iCM Forum's Favourite Under 50 iCM Checks Movies

:Crtiticker: Nominations topic :Crtiticker:

For a new year, let's try something... really new and create our "under 50 checks" list of best movies...

As it's a first, we're good for good surprises and a funny Result thread.

The deadline for submitting your list is going to be set @ Sunday 31 January 2021

- Movies must obviously be ... under 50 iCM checks.
- Movies can't be very recent release : don't add 2020/2021 Release ones.
- Shorts, Documentaries and mini-series* are allowed. TV shows are not allowed.
* Mini-series must be 14 episodes or less, not multiple seasons, and not planned to be longer but canceled. The series should be intended as a single unified work and not episodic.
- Films that reach 50 checks or more by the deadline will be removed (so you don't have to do it yourself).
- :imdb: IMDb-lists or :ICM: iCM-lists are accepted. (If you can't make one of those, ask another user to help you out.)
- Lists can be any length.
- Each nominee can only be named once (of course)
- Your list may be ranked, unranked, or partially-ranked. In a partially-ranked list, the top X films are ranked and everything after that point is unranked. When not specified I will consider a list as ranked.

Some help :
Need to ask PA for some help setting up the IMDB Filters ....

We'll talk scoring later as well... not sure yet how long the submitted lists can/will be.

had a few thousand options, got that down to a few hundred features that I rated high, and then sat down to select the very best of those (while leaving out the most recent, films below 5 checks and films coming up on 50 checks) and ranked them to come up with this final list of 175 excellent and WAY underseen movies!

some names with multiple features on my list:
4x Ryuichi Hiroki
3x Fred Kelemen
3x Cao Guimaraes
3x Angela Schanelec
3x Yefgeni Yufit

I think these are the most obscure movies I still decided to include in my list (they are currently in the 7 - 9 check range):

Onde Bate o Sol 1989
Sapekhuri 1985
Posto-Avançado do Progresso 2016
The Wolf Knife 2010
Das Glück meiner Schwester 1995
Rycerz 1980
Ex isto 2016
Mazâ wôtâ 2010
Cesta pustym lesem 1998
Le théâtre des matières 1977
L'ange et la femme 1977

Das Glück meiner Schwester is the debut of Schanelec which has very recently been added to MUBI, I hope some more people will seek that one out before the deadline here. Also an American independent in there, Wolf Knife, who would have thought that could happen?!

Just to make sure I understand correctly: episodic means series like Friends, The Office, Sherlock,.. while non episodic would for example be Band of Brothers ?

Filtered from my Top 650, so easy enough. 200 films in total (just a lucky coincidence - just over 30% of my favorites), meaning contemporary Asian cinema sure is a blind spot on ICM.
Also hope people aren't lowering their standards to include more films for this poll.

Mine are all 4/5s or higher, which is why there aren't that many of them. I also only included one short, because Kirsa Nicholina is my favorite film meeting the requirements of this poll and I can't see it receiving love from anyone else.

Here's my meager contribution, ranked: https://www.icheckmovies.com/lists/favo ... beasterne/

I only have 2 feature length films on the list. Everything else is a short or an episode from an anthology series (Documentary Now! (l) )

April Challenge: Image
But at the bottom, the immanent philosopher sees in the entire universe only the deepest longing for absolute annihilation, and it is as if he clearly hears the call that permeates all spheres of heaven: Redemption! Redemption! Death to our life! and the comforting answer: you will all find annihilation and be redeemed!

Are TV-episodes from anthology series, where the episodes are unrelated, allowed?

The 500<400 have this rule:
+Stand alone episodes of anthology type series are allowed if both the episode and series are under 400 checks.
I would normally assume it's the same for this list except with 400 checks being replaced by 50 checks in the rule, but I see no rule in the OP that addresses episodes of anthology series, which makes it seem like they're not allowed

Hmm, good point. I was assuming we would use the same eligibility criteria as the <400 poll, just with the number of checks changed obviously. For the record, Documentary Now the series is also under 50 checks (42 currently).

Coryn it's just the usual Copy/Paste i know it's not good enought.

Episodic would be different episode of the mini series talking about completely different stories.
Not sure there are a lot of mini-series that suit that ... but feel free to propose something and i'll take a look.

Fot the <500 poll, PA seems to have create custom made exclusion lists that he use to create custom request to the IMDB DB.

PA : Can you help creating the same type of request for an <50 filter ? If that's even possible of course.

I ahve tried to replicate the same kind of restriction than the 500<400 opening thread but check the 2018 thread ... i'll take a look at the last one and "improve" the OP if needeed.

I feel like I've seen you say this before... you really have something against those of us who actually like most of the films we see don't you?

Anyway I don't think it will be an issue here. If others' experiences are similar to mine there is going to be very, very little overlap, to the point where I'd imagine it will be difficult for there to be any meaningful results in the end. I've looked at every list so far posted and here's what I got:

1 list that I've seen 9 films from
1 list that I've seen 5 films from
2 lists that I've seen 0 films from

all the others I've seen 1-3 films from

And that's SEEN, not voted for. My overlap with all the lists posted so far is probably going to be under 10. Pretty clear to me that when it comes to these very low-check movies we are all seeing, or at least liking, quite different films, so even with some larger lists that might have "lowered standards" I can't imagine it will affect results much. And there aren't a huge number of official films that are under 50 checks, and certainly very few that are on multiple lists, so the official-check-whores aren't going to have much fun here and aren't going to be providing big lists - though I suppose inevitably what overlap there is will mostly be on official checks.

That is 100% the wrong conclusion.

I dislike the "oh, my list looks so puny, I'll add some 7s and 6s because they're not that bad either" situations.

Different people have different rating methods. If I rank things on a five point scale, then everything in my current 7-10 range would become 5/5.

Love the idea, wonder how it will turn out. Of all the lists thus far, I have seen three movies in total. Only one of those would I vote for in my list. Another example of me being blown away by the breadth of film viewing on here.

I’m intrigued. How does that work? Are 7 and 8 not just four stars? I can see arguments about where 7 and 9 land but would have thought 8 couldn’t be anything other than 4 stars.

I get that and it’s completely valid approach and can lead to deeper analysis and approaches to criticism.

However, in this case we’re taking about transposing one number based ranking scheme to another, hence my interest being piqued as to how it wasn’t just proportional.

A 3 is the middle number in 1, 2, 3, 4, 5. Anything above the middle would be a positive rating while anything below the middle would be a negative rating. Under the logic of everything above the middle point is a good rating, a 6 is a good rating in 1-10 scale while a 4 would be a good rating in a 1-5 scale. There is only one positive remaining rating in a 5 point scale under this reasoning. In a 10 point scale, there would be four remaining positive ratings with slight variations between the degrees of satisfaction. And I don't want to get off topic any further in this thread
