Highest Favorite % and Fav/Dis list

#1

Post by Coryn »

Following a discussion on our knockout round competition, a request by beasterne and an analysis I made in 2019 on how it was notable how evenly liked recent movies are on less top lists than older movies (not the reason for making this current list) I made this list where I simply exported @tim2460 his official lists and added a Fav% (Favs/Checks) and Fav/Dis column. Please take all of this with a big grain of salt as there is no science involved so it is a really basic way of finding some fun results.

It's a way to see what movies on ICM are the ones we could call 'Love it or hate it movies' and the ones we could call 'generally liked'

A list of 16321 movies is the result (total amount of movies on at least 1 official list)
After filtering out movies with 99 checks or less as to not get movies with 4 checks and 3 favorites in my results I still have a nice list of 11610 movies left to work with.

Some cool findings here (sorry for my presentation skills, I am a noob when it comes to tables and such):
Highest Fav%
1. Doro no kawa (1981) 24,5%
2. Happy End (1967) 24,4%

As to not get a full list of movies with 100 checks 0 favorites and 2 dislikes I gave every movie a favorite so a movie with 1 favorite and 34 dislikes wouldn't lose to the afore mentioned one.

Generally liked movies are movies with a relatively low Fav% and a high Fav/Dis
Because there is no mathematical way of doing this I simply grouped both the Fav% and Fav/Dis columns, gave them points from 11610 Pts to 0 and then calculated the difference between their Fav% and Fav/Dis total.

You ask and I shall provide.
I don't think there are a lot more interesting lists than this one, and definitely no weirder ones.

I made a similar list, but using a different formula (last updated in Feb 2020).

My formula is: ((favorites*dislikes)/(favorites+dislikes))^1.25 / (checks+50)

It's similar to the harmonic mean formula, but it gives a bonus to films that are more well-known.

This is awesome! Thank you for the research and the results.

A couple of comments/questions/thoughts:
- What does "HM" stand for? I can see it's more widely seen movies, but I can't figure out the abbreviation.
- So many 500<400 films showing up on the love it or hate it list. It makes sense given the way the list is constructed--but it's one of the reasons why I don't find that a compelling list to work on. Why spend time watching movies when I have a higher than average likelihood of hating them?
- Highest favs to dislikes is an interesting list--lots of documentaries it looks like. I'd like to see a top 250 on that one, pretty please Coryn?
- It would be a lot more work, but I would also be very interested in folding in non-official films to this list if possible (especially for love it or hate it, highest fav/dislikes, and generally liked). What a great way to find previously overlooked gems.
- Generally liked looks to be mostly animated shorts/movies, which makes sense. Still interesting to see the results to back it up.
- I made the Love it or Hate it list on ICM: https://www.icheckmovies.com/lists/hate ... beasterne/. Any list with The Room at #3 is going to be at least somewhat interesting.

It usually means "honourable mention", and I think it does here too.

HM = Honorable mentions

It really depends in my opinion. Love it or Hate it have a higher possibility to enter your personal top 100 list for example while high Fav/Dis are safe picks when you want to make sure you will have a good time watching a movie (for example with friends or your significant other).

I'll make a top 250 of Fav/Dis with >1000 checks soon.

I'm not sure how to get a list of all movies on icm in a list, I took mine from Tim's database with official movies. If it's obtainable I can make a list.

Thanks for making the list, do you have an easy way to import an IMDB list to ICM or did you manually add them ?

IF you can tell me how to import this to an icm list I can make it on there as well, or if you'd rather do it yourself you're also welcome to do it.
I saved Latin, what did you ever do ?

It’s pretty easy to do: export your IMDb list to Excel, copy all of the IMDb urls, create the new list on icm, and paste the IMDb urls into the “add movies by IMDb url tab. Took me about 2 minutes to add your last list so it’s pretty easy :)

I don't see that option when making a list or is it only possible in the beta version ?

I don't use the beta version (I don't think). The step by step is:

1) Click "add a list"
2) Give the list a name, set it to Public for Visibility if you want others to be able to see it, click "Add"
3) This takes you to the Edit movies of top list screen. Click on the tab in the middle of the screen that says "By IMDb movie URLs".
4) Copy and paste the list of IMDB urls into the text box on that page, and click "save."
5) All of the movies will be added to your list!
