Year by Year Polls: 1944 (Nominations) [CLOSED]

Post by maxwelldeux »

Welcome to the Year-by-Year Poll!

Image

This poll is for the year 1944

These polls are fairly simple. We work our way through film history selecting a different year each time, and you list your top films from the given year. Depending on the number of voters, the poll usually produces a list of around 50-90 films and is a great way of finding recommendations. Lots of people will also list other films outside their top 20 as honorable mentions or runners-up.

The Rules

- You can vote for a minimum of 5 and a maximum of 20 films.

- Feature films, documentaries, short films, TV movies, and TV mini-series are all eligible, but not continuing TV series or individual TV episodes.

- We use IMDb dates for consistency, so a title should be listed on IMDb as 1944.

- Your ballot can be ranked, unranked, or partially ranked, but I will assume it's ranked unless otherwise stated. For ranked ballots it makes it easier if you use a numbered list.

- IMPORTANT: Along with a list of the titles from 1944, please include the corresponding list of bare IMDb urls for the same films. Your ballot will be deemed disqualified if the IMDb urls are not included.

The Scoring

For ranked ballots, the top-ranked title will receive a number of points equal to the number of titles on the ballot, with each succeeding title receiving one fewer point. So the top title on a list of 20 films will receive 20 points, the next 19 points and so on. If the list has only 10 films, the top title will receive 10 points, the next one 9, and so on. If there are 5 films on the list, the top film will receive 5 points, the next one 4, well you get the idea.

For unranked ballots, each title will receive an equal share of the total points that would have been allotted to the ballot if it had been ranked. If there are 20 films on the ballot, this means each one would receive 10.5 points.

1. Opfergang (Veit Harlan)
2. Der verzauberte Tag (Peter Pewas)
3. Große Freiheit Nr. 7 (Helmut Käutner)
4. The Way You Wanted Me (Teuvo Tulio)
5. Phantom Lady (Robert Siodmak)
6. At Land (Maya Deren)
7. To Have and Have Not (Howard Hawks)
8. Cobra Woman (Robert Siodmak)
9. The Curse of the Cat People (Gunther von Fritsch/Robert Wise)
10. Laura (Otto Preminger)
11. Murder, My Sweet (Edward Dmytryk)
12. The Woman in the Window (Fritz Lang)
13. Mordets Melodi (Bodil Ipsen)
14. Jammin’ the Blues (Gjon Mili)

Top 3 were all made and banned in Nazi Germany, though Opfergang eventually managed to get a release. Opfergang is kinda like the Nazi The End of Evangelion.

Slightly awkward year for me as most of these films were seen such a long time ago. I think Peasant Symphony (not a musical!) and The Respectable Ladies of Pardubice are the only ones I saw over the last few years:

1. Ivan Groznyy I / Ivan the Terrible part I (1944, Sergei M. Eisenstein)
2. A Canterbury Tale (1944, Michael Powell & Emeric Pressburger)
3. The Chronicle History of King Henry the Fift with His Battell Fought at Agincourt in France (1944, Laurence Olivier)
4. Boerensymfonie / Peasant Symphony (1944, Henri Storck & Maurice Delattre)
5. To Have and Have Not (1944, Howard Hawks)
6. Double Indemnity (1944, Billy Wilder)
7. Arsenic and Old Lace (1944, Frank Capra)
8. I bambini ci guardano / The Children Are Watching Us (1944, Vittorio De Sica)
9. Pocestné paní Pardubické / The Respectable Ladies of Pardubice (1944, Martin Fric)
10. Gaslight (1944, George Cukor)

11. Die Feuerzangenbowle / The Punch Bowl (1944, Helmut Weiss)
12. The Woman in the Window (1944, Fritz Lang)
13. Le ciel est à vous / The Sky Is Yours (1944, Jean Grémillon)
14. The Suspect (1944, Robert Siodmak)
15. Zhila-byla devochka / Once There Was a Girl (1944, Viktor Eysymont)
16. Félicie Nanteuil (1944, Marc Allégret)
17. Lifeboat (1944, Alfred Hitchcock)
18. Hail the Conquering Hero (1944, Preston Sturges)
19. Passage to Marseille (1944, Michael Curtiz)
20. Going My Way (1944, Leo McCarey)

And unlike every previous time I will include the URLs from the beginning, as otherwise I just never find the time:

*Really surprised The Miracle of Morgan's Creek is '43 now ...

**Also, I can't believe I never realized it was this easy before. Just do an advanced search for the year, order by your rating and copy the link. Was everyone doing this?

I don't think you're on Daylight Time anymore ;)

Also, you're giving us (almost) a full four weeks... did you mean for it to be only 3?

Oy vey, of 21 seen this is everything I gave a 7 or up, and no major favorites. I'll be checking back here for recommendations to try to round this up to 10 at least, so thanks in advance all. Links forthcoming!

Edit: well, wasn't quite able to hit 10, so I threw in a high 6 to round it out.

Edit: saw another solid number 7 at the 11th hour, if it's not too late.

It's all quite thin obviously lol, but you've got the love triangle, death is all pervading, scenes of heavenly chorus and transcendence, final scenes at a beach + 'Komm, süsser Tod' would be an apt alternative title for the film and the the song kinda fits it as well, the perfect pick for a fan made Opfergang music video on yt!

But at the bottom, the immanent philosopher sees in the entire universe only the deepest longing for absolute annihilation, and it is as if he clearly hears the call that permeates all spheres of heaven: Redemption! Redemption! Death to our life! and the comforting answer: you will all find annihilation and be redeemed!

Has it been subbed? Wow, if so (and one of the hopeful reasons I nominated it a couple of years ago)! Such an exquisite and beautiful little film, of tenderness, caring and youth finding its way forward in a terrible wartime climate. These two little girls are unforgettably poignant amid this snowscape of oppression.

Yeah, firstly in Spanish, then in English. There is still hope for nonconformist film buffs.

Thanks so much for making me aware of this, Ángel. It's very pleasing to know that an extremely underseen film that I absolutely loved might be available now to a somewhat wider cinephile audience.

I think 80% of movies I've seen from 1944 are noirs.

1. Lifeboat
2. Murder, My Sweet
3. The Woman in the Window
4. Double Indemnity
5. Gaslight
6. The Suspect
7. Laura
8. Arsenic and Old Lace
9. The Lodger
10. The Curse of the Cat People
11. Phantom Lady

Spoiler

Honorable Mention: To Have and Have Not. I really liked this movie when I saw it, but I think that was when I was about 12. And I've adopted a policy of not voting for movies if I haven't seen them in the past twenty years.

This movie was championed here (for DtC) by RogerTheMovieManiac88 putting critics (and official lists) to shame.
Seconded, great find!

Thank you so much to everyone who mentioned The Great Sacrifice and Great Freedom No. 7 (aka Port of Freedom). What masterpieces!

HMs: JANE EYRE; TIMBER QUEEN;GASLIGHT; HAIL THE CONQUERING HERO; STORM OVER LISBON (Republic Studio's version of CASABLANCA);SHE'S A SOLDIER TOO; IT HAPPENED TOMORROW; THE WOMAN IN THE WINDOW; NATIONAL VELVET; CHRISTMAS IN JULY; PHANTOM LADY

Predictions?
I'm guessing DOUBLE INDEMNITY although LAURA, the Hitch, The Hemingway/Bogart/Hawks and the Chandler should do well.

Obscurities?
COBRA WOMAN definitely deserves more love :whistling: (l) :circle:

BLONDE FEVER - not only do we get the debut of Gloria Grahame, as the blonde ensnaring Mary Astor's husband... but Jessica Tandy has a cameo, and Ava Gardner an unbilled bit

FOUR JILLS IN A JEEP was a popular flagwaver based on Carole Landis' account of entertaining the troops

AND THE ANGELS SING - lively musical comedy about sister act quartet involved with unscrupulous manager Fred MacMurray.

THE VERY THOUGHT OF YOU - forgotten flagwaver about army marriage with John Garfield & Eleanor Parker.

CRIME BY NGHT is a road company THIN MAN with Jerome Cowan in one of his rare leads, and Jane Wyman on the cusp of stardom - as our loveable tec couple... young eleanor Parker is mystery woman.

SAILOR'S HOLIDAY is a fun B with our gobs getting a tour of a film studio - young Shelley Winters amog their quarry
