59 is a good number of participants for this kind of poll. The two big annual polls, <400 and 1001 Favs, always attract more participants than all other polls. To compare the last 40s and 50s edition had 61 an 53 participants.Torgo wrote: ↑November 2nd, 2020, 2:42 pmOf course they're not so much comparablejoachimt wrote: ↑November 2nd, 2020, 2:29 pm Re: Torgo.
You can't easily compare iCM's Most Favorited with this, because the way it's compiled is completely different. In Most Favorited the position is a formula, which depends on checkcount. A movie with 100 favs on 200 checks will be higher than a movie with 200 favs on 20000 checks. However, this poll doesn't take checkcount into account, so a movie with thousands of checks (most in the top 100 here) have a lot more chance of getting votes, because more people from the participants have seen them. This is exactly what makes Most Favorited interesting: lessen known films get a chance to get into it, as long as people love it.But thanks for pointing that out.
Usually, popular titles from there will also have a very good standing in the forum, as shows. I'm just excited to see how it's all turning out, how the titans of every canon like 2001 & Psycho will do against ICM favorites like Seppuku & Human Condition III (and the arthouse titans in between, Bresson and the like).
But it's not the most active of polls in this edition, methinks. Others had more participants.

Thanks for clearing that up, Wolf!

Oh, I'm positive we will have plenty room for weird experimental underground arthouse pinku schlock in our Top 20!

I've seen 33 now. It's a mixed bag alright, but if you have room for Jungle Book and Breakfast at Tiffany's, you should also be able to squeeze in Go, Go Second Time Virgin or Ecstasy of the Angels. He's one of the crucial figures in Japanese cinema of the 60s. In that sense, a cameo for Teruo Ishii would've been fair too.

Ecstasy of the Angels is from the 70s... Violent Virgin and Running in Madness, Dying in Love would have been my Wakamatsu-picks, but I did not submit a list this time.Onderhond wrote: ↑November 2nd, 2020, 3:31 pmI've seen 33 now. Personal Japanese favourites from the 60s that most likely did not make the cut: one or two episodes from the Zatōichi-series, like Zatōichi's Cane Sword or Zatōichi and the Chest of Gold.

It really is an epic film. I caught it in a screening last year with all four parts shown, and I had to give it up for the sheer scope of the project. Glad to put it on my listpsychotronicbeatnik wrote: ↑November 1st, 2020, 10:56 pmI should have placed just one vote for this as a single film instead of the four individual ones which i ranked #1-4 on my list. A low finish for this epic of epics but at least it is here.Lonewolf2003 wrote: ↑November 1st, 2020, 5:32 am

Ah yes, missed that it was early 70s. With you on Running in Madness, Dying in Love and Violent Virgin tough, also both 3.5* from me. Would've made fine entries.
Wakamatsu should be more famous by now. He even died and everything, but that didn't seem to help either. And they even made a film about him (and his studio) not too long ago. Maybe someone should email Criterion.

I just watched Winter Light and Through a Glass Darkly last month specifically for this poll. Both were good, but not great, imo. I've now seen 7 Bergmans, and The Seventh Seal is still my favourite, followed probably by The Virgin Spring.
