Only if he expands it to a Top 50

I don't think I've ever heard of A Guy Named Joe.
Spielberg remade that film himself, as Always (1989). Seen both original and remake once each, think I was fairly ambivalent about both but don't remember either anymore really. So two films on his list that he remade himself, and a lot of others that are fairly direct influences on him. Rather surprised that he doesn't have Pinocchio which I would argue has more influence on his filmography - including overt references in several of his films - than anything else.Fergenaprido wrote: ↑April 8th, 2021, 6:43 pmOnly if he expands it to a Top 50

right, the new War of the Worlds was his. but not an adaptation of the movie tho, while Always is probably based on the film more than the source story

Yeah I couldn't comment as to that - I mean, I could go look it up on Wiki and follow some links and come up with a detailed answer as to why one film may be more "re-adaptation" and the other more "remake", but that's way too much work

I don't think Spielberg improved on Haskin's War of the Worlds at all, in fact in most regards I like it less, but what's really disappointing about all the adaptations that I know is that none of them even attempts to get at what the book is really about, which is colonialism. I guess allegory provokes allergy, at least when it comes to mainstream sci-fi adaptations.

Perhaps, but I would argue that the original radio broadcast is more famous than the book, and I imagine that film-wise the directors/creators are trying to capture that sensationalism that occurred when people thought there was a real invasion, as opposed to the more nuanced meanings in the text.OldAle1 wrote: ↑April 8th, 2021, 8:29 pmYeah I couldn't comment as to that - I mean, I could go look it up on Wiki and follow some links and come up with a detailed answer as to why one film may be more "re-adaptation" and the other more "remake", but that's way too much work![]()

Also, didn't know about Always either, though I'm sure I was peripherally aware of it since it is Spielberg. That Top 20 list does feel more like a list of influences than a list of favourites, but who am I to critique Spielberg's choices? He likes what he likes. I'm sure my Top 20 looks just as bland and uninspired to many as his does.

It's an okay list for me - the writer's got a clear preference in the type of films he likes (even including some "co-productions" that I wouldn't personally consider Canadian), and the only outliers appear to be a few lesser known French films (which makes sense if he's from/based in Montréal) and a few underseen queer films. Still, it's always nice to add another Canuck list to my collection. I've got more unseen on this list (27) than the official TIFF one (13), despite this one having 54 films fewer.
I hope you don't mind that I keep adding lists that you post to icm. If you want to add them yourself, just let me know and I can remove them.

Well, no one else dood it. So I dood it. The monthly updates may be more of a pain than I imagine, but I've committed myself. If anything needs to be tweaked, let me know. Some fiddling with the ICM database was required in assembling the list -- 15 or so films weren't imported from IMDb yet, and a solid number of included films needed an ICM update due to either missing directors, missing runtimes, missing AKAs or AKAs that didn't match IMDb.
Hopefully, some of those missing films (all shorts, I think?) will get added to IMDb in the future. So many of them look mediocre and skippable that I'm not frantic to do the labor myself.
At this point, I've seen 622 films from the first half and 623 from the second. Consistent! And when I decided to start a second list after the first 1,200 items, I had no idea that the split would turn out almost dead even.
