I could expand that quite a lot (I left of movies with fewer than 16 checks because they would have very little chance of making the <400 list), and in the meanwhile new stuff will have been seen that fits. I hope it's going to be as good as <400 but more shaken up, more surprising, maybe leaning a bit more towards genre and towards regions that are under-represented, even on <400... but I agree the pool of participants might get smaller, while it would actually need to get bigger to get a solid list out of the poll...

Woah, 1826 at 50 checks or less.

(588 at 10 or less)

Do I win something?

There are some utterly ridiculous inclusions here though.

Hell, on the first page of 11 checks I have both a Renoir and a Duras.

How does La maison du mystère have just 9 checks for instance? I realize it is 382 minutes long, but I thought this was quite a well regarded film.

Or from popular culture, The Fast Show film Bill & Ted only has 9 checks too? Where are the Brits?

How are so many Imai films here?

How is Guitry's I Did it Three Times or Kachyna's Hanele (1999) there...

Going back to 3 checks or less I see a great Epstein feature, and I am somehow the only check for a (granted, just ok) Farocki film.

Jumping back to 11 check films I see Godard, more Duras. At 12 checks I find Lev Kuleshov's The Death Ray. Action, sci-fi from Kuleshov only turned 12 heads? No, it is not a great film, but what?!

Oh, and I haven't even mentioned the amount of Carne` and Germi films I have caught so far...

This is really confusing.

Just to clarify, that's 362 films marked as favorite.
My total of <50 films is 2800.
For 135 films, I'm the only check.

I have 3218 checks <50

there is a Southeast Asia challenge going on and I am still the only check for Jaka Sembung & Bergola Ijo, Neraka perut bumi, Lebak membara, 5 cewek jagoan and Petualangan cinta nyi blorong??

I was going to watch this a few months ago on Mubi, but they don't have subtitles for the first film (Nyi Blorong), so I didn't want to watch the second one yet (though strangely they have subtitles for it).

And Onderhond, that one's an 80s horror if you want. :D

125 titles here (below 50). Everything is rated 8/10 or higher. 75% of them is probably norwegian. Which is why people haven't seen them.

That why I didn't vote for the nordic poll. People in this forum never expand their interest beyond Bergman and Kaurismäki, so I find the result rather pointless.

I have a grand total of 79 eligible films with <50 checks. About 2/3rds of those are Documentary Now! episodes and entries from a web series I enjoy. At least I could contribute a list that includes some Oscar-nominated shorts from the last few years :D

:folded: That's unfair to the countless people here who explore beyond the canon and try to raise more awareness for non-English cinema of the world's many countries.
Your votes and deeper insight would actually improve further nordic polls. I'm sure the forum would appreciate it! (Just don't be too sad if the usual suspects win :) )

I'm hosting the nordic challenge every time. You can't say I haven't tried to get people to expand. But people only focus on those two diectors in that challenge as well.

"didn't vote for the nordic poll" (in this poll) isn't the same as won't submit a list in the poll if it's run.

I'm not sure what Lonewolf is going to do, but my suggestion would be to give two slots to the two clear winners and then a new poll for the 10 options between 16 and 20.

PeacefulAnarchy wrote: November 9th, 2020, 3:50 am I'm not sure what Lonewolf is going to do, but my suggestion would be to give two slots to the two clear winners and then a new poll for the 10 options between 16 and 20.
The new poll will consist of the top 17 (13 votes and higher, so Sci-fi and above). Cause I think 12 options to decide 8 slots is too limited and with 64 options total 17 going through is a fair amount in my view. Plus it's more in line with the OP.

I won't give the two winners two slots already, cause I want to be sure all options are voted for full heartedly. That people voted for the options they really want and not maybe tactical. or only partial interest. Especially with <50 checks people might revise their vote after the discussion here about that option.

I would like to hear other user's opinions. If more people support PA's suggestion I'm totally open for going with that, it's a good interesting suggestion.

Should I give everyone just 8 votes or less (4, 6?) in the next poll? So people only vote for the few they really want and limit tactical voting with their surplus votes or do less votes actually make for more tactical voting?

Number of votes should be at maximum what we are going to pick

I never use all mine, even with 8, I just vote for what I want, so I hope everyone else does too.

By the way, if everyone used 16 votes, that means that 24/41 voted for the vinner. That is the popular vote winner regardless. Anything over 50 percent should go on, I'd say

We have six categories with more than 17 votes.. So why not let just the handfull with 17 votes "fight" to the last two slots?

Cause I want to be sure, like I said, that everyone who voted for the top option complelty support them and didn't vote for them, cause they thought: "might be interesting but I'm not sure I will vote for it in the final poll"

And people can change their mind. Frankly I didn't know there would be a 'Silent' poll in November, the "pre-1920s" poll sound less interesting now

I'm on board with your suggestion Lonewolf: Let's vote on the Top 17 polls, and everyone gets 8 votes since there are 8 slots to fill.

I don't mind either way. I feel like the top 2 are clearly ahead in a way that makes including them redundant, and a smaller poll with more restricted options makes it easier to choose, but there are a couple of options in the 13-15 votes I'd vote for so I'm not going to complain.

Thanks. Unless I hear other opinions I will set up the new poll tomorrow.

Everything said before sounds pretty reasonable to me :turned:

I agree with this entirely.

There's a very clear vote gap between second and third place, so cement the first two options in and get us to vote on the rest.

24 and 23 is not a huge vote gap compared to 20, the third place from the first poll. It hurts nobody to have a revote on Under 50 checks and Japan on the next poll with all the other options that received at least 13 votes. If they're popular then they'll still win the next poll.

How about a poll to see if we should include the top two or not? :D

Yeah, we really should first discuss if we set up a poll to decide on the referendum over the polls.
