I hope it will have the same success.

Oh, thank you for uploading the film to KG. I don't know about the availability of Russian subs but I appreciate you giving the film a push and a nudge towards the light. I hope others with subbing skills might be interested enough to latch on to this one. Very kind and thoughtful of you to get the ball rolling, so to speak.
