We have 41 returning voters (68%), so there should be a fair amount of stability in the results, but there are definitely a lot of changes, primarily to old favourites becoming official and new favourites becoming unofficial. Overall there are only 3 fewer participants than last time, while the lists seem to be longer and more robust.

All right. Starting things off with some runners up. I've changed the formatting a little from the last edition, so let me know if it works for you or not. It took me some time to figure out the little changes, especially the colour coding for the ranking changes in the Poll History (a new section since last time there was only 1 previous edition), but I think I've got it to work properly now.

The most-voted film in the Top 1000 that didn't make the Top 250 - everyone likes it, but nobody loves it (it also finished #1000 in our recent 2010s decade poll)

The Illusionist had the misfortune of coming out at almost the exact same time as the somewhat similar The Prestige. Curiously they both made about the same amount of money (according to Wiki), and given that The Illusionist was significantly lower-budgeted it was more profitable. They have almost the exact same RT score - 74 vs 76%. Each got an Oscar nom for Cinematography - the Nolan film was also nominated for Art Direction. I remember liking both about the same - why has one of them retained so much more of the cinephile's consciousness? Just the director? Curious.

And I've meant to watch Angels in America forever. But, y'know, TV miniseries, long, all that. Thanks for pushing it though, I really should make it a higher priority.

Well, I managed to fix half of the issue, but can't figure out the formula for the rest. So films that weren't in the 2018 list will display as "new" as their rank instead of "--", in red if they were in the 2015 list and in green if they are showing up for the first time in the 2020 list.

Re: The Illusionist, I only saw this once but it was definitely affected by my viewing of The Prestige. I expected The Illusionist to be another twist-filled mystery, but if I recall I think it was a lot more of a character study which threw me off. Probably deserves a second watch at some point.

Re: Angels in America, I watched the first episode of this a couple years ago, and found it very soap opera-y. I probably should have stuck with it through a couple more to give it more of a chance, but I just wasn't motivated to keep watching after that first episode.

Personally I preferred The Illusionist by a big margin, but need to watch it again because I've only seen it once and don't remember too much of it.

I have a bit of a soft spot for the 1981 version of Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, but it's been a long time since I saw it. The 2005-something film got the robot all wrong!

Honestly it never occurred to me to include The Visitor as a so-bad-its-good pick, but maybe I should have. I had the good fortune to see the Alamo Drafthouse restored print in theaters. I wrote this review back then in 2013, and it's still one of my most upvoted reviews on IMDb:

This oddball midnight movie is getting a re-release and eventual DVD courtesy of the Alamo Drafthouse.

It's about an evil little girl, who is so evil that John Huston and his pacifist army of intergalactic bald yoga practitioners arrive from space to stop her. Meanwhile Lance Henriksen is the evil boyfriend of her clueless, innocent mother, who sold his soul to the satanic forces nurturing her in a Faustian bargain for...a basketball coach position.

Which leads to the early and highly memorable slo-mo basketball set-piece, easily one of the most unique choices of setting for a horror film sequence I've ever seen!

The atmosphere of this weird, weird film alternates between genuinely and oddly poetic (mostly thanks to the music), pure B-movie cheese, and unintentional hilarity. It's one of the strangest films I've ever seen, but that's not a bad thing in this case. If you give yourself over to its strange charms, this is some kind of consciousness-expanding experience.

Will you like it? There are folks who seek out these sorts of bizarre, unique B-movies. You know who you are. At the very least, you should [find] this film an object of curiosity.

Somehow, and for some reason, John Huston, Glenn Ford, Franco Nero (as Jesus Christ), Shelley Winters, Lance Henriksen, Sam Peckinpah, Mel Ferrer and Kareem Abdul-Jabbar are all in this movie.

Blue Ruin is a good example as it did quite well in the first poll (granted, with a slightly different userbase and halflife). I haven't seen it yet, but did anyone forget to vote for it because they thought it was still official?

I like both of these and agree that even though they're both about magicians, they're very different films. If pressed, I think I marginally the Prestige, which tends to be unfairly forgotten in discussions of Nolan's films, although I think it's at least among his best.

Ferg - can you please change the forum archive image for Angela? That screenshot does not nearly capture the mood or atmosphere of the film. It is a borderline horror film about a young girl who sees demons. I'm kind of not surprised that everybody is like "Traverse and Sol must be mad; that film looks so dull" with a screenshot like that always following the film around on here.

My summary of the film for this year's 1000<400 Challenge
Elements of horror, mystery and fantasy come together in this story of a precocious preteen girl who believes that devil is responsible for her mother's mental illness. She also perceives various people as good or bad angles, has visions of the Devil incarnate and becomes obsessed with bizarre sins cleansing rituals. This is a bit of a folie à deux tale too as we also see some of her sister's visions. Stacks up well to second viewing. Great ending.

From the unofficial lists it is on at the moment only "The top 100 Most Violent Movies Ever Made by Tim Wambolt" seems to have a shot, but i don't see that being adopted anytime soon. 366, 500<400, tszdt and maybe doubling could be places for it...

I would lOvE to get a cyberpunk list official btw, but most of them will be lists trying to bring an all-inclusive overview instead of a top list, maybe the amount of standout pieces in this subgenre is still too small...

I actually fear the total amount of films is too small, unless you stretch the definition so much that it starts to lose its meaning.
As for that Top 100 Most Violent (that lists 148 entries) ... don't see that happening either

I see that it was on the 366 candidate list though, shame it didn't make it, it definitely deserves its place on there (over some lesser entries).

I have no opinion one way or the other

As far as I'm aware, there is no "forum image database", just a list of image urls that some people keep in spreadsheets for others to use in polls. In the nominations thread I proposed having a central gathering place to make it easier to keep things updated and share information on how to run polls, so we'll see if that idea gets taken up.

This is usually the go-to image for the film (not on ICM specifically, but in general)
