1 and 3 are some of Miyazaki's weaker films, but alas.
I'm glad we made it 250 titles instead of 150, those bottom 100 were clearly the most interesting part of the list. Also fun to see that without the iron grip of established canon guiding people these result lists are way more interesting. I don't feel this is a list of a very animation-loving community, but it's varied and broad enough to make it worthwhile.

Thanks for this, J! My #1 favorite didn't even make the long list, but my fault.
I think I counted 75/250 or 30% that were neither US nor Japan. Not too shabby.
Seen ca 175 of top 250. Highest unseen: Perfect blue (#10).
Could we get a list of shorts at some point?

Could we get a list of shorts at some point?

Just order the list by runtime and look for the cut-off point?

Edit: Everything from Skazka skazok (76 entries below 30 minutes) could be considered "shorts" I guess.
My Top 675 (2021 Edition) on: Onderhond | ICM | Letterboxd
Thanks for the tip about Skazka skazok.

But than the ranking is messed up. I can post a toplist of shorts only and one of features only (using 45 min as cutoff).

So many of mine are in the blues list
I guess many here don't consider non-camera animation to be animated films.

I totally forgot about non-camera animation, otherwise some of Brakhage's films would be on my list too.
If I had to pick one from my blues that more people need to see it would be this onejoachimt wrote: ↑July 29th, 2019, 4:57 pm #517 (#new) Tales from the Far Side (1994, Marv Newland) 60.71 points, 37 checks, 0 official lists, (IMDb)1 voters

The top 250 contains 82 shorts and 168 features.
All votes list contains 1351 shorts and 633 features (and 41 with unknown runtime).
Any interest for a top 250 animated shorts as iCM list?
Or a top 250 animated features?

that would be lovely.
As for the blues:
Apathy, I definitely would have voted for Vynalez zkazy.
Zama, I'm glad Bozzetto was represented anyhow. West & soda is fun sendup of Leone, tho the subs on my copy are pretty peculiar. My #1 would have been another Bozzetto.
Coryn, "Willy the operatic whale" was originally part -- the best IMO --- of a Disney omnibus feature called Make mine music, which of course I saw in the theater back then. So it wouldn't have occurred to me to think of it as a standalone short.

Thanks J, especially for the extra stats along the way.
I thought this would be fun - The Battle of the Major Animation Studios (which, would you believe, have released exactly the same number of films)

Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind was released before Studio Ghibli was founded
It's a Topcraft movie (of course, they went bankrupt and was eventually bought out to become Ghibli)

"Though it was made before Studio Ghibli was founded, it is often considered a Ghibli work, and was released as part of the Studio Ghibli Collection DVD and Blu-ray range."
Good enough for me.

From the Blues list:
- Umfeld (way too modern) and Kizumonogatari (too anime) I wouldn't necessarily recommend on this forum.
- Godkiller might find an audience here. A bit too cyberpunk/industrial would be my guess, but the unique/static animation should appeal to some.
- Blame: surprised I was the only one. Available on Netflix, superb budget animation based on one of the most cyberpunk things ever.
- Big Fish & Begonia should definitely find an audience here, considering how well Ghibli performs. It's Chinese though, so it might be another 20 years before the rest of the world catches on.
@Teproc: Mirai no Mirai is definitely getting my support next time around

Heh, forgot the most interesting entries. Seeing how people love animated shorts here + the presence of plenty of anime, I would've assumed anthologies like Genius Party (Beyond) and Short Peace would find a lot more support. Some of the best and brightest talents with a good dose of experimentation and full creative freedom ... If you like things like Memories or The Animatrix, these films are a must watch.
Edit: oh, and since I watched The Adventures of Prince Achmed this morning, people interesting in more shadow puppet animation should definitely check out Michel Ocelot's Princes et Princesses.

I was surprised to be the only one voting for it, since Hosoda is not exactly under-the-radar, but it's a bit too recent probably (though it has more than 400 checks already).
Big Fish & Begonia sure sounds promising, I'll have to check that out at some point.
Yeah, each year I draw up a Top 500 around Christmas and use that list to filter my nomination lists. That means I'm max 1 year behind. It's definitely a film that will pick up a following though, it's the kind of film very few people dislike.
My Top 675 (2021 Edition) on: Onderhond | ICM | Letterboxd
Being going through some of the unseen shorts today, it mostly felt like an academic chore though. Lots of shorts that have historic significance, but have lost a lot of their appeal since their initial release.
Inspirace was a welcome exception, but apparently that one isn't an official check. The only real worthwhile discovery was the work of David O'Reilly. A true modern voice who is able to capture something about our current world few directors have managed. Mostly because O'Reilly himself is quite young still and hasn't lost touch yet with the younger generations.

Damn, don't know how I managed to do that. Sorry for the error; I was too rushed this time to triple-check everything.joachimt wrote: ↑July 27th, 2019, 5:29 pm Fergy, I just found out you voted for The Incredibles, not the movie, but the video game. I removed it from the results. I'm not recalculating the results with your vote for the movie (assuming that's what you wanted to do).
I also removed six titles from the results that are not on iCM, all votes by PdA of course. They are blocking me from creating an iCM list of the full results.
But yeah, I meant to vote for the movie. The search results that come up with the list helper are sometimes headscratching. I still don't fully understand why video games are even on imdb... but that's a discussion for another thread.
Are you using titles or urls with the list helper? If you use urls it can't put the wrong title on your list.Fergenaprido wrote: ↑July 31st, 2019, 3:06 pmDamn, don't know how I managed to do that. For shorts I use ttids, but for features I usually use titles since it's a faster process (though prone to error). I should probably just invest the time to use ttids for all titles.joachimt wrote: ↑July 31st, 2019, 3:20 pmAre you using titles or urls with the list helper? I start every poll from an export of my IMDb-ratings, so the ttids are already there. I always create the list in Excel and then I just paste the ttids into list helper. Safest way.Fergenaprido wrote: ↑July 31st, 2019, 7:33 pmFor shorts I use ttids, but for features I usually use titles since it's a faster process (though prone to error).
