Voting Rules:
- You must watch both films before you vote.
- To vote, post which of the two movies is your favorite. (note: you're ranking the individual films, not the countries)

Voting deadline = Nov 15th
Countdown till deadline

The country that ends at 1st place proceeds to the next round. The ranking of the match will be decided using these rules:
- Movie with most votes wins.
- In case of a tie the match will have a 3 day extension.
- In case there's still a tie then, the next voter decides by sudden death.
Here's a quick summary of how the tournament works
We start with 32 films from 32 countries. Each country has a manager who determines which movie will be watched. In the first round the countries are divided into 8 groups of 4. From each group the countries that end up at #1 and #2 proceed to the next round. In the 2nd round the 16 remaining countries will be divided into 8 matches of 2. The managers pick a new movie. The winner of each match proceeds to the next round. This continues till the final.

1. Unter den Brücken 8/10
2. Kevade 6/10

Kevade has some weird direction choices in certain scenes... not necessarily bad, just weird. The characters and storyline were meh overall. The film isn't very memorable in my opinion.

Unter den Brücken was good overall. I had some issues with the film when I watched it a few months ago...
Spoiler
I wasn't a fan of the dog snatching near the end. Plus, this film's view on women is a little too archaic. She's sad because all the women in the park has somebody but she doesn't have someone. Thus, when two guys compete for her at a period of time in which no other men have showed any romantic interest in her, she must fall in love with one of the two guys. All independent women must get with a man that have shown at least a little interest in them. The film also didn't really give a reason for the two men wanting her except that she's a woman and they haven't found any other woman that worked out long term.

2. Kevade

One of the films of my life. It was the first film I ever translated into Spanish (a great triumph because it was unknown around here). Masterpieces like this should not be allowed in the cup.

Unter den Brücken is a masterpiece. Too strong that Kevade never stands a chance.

2. Unter den Brücken (1946) 6/10

Giving some love to the underdog, both good films but I was more entertained by Kevade.

I really wanted to be the odd one out but...

1. Unter den Brücken 10/10 - sweet and unforgettable movie
2. Kevade 6.5/10 - sweet but forgettable movie

My 13th "ten" in 1,930 checks, and it was a complete surprise, before watching I had read some crappy "analysis" about the film being "apolitical" and so on and boy was it a stupid review a posteriori

PS: Good use of music in both!

1. Unter den Brücken (4.5)
2. Kevade (3.5)

I was mesmerized with the poetic realism and excellent cinematography in Unter den Brücken. The acting and script is also highly engaging in Käutners work. Thus it edges out its competitor and receives my vote.

(The battle between Estonia & Germany sure is very civil here in the World Cup compared to the raucous battles between them in Kevade) :guns:

Two very charming films, I enjoyed them both so thanks to the managers for their picks.

1. Unter den Brücken 7/10
2. Kevade 7/10

I see there are some sequels to Kevade that look intriguing. Has anyone watched these and, if so, are they worth seeking out?

Two votes in a row for Estonia! So here come the votes jvv predicted. I guess these were sent by mail. But I have to be strict. Mailvotes that will arrive after the deadline in the OP won't be counted. :folded:

Obviously votes that appear on November 15th should be disqualified. Since no time was specified in the OP, it should be assumed the deadline was de facto November 14th. Believe me folks, this is what Lumiére intended when he created the constitution. :folded:

Only if you manage to fully click the URL. If you press down the click button, but fail to release it than the instruction about the deadline is a hanging chad. This makes it impossible to decide whether the time instruction was correctly relayed or not. Thus, we must revert back to using November 14th as the deadline.

1. Germany - 7.8
2. Estonia - 6-7ish

I saw Under the Bridges earlier this year, and I quite liked it. Spring, however, failed to hold my interest. The books might be interesting though, and I'm somewhat curious about the sequels. Estonia is still a country I'm continuing to explore cinema-wise, so thanks for helping that along jvv. :)
