Edited my post, which looks like the last vote - hopefully that resolves the issue.

Self-selection bias is my guess. The majority of people who saw Fox are people who really like Wes Anderson. That dynamic is in play for all movies, but I think it's very strong in this case.

Mulholland Drive is also more of a love it or hate it movie while Mr. Fox (and animation in general) ratings are more evenly distributed.

Both good comments I think. But I think Wes A is probably almost as love-it-or-hate-it as Lynch actually - remembering lots of comments from the past few years, there are plenty of folks who aren't fans. As for me, Lynch has four films that I'd rank above any of Anderson's though I do like all of Wes's films. FMF is one of my least-favorite though on the basis of one viewing when new - perhaps it'd improve, I dunno. I've never seen any of his films more than once and really never think about them after I see them, no matter how much I like them initially. Probably not a good sign.

It's fairly easy to see on ICM although it's less of a difference than I thought.

Love it or hate it movies have a high Fav% and a relatively low Fav/Dis while generally liked movies have a relatively low Fav% and a high Fav/Dis

Mulholland Drive
Fav% 12.4%
Fav/Dis 10

Fantastic Mr. Fox
Fav% 9.2%
Fav/Dis 15

As you can see Mulholland Drive wins the Fav% but loses the Fav/Dis. because it's more of a love it or hate it movie than Mr. Fox is.

Some extreme examples from the TSPDT list:

Jeanne Dielman, 23 Commerce Quay, 1080 Brussels
Fav% 16,4%
Fav/Dis 5,4

Satantango
Fav% 19,4%
Fav/Dis 6,7

As I Was Moving Ahead Occasionally I Saw Brief Glimpses of Beauty
Fav% 20,9%
Fav/Dis 7,1

On the other end of the spectrum we got generally liked movies:

Toy Story
Fav% 5,6%
Fav/Dis 28,5

The Great Escape
Fav% 6,5%
Fav/Dis 25,9

Ghostbusters
Fav% 4,8%
Fav/Dis 18,2

The first kind does better on top polls, the second kind does better when picking a movie to watch with your girlfriend :whistling: (and in this kind of knockout rounds)

Compelling research Coryn. I think you're right that in head to head matchups it's more important to be liked than loved. This gives the movie flexibility against a wider range of potential matchups.

Has anyone ever made a list of the top films that have the highest ratio of favorites to dislikes?

I did once but lost the excel, I made an analysis of how 21st century movies were on less official list while being more liked than older movies (won't go there now) and made some interesting conclusions there.

From what I remember one of the top movies with the highest fav/dis was Ernest et Célestine (2012)
It has 272 Favs and 2 dislikes but at the moment I did the analysis it had 140+ likes and 1 dislike.
Current ratio is thus 136:1.

In fact, let me do the analysis again :)
