Best Music Videos
So today I learned that IMDB has music videos on it to rate. Now I want a list on iCM of the "best music videos". First I ahve to find a good list. Be great to have the "500 Greatest Music Videos of All-Time" and make it an unofficial list.
So, anyone have a good list?
1) Most watched on youtube -- https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_m ... ube_videos
2) Billboard -- http://www.billboard.com/articles/list/ ... ll-results
3) NME -- http://www.nme.com/list/100-greatest-music-videos-1097 <---------- MY CHOICE
4) Rolling Stone -- http://www.rollingstone.com/music/pictu ... e-20110420
5) Complex -- http://www.complex.com/style/2014/02/th ... rnia-gurls
6) E! -- http://entertainment.time.com/2011/07/2 ... ic-videos/
7) Grammy for best video -- http://www.imdb.com/list/ls069911626
So what are your thoughts? Is this a list you'd be interested in? Anyone want to compile a list of best music videos?

I think a good list of music videos it's something worth to discuss. Some of them are very cinematic and works of art. There are at least, or that I know of, 3 official checks: "Fight for your Right", "Thriller" and "Video Killed The Radio Star".
At the moment i can think of these good music videos (regardless of taste):
"Around the World" by Daft Punk - Directed by Michel Gondry
" Otherside" by Red Hot Chilli Peppers - It has a very german expressionism period to it.
"Star Guitar" by Chemical Brothers
"Love On The Run" by Chicane - It's a really cool shortfilm
"Take On Me" - A-Ha - Animation vs Live Action
and of course:
Greatest Music Video Ever

Well done.
Anyway, I recommend looking at this SotD thread, where some users posted their favourite music videos. Other music videos have been discussed in other SotDs, which can be found through the index.

IMDb may allow music videos, but it is woefully incomplete as a music video database. Any of those lists will probably require you to add more than half the entries to IMDb. I think having those lists on ICM would be interesting, though, so if you're willing to do the work I think it'd be great, might even be willing to help you add some next week.blueboybob on Jun 26 2017, 03:21:52 PM wrote:So today I learned that IMDB has music videos on it to rate. What do you mean with this? Do you suggest to create a combined list like TSPDT and call it TSMVDT? Or do you just want those lists you mentioned on iCM?blueboybob on Jun 26 2017, 03:21:52 PM wrote:So what are your thoughts? Is this a list you'd be interested in? I'm all for having those lists you linked to on iCM. Would be a great addition.

I was thinking more one of those lists (for now). Maybe one day a "TSMVDT" type list, but we would need a lot more lists.joachimt on Jun 26 2017, 11:41:02 PM wrote:What do you mean with this? I just added over 1000 music videos (https://www.icheckmovies.com/movies/unc ... =dateadded) to iCM. Anyone want to make a list? I think we should add 2 (maybe 3) for now
NME -- http://www.nme.com/list/100-greatest-music-videos-1097
YouTube -- https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_m ... ube_videos (obviously only the music videos)
Grammy for Music Video -- http://www.imdb.com/list/ls069911626
If you come across something not on IMDB, post it here and we can team up on that.

I'm a big fan of Michel Gondry's music videos. They include some of the most visually inventive MVs ever made.
Great thread! Too bad I'm at work right now, otherwise I would put more time in it. But for now, just a few favourites.
I like this kind of neo-silent video:
Nice, somewhat arthousy storytelling:
I was impressed when I first saw Bitter Sweet Symphony. I didn't know it was an homage to this:
And it may be a bit too mainstream (storytelling-wise, I mean), but this was one of the first music videos that really impressed me:
And sexist or not, I think all Aerosmith videos deserve a special mention because of the eye-candy.
Maybe I'll post a few more later.
I like this kind of neo-silent video:
Get Well Soon - If This Hat Is Missing (I Have Gone Hunting)
Doves - Kingdom of Rust
Massive Attack - Unfinished Sympathy
Guns n' Roses - November Rain

Maybe I'll post a few more later.

Let's say I see why objectively you might have a good case calling these videos sexist, but I still enjoy them as a slightly guilty pleasure.

How about a list of "Most all-time YouTube views"?

That's probably one worth adopting. People may like it or hate it, but pitchfork is fairly influential.GruesomeTwosome on Jul 5 2017, 11:07:41 PM wrote:Pitchfork's 100 Awesome Music Videos: http://pitchfork.com/features/lists-and ... os/?page=1

If a music video list is adopted it would only be one, and I think it'd be preferably one based on the visual artistry not necessarily the underlying music. The description of the pitchfork list makes me unsure if its criteria are really appropriate for a list on a movie site.
What's the "Director's Label Series?"simply, dozens of clips that, for various reasons (because they're so good, because they're so bad, because they feature the Jacksons imagining themselves as gigantic golden gods sprinkling gold dust on humanity), we enjoy watching and hope you'll enjoy as well.
When selecting the following vids we decided to chuck anything from the Director's Label Series-- virtually everything on those collections would be obvious candidates for a list like this-- and stick to clips roughly from the MTV era. Crucially, they also all had to be on YouTube-- we prefer giving you the chance to see a clip to simply talking about one.

Basically, DVD releases of the videographies of some specific music video directors (such as Spike Jonze, Michel Gondry, Jonathan Glazer and some others as you'll see in the link).

Must be I was the one whose check-whoring you noticed. Well couple of months ago I saw that all the Jon Lajoie videos are on IMDb, so it was logically that all 'normal' music videos should be there as well. It appears that they just started to add them, because not even all Michael Jackson videos are up.
I watched most of music videos before internet era because there wasn't anything smarter to do in the lazy afternoons. Of all foreign channels, we only catched Eurosport which, for some reason, begun to limit its programming to only 2hrs a day, and for the rest of the time, there was Viva Channel where I found out all about quality pop music. I guess that was the reason for having affection for 80s music (aside punk/alternative which I discovered later through high-school days).
I remember it was Men without Hats who made the biggest impression on me, not much because of their music itself; it was such a creative move to make a medieval-town settings for their biggest hit, pied piper, midgets and stuff, you know.
Oh yeah and I loved when waitress was stabbed in the back in Trio's Da Da Da. That was cool, too.

Also I remember how unusual was to me seeing Jimmy Sommerville drooling over a man at the swimming pool. Being a kid you imagine gays as moustached perverts in leather attire all over their bare, hairy breasts, and then you see a completely casual dude in check shirt who's not even horny, just romantically infatuated with another dude.
Back then I wasn't 100% sure of WHAT species Boy George was, which kinda terrified me.
And I felt sorry for Skee Lo for being so short. Nobody wanted to pick him for their team.

Also dont think I listen to Madonna or Ricky Martin. Its just a completist thing and not to miss what everybody listen to. But I wouldnt hide that I love stuff like Nena - Nur geträumt. There is a right energy in synthpop just like in any alternative movements.

Chris Cunningham is one of the absolute masters (yet he's strangely absent from most lists), Warp (label) had some cool stuff too. And there's Pleix, a French collective that made videos that float between short and music video.

aaaaah, that. Not 100% but I think this is an artifact. The rip seems to be from VHS, and that part is prob from some porn that got there on accident (not part of the music video).Armoreska on Jul 18 2017, 04:26:11 AM wrote:there's a woman wearing latex @ 3:40mathiasa on Jul 18 2017, 04:22:34 AM wrote:@gershwin: body paint?
